The Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA) is

closely linked to Chile’s nutritional and food history. As a

national and Latin American scientific benchmark, we are

committed to supporting decision-making that improves

the population’s well-being and safeguards food quality

and safety. Thus, we participate in most stages of food

and nutrition related public policymaking.

In the years to come, major changes are expected

in food availability, water resources, and agri-foods.

Beyond guaranteeing demand, food security will entail

developing safe, sufficient, and nutritious food. In this

challenge, research, development, and technological

innovation will be fundamental pillars.

In this scenario, INTA will remain at the forefront of

knowledge in these areas, providing scientific evidence

and applied solutions that benefit all citizens. In doing

so, we will contribute to breaking away from the chain of

poverty and inequality and advancing the right to ade-

quate nutrition and food.

El Instituto de Nutrición y Tecnología de los Alimentos

(INTA) está estrechamente ligado a la historia nutricional

y alimentaria de Chile. Como referente científico nacio-

nal y latinoamericano, es nuestro deber apoyar la toma

de decisiones que mejoren el bienestar de la población

y resguarden la calidad y seguridad de su alimentación.

Así, participamos en las diversas etapas que implica la

generación de políticas públicas en el ámbito de la ali-

mentación y nutrición.

En los años venideros se vislumbran cambios radicales

en la disponibilidad de alimentos, recursos hídricos y

agroalimentarios. La seguridad alimentaria, más allá de

garantizar la demanda, conllevará el desarrollo y produc-

ción de alimentos seguros, suficientes y nutritivos. En

este desafío la investigación, el desarrollo y la innova-

ción tecnológica serán pilares fundamentales.

En este escenario, el INTA deberá seguir a la vanguardia

del conocimiento en estas áreas, aportando evidencia

científica y soluciones aplicadas que vayan en benefi-

cio de la ciudadanía. De esta forma, contribuiremos a

desarticular los eslabones en una cadena de pobreza y

desigualdad y a promover el derecho a la nutrición y la

alimentación saludables.

About us

The Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology Dr. Fer-

nando Mönckeberg Barros (INTA) is an interdisciplinary

body of the University of Chile. Its beginnings date back

to 1954, followed by 20 years of institutional develop-

ment. In 1976, it became an institute dependent on the

Rector of the University. It aims to investigate nutrition

throughout the life span, factors affecting food produc-

tion and security, and foods’ nutritional effects, at the

individual and population levels.

We aim to be a national and international leader in trans-

disciplinary research in nutrition and food through the

development of scientific knowledge that promotes the

population’s well-being, according to the changing and

global environment’s challenges.

By conducting scientific research of excellence, we

promote transdisciplinary knowledge generation, the

development of advanced human capital, and knowle-

dge transfer and sharing. Accordingly, we contribute to

optimal nutrition, health, and quality of life of the Chilean

and Latin American populations.

El Instituto de Nutrición y Tecnología de los Alimen-

tos Doctor Fernando Mönckeberg Barros (INTA) es un

organismo interdisciplinario de la Universidad de Chile.

Sus inicios se remontan a 1954, seguidos de 20 años

de un proceso de desarrollo institucional. En 1976, se

consolida como instituto dependiente de la Rectoría.

Actualmente, su principal objetivo es la investigación de

la nutrición a lo largo del ciclo vital, factores que permi-

tan una adecuada producción de alimentos, y el impacto

nutricional individual y poblacional.

El INTA aspira a ser un líder nacional e internacional en

investigación transdisciplinaria en nutrición y alimentos,

mediante el desarrollo de conocimiento que promueva el

bienestar de la población, según los desafíos que plan-

tea el ambiente cambiante y global.

A través del desarrollo de investigación científica de

excelencia, promovemos la generación de conocimiento

transdisciplinario, la formación de capital humano avan-

zado y la transferencia de conocimiento, contribuyendo

a una óptima nutrición, salud y calidad de vida de la

población chilena y latinoamericana.

INTA is a transdisciplinary research institute in Chile that

has successfully translated research to improve the po-

pulation’s well-being. It takes a science-based approach

towards defining food security strategies by studying all

the food value chain stages and how it relates to Human

Nutrition and Public Health throughout the entire life-cycle.

Research in INTA is a collaborative effort involving aca-

demics, researchers, and students. Students and young

investigators have the opportunity to train in an interna-

tionally competitive research environment, which prepa-

red them to perform forefront transdisciplinary research

in nutrition sciences and food technology.

INTA’s research activity is recognized nationally and in-

ternationally. Results are published in top internationally

indexed journals and we receive funding from national

and international competitive grants. Many of our acade-

mics serve as experts, consultants, and board members

of scientific committees, governmental agencies, and

international organizations to translate their expertise to

society.

El INTA es un instituto de investigación transdisciplinario

que genera conocimiento para mejorar el bienestar de

la población. Empleamos un enfoque científico basado

en evidencia para definir estrategias para la seguridad

alimentaria, estudiando todas las etapas de la cadena de

valor de los alimentos y su relación con la nutrición hu-

mana y la salud pública a lo largo de todo el ciclo vital.

La investigación en el INTA es un esfuerzo conjunto

entre académicos, investigadores y estudiantes. En un

entorno de investigación competitivo a nivel internacio-

nal, se brinda a los estudiantes la oportunidad de capa-

citarse para conducir investigación transdisciplinaria de

vanguardia en nutrición y tecnología de alimentos.

Nuestro trabajo es reconocido nacional e internacional-

mente. Los resultados que surgen del mismo se publican

en las principales revistas indexadas y se financian con

proyectos competitivos nacionales e internacionales.

Además, muchos académicos participan como expertos,

consultores y consejeros en comités científicos, agen-

cias gubernamentales y organismos internacionales para

trasferir su experiencia a la sociedad.

Research conducted here is carried out with inter-,

In recent years, the research carried out at INTA has

resulted in an average of 120 annual publications in

indexed scientific journals. Most of them, classified in the

two upper quartiles of their areas of knowledge.

Much of our academics’ scientific knowledge has led to

significant contributions at the national and Latin Ameri-

can levels. Similarly, three of our academics received the

National Award for Applied Sciences & Technology.

INTA is open to the challenges that may arise and new

technologies that cross the traditional scientific specia-

lization barriers. We expect to continue innovating so

that research has a real impact on human wellbeing and

planetary health.

En los últimos años, la investigación realizada en el INTA

ha generado una media de 120 publicaciones anuales

en revistas científicas indexadas. La mayoría de ellas,

clasificada en los dos cuartiles superiores de sus áreas

de conocimiento.

Gran parte de la evidencia científica producida por nues-

tros académicos se ha manifestado en aportes concre-

tos, a nivel nacional y latinoamericano. Un ejemplo de

esto es que tres de nuestros profesores han sido galar-

donados con el Premio Nacional de Ciencias Aplicadas y

Tecnológicas.

Nuestro Instituto está abierto a los desafíos que puedan

surgir y a las nuevas tecnologías que crucen las barreras

tradicionales de las especializaciones científicas. Quere-

mos seguir innovando para que la investigación tenga un

impacto real en el bienestar humano y la salud planeta-

ria.

La Escuela de Postgrado es la unidad académica que

organiza, administra e imparte los estudios conducentes

a la obtención de grados académicos y tiene la respon-

sabilidad de velar por la excelencia de los estudios. Su

función es la formación de capital humano avanzado en

el área de la nutrición y alimentos, formando científicos

y profesionales que contribuyan a la óptima nutrición,

salud y bienestar de la población. Cuenta con programas

de doctorado y magíster, cursos de especialización de

postítulo, diplomas de postítulo y cursos de perfeccio-

namiento.

Para desarrollar sus actividades curriculares, los estu-

diantes acceden a plataformas digitales como U-Cam-

pus, U-Cursos y U-Tesis.

Los programas impartidos en el INTA tienen un sello de

calidad educativa y excelencia académica, siendo reco-

nocidos nacional e internacionalmente. Para ello, existe

un sistema de gestión de calidad, innovación y autoeva-

luación permanente, para entregar educación confiable y

relevante en el área de la nutrición y alimentos.

The Graduate School is responsible for organizing,

managing, and conducting the educational programs

leading to academic degrees. It is also responsible for

ensuring their excellence in quality. Its main goal is to

promote knowledge generation, research, and profes-

sional training to contribute to the population’s optimal

nutrition, health, and wellbeing. To do so, INTA offers

PhD and MSc Programs, postgraduate specialization

courses, postgraduate diplomas, and advanced courses.

Students access digital platforms such as U-Campus,

U-Cursos and U-Tesis, to perform their curricular activi-

ties.

INTA graduate programs are recognized nationally and

internationally for their quality and academic excellence.

Quality management, innovation, and self-evaluation

systems allow delivering reliable and up-to-date nutri-

tion and food education.

Programa interfacultades de la Universidad de Chile, acre-ditado por 7 años (2019-2026). Además del INTA, tam-bién participan las facultades de Ciencias Agronómicas, Ciencias Químicas y Farmacéuticas, Ciencias Veterinarias y Pecuarias, y Medicina. Sus graduados desarrollan investi-gación original y relevante en el ámbito de la nutrición y alimentos e imparten docencia a un nivel de mayor exce-lencia con innovación científica y tecnológica.

Programa acreditado por 5 años (2019-2024), impartido por el INTA y las facultades de Ciencias Agronómicas, Ciencias Veterinarias y Pecuarias de la Universidad de Chile, la Universidad Católica del Norte y la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. Entrega formación actualizada en acuicultura, capacitando para incorporarse al sector privado o público, y participar en procesos de desarrollo, innovación y diversificación de esta actividad.

Programa interfacultades del Campus Sur de la Universi-dad de Chile (INTA y Facultades de Ciencias Agronómicas, Ciencias Veterinarias y Pecuarias, y Ciencias Forestales y de la Conservación de la Naturaleza). Los graduados son capaces de realizar investigación en forma autónoma y obtener resultados que aporten al conocimiento, innova-ción y generación de aplicaciones tecnológicas (acredita-do 2018-2021, en proceso de reacreditación).

Collaborative MSc Program of the University of Chile certified for 7 years (2019-2026). In addition to INTA, it involves the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, and Medicine. Graduates are capable of developing original and relevant research in nutrition and food. They are also provided with the scientific and technological innovation skills that prepare them for excellence in teaching.

Collaborative MSc Program involving the University of Chile (INTA and the Faculties of Agricultural and Veteri-nary Sciences), the Catholic University of the North, and the Catholic University of Valparaíso. Provides up-to-date training in aquaculture, training to join the private or public sector, and participating in development, innovation and diversification processes of this activity.

Collaborative MSc program involving the University of Chiles’ Southern Campus (INTA and the Faculties of Agri-cultural, Veterinary, and Forestry Sciences and Conserva-tion of Nature). Graduates are trained to conduct research independently and obtain results that contribute to knowledge, innovation and technological applications (certified 2018-2021, under recertification).

La Subdirección de Educación Continua (DEC) se ocupa de la educación no conducente a grado académico: diplo-mas y cursos de perfeccionamiento. Estos programas se imparten en modalidad e-learning, b-learning y presencial. La DEC organiza, planifica y evalúa la formulación, eje-cución y calidad de los programas, el uso de estrategias educativas y la gestión administrativa de la educación con-tinua. Presta asesoría técnica y pedagógica a todos sus programas, incluyendo apoyo en tecnologías educativas y soporte técnico en el Aula Virtual del INTA. Es responsa-ble de elaborar propuestas de planes de desarrollo de la educación continua.

La Escuela de Postgrado promueve la internacionalización del INTA mediante la Oficina de Asuntos Internaciona-les (OAI), impulsando la colaboración entre académicos e investigadores con contrapartes en instituciones de educación superior del extranjero. Esto fomenta visiones multiculturales y potencia la internacionalización de la malla curricular docente. La OAI también apoya la gestión internacional de la Dirección del INTA, de sus distintas uni-dades académicas y es el punto focal para todo lo relacio-nado a lo internacional ante los estamentos centrales de la Universidad de Chile.

The Division of Continuing Education (DEC) deals with education not leading to an academic degree: diplomas and advanced courses of different duration. These pro-grams are delivered e-learning, b-learning and on-cam-pus. DEC organizes, plans and assesses the design, exe-cution and quality of programs, educational strategies, and the administrative management of continuing education. It provides technical and pedagogical support to all its programs. DEC is also responsible for preparing proposals for development plans for continuing education.

The Postgraduate School is committed to INTA’s inter-nationalization. The Office of International Affairs (OAI) promotes links between academics and researchers with collaborators from abroad through research agreements and student and investigators mobility. These connections foster multicultural visions and enhance the academic curriculum’s internationalization. The OAI also supports the international projection of INTA’s Director Office and academic divisions. It also serves as a focal point for the University of Chile’s central services in international affairs related issues.

Community outreach and Communication


La Dirección de Extensión y Comunicaciones es el

órgano encargado de impulsar y desarrollar la estrate-

gia institucional de vinculación con el medio. Esta se

entiende como el conjunto de acciones bidireccionales

que incorporan la perspectiva de nuestro Instituto y la

de la comunidad, en busca de beneficios mutuos para la

academia y su entorno. Esta relación entre la comunidad

académica del INTA y distintos actores de la sociedad es

vital para comprender, incidir y aportar a visiones esen-

ciales sobre desarrollo, generación de conocimiento,

innovación, y responsabilidad social.

Parte de su misión es difundir el quehacer del INTA tanto

a nivel de la Universidad de Chile como de la comuni-

dad nacional e internacional. Al mismo tiempo, vincula

al Instituto con el resto de la Universidad y la comunidad

académica; organismos públicos, gubernamentales y

no gubernamentales; y organizaciones sociales. De este

modo, promueve el desarrollo de actividades que buscan

situar al Instituto como principal referente nacional en el

ámbito de la nutrición y alimentación.

The Community Outreach and Communication Direc-

torate promotes and develops the institutional strate-

gy to connect INTA with the community. This includes

bidirectional actions that integrate our Institute and the

community’s perspective in search of mutual benefits for

the academy and the society. This relationship between

INTA and different social groups is vital to understan-

ding, influencing, and contributing to essential visions

on development, knowledge generation, innovation, and

social responsibility.

Part of this Directorate mission is to disseminate the

work of INTA to the University of Chile and the national

and international communities. It links the Institute with

the University and the academic community; public,

governmental, and non-governmental organizations; and

social organizations. Doing so promotes the develop-

ment of activities that seek to place INTA as the leading

academic institution in nutrition and food sciences.

The Community Outreach and Communication Directo-

rate is responsible for managing the institutional website

and the relationship with the media. It also offers cour-

ses and diplomas aimed at the general public and pro-

fessionals from private or public institutions, both online

and on-campus.

While these short courses and diplomas do not lead to

an academic degree, they are essential tools for training,

update, and development, connecting students with their

professional area’s application field.

These training programs cover areas as diverse as food

safety, nutrition, healthy eating, public health and health

research statistics.

EXTEN SI ÓN Y COMUNICACIONE S

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATION

La Dirección de Extensión y Comunicaciones es respon-

sable de los contenidos oficiales de la institución en su

página web y de la relación del INTA con los medios de

información escritos y audiovisuales. También es la encar-

gada de realizar cursos y diplomas de extensión, dirigidos

a distintos tipos de personas e instituciones públicas o

privadas, en modalidad a distancia y presencial.

Aunque estos cursos y diplomas no son conducentes a

grado académico, son una importante herramienta de

perfeccionamiento que conecta a los estudiantes con la

aplicación en terreno de sus conocimientos profesionales.

Las áreas que abarcan estos cursos y diplomas son muy

diversas e incluyen la inocuidad alimentaria, nutrición,

alimentación saludable y salud pública, así como el uso de

herramientas estadísticas aplicadas al área de la salud.

Profesor Titular, fundador y Director del INTA (1976-1994). Su lucha contra la desnutrición infantil hizo de Chile un país con altos estándares en salud, baja mortalidad infantil, e indicadores de desarrollo humano y social superiores a los de países con ingreso per cápita de similar cuantía.

Full Professor, founder, and Director of INTA (1976-1994). His fight against child undernutrition placed Chile as a country of higher health standards, lower infant mortality, and higher human and social development indicators than countries with similar per capita income.

Profesor Titular y Director del INTA (1994-2006). Destaca su trabajo en ácidos grasos esenciales y desarrollo cerebral; deficiencia y exceso de cobre; necesidades proteicas y energéticas en salud y enfermedad; enfermedades crónicas asociadas a la nutrición; y papel de la nutrición y ejercicio en el riesgo de cáncer.

Full Professor and Director of INTA (1994-2006). Of particular interest are his work on essential fatty acids and brain development; health effects of copper deficiency and excess; protein and energy needs in health and dis-ease; nutrition-related chronic diseases; and the role of nutrition and exercise in cancer risk.

Profesor Titular. Contribuyó a descubrir bacterias que permitieron el desarrollo de estudios pioneros en biología mole-cular y epidemiología y la generación de herramientas preciadas en la ingeniería genética. Además, contribuyó a identifi-car agentes patógenos responsables de una fracción importante de la mortalidad infantil.

Full Professor. He contributed to dis-covering bacteria that allowed pioneer-ing studies in molecular biology and epidemiology and the generation of vital genetic engineering tools. Also, he contributed to identifying pathogens re-sponsible for significant shares of infant mortality.

La misión del Centro de Diagnóstico (CEDINTA) es ser

líder nacional en el enfrentamiento de patologías con

manejo nutricional complejo, mediante atención clínica

transdisciplinaria y de calidad. Además, promueve el

desarrollo de investigación enfocada al bienestar de la

población. Aquí se desarrollan los policlínicos de erro-

res innatos del metabolismo (EIM), genética, obesidad,

gastroenterología y endocrinología. También tiene lugar

el control de participantes en proyectos de investigación

sobre obesidad, envejecimiento y mineralización ósea.

La docencia a profesionales de la salud de Chile y

Latinoamérica nos permite formar a futuros nutricionis-

tas, neuropediatras, neonatólogos, gastroenterólogos,

pediatras y genetistas. Acogemos diversos programas

ministeriales que se desarrollan en nuestras dependen-

cias. Como ejemplo, pacientes con Errores Innatos del

Metabolismo, quienes además de recibir atención clínica

tienen un laboratorio diagnóstico y reciben formulas

especiales, financiadas por el Programa Nacional de

Alimentación Complementaria. La asistencia clínica

concebida como un conjunto de actividades más allá de

la atención de pacientes, en áreas no abordadas en otras

instituciones, es congruente con la misión del INTA y

nuestra Universidad.

La Dirección de Asistencia Técnica conecta la actividad

académica del INTA con la industria alimentaria y far-

macéutica y organismos públicos. Mediante los servi-

cios contribuimos a mejorar la calidad nutricional de los

alimentos y fomentamos hábitos alimentarios saludables.

Certificamos la composición nutricional de alimentos,

nutracéuticos y suplementos alimentarios, y otorgamos

el sello INTA en el envase. Este es reconocido y valorado

por el consumidor.

We certify the nutritional composition of food, nutraceu-

ticals and food supplements and grant the INTA-mark on

the packaging, which is recognized and valued by the

consumer.

Auditorias en casinos, restaurantes y servicios de alimenta-

ción colectiva para la implementación de estos sistemas.

Audits in cafeterias, restaurants, and canteens to imple-

ment good manufacturing practices (GMP) and hazard

analysis and critical control points (HACCP).

Se realizan a solicitud de la empresa y permiten conocer

el impacto de ingredientes funcionales o nutracéuticos

en la salud. Conducted at the request of a company to study the

impact of consuming specific functional ingredients or

nutraceuticals on people’s health.

Intervenciones en alimentación saludable y calidad de

vida en empresas para mejorar el estado nutricional,

hábitos alimentarios y bienestar de sus trabajadores. Interventions to promote healthy eating and quality of

working life to improve nutritional status, dietary habits,

and wellbeing.

The Diagnosis Center (CEDINTA) mission is to be a

national leader in confronting pathologies with complex

nutritional management through transdisciplinary and

high-quality clinical care. Also, it promotes research

focused on the population’s well-being. Here are the

polyclinics of innate metabolism errors (IMD), genetics,

obesity, gastroenterology, and endocrinology.

Participants in research projects on obesity, aging,

and bone mineralization also attend this facility. Tea-

ching health professionals from Chile and Latin America

allows training future nutritionists, neuropediatricians,

neonatologists, gastroenterologists, pediatricians, and

geneticists. Attention to patients from several ministerial

programs also takes place at CEDINTA. In addition to

receiving clinical care, patients with metabolic diseases

have a diagnostic laboratory and receive special formu-

las financed by the National Complementary Feeding

Program. Clinical care, conceived as a series of activities

beyond outpatient service in areas not addressed by

other institutions, is consistent with INTA and our Univer-

sity’s mission.

The Technical Assistance Division links INTA’s academic

activity with the food and pharmaceutical industry and

public agencies. We contribute to improving the foods’

nutritional quality and promoting healthy eating through

services and assistance.
