WE KNOW HOW HARD DAIRY FARMING IS THESE DAYS.LAND AND WATER PRESSURES ARE GROWING; THE COST OF FEED, REPLACEMENTS, INFRASTRUCTURE AND ANIMAL HEALTH ARE ALL INCREASING; WE ALSO KNOW THAT FERTILITY AND INBREEDING IS A PROBLEM AND THAT THE WORLD IS MORE FOCUSED ON MILK PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY.

How do we know all this?

Because we’re dairy farmers too.

LIC is 100% dairy farmer owned. That’s why everything we do as a company is about making life better and easier for dairy farmers, wherever in the world they farm.

This booklet outlines the 4 things we’ve identifi ed to make you smile.

GENERATION NEXT LOVES TO SMILE

“The superiority of LIC genetics has played and major role in enabling us to grow the herd over the last decade. Herd fertility and durability have both improved, as have milk solids and profi tability”

Robert Craig

PROFITABILITYIMPROVED FERTILITY, LONGEVITY AND GENETIC GAIN ALL ADD UP TO IMPROVED PROFITABILITY. THE FACT IS , UNDER MOST DAIRY SYSTEMS, WHETHER IT BE PASTURE BASED, HIGH INPUT OR HIGH STOCKING RATES, LIC GENETICS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO MAKE YOUR OPERATION MORE PROFITABLE.

Over the two years before a heifer is a productive member of your herd it will consume 2-3 tonnes of dry matter. This is feed that could otherwise be used to generate milk solids if fed to a productive cow.

By extending the longevity of your herd through the use of LIC semen you can reduce the number of replacements you need to rear each year, therefore reducing the amount of feed being used to rear replacements.

By halving the amount of feed being used to rear replacements you are able to increase the proportion of your feed being used to generate revenue. This, combined with the productivity improvements made by cows reaching their peak productivity in years fi ve and six will have a marked effect on your profi tability.

GENERATION NEXT LOVES TO SMILE

IT ALL STARTS WITH FERTILITYBecause the New Zealand dairy industry does not have the natural advantages that make wide-scale high-input farming economically feasible, the line between a productive and non-productive animal is much clearer than in many other systems.

This has led to the development (through years of selective culling) of a national herd containing cattle that are extremely fertile with a very short calving interval, higher longevity and greater number of lactations than animals in all other major dairying nations.

It is these advantages that make LIC genetics so valuable in any dairy herd.

FERTILITY

“Fertility has undoubtedly improved. Over the last four years our empty rate has decreased by 10-12% over 12 weeks. This year we have had a 90% success rate to fi rst inseminations (cows and heifers). Our second year heifers are housed in outdoor cubicles - 90% will calf within six weeks.”

Matt Pilkington - 350 cows

LONGEVITY

“LIC animals last in the herd. The longevity has been proven time and time again. When other animals get health and lameness problems and drop out of the herd, LIC cows persevere. They are easy care animals, they are strong on their feet - noticeably more than other cows. They thrive on pasture and in-calf rates are improving steadily for the whole herd.”

Mike Kyle - 650 cows

DAIRY CATTLE PRODUCTIVITY PEAKS AT THE FOURTH AND FIFTH LACTATIONS. IF AN ANIMAL DOES NOT REMAIN IN THE HERD UNTIL SHE IS SIX YEARS OLD, SHE WILL NOT ACHIEVE HER OPTIMUM PRODUCTIVITY. LIC GENETICS CAN HELP YOU INCREASE THE NUMBER OF LACTATIONS YOUR ANIMALS STAY IN THE HERD BY IMPROVING FERTILITY. This in turn drives the overall lifetime productivity of each animal and reduces the number of replacements you need to breed each year.

By reducing the number of replacements you must rear each year you can reduce the percentage of feed consumed by non-productive heifers, and increase the percentage of feed being used to generate milksolids.

GENETIC GAIN

“I have been using LIC genetics for the past eleven years and am delighted with my effi cient, profi table, easy to manage herd.”

Mat Boley

WITH LIVESTOCK IMPROVEMENT SEMEN YOU ARE MAKING HIGHER LEVELS OF GENETIC GAIN, FASTER.THIS ISN’T A ONE OFF IMPACT. IT ACCUMULATES (LIKE INTEREST) TO CREATE A MULTIPLIER OF GENETIC GAIN.Genetics accounts for 60% of the gain in milk solids production (trend).

Over 19 years, the average New Zealand milk solids production increased by 70kg per cow. Of this, 42kg is attributed to Genetic Improvement while the average live weight has remained constant.
