Human relationships are often difficult to reconcile with our

ideas of Christian tolerance and forbearance. There are certainaspects of them, however, which do much to restore a iaded faithin the innate kindliness of humanity. Amongst these are the cour-tesies which have come to be recognized as part of the age-old tradi-tion of the sea. Arising orginally out of a common need forassistance on a perilous element, throughout the long and glorioushistory of the merchant marine there has persisted this recognitionof the importance of courtesies, so that matters at sea, from the verysmallest to the very gravest, are conducted with a dignity and lack ofcasualness which are rare indeed in our time.

The greatest courtesy of them all, that of risking one’s ownsafety and life to go to the rescue of a fellow-creature in peril, isprobably encountered more frequently at sea than anywhere else.The radio message S.O.S. with its poignant appeal in the darknessand the night for assistance, is invariably responded to at sea withall the resources at the listener’s command. When the last resorthas been reached on a sinking ship, the gallant gesture of ~womenand children first" is on every occasion respected. No vessel is toosmall to be denied assistance and no ship is too great to respond toan appeal for aid. The very stateliest liner will willingly turn asidefrom her course at an instant’s notice to go to the rescue of some tinyfishing craft or other small wanderer upon the waters, and in suchcases the commander of the liner treats the master of the littleschooner with the dignity and courtesy due from one ship captainto another. Even that strange and apparently misguided sense ofduty which compels the captain of a sinking ship to stay on the bridgeof his doomed vessel is more a matter of politeness than foolhardiness.Long may the gallantry and courage which are of the essence of thesea’s courtesies continue to exist.
