ADVANCE NOTIFICATION OF RESEARCH VISIT: Researchers wishing to use microfilm are requested to make advance reservations for microfilm viewing machines. Monday through Friday, microfilm viewers are available in four-hour blocks:

7:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. 11:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. additional times on Tuesdays: 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Researchers wishing to use original records are encouraged to contact the staff by telephone or mail at least a week in advance of a prospective visit. Research in original records can be complex; advance notice assures more efficient service. OBTAINING REPRODUCTIONS: Copying textual and microfilmed records may be done in the Research Room on self-service equipment. Microfilm-to-paper copies can be obtained from coin-operated equipment; payment for paper-to-paper copies is tendered at the end of each day at the attendant's desk. RECORDS FOR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH The National Archives-Southeast Region has custody of millions of records, on paper and on microfilm, created by various agencies of the United States Government. The records most useful for genealogical research are listed in this pamphlet. These records may contain full information about a person or little more than a name.

The census records for 1790-1920 consist of nationwide listings in each census year. Indexes are available for many censuses. General military indexes cover volunteer soldiers from throughout the United States taking part in several wars. Other microfilm collections specify the port, state and/or region. Most of the Southeast Region's textual holdings are from Federal agencies and U. S. District Courts in eight Southeastern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). The World War I Draft Registration Cards cover the entire United States--a nationwide collection. Researchers wishing to use this collection may do so between the hours of 8:30-3:00. Staff members and volunteers are available to advise visitors in conducting their research. Guidelines and regulations for using the facility are also available. CENSUS 1790--1ST CENSUS 12 Rolls.
