editorialI apologize. This magazine is late. However, in my defense, I had a lot of material tocover. So much material that I got to 100 pages for this edition and I called it quits. (I’msure there are several typos as I did a lot of writing in just a few days.) I’m going toinclude my remaining material in next month’s magazine. This includes some greatcustom scenarios, along with battle reports. I also have a great custom battle report fromKrzysztof that I can’t wait to share with you.

This month was so busy because of Dust World Expo, of course. I have literallyhundreds of pictures that I have for the event and hours of great stories. Our group didthe 12 hour drive down to Dust World Expo on February 23rd and returned on February27th. There was no way I was putting all those experiences into a magazine in one day!

Dust World Expo was a great success. In my humble opinion, it was even better than lastyear, which says a lot. I won’t go into too much detail about the event in my editorial as Ihave several articles that cover the details of the event.

This month’s magazine will almost exclusively be dedicated to the event. Should youever have an opportunity to get to one of these Dust events, I highly encourage it. I wish Ihad the opportunity to include this kind of coverage in other events like England’s DustOff event, or the European Championships, or the Dust Nortic events.

I wanted to thank everybody I played with at Dust World Expo. I was surprised at theend of the event when my name was called for “Best Allied General” for OperationKondor. It was great fun receiving the award which hangs proudly in my home.

On another note, you may wonder what that model is on the cover of the magazine. That’s an unofficial model that Dust Monthly Magazine commissioned and massproduced as a special price at Dust World Expo. It is a model of Rick Ivansek, who hasorganized the event for years.

The Rick project was a huge success and I’d like to continuethe trend of doing unofficial models for the magazine in thefuture. If your interested in getting a Rick Ivansekminiature for yourself, contact us [email protected] or reach out at the forum. If Iget enough interest, we could do another run of the model.

I hope you enjoy the magazine.

I first met Rick Ivansek at Dust WorldExpo 2016. I’d heard of Rick from theDust facebook forums and knew that hewas a major contributor to the Dustuniverse. I also knew that he was key tosetting up the Dust World Expo Event.

I had shown up the day before the 2016Dust World Expo to help setup the event. Imet Rick and introduced myself. This wasmy first big Dust event so I met severalpeople that day, including the Dust StudioStaff.

After working setup for several hours, weall planned to go out for dinner afterward. We went to a local restaurant but was toldthat there would be over an hour wait.Everyone went outside to wait for ourtable. Being Irish, I immediately wentstraight into the bar and ordered a Guiness.Rick had similar thoughts and he and I had our first opportunity to talk.

Rick is a very approachable person and every easy to speak with. He’s very open andvery friendly. I asked Rick about the Dust World Expo and the work that he did. Hetold me about all the time, energy and personal finances that he has put into the event. Itwas significant. I asked him why he spent so much on the event. He told me that it was

something that he enjoyed puttingtogether. I was quite impressed.

Over the past few years, Rick haspersonally organized Dust WorldExpo. It has been held at theCommemorative Air Base in pastyears. This is not an easy venue tobook and often has to be donemonths, if not a year, in advance.

Rick has also organized and produced much of the costplay and props that are used at DustWorld Expo. These are not trivial. Check out some of the cosplay he organized inprevious years as well as this Mickey Turret he has in his back yard from a previous DustWorld Expo Events.

Months after Dust World Expo 2016, I would be speaking with Rick again about theupcoming rule book. As part of the magazine, I asked him some questions related to therules, the production of the book. Rick was very forthcoming with information andhelpful with my articles. When the first draft of the rule book dropped, Rick was all overthe facebook pages answering questions and responding to comments and criticisms.

Lastly, I was to deal with Rick again when I took over as editor of Dust MonthlyMagazine last summer. I had little experience with publishing and editing programs. Ireached out to Rick as I knew he was in the business of putting together publications likethe Dust rule book. I also wanted the magazine to mirror the look and feel of the rulebook to an extent.

Rick was very helpful in sending me detailed examples of work he had done for the rulebook. From a technical standpoing, the work that he did is amazing. What looks like asimple diagram in the rule book is actually a complex series of objects that can all beindividually positioned, sized, colored, etc. The quality and amount of work put into thatrule book can not be trivialized. It’s an amazing publication.

Fast forward to October 2016. I’m working on the magazine and I’m on one of my chatsessions with Joel Hillhouse. Joel and I chat frequently and he’s a major contributor tothe magazine not just in content, but in helping me with the overall strategy and directionof the magazine.

Joel and I were discussing an article I had recently done with Mariano Pagotti. Marianois a sculptor who had done some miniatures based on the movie “Kelly’s Heroes”.Gregory Withrow then did a series of cards to introduce these characters officially into theDust 47 Warfare universe. I had interviewed Mariano for the magazine a few monthsback and got alot of inside detail on how he produced his sculptures and how the modelswere eventually produced. I was excited about a month after the interview when apackage arrived at my door containing several of Mariano’s sculpts.

Joel and I were discussing making unofficial cards for Dust 1947 for Mariano’s sculpts. This was to be a part of a bigger project to start more unofficial cards, with models, forthe magazine.

We then discussed Dust World Expo 2017 and all the hard work Rick has done for theevent and for the rule book. We mentioned how Dust Studios had just announced aGregory Withrow hero that will be made available at Dust World Expo 2017. Wediscussed how great it was that they had honored Gregory that way. We started to askourselves what we could do to similarly thank Rick for all the hard work that he has donefor the Dust World Expo. Then a light went off!

One of the big events at Dust World Expo 2017 was going tobe Operation Kondor, an event put together by DDI 33’s ownPatrick Doty. This event was going to have a scenario called“Raid on Ivansek Airfield” in honor of Rick. Wouldn’t it becool if we had a Rick miniature that is the airbase commander? After all, we know a sculpter and we now know the processfor creating miniatures. What would it hurt to try?

I contacted Mariano and gave him the pitch for the projet. Hewas very excited about the idea. He knew Rick and all thehard work that Rick does and he thought it would be a great tribute. We quickly workedout terms and prices. Mariano then pointed me toward Gustavo Francavilla, who Marianoprimariy workes with to turn Mariano’s sculptures into mass produced metal miniatures.

Gustavo and I got in contact on facebook. Westarted a discussion about the project and he wasvery excited to work with Mariano again. Wequickly came to some cost and timelines toproduce fifty of the miniatures. The idea was toproduce these as a special miniatures for allattendees of Dust World Expo 2017. Everyonewas committed to make sure that this projectcould be done in time for the event.

Funding for the project was provided by Joel Hillhouse, myself and a few of the membersof DDI post 33: Patrick Doty and James Goldstein.

Everything was in place, let the project begin.

We formed a facebook chat group called “The Dust Magazine Thumbs Up Club” mainlybecause everytime I asked people for their opinions they all just gave me facebook thumbsup. We included many of the key contributors of Dust Monthly magazine along withmany people who knew Rick very well.

Our first objective was to determine what we wanted the model of Rick to look like.Should he be bare chested with .50 Cal machine guns in each hand? Should he have onefoot raised, Captain Morgan style, over a fallen axis zombie, while raising a sword to theheavens? After careful consideration, we decided with a more classic pose, similar toseveral pictures of Rick at DWE, would suffice.

This was to become our pose for the figure. It also helped define what the hero himselfwould do. Looking at Rick’s cosplay, he was clearly Army Air Corp. His hero would bein the Allies faction, would be an officer, and have some ability related to Army Air Corp.More on that hero later.

We sent the pictures to Mariano along with ageneeral description of how we wanted the figureto look. This included a description of height, weight, facial expression, etc. Mariano wouldclarify our instructions and often ask follow upquestions. For example, we had many pictures ofRick similar to the picture above. However, wehad no pictures of him from the back. Marianoneeded some idea of what the back of the coatwould look like. The Thumbs Up club discusseddifferent strategies to have Rick wear the coatand have someone sneaking around behind himtaking pictures. In the end, we settled on asimple picture of a similar coat from the internet. This worked.

Page 11: general rickdust-vikings.tk/forum/download/DustMonthlyMagazine7.pdfPatrick Doty. This event was going to have a scenario called “Raid on Ivansek Airfield” in honor of Rick. Wouldn’t

Within a few weeks, Mariano was producing his first pictures. These pictures werecirculated to the thumbs up club who were all very positive about the results. His firstpictures was the basic body. He put had placed a standard wargaming head on the modelso that we could see what it might look like once Rick’s head was done. We were allexcited. The project was off to a great start.

The next photos to appear were of Rick’s head. These were carefully scrutinized by theThumbs Up Club and some photoshopped pictures showing areas to be sliced were sentback and forth. Mariano was very responsive and made some minor changes to geteveryone happy with the face.

We were feeling pretty good about the project now, and things were moving quickly. Ourinitial conversations about the project were in October and November. It was Decemberand Mariano was making great progress. In a few more weeks, he had finished the jacketand the majority of the miniature.

By now it was January. The miniature was complete and it was up to Gustavo to make themolds and produce the metal miniatures. I had a slight panic attack when I discovered thatGustavo was going to be gone on vacation the first two weeks of January. However,Mariano got the original over to him quickly and Gustavo got right to work. He wasquickly sending me pictures of his work.

Did I mention that Mariano and Gustavo are both in Argentina? Gustavo finished hiswork quickly and had them sent to me in the first week of February. I received them abouta week later. It was funny to see a army of little Rick bodies and heads. I send about halfof the shipment over to Joel who was to paint up one for Rick for the event. Joel literallyworked all weekend, the weekend before the event to finish his painting. To my surprise,Joel painted three copies, one for Rick, one for Joel and one for me.

The hard work being finally done, the Thumbs Up Club started a discussion on what wewanted the hero to be like. We knew he was going to be an infantry one, and have asimple pistol, like many Dust officers. There was much discussion about his specialskills. We wanted to keep him a low cost, but wanted him to be unique.

After much discussion we decided, in keeping with the motif of the Army Air Corp, thatRick would have the Air Traffic Controller ability. This is the ability that reads “Unitselects and Aircraft in Line of Sight and on a result of <Faction> this selected AircraftActivates Again.” There were no hero units in the game (yet) that have this ability, so wethought it would be unique. We sized the hero at 7 points, based on heroes with similarskills.

TJ Van Der Werf was recruited to do the statistics and the background fluff for thecharacter. We wanted to create a unit card that matched the new official cards, so werecruited Umberto Bonomi, who did the photoshop on the card.

Now it was time for the Dust World Expo 2017 and presenting of the miniature. On thefirst day of the event, everyone was still getting setup and the official commencementspeech was about to happen. I discussed my plans with Victor Bugg, who was runningDWE, and we planned to have my presentation happen right before the official start of theevent.

I asked for everyone’s attentionand then began thepresentation. I discussed all thehard work that Rick had donefor the event and for the Dustcommunity in general. Imentioned how the magazinewanted to show appreciation toRick for all his hard work. Idiscussed how difficult it wasfor someone to find a gift for aman who had so much Dusttoys to begin with. I thenturned the presentation over toJoel who presented theminiature to Rick. TJ followedup after Joel to present theofficial miniature card and thebackground fluff story.

Overall, Rick was thrilled. Just the previous night, Rick had me over his house and wasshowing me his hobby room. In there, he had a German Tank Commander action heroand was pointing out how the action hero looked like him. I was biting my tongue, thinking what he might say when he sees a real miniature that IS him.

The overall project started it’s conception in October 2016 and completed in February2017. Overall, we had about a dozen people, from over a half dozen different countries, involved in the project. It was thrilling to see a project go from concept to delivery thisway.

We all hope Rick really likes his Hero. We all appreciate all the hard work and effort thatRick has put into DWE and the Dust community over the years and this is only a smalltoken of that appreciation.

From myself, thank you everyone who was involved with this project.

General Ivansek has distinguished himselfas one of the top generals of the Allied AirCorps. The General began his careerduring the First World War. Shortly afterarriving in France he began an Ace andwell-known squadron commander. Whatmade Ivansek even more notable was thathe preferred to fly a captured Pfalz D12rather than the Allied constructed aircraftavailable. After the Great War Ivansekbecame a staple of American air strategy, for years many joked that he “wrote thebook”.

Many of his outlandish tactics were toofar-fetched and it was only until theintroduction of the VK enhanced VTOLP-48’s that the Allies finally had the toolsnecessary to strike back at the Axis andSSU forces while always supporting theunits on the ground. General Ivansekalways believed that aircraft were neededin direct support of the troops. Regardlessof his rank and his affinity for his dressuniform, General Ivansek could often befound on the front lines acting as aForward Air Controller.

This past weekend was Dust World Expo 2017. I had previously attended DWE 2016and had such a great time that I knew I was going to have to go again in 2017. Thisyear’s event was no disappointment. We had a great turnout. We were at a fantasticsite. We played a great narrative event and a great tournament event. I had anopportunity to see friends from far away and an opportunity to make new friends. It wasa great time.

If you have never been to the Dust World Expo event, it’s more than just a single event. It’s more like a city wide community event that happens over several days. This year’sevent started with the 12 hour drive from Sacramento to Glendale, Arizona. Our groupfrom DDI post 33 in Sacramento consisted ofPatrick Doty, Michael Cafaratti, JamesGoldstein, and I. We were hauling quite a bit ofgear as we were taking most of the materialrequired for the Saturday narrative event.

After spending Thursday night recovering fromthe long drive, and playing a five hour game of“Forbidden Stars”, we hit the town to see thenew venue for the event. In previous years, theDust World Expo was held at theCommemorative Air Force Airbase in GlendaleArizona. There was a real thrill to be playing aWeird War 2 game alongside real World War 2warbirds.

This year, there were problems getting the event booked at the airbase. Just a fewmonths before the event, the venue was changed to be at the Imperial Outpost, the localgaming store in Glendale. I was originally skeptical about how this would work out. After all, being immersed in a World War 2 environment was part of the charm of DWE.However, the benefits ended up far exceeding the losses. The Imperial Outpost store hasa large gaming room which was reserved exclusively for our group. The store modifiedtheir normal hours, allowing us to get in early for setup and stay late. In previous years,we were rushed to close down the event on Sunday by the airbase staff. There was nosuch rush from the Imperial Outpost staff and most of us left on Sunday just fromexhaustion of playing long before the store started to close up for the day. The storeowner was very friendly and continued to cater to our every need. I was totally sold thatthe change in venue was for the better.

On Friday, I also had the opportunity to visit with Rick Ivansek at his home. Rick has aDust collection second to none. His collection, however, isn’t in volume, but in rarity.Rick has some very rare and one of a kind items in his collection. This included theoriginal Dust Strategy board game, as well as several Dust Action Figures. Rick also has agreat collection of strategy games in general and we had long discussions about AvalonHill games like Jutland, Bismark, and Squad Leader.

Later that night, many of us got together for dinner.I had a great opportunity to sit with Joel and havemany long conversations about the hobby, work, life and other topics. Joel and I speak frequentlyvia facebook and chat sessions. We collaboratealmost weekly on the magazine. It was good to beable to sit down with him and break bread. Whileat dinner, I also had the opportunity to speak withmany other members of the Dust community that Ihad not seen in a long time, such as GregoireBoisbelaud, Isaiah Burgess, TJ Van Der Werf,Victor Bugg, Crazy Jimmy, Gregory Withrow, and(of course) Paolo Parente.

Saturday started early with our group donning ourcosplay outfits for the event. We packed all the materialand headed over to Imperial Outpost which had openedearly for us. Most of all the attendees showed up earlyfor the event and everyone helped with setup, which wasquite extensive.

We began the opening ceremonies with recognition toRick Ivansek for his years of work on Dust World Expo. That’s when Joel, TJ and I presented Rick with hiscustom General Rick Ivansek miniature. Victor Buggthen started the main event opening ceremonies withintroductions and a description of the weekend’s events.Paolo Parente then gave a few words and we started upour first big event: Operation Kondor.

You can read more about Operation Kondor in anotherarticle later in the magazine. The activity wasoutstanding and everyone had a wonderful time. PatrickDoty had setup this event and he really did a fantasticjob.

By the end of Operation Kondor, we all had been playing Dust games for almost 10 hoursstraight. Everyone was exhausted. Our group invited all Dust attendees over to the housewe were renting for a BBQ that night. Several attendees, including Victor, Isaiah, Clyde,Rick, Gregorie and his wife Alecia, Greg Withrow, Paolo and his lovely wife Rochelle, joined us for Tri-Tip and libations.

During these festivities, we introduced the rest of our Dust friends to a true SacramentoCulinary Delicacy: Kit Kat bars dipped in spicy salsa. Umm-Ummm.

Sunday opened with TJ’s Dust 1947 Tournament. This was a great tournament and, although he had rules for both Grid and Gridless, we all agreed to play Grid so we hadmore of a mixture of players. In my first battle, I was stomped by Bob Pfeiffer and hisSSU. For my second battle, I had the opportunity to play against some guy named PaoloParent and his SSU Steel Guard. I think he said he painted his miniatures himself, but theylooked like they were premium. I had a great battle against Paolo and I barely squeekedout a victory (using the Gregory Withrow character) just as time was running out. Myfinal battle of the day was against Rick Ivansek. I had played Rick the day before duringOperation Kondor and had a great experience. Rick and I ran out of time for our battle andI won just based on points of units destroyed.

You can read more about the tournament from TJ’s article, later in the magazine. After the tournament ended, Paolo gave a presentation on upcoming releases from DustStudios. He also had a question and answer session. Everyone gathered around to watchthis presentation. If you ever needed a jolt to get you re-energized into this hobby, thishalf hour presentation was it. Prior to the presentation, many of us at DDI Post 33 weretalking about taking a few weeks away from Dust for awhile to play different games. After the presentation, we were all buzzing about new armies we would build and how wecould start right away.

There’s more about Paolo’s presentation in another article later in the magazine.

As the presentation ended, people started cleaning up from the event. We said ourgoodbyes to friends we have not seen since last year and to friends we just met. We lookforward to keeping in touch via facebook and the Dust Magazine forums.

And so Dust World Expo 2017 was put into the books. With the change in location, andall the changes in the game this past year, there was some question even among thestrongest of us fanboys as to how well the event would be received. However, everyoneagreed that DWE 2017 was a tremendous success. Everyone had a great time and we areall looking forward to getting together in the future for our next dust event.

So, for Dust World Expo 2017 somehow, I was tasked with creating the tournamentscenarios. I am pretty sure it’s because I complained about them the past 2 years, (but thereal reason will always be a mystery…).

I wanted to keep the focus of these scenarios on the experience that the players weregoing to have. The scenarios needed to be balanced, while having enough nuance thateveryone wasn’t simply playing 3 rounds of firefight. In the past, we have had scenarioswhere players are placed on the defensive and some of their forces are placed in reserve. Those can be fun scenarios, but nothing is worse than losing a tournament because youcouldn’t get your forces onto the board (it happened to me in 2015, but I am not stillbitter. I swear). Maintaining the balance between different, balanced, and some form of anarrative was hard, but the end result seemed to be a fun tournament for all.

In this photo, Paolo is acting confused when I told him that with his Red Guard Faction Bonus is forcestill had to be within 110 points (he was at 111).

It’s something to note that the gridded mats we used were custom printed for Expo in orderto fit the tables. That is why they are 8x12 squares rather than the 9x12 that the mats arenormally. The scenarios below have been edited a bit from Dust World Expo. The pointvalues of all the objectives has been increased a bit (they were really low originally) and afew rule clarifications have been made. This is open to the community to run wheneveryou would like. It will pair nicely with the new tournament packs that are availablethrough Dust-Models and DustUSA. I will also mention now that a someone mentioned tome that they will be using these scenarios at another upcoming tournament…

Operation Kondor is the brainchild of Patrick Doty. Patrick has literally been planningthis event for two years now and has put a great deal of time, effort and funds into theevent. He started at DWE 2016 by building several tables worth of custom terrain andmats. This terrain was used at DWE 2016 tournament event and was left with RickIvansek at the end of the event as Patrick knew he would need it for DWE 2017.

Patrick then planned out the rest of Operation Kondor, including the main games and theintermission games. He knew that many of the intermission games would requirespecific units, so he invested in these units himself and did custom painting on all ofthese units. These units would be provided to players on the day of DWE 2017,allowing players to play with units that they might not own.

Patrick planned out and play tested the main games and especially the intermissiongames, for which he devised some custom rules. Patrick and James Goldstein ran theevent on Saturday, electing to judge and facilitate, rather than participating themselves.

The narrative event was awesome. Attendees will remember this event fondly for years tocome. Patrick realized that it would be difficult to get everyone sitting at competitivetables at the same time. He therefore devised a strategy where half the attendees would beplaying competitively while the other half played the semi-competitive intermissionscenarios. Once an hour had expired, the competitive players would end their game andtake to the intermission scenarios, and visa versa. The competitive scenarios and theintermission scenarios were all interlocked. Results from one battle would have impact onsubsequent battles and overall tell the story of Operation Kondor. Additionally, thestoryline lent itself to certain objectives that Patrick identified. If the objectives werecompleted, the player would gain a “glory point”. The glory points were given via smallskull tokens that were stored on a lanyard that each player was given at the start of thetournament. The player with the most skull tokens and victories, would be given the titleof “best general”. Individual battle victories were also counted on this lanyard. Axisplayers who won would be given a grey bead, allies were given green and SSU were givenred.

The Operation Kondor event chronicles an Axis push through the desert of Iraq in anattempt to cut off and destroy the Allied army in the Middle East. While this operation isunder way, the SSU intervene in an attempt to make their own gains in the Middle East. The scenario is built to resemble the historical operation “Operation Market Garden”where allied paratroopers attempted to secure key bridges, which would allow the rapidadvance of Allied armor into Germany. InKondor, however, the key bridges are desertOasis.

The situation:

Axis forces are desperate to achieve abreakthrough towards final victory in Mesopota-mia. Towards this end the general staff has comeup with an audacious plan. By driving deep intothe desert they will outflank Allied positions, de-stroy them from the rear and claim the prize. Inorder to successfully outflank the enemy, Luft-waffe troops will launch air landings to capturethe few oasis deep in the desert and establish sup-ply bases. Then the Axis armored forces, led by

21st panzerlaufer kompanie and commanded byRommel will out flank and destroy the enemy.Barring any unforeseen circumstances this willensure victory in the Land of Two Rivers…

Operation Kondor is played through five scenarios:

1. The Axis attempts to capture several key Oasis by deploying light ground troops. The Oasis is similarly guarded by light ground troops.

2. The SSU, attempting to cause chaos, are raiding Ivansek airfield. Their plan is tosabotage the radar, aircraft, and anti-aircraft resources of the airbase, which willultimately benefit the coming Axis Air Invasion.

3. Having secured key Oasis locations, the Axis armor pushes into the desert. Alliedarmor moves to block their advance.

4. The Axis Air Assault begins. Large troop transports, loaded with Luftwaffe troops, are flying deep into the desert to drop reinforcements to the Axis vanguard. Alliedfighters from Ivansek airfield react. Will the troop transports make it through theallied fighters?

5. The Allies counter attack. They must take key objectives back from the Axis, whoare even now being reinforced by Luftwaffe Fallschirmjager troops.

I’ll recount the scenarios of Operation Kondor through my own personal experience.

Scenario 1: Take the Oasis!

The first scenario was a meeting of two forces with the objective of claiming the oasis inthe middle of the map. The winner would be the player that controls the Oasis at the endof turn 8, or at the end of the hour. The player with the most units touching the Oasis atthe end of the game would win a glory point.

For the first scenario, teams gain points for having platoons selected from the followinglist. Having a platoon from this list will give the player a glory point. Having a platoonfrom this list was not, however, required.

Axis

-100 points of Luftwaffe units and aircraft (no more than 50 points of aircraft)

Allied

-USMC Task Force Diver-USMC Rifle Platoon

SSU

-Spetsnaz Taskforce-Spetsnaz Battlegroup Roza Platoon

Mercenary-Sister Luisa’s Mercenary Platoon

As you can see, the idea was to approach the battle with light infantry platoons.

My opponent for the first scenario was none other than Rick Ivansek. Rick had abeautifully painted Axis force that consisted of two mortar units, a Konigsluther, acommand squad, two squads of recon infantry in hanomag transports, and a laser herman.Oh, the Konigsluther was piloted by Panzer Prinz. This didn’t match any of the platoonsbut, as mentioned, that wasn’t mandatory.

I was bringing in a USMC Rifle Platoon supported by a barking dog and a devastator. Ialso had two mortar units. I also added Chef for a nice surprise. Because I had a USMCRifle Platoon, I automatically gained one Glory Point.

Rick taught me a few lessons about smoke during that game. On turn one, he placedseveral smoke screens which prevented me from seeing much past the Oasis. I learned fastand used my own mortar units to do the same thing. By the end of turn one, the entire mapwas covered with smoke.

Rick advanced his two Hanomags to try to get in good position toward the Oasis.Unfortunately for him, the barking dog and the devastator were both able to thread thesmoke and get kill shots on the transports. Rick did not roll well for the transported reconsquad who were subsequently chewed up by the USMC squads.

Rick had the Konigsluther, with Panzer Prinz, advance into some woods overlooking theOasis. He was joined by the Axis command squad. I then dropped Chef into this party.Chef rolled some nice dice and eliminated all of the command squad except for theofficer. During the next turn, Chef activated again and took out the officer and did fourpoints of damage to the Konigsluther. Rick was forced to then react to Chef, preventinghis advance.

The Devistator advanced and was able to eliminate the Hermann. The Devistator and twoUSMC units were not occupying the Oasis.

As the hour was ending, Rick had the Konigsluther make a mad dash for the Oasis.Unfortunately, Panzer Prinz came up about two inches short. The Allies had the Oasisand I had three units occupying it, gaining the Glory Point.

Scenario 2: Raid on Ivansek Airfield

The Second Scenario was Raid on Ivansek Airfield. This is one of the intermission gameswhere Patrick really shined by providing custom rules and all the miniatures needed for thescenario. The situation was that two squads of SSU saboteurs, supported by two squads ofSSU killers, was raiding the airbase at night. Therefore, night rules applied and visibilitywas limited. The Airbase had three objectives that the SSU were trying to destroy: A radardish, an Allied Aircraft, and an Anti-Aircraft gun. Each objective destroyed would haveconsequences on Scenario 4, the air battle. There were also two huts on the map.

If the SSU successfully destroy the radar dish, then the Axis aircraft get one free move inthe air battle, to represent that the Allies are slow to react. If the SSU successfully destroythe aircraft, then that’s one less fighter that the Allies have in the air battle. If the SSUdestroy the Anti-Aircraft gun, then the air transports get to fly onto the map withoutground fire. (Should the SSU fail to destroy the Anti-Aircraft gun, then the Allied playerwill get one Wildfire Anti-Aircraft shot at each Air Transport on turn one).

Page 48: general rickdust-vikings.tk/forum/download/DustMonthlyMagazine7.pdfPatrick Doty. This event was going to have a scenario called “Raid on Ivansek Airfield” in honor of Rick. Wouldn’t

The scenario begins with the SSU player bringing in all four of his squads in the upperright hand corner of the map, closest to the radar dish. The Allied player has only twowar dog units on the map, located in the lower right hand corner of the map and the upperleft hand corner of the map.

The special rules for this scenario deal with sound. If the USMC ended their turn within12 inches of an SSU unit, they could do an action to generate a sound token. If any unitengaged in melee combat, it generated a sound token. Weapon fire generated two soundtokens. Destroying an objective also generated two sound tokens.

When sound tokens were generated, they were given to the Allied player who placedthem on one of the two huts. On the next turn, the Allied player can spend two of thosenoise tokens to spawn one USMC fire team from the hut where the two tokens areremoved.

In our play testing, this battle quickly goes south for the SSU. As more fire teams comeon the board, more shooting occurs, which generates more USMC fire teams. Eventuallythe SSU get wiped out. The question is just how many objectives they can eliminatebefore that happens.

My opponent for this scenario was Bryan Buchsdrucker. Brian was I had played againsteach other at DWE 2016 where we had a very enjoyable battle that Bryan eventually won.I’ve been waiting for a rematch ever since.

Bryan entered the map cautiously and started to surround the radar installation. I movedmy war dogs in early and had some good dice rolls to eliminate on of his Killer squads. Iwas then able to bring on a USMC fire squad who I raced toward the radar installation, hoping to prevent him from destroying it. Bryan, however, was able to get his sabotageroll and destroy the radar. He then wiped out my overanxious fire squad and one of thesquads of war dogs.

All those explosions and gunfire woke up two more fire squads, who flanked the fighteraircraft on the runway. An exchange of weapon fire wiped out one of his saboteur squads, but took out my last squad of war dogs. All that gunfire woke up two more fire teams.Realizing that he would soon be drowning in alerted Marine fire squads, Bryan made amad march move for the runway. However, he would come up about an inch short andwould be shot up by my fire squads. With his saboteurs gone, I won the match.

Overall results from second Scenario showed that almost all of the games resulted in theradar installation being destroyed. Only one aircraft was destroyed, however, and no anti-aircraft guns were destroyed. As a result, during the forth scenario, the Axis would get afree move, but still take anti-aircraft fire and face the full armada of Allied Fighters.

Scenario 3: Armored Battle

The third scenario was to represent the advance of the Axis armor across the pre-securedOasis path. The Allies are sending similar armor units to intercept this advance. Theplatoons that a player can select to get a glory point include:

Axis-Kampfgruppe Platoon-NDAK Panzergrenadier Platoon

Allied-Medium Walker Combat Platoon-Heavy Destroyer Platoon-USMC Heavy Assault Walker Platoon

SSU-KV-47 Wolfpack Platoon-Heavy Breakthrough Tank Platoon

Mercenary-Task Force Tanya

The objective of this scenario was the total elimination of the enemy force. Glory pointswent to either general that destroyed the opponent’s most expensive unit. For this scenar-io, I was playing against Heather Pfeiffer.

My choice in armies for this scenario was flawed, especially once I saw the board. Theboard was very open, with a few small rock formations that were fixed at 45 degree an-gles. There would be very little room to hide, even for infantry.

My force consisted of a Pounder (light) with two Cobras in a Medium Walker CombatPlatoon. I backed this up with several infantry units: two squads of Heavy Ranger AttackSquads, one Heavy Ranger Tank Hunter Squad and one Heavy Ranger Command Squad.I also added Bazooka Joe and Chef. I was hoping to have a board where I could advancethe Heavy Rangers under cover and eliminate any enemy infantry and close assault theenemy armor. Unfortunately, the map didn’t allow that.

Heather’s force was almost entirely armor. She had a Konigsluther with Panzer Prinz. She also had three ludwigs (one artillery) and a Heinrich. She had a command squad andtwo infantry squads. This gave her the Kampfgruppe Platoon advantage, giving her achance at the Fire and Move special rule.

Her heaviest vehicles was the Konigsluther. My heaviest was the cobra.

The battle started poorly for me from the start. She advanced an infantry squad which Iwiped off the table with my Heavy Ranger Attack Squad. Her walkers then appeared andpummeled my Attack squad, killing two troops. My Heavy Ranger Anti-Tank squad ad-vanced up the middle of the map, trying to use whatever cover was available. This wasinadequate as Heather’s Heinrich and artillery walker blew them off the table. My secondAttack Squad was similarly pummeled on the right flank of the table by Heather’s Lud-wigs. My Cobras and pounder proceeded to enter the battle and hit NOTHING. Heatherthen brought in the Konigsluther piloted by Panzer Prinz. Panzer Prinz got his third acti-vation and entered the board and sustained fire on my cobra. Two hits. Either would killthe Cobra. However, I had cover. Both of us laughed out loud when I rolled two factionsymbols, saving the Cobra. As my last activation, I dropped Chef on top of her Konigslu-ther. Chef attacked doing four points of damage, but the thick armored Konigsluther hadsix points left.

The next turn, Heather continued to eliminate my forces. Her command squad took outChef as my Cobras and Pounder continued to miss sustained fire rolls. As I was missingall my attack rolls, Heather was busy taking out the last of my infantry and one of my Co-bras. I had yet to take out even one of her walkers.

I realized that the game was lost, but I wanted that Glory point to take out her Konigslu-ther. I continued to try to reactivate the Cobra. I failed with my Ranger Heavy CommandSquad. However, Bazooka Joe was later able to reactivate the Cobra, who took the shot onthe Konigsluther and hit for six points, just enough to take out the big walker!

At that point, defeat was certain and I conceded the game to Heather. She took the victorypoint but we both took Glory points for taking out the largest enemy unit. We each tookGlory Points for having the right platoons.

Scenario 4: The Air Battle!

During the forth scenario, the Axis are sending Air Transports loaded with Luftwaffetroops to reinforce the Axis Vanguard. The Air battle will determine if those reinforce-ments arrive in time.

This battle was previously documented in a prior version of Dust Monthly Magazine.During this particular Scenario, we had too many players. Since I had test played the sce-nario prior to DWE, I stepped out, allowing other players to have the experience.

The game had six players. Each playercontrolled a squadron of fighters. Al-lies squadrons are four fighters. Axissquadrons consist of three fighters. There are also three air transportswhich are not controlled by the play-ers. Each turn these three air trans-ports (which have 20 hit points) willmove forward 18 inches. The Alliesare attempting to shoot down these airtransports before they make it off thefar table edge. The table was setupwith four 6X4 mats in a rectangularpattern, so the Air Transports wouldhave to travel 12 feet to make it off themap.

The Allied fighters were shooting withsix .50 cal machine guns. The Axisfighters are the Adler variants whichhave the X-4 Missiles. The X-4 mis-siles get sustained attack if the Axisfighter doesn’t use their quad autocan-nons that turn. If the X-4 missile hitsan Allied fighter, it’s an instant kill.

The Air Battle started with both forces rapidly closing on each other. Fighters shot atfighters. While the Allies did some damage to the Adler fighters, the X-4 missiles quick-ly took down scores of red tailed fighters. While the fighters dueled in the skies, the AirTransports continued to drone across the table.

Eventually, the Adler’s supplies of X-4 missiles were exhausted and the Allies superiorguns started to even the odds. Adler jet fighters dropped from the skies on long plumes ofsmoke. (IE: James taking the model off the table and flying it to the supply table whilemaking a dragged out “EEEEEeeeeeee” sound)

However, by this time the Air Transports had too much lead on the Allied fighters. TheAllied Fighters took a few shots at the Transports but were still dogged by the Adler es-corts. The battle would end with all three Air Transports successfully making it off thetable.

Scenario 5: Allied Counter Attack

This scenario represented the Allies counter attacking the Axis forces and attempting toretake lost territory. The players would roll for initiative, the winner picking to be attack-er or defender. The defender would have only 75% of their force available.

Platoons for this Scenario included:

Axis-NDAK Christoph Platoon-NDAK Grenadier Platoon-Bleutkreuz Kampfgruppe Von Stein’s Platoon

Allied-Ranger Platoon-Taskforce Rhino-Heavy Commando Paratrooper Platoon

SSU-Koshkas SMERSH KV-47 Platoon-Steel Guard Platoon

Mercenary-Sister Luisa’s Mercenary platoon-Task Force Tanya

For this battle, I took a Ranger Platoon, along with Rhino and two squads of Hammers,Sargent Victory, Bazooka Joe, Chef, and a Storm Aircraft.

My opponent was Bryan Buchsdrucker. Brian and I had played a great game at DWE2016 where he beat me by a nose. This was going to be our big rematch. Brian broughton an SSU army that contained a Laventiy heavy tank, with Nikolai as pilot. He also hadGuai Lo attached to a fire support squad. He had a steel guard command squad, a secondinfantry 2 command squad, and a mercenary support weapon.

Bryan’s SSU was defending a small village which contained a house, some walls, and awell. My objective was to capture the well after turn 3.

As I advanced my Ranger Platoon, my Hammers and Captain Victory, Bryan took to theoffensive by bringing Guai-Lo and his squad forward to meet me head on. The rest of hisunits kept their heads down defending the building and getting shot up by my aircraft, which killed his infantry 2 command squad. I threw most of my Ranger Platoon at Guai-lowhile attempting to move the hammers and Captain Victory around on a right flank move.

Unfortunately, that’s when Bryan got reinforcements. The Axis Air Transports from Sce-nario 4 buzzed overhead and dropped a squad of Luftwaffe Fallschirmjagger units, right inthe woods ahead of my hammers. They then proceeded to take out Rhino and his squad ofHammers. While the second squad, and Captain Victory, stopped to finish off theFallschirmjagger squad, Guai-Lo continued to tie up my Ranger Platoon. His troops de-fending the house then managed to shoot down my aircraft.

(Chef never got his activation roll and never entered the battle at all.)

With time running out, Captain Victory, the Hammers and some of my Ranger Platooncharged on the well. The Hammers were gunned down by Bryan’s Steel Guard commandsquad. Captain Victory took out the mercenary support weapon and attacked the Laventiy, but was unable to get past it. As time expired on our game, Bryan took one last shot atSargent Victory, killing him and seeing him fail his cheat death roll.

Bryan’s SSU had successfully defended the well.

Overall results were accumulated from all the games that were played. Patrick added upall of the green, grey and red beads to identify the final victor of Kondor. The skull beadson each lanyard were then added up to identify which player for each faction had the most“glory points” and achieve the Best General awards.

Overall, SSU won Operation Kondor with most victories. I was surprised when awardswere presented that I had won best Allied General. Having painted armies and focusingon the special key objectives of a battle helped me get the needed Glory Points. The over-all awards were:

Best SSU General---Bryan BuchsdruckerCalgary, Alberta, Canada

Best Axis General--Heather PfeifferPhoenix, Arizona

Best Allies General--Joe McLauglinSacramento, California

Sucks to Be you award--Crazy JimmyTucson, Arizona

The Operation Kondor event was a huge success. Everyone had a wonderful time andwill be remembering the good times for years to come. I think we all want to express ourspecial thanks to Patrick Doty who put so much effort into this project. Not only did heconceive the story and scenarios, but he acquired and painted up models specific to theevent. He created special rules and play tested his scenarios. He created a point systemwith the lanyards and purchased all the supplies to implement it. What an awesome joband we all appreciate your hard work, Patrick!!!

This is like one of those puzzle games where you have to locate all the hidden items.

Can you find the:

● 8 machine guns?

● 4 Phasers

● Cannon in the nose

● And what are those things above the phasers? More Machine guns?

Transformer - from Heinrich to Luftwaffe WalkersLuft Hans / Luft Horst

Dear Friends,

Our great creator Paolo Parente and his Dust Studio gave me opportunity to haveearlier dedicated prototype parts of Light Airborne Axis Walker and special resin pilotfor Axis Walkers. I wondered how to find walker for conversion. Warfactory.pldelivered my Tropical Heinrich.

After few months, with some obstacles and interruptions, I have finalized this fantasticproject. I would like to share with you, as the first viewer, effect of my work. I haveprepared two version Luft Hans and Luft Horst.

Thank you very much Paolo and Marek for your support to this project andopportunity to create this model. I will published more about Luft Hans/ Luft Horstproject on my blog www.dustbrothers.pl soon.
