Check-Control Hidden Menus-what it can tell you, but doesnt

    Nr. 001-200917.05.2009 01:08, Seite 1 von 3

The check control module of the BMW 5 and 7 Series contains substantial information, which can be accessed by activating the hidden menus. The information contained in thesehidden menus can be quite useful, and in some cases, even indispensable. For instance, should any work be required to the instrument panel that involves the disassembly of thetachometer pointer, the recalibration of the tachometer after reassembly can often be tricky.By accessing the hidden menus, the tachometer can be recalibrated with greater ease andaccuracy. Unlocking the hidden menus also allows the actual driving speed or the level ofremaining fuel on each of the two petrol tanks to be digitally displayed.

    Unlocking the Hidden Menus

To unlock the hidden menus, follow the procedures outlined below in strict sequence:1. Turn ignition switch on (Stage 2).2. Press and hold the right button (Check Control) of the instrument panel.

Initially, the instrument panel will display "Check Control OK" , but after approximately10 seconds the display will change to "Test Nr.01" .

    3. Release the right button (Check Control) and press the left button. The chassisnumber should now appear. Calculate the checksum by adding the five digits of thechassis number, ignoring the letters. For example, the checksum of DG12345 is 15,being 1 + 2+ 3 + 4 + 5.

    4. Press the right button repeatedly to scroll through a list of menu items until you seeTest Nr.19.

    5. Now press the left button until the number displayed equals the checksum you havepreviously calculated.

    6. Finally, press the right button to unlock the hidden menus. The process of unlockingthe hidden menus does not have to be repeated unless they are deactivated by aBMW technician while the car is being serviced.

An error is made if Test 03 - 21 only Lock: ON is displayed . In this case, repeat steps 1 6above. Otherwise, access to tests 03 to 21 is now possible.

Navigating through the menus and submenus

Press the left button in quick succession to scroll through the main menu items at theX level.

Once the desired menu item is reached, stop and wait for a few seconds while the

computer jumps into the sub-menu at the X.1 level. Again, press the left button in quick succession to scroll through the sub-menu items

at this X.1 level. To jump up back to the main menu level, press and hold the left button for

approximately 3 seconds. Please note that variations to the navigation procedure described above may be possiblewith different car models.

Listing of the tests:(Due to of different software versions, there might be slight variations to what is displayed.)

TV Unblocking(Not permitted in many countr ies)

    Nr. 003-200917.05.2009 01:19, Seite 1 von 2

ATTENTION: Watching the TV while the car is in motion is illegal in some countries

    1. Determine which navigation computer is blocked. There have been four different navigation computers for BMW vehicles since theywere introduced. To find out which system you have:Enter Settings from the main menu and select menu settings. At the upper-righthand side of the screen, note the code that resembles the following format: 1-1/72The breakdown of the code is as follows:1 = Navigation computer (1=MK1, 2=MK2, 3=MK3, 4=MK4)1 = Display (1=Professional Navigation with colour-display, 2=monochrome Arrow navigation)72 = Software version of the navigation computer. The above example is thus a MK1 with colour display with software version number 72 (=8.0).The MK4 is recognisable by the DVD Logo on the computer.

Software version: MK1=72 (corresponds to Version 8.0)MK2=81MK3=63 (with Split screen Function)MK4=80

To unblock the TV:For MK1: go to point 2.

For MK2 built before year 9/99: go to point 3.

    For MK2 built after 9/99 or a MK3 or a MK4: go to point 4.

If you have a MK4 (7er E65): Sorry, it is not possible to unblock the TV without softwarereprogramming. There is also no hardware solution, so you shouldnt buy any special offerfrom a tuner they only want your money.

    2. Unblocking the MK1- Turn the ignition to position 2 (the last position before starting the engine)- Enter TV mode- Enter Settings- Enter Contrast. When the green contrast bar is visible, push the knob and keep it

pressed.- Turn off ignition while still keeping the knob pressed. Wait for 8 to 10 seconds(timing must be accurate!)- Release the knob- Turn on the ignition again

Now the TV will operate while the car is in motion.

ATTENTION: It can take several attempts until the timing is exactly within theacceptable 8 10 second range.

To unblock the videotext, follow the same procedure, but select brightness insteadof contrast.

    3. Unblocking the MK2 built before 9/99

To unblock the MK2 TV, follow the same procedure above, but select brightnessinstead of contrast.

To unblock the videotext, follow the same procedure, but this time select colour.

ATTENTION: It can take several attempts until the timing is exactly within theacceptable 8 10 second range. Furthermore, the two menu options for unblockingthe TV and VT are sometimes interchanged: Simply try out both.

    ***TV unblocking doesnt work ***

To check whether it is at all possible to manually unblock the TV, when the car is inmotion and a black screen is displayed, then it is possible to manually unblock theTV. However, if a blue screen appears (for units made after 10/99), then it is notpossible to manually unblock the TV.

    4. Unblocking the MK2 after 9/99, MK3 and MK4There are no manual procedures that will work for these navigation systems.

Unblocking the TV for vehicles with video modules built after 9/99 can only be doneby reprogramming the software in the video module directly using a PC.

There are websites for service providers who can do this for a considerable sum.

A few notes about unblocking:Usually, there should be no need to repeat the procedure once it has taken effect, exceptperhaps if and when a BMW technician resets the module while the car is being serviced. Inthis case, simply repeat the procedure that has previously worked. There is no need to buy aspecial module so that the TV works while the car is in motion. It is considerably cheaper tohave the software reprogrammed..

The procedure for manually unblocking works because the software of the module allows itso. There may be instances, however rare, that when the software in the module is updatedfor whatever reason, the facility for manually unblocking is also removed.

Watching TV while driving is ill egal in some countri es. The risk of an accidentand of passengers being hurt i ncreases when the driver is d istracted and not

paying due attention to the road. So please note perform these procedures atyour own r isk and drive responsibly at all times. No liability i s accepted and

Tank functionDescription of the tank func tion

    Nr. 004-200917.05.2009 01:19, Seite 1 von 1

The tank is split and is on the left and on the right from the Propelling tank tunnel(transmission tunnel) under the rear seat.On the right-hand side of the tank sits a fuel tank sending unit with a In-tank pump, which iselectrically operated. On the left-hand side there is a fuel tank sending unit with suction jetpumps. The fuel tank sending units are thus one behind the other, in a row. That means thevalues of the two sending units are added to determine the total fuel level (see tip 001 tank gaugein the display of the tacho instruments) .

Assuming the left tank has a value of 100 ohms and the right tank has a value of 120 ohms, then the sum of 220 ohms is stored at the IKE controller, the combination instrument. Here, the value is converted into litres.

When both tanks are empty, the right tank is filled first when refuelling. When a thresholdpoint is reached, the overflow then spills into the left tank. While the engine is running, thefuel pump on the right side carries the fuel to the engine.

Diesel-engine vehicles: The fuel goes through in-line pump, sits under the vehicle just belowthe driver's seat. This increases the pressure to approx. 4 bar. From there, it goes to thehigh-pressure pump. Here, high pressure is produced, which, depending upon loadcondition of the engine, could be between 500 and 1300 bar. The displaced, excess fuelover a left side of the fuel radiator in the engine compartment is then returned into the lefttank. Here, the suction jet pump creates negative pressure causing the fuel in the left tank tobe drawn to the right tank. The suction jet pump is not powered electrically, the flow iscaused by the physical effect wherein the narrowing of the pipe and the subsequent negativepressure creates a suction or siphoning effect.

Through the series connection of the senders, the exact amount of fuel in the individual tankhalves is not accurately represented in the fuel gauge on the instrument panel.

This is quite often reported with cracked tanks and predominantly with the E38-models (ithappened to me twice with 2 different E38s with 2 different engines and without any message about a failure oranything else also no stored failure in the memory of the car. The valves the release pressure from the Tankdidnt work).

Through a number of isolated cases, I observed that this is a frequent and well-knownproblem. There had been incidents when the fuel consumption being reported was anastonishing 2.5l/100km for the V8 and little aspirating noise when opening the tank lid can beheard (this is particularly noticeable during long drives involving several stops to top-up the petrol tank. After thesecond or third time, one will notice a noise while opening the tank and unusually low fuel consumption. Whenthis happens, inform your BMW dealer and let them inspect the tank before it gets damaged.) .

    Doors seal Nr. 006-200917.05.2009 01:20, Seite 1 von 5

After a car wash or after extremely strong rain, water often leaks to the entrance borders oreven on the floor space creating a small, but distinctive puddle.

The gluing of the door foil under the door panel is leaking and must be re-sealed again withButyl-cord from Teroson.

This is what you need:Butyl-cord from your BMW dealer (you may have to order):Part number: 83 19 000 05 37 price ca. 32The Butyl-cord is 6mm wide and 20m long, and should be enough for all doors. It is probablynot possible to order a smaller quantity.

Procedure:Dismantle the door panel: see instructions below! Loosen (warm up using a hair dryer) and then completely remove the old Butylschnur filmand then reseal again.

    Door Panels explained:

The door panel at the front and back can be dismantled in a similar manner.Ignore step 1 for the rear door panels, everything else remains the same.

There is no need to worry about the door panels with side airbags. The side airbag isfastened NOT to the panel, but to the door under the panel, thus no need to stress!

Step 1: To begin, loosen the Phillips screw in the ventilation shaft.

Pixel error with instrument combination(also the Tacho foil or using Tacho changes struggles )

    Nr. 007-200917.05.2009 01:20, Seite 1 von 14

Take care while handling at the instrument cluster, it can be irreparably damaged. But with alittle luck, it can work like new again.

Loosen the 2 screws on the upper side of the instrument cluster and lift it from the instrumentpanel. The steering wheel must adjusted so it is out of the way. Unplug the few cables andthe cluster comes off easily. Use a flat, even sheet of paper as work surface, so all piecesand parts are disassembled are visible.

    Note: Torx screwdrivers are required!

The instrument needles are connected with the axle of the spindle motor and must be takenoff. With a small pointy pliers, the axles of the needles should be held in each case, otherwise the motor of the needles will be damaged. No strength is required on the axles, you need a little intuitive feeling.

In the last pictures, note how pressure is applied against the orange rubber, which supportsthe contact with the conductive strip and the LCD glass. Weak pressure brought about byage or simple deterioration of this rubber is the main reason for the pixel errors. It no longerpresses firmly enough against the conductive strip and the pixels fail. Here, apply anadditional wedge or something between them to increase pressure on these parts. A thinpiece cardboard or a flat piece plastic work well in fixing it perhaps even permanently.

Again:Exercise care when taking off the needles (they are set quite firmly) and avoid slipping whenpulling them out. Use a pair of pointy pliers to grasp the shaft while twisting the needle out.It is important that the springs are held in place to make it easier to adjust the needles later. It is quite possible the needles wont be zeroed after reassembly, and they must berecalibrated again using the hidden menu (see tip 001) .If you know the structure of the instrument panel, including the shaft and springs and havethe appropriate tool, to pull the needles will be no problem. Nothing can be damaged whenreassembling the needles and the needles can easily be zeroed and recalibrated (see 001).Zeroing the needles normally cannot damage the instrumentation panel.

If in doubt, simply try and practice the procedure with a used instrument cluster (second handunits are available from 15 euro from a used-dealer or on the Internet) .It is not possible to install a used instrument cluster in your car!! Your instrument cluster isspecifically coded to your car. A used instrument cluster will not work!

The following pic tures are to illu strate the proceeding (37 pics !)First of all, the fundamental defect, which is also likely to occur with the climate control panel,is in reality not a defect of the display - it is merely a weakness in the contact points.

A few basics to describe the problem: Most displays are LCDs (liquid crystal display), Ifpressure is applied to an area of the LCD, this area becomes translucent. The other arearemains dark or black. Depending upon the arrangement and partitioning of these areas, it ispossible to show individual areas, figures, numbers or anything else which should berepresented the LCD must be illuminated from behind.Such displays can be found in radios, clocks, flat screens and in BMWs. The large numberof small pixels arranged into a matrix provide BMW instruments with fine resolution, thusallowing the representation of both numbers and letters.

Since these liquid displays are very sensitive, they are usually never firmly connected withthe housing or other construction units. To apply pressure to this display at the contacts forthe individual display areas, simply do as follows: The contacts are at a lower corner of theTransfer to third parties, even in part, is prohibited!

display and sits quite thinly on the vapour-deposited glass layer. The line between thesecontacts and the control board, which steer/under tension set the area, serves a kind flexiblerubber plate, which can lead the river per individual range independently. Often yourecognise this as a white side coating. The orange plastic foil is on the on-board computerbetween the LCD and the pear and provides the colour by which we see the numbers fromthe front. The rubber plate is normally not firmly attached to the display, it sticks onlybecause of the accumulated humidity on the LCD. This is the main problem. In time andparticularly during cold weather, individual pixels and even whole lines on the display fail orbecome darker. Due to humidity and pollution going through the contact points, the rubberplates and the sides of the LCD, contact is partially lost. That means if contact is restored, everything will function perfectly again and without limitations! In principle, its as if it wasnever defective! And precisely in this manner, all kinds of displays can be repaired! Simplyclean and restore these contact points: the 2 opposite and edges of the rubber plate restingagainst the contacts and the vapour-deposited contacts on the LCD and/or the solderedcontacts on the plate. Exercise caution, however. On some on board computers, the rubberplate cannot be separated from the display! Please examine patiently.

If the separation is not possible, then other people recommend contact spray! But here thereis the risk that the vapour-deposited and hardly visible contacts will be damaged and wipedoff and so the function cant be fixed, you will need to buy a new one!!! In addition, theprobability exists that the error will recur. Contact sprays are only a short-term solution to theproblem and brings substantial risk of an unwanted side effects. If you absolutely must usecontact sprays, then never use a corrosive or solving cleaning agent. Strong cleaners orsprays dissolve the contacts.

    Line In / Aux for Navi-computer Nr. 008-200917.05.2009 01:21, Seite 1 von 1

With this LINE in method, the Tape deck signal coming from the on-board monitor isinterrupted on its way to the rear on-board monitor radio. The Aux signals are inserted in itsplace.

One can solder the cables either in front, behind the on-board monitor, or at the back of theradio. See the wire allocation below.

    NOTE:

Avoid using the tape deck and the Aux in at the same time. This may lead to signal distortionand may damage the equipment - so please do not run parallel signals.

The new aux-in cable can be connected to the cable-ends in the front of the wiring harnessor soldered at the rear of the radio plug where might be easier.

    The allocation looks as follows:

right yellow/black Tape right +yellow/brown Tape right -

left blue/black Tape left +blue/brown Tape left -

    ___________________________________________________________________

There are three other alternative methods.

First, use a cassette adapter, which is slid into the Tape deck. This is available for ahandful of dollars.

Second, use an FM transmitter where the signal is transmitted and received by thecar radio over a specific frequency. This solution is very flexible and can be easilyintegrated. It is, above all, also very economical (around the 25 ).

The last and probably most elegant solution is to use the correct Aux input found onthe TV tuner in the rear centre console under the seats. One can purchase a plugand cable to connect to this Aux input, or one can build the cable himself. I know theconnections, so please let me know if you would like to receive the information.

So there we have a solution for everyone.

Car & Key MemoryFunctions and settings

    Nr. 009-200917.05.2009 01:21, Seite 1 von 10

Valid for models E38 and E39 manufactu red after 09/98 (and all E46, E52, E53 models)

What exactly do Car Memory and Key Memory mean:

"Car Memory"Car memory is where the settings that relate to the vehicle are stored. These settings areindependent of the key used and apply to unlocking the vehicle remotely or manually through the doorlocks.

Various car settings can be programmed into the MEMORY, e.g. the automatic activation of theheadlight low beam when starting or turning on the headlights after locking the vehicle (Follow MEHome function).

Key Memory Key memory is where the settings relating a specific remote control are stored.(Note: These settings are not stored in the actual remote control. The particular remote control isidentified by the central locking system when it is deactivated remotely. The identification is passedon over the bus systems to the electronic controllers in the vehicle, therefore allowing specific settingsto be activated.)

Thus, it is possible for the driver to find his seat has automatically shifted to his or her personal setting,or the climate control settings changed to his or her personal preference. For technical reasons, thekey MEMORY function of the E38 and E39 can only accommodate two remote controls. The E46,E52 and E53 can accommodate four remote controls. Each driver is recognised on the basis ofhis/her own remote control - a really beautiful thing, if you use one.

An overview of the possible settings are as follows:

    1 Car Memory 1.1 theft safety device / alarm system1.2 central locking system1.3 windows and sunroof1.4 lighting1.5 windshield wiper1.6 speed control1.7 audible alarms1.8 heating/climate/ventilation1.9 seat-mirror memory1.10 announcements/language1.11 audio/video

    1.12 park distance control

    2 Key Memory 2.1 central locking system2.2 heating/climate/ventilation

Please note that there are country-specific differences in which settings can be adjusted due to legaland local regulations. Vehicles with same equipment, but coming from different countries may havedifferent adjustment settings. Beyond that, market-specific requirements of the insurance and thelegislator may also influence which settings can be adjusted.

Cooling-system Air ing i t out the right way!

    Nr. 011-200917.05.2009 01:22, Seite 1 von 1

ATTENTION:Vehicles with residual heat storage must be aired out and the vehicle must be connected to the DIS.This can be done by your BMW dealer. While the system is aired out, special Valves and the make-up water pump are required withoutthese, the system cannot be aired out.

    Procedure:

    1. While the radiator is cool after working on the system, loosen but do not completelyremove the radiator cap. Prevent the excessive leakage of the cooling agent from theheader tank.

    2. Start the engine.3. Set the heating to maximum temperature.4. Set the fan speed to low. Thus the heating valves are opened and the make-up water

pump is running.5. With the engine running, give the accelerator three to four quick stabs so the engine

revs to approx 4500 5000 rpm to flush the engine cooling circuit.6. Do not leave the engine running longer than approx. 30 seconds, so that the cooling

agent does not warm up and expand.7. If the coolant level drops, then fill the radiator up to the maximum level.8. Leave the cap on, start the engine and warm it up until the thermostat opens.9. Control the coolant level, ensuring that the system stays cool - the system works with

positive pressure (!), thus the boiling point can be advanced to 120 oC, whichpositively affects the engine characteristic. Thus have faith and be careful.

Also consider the different remarks of the header tank:

Transparent header tank:Exercise caution when checking the coolant level and ensure the system is no longerhot. Removing the radiator cap while the radiator is very hot releases hot steam athigh pressure and may lead to injury. The coolant temperature must not exceed30C. If it goes over 30C, then let the engine cool to the ambient temperature, and ifnecessary, fill up the cooling agent up to the maximum level and monitor the coolantlevel ( see marking at the header tank ).Note: The container marking indicates the level of liquid with approx. 20C.

Black header tank:Exercise caution when checking the coolant level and ensure the system is no longerhot. Removing the radiator cap while the radiator is very hot releases hot steam athigh pressure and may lead to injury. The coolant temperature must not exceed30C. If it goes over 30C, then let the engine cool to the ambient temperature, and ifnecessary, fill up the cooling agent up to the maximum level and monitor the coolantlevel ( the ball at the float needle is in one level with the upper edge of the header tank ).Note: The container marking indicates the level of liquid with approx. 20C.

Rear view cameraInstalling in a E39 Touring

    Nr. 013-200917.05.2009 01:23, Seite 1 von 3

If you have an E39 Touring without PDC, it may be an alternative to install a rear viewcamera system for the same or lower costs.

What you need:Rear view cameraControllerCables for the systemtracer for boot2 Mounting plates (for several BMW-series)

The only problem is that there is no special mounting plate for the E39, but the systemincludes 2 plates for other models (may be X5). You have to rework the mounting plate forthe camera and the tracer for the E39. Not much joy, but possible. NOTE: both of the plates

cannot be ordered separately. These part are not listed separately in the catalogue, soplease handle with care while working on it.Building a plate from scratch is quite difficult, so refitting an existing plate should be theeasier way.

Tip:These instructions are aimed towards beginners only. The fundamental execution of theinstallation is in the BMWinstallation instructions, included with the system purchased.

Akternatively, they may be available from your dealer.Further down, there is information how to fix the problem while activating the NTSC-Videoexitadded.The instructions only describes the installation of the camera in a vehicle, which includes theTV-function (by the factory). The description refers up to the model E39 Touring, but can may apply (not the mechanicalworks) to other models.

    Installation:

The installation itself may be quite simple for the E39 Touring. The lining of the boot can be loosened easily (after the removal of the tool kit) with 8 screwsdirectly at the lining and 2 screws under the cover of the closing mechanism of thewindowpane. The cover of this closing mechanism is only fixed with plastic noses in metalstaples and can be loosened carefully. The lining of the boot also has 2 plastic clips positioned right and left on the outside (like in thelinings from the doors) , they can be loosened more easily by a quick jerk.

Also you can lever off the lowest putting nose from both lateral inside panels of the boot, thiswill help in taking off the loosened lining. But there is no need to do this. If you will install itagain, you should do this!

In order to shift the set of cables to the roof range, the outside lining must only be removedon the left side of the boot. This is as it were fastened with three plastic clips (recognisablefrom the outside as square cap).Either be very careful when loosening these parts, or just buy these three small articles forvery little money from the dealer. The parts break off easily, since the metal staples holdingthese peg-like clips are quite robust.(German Part-nr. clasp left side (black): 51 49 8 217 213, price only 0,75 - so get them before!!)

Note: 1 Use a broad screwdriver when levering off these plastic parts.

2 Remove the side panels after taking the rubber coating of the lower visible screw (rubberstop of the windowpane).3 On the left hit a corner the boot is a cable entry. Here the set of cables for the rear viewcamera is to be fitted. However, ensure that the execution of the sealing is absolutely clean,so that no humidity can penetrate into the boot.4 For such sealing, welding repair volume made of rubber is suitable far better than anyinsulating tapes.5 For execution to the roof range, use levers to loosen the outermost left rest nose of theupper cover. With opened windowpane, the two screws of the cover of the cable entrybeside the hinge cover can be loosened with a Torx screwdriver. The cable entry is mountedtogether/connected by clips still at a page and can be removed completely. From there, pullout a cable hose from grooved rubber leads into the roof range.6 Now, remove first the cover of the left roof loudspeaker (on the right of and held on the leftof likewise with plastic noses been in the well-known metal staples and in front and in theback with noses easily under the roof sky). Carefully take off the four screws of theloudspeaker and the two leads (if necessary with pointed pliers), in order not to damage thewall plugs. After removal of the loudspeaker the cable entry of the above mentioned grooved

cable hose can be seen. Here one now finds two such hoses, check carefully to recognisewhich is the correct one.7 Begin to easily cut the correct hose in the car interior (thus loudspeaker cutout and cablesnot damaged!) and push the tension spring or a like from the inside to the outside. Thecables of the rear view camera can then be easily moved into the car interior.8 Here, the tension against the back-up lights can be reduced through the loudspeakercutout. As a result, the controller for the RFK and thus the RFK is activated. Seal the holeafter feeding the cable through front end.

9 From the loudspeaker cutout, the transfer of the cables takes place first again to the rear tothe body edge, where there is an oval, unused cable entry. Here, and then to the left vehicleside, lead the wiring harness under the sky roof (fasten with adhesive strips).

10 The sky roof must be solved for this in the rear range. It is here fastened to
