In the initial years, we focused on organizing multiple health camps in diverse locations in Delhi where the vulnerable and underserved communities living in slums were provided free diagnosis and treatment. A senior team of doctors and health experts belonging to esteemed hospitals and institutions actively worked with us in all the interventions.

From 1998 to 2000, we focused on conducting general health awareness camps.

1999 Orissa Super Cyclone, Jagatsinghpur, Paradeep, Sukarya reached out in a small way towards the cyclone affected victims of Orissa by providing them with medical supplies, water purification kits, food and clothes.

Gujarat Earthquake, 2001Sukarya undertook relief work towards helping the victims of the catastrophic Gujarat earthquake, 2001. We identified villages that had been left unattended despite the presence of many national and international organizations. Khodu village of Surinder Nagar district was one such place. We assisted in the functioning of the primary and secondary school by providing tents for classrooms and administrative work.

Multi Specialty Treatment Camp Kanhai Village, 10 December 2001. A special feature of the camp was the bone mineral density diagnostic test. A team of 14 doctors from South Delhi Medical Association specializing in various areas of health, provided their valuable insight, technical skills and effort in assuring the camp was a roaring success.

Workshop and Interactive Sessions with Doctors

From the year 2001 we started organising regular medical camps in the slums and villages of Gurgaon. Camps covering women’s issues, asthamaand allergies, heart issues, mental health, diabetes were also organised. Sukarya organizes comprehensive health care camps and specialized medical camps in urban slums and rural villages of Gurgaon camps regularly to help the poor access free health care services including medical check-up, diagnosis and referral services. Sukarya has organized heart care and diabetes detection camp, heart care camps, mental health camps, eye camp, multi-specialty treatment camp and health check up camps for pregnant and lactating women. These camps also serve the purpose of advocating healthy practices by conducting workshops, presentations and informal discussions. The camps are conducted by doctors from the South Delhi Medical Association. Sukarya caters to 500 patients on an average in each camp.

Sukarya initiated cleanliness drive in the slum of DLF Phase-V. The objective was to educate and motivate the slum dwellers to keep their vicinity clean for preventing recurrent outbreaks of diseases like malaria, cholera, TB, dengue etc. in 2004, 2005

Sukarya joined hands with the Health Department of Government of Haryana for conducting the Pulse Polio Vaccination drive in DLF Phase V, Gurgaon. Sukarya organized door-to-door campaign in which they covered approximately 1000 children to make the pulse-polio vaccination drive a success.

Spice and cereal processing unit as a livelihood enhancement activity for women started in 2004. The project started with the specific objective of assisting women in generating additional income for meeting their household needs and becoming economically self-reliant.The pilot project started in the premises of Sukaryawherein a group of women were provided basic training on spice and cereal processing, packaging and marketing to engage them in production of unadulterated spices, pickles and chutney as an income enhancement initiative. The project benefited several women of Wazirabad and Kanhai villages.

CASP PLAN 21st May 2004 Sukarya was invited to participate in the National Consultation on "Young People: Towards a Healthy Future" organized by the Community Aid and Scholarship ProgrammePlan, New Delhi held at India Habitat Centre on 21st May 2004. Sukarya volunteers enacted a play "Hamari Bitiya" on the perils of early marriage which received wide applause by the other participants.

Saath Saath Project (2004-2006)The Project objective was to impart life skills through learning about self, environment, interpersonal skills, problem solving, decision making, handling of emotions and stress management (mental health). An important component of the project was education on ‘reproductive health’ and covers issues like sexual health, marriage, family planning, parenthood and related aspects. It is important to note that the trained youngsters act as ‘community educators’ and spread the message to others within their community. The project has so far benefited 300 adolescent girls from the 3 villages of Tighra, Ghata and Samaspur.

Kishori Shakti Yojna (2004-2006)Sukarya was given the opportunity to assist in the implementation of the Government of India scheme i.e Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) in villages of Gurgaon. The Program focuses on school drop out girls in the age group of 11-18 years and attempts to meet their nutrition, health, education, literacy, recreational and skill development needs. With the assistance of the Anganwadi workers, the focal point of ICDS services and other ICDS functionaries Sukarya was successful in catering to approximately 300 adolescent non school going girls of village Tighra and Ghata.

Training of Trainers (Community participation and advocacy) for SukaryaVolunteers2004 (27-29th February 2004, 6-8 November 2004, 20-23 December 2004)

Tsunami, Tamil Nadu, 2004After the Tsunami disaster on 26th December 2004, Sukarya'steam of volunteers at Injambakkam Temple, Chennai, started the initial relief work by providing food and other important materials to the people. We air lifted 250 kilograms of essential materials like water, food items, medicines and clothes on 30th December 2004 and 509 kilograms on 9th January 2005 from Delhi to Chennai through Sahara Airways.A team of six Sukarya volunteers from Delhi reached Chennai on 18th January 2005. They surveyed the affected area and identified the village Pudhunadukuppam for providing relief assistance. We provided essential food items, utensils, clothes, blankets and medicines to all the families of this village.

2005 was an important landmark for Sukarya, marking a strategic shift in our operations. Fueled by the demand of a growing organization, we started to feel the need for professionals who could help us in our programs. Thus far, our team comprised of people who had come forward to volunteer for us. For this first time in 2005, we began hiring full time staff from reputed institutions of social work. 2005 was also the year when we actively started seeking institutional funding.

We received support from Population Foundation of India to undertake an intervention for the prevention and control of iron deficient anameia among pregnant, lactation women and adolescent girls in 10 villages of Gurgaon block. The pilot project implemented over a period of three years covered a population of 30,000 women and girls.

Fund Raising Event 16th April 2005The evening included "Swardhara" by BiswajeetRoy Choudhary (Noted Sarod Player) & ShantiSharma (Noted Sufi Singer) and a dance drama on the life of "Meera", by Shri Ram Bhartiya Kala Kendra.

SUKARYA SWASTHYA KENDRAThe Sukarya Swasthya Kendra functioning since 2005 inSukarya’s premises at Sushant Lok Phase I Gurgaon is cateringto the basic health needs of the population residing in suchurban slums. The facilities provided by the Swasthya Kendra,include free medical check-up for the poor, provision ofspecialised diagnosis and free medicine. Referrals are alsoprovided for specialized treatment as and when required. Thecentre also acts as an information and education centre thatimparts health education and counseling services to the familiesin the project area.

Sukarya organized the event called "Sukarya Sehat Mela" on 5th November, 2006in the premises of Shalom Hills International school, Sushant Lok, Gurgaon targetedat the urban population of Gurgaon . The mela was inaugurated by the Hon'bleParliamentary Secretary, Government of Haryana, Shri Rao Dan Singh.

People to People India non-formal schools running in Gurgaon. These schools are running in Chakarpur, Jharsa, Sector 39, Basai Road. Sukarya provides health facilities to approximately 700 students of various HUMANA schools.

Sukarya has provided health check up facilities to 300 students in a government school adopted by ICF (India Citizen Forum) in Nathupur.

COMMUNITY BASED HEALTH CENTRESukarya, ran a health center in Bandhwari Village, Gurgaon District from January 2007-September 2010. This was run in partnership with the Bandhwari community with support of Charities Aid Foundation India CAF and Incentive Destinations.

The goal of the Bandhwari health centre was to increase awareness and improve the overall health status of the Bandhwari gram panchayat. In the centre an M.B.B.S doctor renders medical services to the people of the community five days a week. In order to strengthen community participation, four community health workers have been selected and trained from the village. These health workers act as a conduit between the center and the needy families. They not only bring in those requiring medical help to the health centre but also follow-up with the patients during the course of their treatment. To specifically address the issues of woman’s health, visits of female specialist doctor are scheduled twice in a month. Apart from this curative and partly preventive aspect that focuses on timely identification and treatment of health problems; the program also focuses on developing health seeking behaviour through information and education activities.

In order to develop the community stake and participation and also to make the program self sustaining, a small user friendly fees of Rs.10/- is levied from the patients for the consultation. The fund generated as such is being used to cover partly the cost of running the centre.

Promoting Rural Health through Mobile Health Services

Promoting Rural Health through MobileHealth ServicesSukarya implemented a project focusing on delivering healthservices through a mobile diagnostic clinic in six villages ofPataudi block from April 2007 to May, 2008. The objective ofthe Mobile Health Diagnostic Clinic was to reach theunderserved population with non-existent accessible medicalfacilities in the area. This marked the beginning of mobilehealth services in rural areas of Haryana, by Sukarya.

Saathi Project – Women Empowerment by strengthening Self Help groups and micro enterprise development (November 2007 – August 2010)

The project known as the SAATHI project was started on 1st November 2007. Apart from the spice and cereal processing unit, the project involves promotion and strengthening of women SHG in the project communities. This project with the overall objective of economic empowerment of women is being supported by Godfrey Philips India (GPI) and Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

The project aims at developing savings and thrift groups of women and providing them with vocational training and entrepreneurship development support on viable economic activities through training and other back-up support inputs in packaging, marketing etc. to make women economic self-reliant. The self help group has helped mobilize and organize women collectively for financial and social gains. It has helped inculcate in women members the habit of saving.

Physiotherapy Meet 26th April 2008An awareness building interactive meet on physiotherapy as an alternativetherapy was organized in Sukarya office Gurgaon on 26th April 2008.

Several eminent doctors addressed the participants and shared information onback pain and other muscular-skeletal conditions in which physiotherapy can bean effective remedy.

Men As Partners in Improving the Health Status ofRural communities

In June, 2008, with the support of Bird Group through the CorporateChallenge of the Delhi Half Marathon, the implementation of the projectfocusing on developing male partnership and participation in improving theoverall health status of rural communities began in Mewat district ofHaryana. The objectives of the project were to work towards improvementof mother and child health and reduction in maternal and child mortalityamong the project population. To promote good health practices, healthseeking behaviour through health education, increase access to qualityhealth services by strengthening the coordination with governmentdepartment to ensure active participation of male members.

The project covered a population of 29,000 in thirteen villages of TauroBlock of Mewat District. The project interventions covered men, womenand children in the project area with a special focus on pregnant women,lactating mothers and school children.

SHOBHA – A step towards self relianceThe objective of this project is to enable the skill development of girls and women in the villages by providing a vocational beautician training course. It was conducted in the village Ghata of Gurgaon District. The duration of the course is for 4 months and the technical training was provided by a recognized and experienced professional of this field.

Community Level Nutrition Workshop

A nutrition workshop on 13th December 2008 was organized in village Bandhwari. "Santulit Aahar – Phalta Phulta Parivar "was the theme of the workshop. Sukaryachairperson Ms. Meera Sathpathy was the chief guest of the function. The main objective of the workshop was to develop awareness on what constitutes a healthy dietary pattern for different age-groups and motivate the participants to adopt these. The whole session was divided into five different segments on the basis of age groups. We invited five eminent Nutritionists who are working in various reputed hospitals. Each nutritionist spoke on ideal dietary patterns according to different age group. Almost 250 people attended the session. Apart from the village people, government officials from the health department were present in the session. List of speakers included Anshu Kumra, Consultant Nutritionist, PritiKulshrestha Consultant Nutritionist, Jyoti Arora – Nutritionist Artemis, Shushma –Nutritionist Umkal and Aruna Nutritionist Kalyani Hospital.

In this workshop a book published by Sukarya "Prabhavshali Vyanjan Vidhia" was also released. This is a book written in Hindi and contains a list of iron rich recipes.

The project PAHAL was launched by Sukarya in December 2009 for the undeserved slum community of Saraswati Kunj located in Sector – 53, DLF phase – V, Gurgaon.

The main objective of the project is to provide health facilities to the vulnerable population of the area and to create awareness about healthy practices.

The project involves conducting health Camps on a regular basis through which basic health care services are provided to the community. The health camp also involves conducting awareness sessions on better hygiene and ways to combat health hazards emanating from poor hygienic conditions and lack of safe drinking water.

The homes of majority of the population in the area comprises of a hutment or jhuggi. A substantial population in the area is that of rag pickers, who collect rags, scrap and recyclable waste from garbage dumps from around the city and bring it into the area. The area therefore looked like a garbage ground full of insects and mosquitoes, which posed a serious health hazard to the residents. A cleanliness drive was therefore conducted by mobilizing the youth of the community who sanitized their locality by spraying DDT provided by Sukarya.

Sukarya has joined hands with the government in implementing the polio eradication program in the community. The intervention involves creating awareness and mobilizing community during the immunization drives and visiting door-to-door immunizing children of 0-5 years by community health workers.

Launching of KIRAN PariyojanaThe KIRAN Pariyojna (Knowledge based Intervention for Reproductive health Advocacy and action) was officially launched on 25th February, 2010. The inauguration ceremony was held in the auditorium of Yasin MeoDegree College, Nuh. The inaugural ceremony started with lighting the lamp by Dr. Sayeeda Hamid, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India.

Population Foundation of India PFI and Sukarya were jointly implementing the KIRAN Pariyojna across 29 villages (12 of Tauru and 17 Nuh block) of Mewat District covering a total population of 70,000.

Mrs. Meera Satpathy, Chairperson, Sukarya briefed the audience about the mission and objectives of Sukarya. She explained how Population Foundation of India (PFI) and Sukarya through the Kiran project will be working towards a healthy Mewat. She further shared that the objectives of the project is to improve reproductive and child health, promote positive health seeking behaviour through IEC/BCC activities in Tauru and Nuhblock of Mewat district.

Mr. A R Nanda, Executive Director, Population Foundation of India introduced the KIRAN Pariyojna at length. In his insightful address, Mr. A R Nanda briefed about the mission, objectives and thematic areas of PFI and its presence across states.

In his address, Mr. Rao Abhay Singh Chairperson, Zila Parishad, Mewat and Gurgaon congratulated Mr. A R Nanda, Mrs. Meera Satpathy and fellow colleagues for designing Kiran Pariyojana for Mewat and expressed his thankfulness for the benevolent presence of Mrs. Sayeeda Hamid, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India in one of the disadvantaged district like Mewat and other dignitaries invited in the program. While reiterating his support and cooperation in the venture; he also endorsed the importance and relevance of health interventions for the people of Mewat who are suffering from poor health conditions.

Dr. Sayeeda Hamid congratulated Sukarya and PFI team for designing and launching of Kiran project. Referring to the importance of institutional delivery she requested all women to go in for institutional deliveries. While talking on female literacy she requested the audience to send their children to schoolDr. Sharmila Neogi, Joint Director, PFI delivered the vote of thanks.

SWASTHYA KENDRA AT WALIAWAS VILLAGE The Waliawas village is situated at the Gurgaon- Faridabad road. The total population of the village is 3,000 (approx.) and 700 households and a hamlet. There is no permanent transportation facility to reach the village. The health status of village is poor due to lack of basic health facilities. There is no hospital as a result the people have to depend on quack. The closest civil hospital is 20km from the village and the services of private hospital are expensive and therefore not affordable.ACTIVITIES DONEA MBBS doctor will be available 5 days in week except Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am- 1:30pm.Primary health care services will be provided by the health center in a regular and systematic manner.A professional dispenser will be available who will provide medicines, counsel and take good care of the health center.The community Health Mobilizer will sensitize and mobilize community on health concerns.The service of diagnosis, treatment, and referral will be provided to the patients in the community.The health awareness session among people on importance of nutrition, reproductive health, immunization, TB, DOTS program, sanitation, hygiene safe drinking water and family planning will be conducted.Regular follow up of the patients will be done.

Ek Pehal - Integrated Rural Development Programme – Developing Model VillagesSupported by Bird Group this project was initiated in July 2011

• Initiated in village Manger, we aim to develop Manger as a model village by addressing the entire gamut of key developmental areas – health and hygiene, education, women’s empowerment and life skills.

•We are empowering the community to address issues of lack of adequate services and facilities.

• Reaching 3000 people on a daily basis.

Launch of Hiffazat ProjectSukarya in collaboration with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd Launched a Project titled Mother & Child Health Care through specialised clinics named Hifazat covering the population of approx 45000 in 15 villages of Distt. Mewat, Jhajjar & Gurgaon of Haryana .

The inauguration function was held on 6th Feb 2012 at village Kanhai of Distt. Gurgaon. Mrs. . Sangeeta Nayak , Chairperson of Mahila Srishti Samiti Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. inaugurated the function .While addressing the audience she informed about the approach of Power Grid on improving Maternal Health & emphasised that a mother’s health profoundly affects the health and well-being of her children thus improved maternal health and nutrition, as well as quality of care at delivery leads to improved newborn care & child health .

Delhi Half Marathon - running for a causeThe Delhi Half Marathon has been providing NGOs with a unique opportunity to spread awareness and create visibility for their cause. In the process NGOs are able to garner public support and participation towards their efforts. Sukarya eyes Delhi Half Marathon as a platform critical to resource mobilization and creating greater awareness about its work among the society.

Sukarya received the award for the highest pledge raising NGO through Corporate Challenge in the year 2010 and 2011. In the year 2006 Sukaryawas awarded the Highest Pledge raising NGO in the Hutch Delhi Half marathon 2006.
