CLUB NEWS

Our first virtual Annual General Meeting (e-AGM) 2020 was successfully held

on Monday, July 27.

A total of 601 principal members had registered as compared to the average

participation of 250 every year. Notwithstanding the new electronic platform,

this was a record number of ‘turnout’ in the Club’s AGM history. More about

the e-AGM can be found on pages six and seven.

Besides the routine AGM agenda items, the President and the Management

Committee addressed members’ concerns with the following key messages.

1. Keppel Club will continue beyond 2021 to preserve our

heritage and tradition.

a. Golfing opportunities in Singapore and overseas will

continue to be explored.

b. Recreational facilities will be available through

collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic Graduates’ Guild

(SPGG). Refer to pages four and five for more information.

2. Appeal for land lease extension has been made and awaiting reply from the government.

3. Reserves are being drawn down for monthly operating expenses to about $20 million by the end of 2021.

4. The legal suit concerning the fraud case was closed on June 30, 2020. A report will be provided to

members in August.

President Lai assured members that if the need does arise, the Club can organize smaller online meetings after the AGM

to discuss the issues of concern.

CLUB NEWS

On Jul 1, Keppel Club signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Singapore Polytechnic Graduates’ Guild (SPGG) to work towards an upgrading project that will potentially enhance the social club facilities for our members.

The signing ceremony by Keppel Club President Lai Mun Onn and SPGG President Jimmy Lim was witnessed by 12 representatives from both clubs. In spite of the various safe measurements in place, the dinner at Peony Jade was as warm and cordial as the last signing ceremony two years ago. Keppel Club’s formal relationship with SPGG began when we signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Aug 2, 2018. Collaboration with SPGG has offered mutual benefits for both

President Lai Mun Onn (left) and SPGG President Jimmy Lim in a fist bump gesture after signing the LOI.

clubs especially for Keppel bowlers who continued with the sport after the closure of our bowling alley on Sept 1, 2018. SPGG’s 10-lane bowling alley has become the home for our bowling fraternity who were actively taking part in the Wednesday League and Trios League organised by SPGG. The 40th

Annual Bowling Championship 2019 was also held at SPGG in November last year. In the President’s Updates onJul 7, members were informed of the latest collaboration as a step to take the Club beyond 2021. Exciting plans are being developed and more information will be made available in due course.

About SPGG

The idea of a guild for graduates of Singapore

Polytechnic (SP) was first mooted in 1961, but it was

not until then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's opening

address to SP students at the Prince Edward Campus

did the idea gain traction. Mr Lee Kuan Yew asked the

now-famous question: "Why don't you have a guild

for graduates?"

Ten years later, the Singapore Polytechnic

Graduates' Guild (SPGG) was set up in 1971 as

the Guild for SP graduates but has since evolved to

welcome graduates from other tertiary institutions as

well as corporations.

SPGG counts numerous successful

entrepreneurs among its members and offers

tremendous networking and guidance opportunities

for budding young talents.

Its well-equipped clubhouse offers a relaxed and

friendly environment for business leaders, industry

experts and young graduates alike to meet. SPGG

members can enjoy its luxurious facilities, such as its

seminar rooms, conference rooms and board rooms

for meetings, and its study room for quieter moments.

It also hosts numerous recreational events and

impressive club facilities such as a 10-lane bowling

alley should members wish to unwind.

CLUB NEWS

The Club’s first virtual Annual General Meeting (e-AGM) was held on Monday, July 27 at 6.30 pm. A quorum was reached with 290 principal members who signed in to watch the live webcast. In total, we had a record number of 601 principal members who registered online to submit questions and/or proxy forms for voting on AGM matters.

Reasons for a virtual AGMTraditionally held in April, the AGM 2020 was deferred by three months due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainties affecting how we can conduct large-scale meetings. In line with the Registry of Societies (ROS) guidelines, and taking reference from other golf clubs that have conducted AGMs during this exceptional period, our AGM 2020 was conducted via a virtual platform with the proceedings broadcasted live to participating principal members. While the Management Committee (MC) had preferred a

face-to-face physical meeting, it was not prudent to hold back the AGM indefinitely as it was not possible to predict how the COVID-19 situation may develop.

Preparation for the e-AGMBeing the first virtual AGM, the Club anticipated that not all members may be accustomed to the new format of meeting. Careful steps were taken to ensure that information

was disseminated through various communications channels such as email, post, notice boards, website and social media. Additional time was provided for AOB submissions whereby members were given 19 calendar days instead of the required seven (7) clear days. A 24-hour hotline service and onsite assistance by e-AGM ambassadors were available to guide members on how to register online.

Special help lines were opened on the day of e-AGM to provide member assistance to sign in for the live webcast.

e-AGM 2020 proceedingsPresident Lai Mun Onn officially opened the AGM 2020 at 6.30 pm with a quorum of 290 principal members registered online. He thanked members for their kind understanding and cooperation. A video of the Club’s 2019 review and responses to the COVID-19 pandemic was shown to members before the meeting proceeded according to the AGM Agenda. The Financial Highlights for 2019 were presented by TreasurerLim Chin Chuan in a pre-recorded video. In accordance with the Agenda and vote count, the President received the Annual Report and passed the Accounts for the year ended Dec 31. 2019; and appointed the external auditor for the ensuing year.

Management Committee (MC)The President welcomed the newly appointed Captain, Mr Ng Luo Yi, and thanked outgoing Captain CS Kong for his contributions in the past eight years. MC members who were returned unopposed were Vice-President Eric Tan; Convenor Michael Goo (Billiards & Bowling); Convenor Derrick Lee (House & Bar); Convenor Peter Teo (Newsletter); and Convenor Kamal Ehsan (Tennis). The contested posts of Vice-Captain and Convenor (Swimming and Entertainment) were won respectively by Mr Anthony Stacy Maniam and Mr Ricky Aw who contested against incumbent Mr Alan Lee and Mr Perera Edward Clarence. The President thanked Mr Lee and Mr Perera for their participation in the elections, and welcomed Mr Maniam and Mr Aw to the MC.

Any Other Business (AOB)Due to the new format of e-AGM 2020, members were provided

additional time to submit their questions via the e-platform. The period for submission of questions was from July 1 to July 19, 2020 at 5.00 pm. President Lai thanked members who have written in and assured that replies had been sent directly to these members. He also acknowledged that a virtual e-AGM may not be the best way to fully address members’ questions and smaller online meetings could be organized after the e-AGM to discuss matters of concern. For the benefit of all members who were participating in the e-AGM, the questions submitted were categorized by topics and addressed correspondingly by Secretary Eddy Ng, Treasurer Lim Chin Chuan, Vice-President Eric Tan and Captain CS Kong. President Lai officially called the AGM to close at 7.15 pm.

GOLF NEWS

Once again and possibly for the last time, we will be hosting the Keppel Charity Golf at our Bukit Chermin golf course.

This year marks our 50th Charity Golf Anniversary from our first event in 1970. In the past seven consecutive years we have raised over $1 million for our beneficiaries. Last year, the Club joined the President’s Challenge as a fundraising partner in a star-studded event and a gala dinner graced by Her Excellency President Halimah Yacob. With the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic and imminent economic slowdown, will we continue to perform as well or better than previous years? We know it will be challenging but we are hopeful our sponsors, donors and members will

be generous in times like this when the spirit of giving must be stronger. The charities need our help more than ever and we will not letthem down. Keppel Charity Golf 2020 will be different in style and format from what we are familiar with. We expect that safe measurements will still be in place and that large gatherings such as the highlight gala dinner may not be permissible. Yet we are determined to make the event a memorable one for all participants. You are cordially invited to join us in this coming Keppel Charity Golf on the weekend of Oct 24 and 25. This may be the final Keppel Golf Charity to be held in our historical course and we look forward to your participation.

By Helen Neo, NewsletterSub-Committee member

Cambodia was not in our travel bucket list but my husband and I were convinced to visit Siem Reap by one of our golfing friends who opened a hotel in the ancient city.

Our experience began in the hotel bus when we received our welcome drink in a glass mug with a lemongrass straw. It was the first time I drank with a lemongrass straw and was surprised by the clever use of a fragrant plant. We checked in Memoire Palace Resort & Spa located on a sprawling piece of land in the city centre. The hotel is largely European in design

considering that Cambodia was under French rule for almost a century. The French influence is still prominently present in the country’s architecture, food and culture. The reception area is huge and decorated with colourful lanterns made of painted recycled plastic water bottles. Memoire prides itself as being environmentally friendly and uses recycled or natural material as much as possible. The hotel has many blocks of rooms surrounding an impressive pool with a bar raised. Our hotel room was spacious and we were greeted with a box of freshly made homemade macaron, éclair and tarts.

Six kilometres from our hotel is the Angkor Golf Resort where we had a round of golf. The par 72 course was designed by Nick Faldo as a championship course. It is mostly flat with generous fairways and a pond or lake in every hole. We had an enjoyable round of golf before heading to the famous Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat, a World Heritage Site, is an enormous temple complex and is the largest religious monument in the world. Originally constructed by the Khmer Empire as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, it has beautifully carved bas reliefs depicting scenes from the Indian

epic Ramayan and the life of King Suryariman II, Khmer’s powerful ruler of the 12th century whose tomb remains on site. It was a long walk on mud track from the dusty car park to the ruin but it was worth the effort. Though it was physically demanding, it is indeed a marvel to see the sculptures and relics of this symbolic place. At the end of the tour, we treated ourselves to refreshing coconut water from the

fruit freshly cut by a street vendor. It was the most thirst-quenching drink after a long and stimulating afternoon immersed in history.

Caring for the environment has

been a core aspect of Keppel Club’s

Corporate Social Responsibility

(CSR) initiatives. Started in 2008,

the Earth Week exhibition has been

inspiring our visitors to do their part

in protecting the environment at

home and when we travel overseas.

Earth Weel 2013, graced by former President of Singapore Dr Tony Tan.

By Andre C. Neville

This month, the Keppel Heritage series explores the scale of Earth Week, along with some of the event’s exhibits that have left lasting impressions in the minds of not only the Club’s members, but also the general public over the years.

Earth Week at a glance Typically organised within the confines of an indoor landscape in Keppel Hall, the exhibition revolved around varying themes. Visitors were treated to interactive and interesting activities that highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability and conservation practices.

First known as Earth Day, the inaugural weekend exhibition was launched by then Club Chairman Fock Siew Wah and then Club President Edwin Khew to raise awareness on the role we play as custodians of the environment. In addition, it was also a demonstration of the Club’s maiden efforts of going Green.

Following overwhelming response from its inception in 2008, what was known as ‘Earth Day’ became ‘Earth Week’ the following year. Earth Week was an ambitious programme when the Club took upon itself to initiate outreach and community engagements with daily tours, talks and shows for members, guests, schools and interest groups.

Educating future generations.

HERITAGE NEWS

Earth Week 2017/8 (combined show), Hobbit Town.

One of the exhibits was a replica of Kampung Agas, a Malay village located in the present golf course until the 1970s. Visitors were treated to the practices of bygone days when natural material such as leaves and shells were used for packaging and as containers. This exhibit later became a mainstay throughout the exhibition’s history, making it an iconic part of Earth Week.

In 2011, then Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, opened the event, marking the first time a Minister had graced Earth Week as the Guest-of-Honour. It was also the first time that our ‘Go Green Earth Week’ collaborated with the Public Utilities Board (PUB) as a co-located partner in the Singapore International Water Week event. The exhibition also supported the United Nations’ commission of 2011 as the International Year of the Forest.

Extending our reachIn 2013, we were invited to hold our Earth Week exhibition in Gardens by the Bay. Themed ‘Pandora 3D’, the exhibition conveyed green messages through the use of visually stunning three-dimensional exhibits. The exhibition was graced by former President of Singapore Dr Tony Tan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

In celebration of Earth Week’s 10th anniversary in 2018, the Club teamed up with the National Environment Agency (NEA) to support the Climate Action SG campaign for a sustainable Singapore. The theme was Hobbit Town and the exhibition was filled with environmental stories and displays that were informative and attractive to both young and old.

Besides the exhibition at Keppel Hall, fringe activities such as walking trails at Berlayer Creek and nature tours in the golf course, were organized for visitors to gain insightful knowledge of the natural habitats of plant and animal life across Keppel Club and its surroundings.

Keppel Club is first and probably only golf club in Singapore to commit our CSR efforts towards educating future generations about the significance of environmental protection and waste management practices in order to secure a better tomorrow for all.

Singapore Food Culture

Laksa

Food in Singapore is a delicious blend of cuisines and cultures brought in by early immigrants from different countries and improvised over time using local ingredients. In this issue, we feature a popular dish that can be found in almost any local food court or lovingly prepared at home.

One of the most popular and common dishes is Laksa. It is cooked with white rice or yellow wheat noodles in creamy coconut milk and curry paste base and served with fiery lashings of chilli. It is typically served with prawns and/or chicken, deep-fried tofu, quail eggs, slices of fish cakes and sometimes fresh cockles.

The dish is said to have originated from the cooking styles of intermarriages between local Malay women and Chinese traders who arrived in Singapore in the 15th to 17th centuries. This intermarriage gave birth to a unique culture known as Peranakan or Straits-born Chinese.

Laksa can be found in our Tee Top Menu in traditional soup base or fried with seafood.

Why is this critical?

Simply because unlike most other mistakes, this one is potentially irreversible! We may be around to fix other things but not our Will.

Hence, while it is beneficial to raise our understanding of how a Will works, attempting to write your own Will is not recommended. The stakes are high compared to the cost of consulting and engaging a lawyer to help you.

Do not put off writing your Will if yours is not settled yet. If you already have a Will, it is a good time to review and consider if it needs updating.

Here is a quick view of the four mistakes to avoid:

1. No Will – failing to make one on time.2. Invalid Will – failing to meet the legal requirements.3. Missing Will – failing to keep it in a safe and known custody.4. Misdirected Will – failing to ensure it is exactly what you wanted.

#1 Make a Will if You Have NotWithout a Will, you’re subjecting your family to intestate laws and Court processes. Such laws govern the distribution of a person’s estate when he or she passes on without a Will (intestate). While the law is fair, it may not match your exact intentions and specific wishes. You will not have your last say on things that may impact your loved ones. Instead, the Court will decide for you. The assets in your estate will also be frozen until the Court’s legal decision-making process has been completed. It will usually take a longer time for your beneficiaries to receive what you wish to give them.

#2 Review and Update Your WillPeople make Wills at different ages. Over time, our life stage and situation change. Most children will get married. The type and amount of our assets change. Hence, where necessary, you may wish to consider reviewing and updating your Will to reflect your best wishes. When doing so, your latest Will needs to have a revocation clause to state that any earlier Wills are thereby revoked and nullified. This will ensure your latest wishes are carried out. It prevents disputes on which is the applicable final Will.

#3 Ensure the Validity of Your WillDo your preparatory work, and then engage a lawyer who is experienced with Wills. Decide who will be your beneficiaries and executors. If your children are minors, you need to decide who will be their guardians. List out your main assets, and how you wish to distribute them. Share your wishes with your lawyer, ask questions, and ensure what you want is correctly covered. Then take time to review the Will drafted by your lawyer before signing it. Among other things for a Will to be valid, it must be witnessed and signed in your presence by two or more persons who are (a) 21 years of age and above, (b) present at the same time, and (c) not your beneficiaries nor spouses of your beneficiaries.

#4 Appoint Executors and TrusteesYou would need to appoint at least one and up to four persons whom you trust as the Executor/s and Trustee/s of your Will. Executors and Trustees have a fiduciary duty to beneficiaries. They are usually close family members and/or trusted life-long friends. An Executor and Trustee can also be a beneficiary of the Will. Executors are responsible for administering and managing the estate until its final distribution. This involves doing what is necessary to fulfil the wishes in the Will. Trustees are usually the same persons as Executors, and they perform the same basic role. However, their duties may involve any ongoing management of assets of the estate that are held on trust and may not yet be distributed.

#5 Add Special Considerations if anyYou may have reasons not to have some assets distributed immediately to one or more beneficiaries but held in trust by the Trustee/s. This creates a testamentary trust within your Will. You may set the age or other conditions for distribution later. There could be other special consideration or provision in your Will for the long-term financial support of a son or daughter with special needs. This can be possibly done through the earmarking of properties or rental proceeds of properties for such purposes. Should parents bequeath assets to their child with special needs who lacks mental capacity, it is important to have at least a sibling or trusted caregiver appointed to act as a Deputy. Prior application has to be made to the Family Justice Courts. The appointed Deputy can then manage the assets on behalf of the child. More about Deputyship will be covered at the end of this series. Parents need to evaluate whether it is better to bequeath such assets directly to a child who lacks mental capacity, or to apply other ways of providing for the child’s long-term financial support with less legal and administrative encumbrances.

#6 Safekeep in an Accessible PlaceA potentially unfortunate mistake is to have a Will that cannot be found when it is needed. “Accessibility” does not mean that your Will should be given to your Executor or family members. It means the known location of the original copy of the Will that is retrievable by an Executor and/or close family members. The contents of the Will, however, should be kept confidential. Spouses, of course, may know the contents of the Will. This is because they would have discussed it or may have made Wills that mirror each other.

Having made a Will, therefore, you need to follow-up with two other important actions. Firstly, your Will can be registered at the Wills Registry maintained by the Public Trustee. The Registry does not keep a copy of your Will but only information on the existence of your Will; such as the date and details of the person who made the Will; the person who drew up the Will, and where the Will was held. Secondly, your Will should be kept in a safe and secure place where it can be located and conveniently retrieved. You should inform your spouse or closest next-of-kin of the location where your Will is safely kept! Other than keeping it locked at home, it can also be safely kept by a company that provides custody services for Wills.
