Procedure to Wear a Gemstone (Ratna Dharan Karne ki Vidhi)In this post I'm going to explain the procedure of wearing a gemstone. Many people do not know the method of wearing a stone so I thought to write this post. I am listing the method in a step wise manner below so that it is easier to understand for the readers.1) Choosing the right stone: This needs to be done by a competent astrologer. The horoscope needs to be analyzed in detail to suggest a good stone. In my practical experience, I have seen almost 80% of the people wearing wrong stones. Please be aware that if incompatible stones or the stones of bad houses are worn, they may giveside effects. It is very very important that the stones of maraka (killer) houses are not worn as they may prove to be harmful. As far as possible the stones of malefic planets;

Mars (Stone:Red Coral), Saturn (Stone:Blue Sapphire),Sun (Stone:Ruby), Rahu(Stone:Hessonite), Ketu (Stone:Cat's Eye);

should be avoidedbecause they may give side effects in terms of bad health, relationship gone wrong, fluctuations in career etc. They should be suggested only in rare circumstances.2) Quality of stone: Quality of stone in terms of cut, clarity, color and luster should be good. Stones with irregularities and internal cracks should be avoided. If certain areas/pockets of stone tend to exhibit brilliant color that changes in hue and size as the stone is moved, this is considered a defect and the stone should be rejected. The clearer the stone the better it is. Synthetic and chemically treated stones should be rejected.Stones should be natural and untreated.

3) Suitability: Most of the people just buy the stones and start wearing them which is not the proper way. Stone should always be tested before wearing. It may be a good stone as per your horoscope but it still needs to be tested. It can be tested by keeping the stone/ring under your pillow at night or wearing the stone on your body so that it touches your skin. It should be done at night only. Do it for 7 nights and see if you notice bad health, bad news or bad dreams etc. If you do, then the stone is not suitable for you. Please reject it. Don't worry there are many other remedial measures in astrology which you can adopt.

4)Muhurta: This is one of the most important steps in wearing a gemstone. The planet whose stone you are going to wear should be in a good position and strong at the time of wearing. Apart from this, the nakshatra on the day of wearing should be auspicious. Stones should always be worn during shukla paksha (bright half of moon) and on the day of the planet whose stone is being worn. Thisquick reference guidecan be referred for the days of every stone.

5) Method: Ring should be made in such a way that the bottom of the stone keeps touching the skin. Alternatively a pendant can also be made, provided it touches the skin.Dip the ring/pendant in unboiled milk or ganga jal a night before. Get up early in the morning as the ring should be worn within one hour of sunrise. Take bath and wear clean clothes. Preferably wear the color of the planet whose stone you are going to wear.

For Yellow Sapphire: Wear yellow colorFor Emerald: Wear green colorFor Ruby: Wear white or red colorFor Pearl: Wear white colorFor Red coral: Wear bright red colorFor Diamond: Wear white colorFor Blue Sapphire: Wear blue colorFor Hessonite: Wear smoky or blue or black colorFor Cat's eye: Wear mixed or red color

Then, take the ring out from the milk/gangajal, sit on the floor on a carpet or a piece of cloth/aasan, face towards east direction, keep the ring in your right hand and start reciting the mantras of the planet whose stone you are going to wear. You need to recite the mantra for at least 108 times. Please referquick reference guideto know the planets and their stones and referthis postto know the mantra for each planet. After this you can wear the ring.

A Complete Introduction to Gemstone - "Red Coral" (Moonga Ratna ka Sampoorna Parichay)

This is my second post as a part of the introductory series on Gemstones. The first post in the series was onPearl. This post is about Red Coral.

It comes in many colors. It is also an organic gemstone like Pearl. That is why the chemical structure of Pearl and Coral is very similar. The main composition of Red Coral is Calcium Carbonate. It is also found in sea. Tiny living beings called Polyps keeps on secreting a substance which grows in trees and branches like formation. This is called Coral. Coral comes in many colors like brown, black, white, red, blue etc. Red colored Corals are most popular. Red Coral has been very popular since ancient world in many cultures to protect from evil eye and the like.

Physical Properties of Coral:Mohs Scale: 3 - 4Specific Gravity: 2.60 - 2.70Birefringence: 0.160Refractive Index: 1.486 - 1.658

Origin: 75% of worldwide production of Coral comes from Italy. Italian (Sardinian) Corals are considered to be the finest. Other countries like Japan, Taiwan, Australia also produce Corals.

Natural Vs Imitation Corals: Natural Corals, as has been described above, come from the Sea. Imitation Corals can be made of things like bamboo, plastic, glass etc. Natural Corals are always translucent or opaque. Natural Corals can be identified after measuring their physical properties as given above. Imitation Corals will not display the same physical properties (specific gravity, refractive index etc.) as of Coral.

How to Identify a Genuine Coral: As mentioned above, there are two main categories of Corals; Natural and Imitation (or Fake). Every stone has certain definitive properties like specific gravity, Moh's hardness, Refractive Index etc. All these parameters can be determined from tools like Refractometer (used to measure birefringence and refractive index), Polariscope etc. and matched with the actual values of Coral to see if it is a genuine Coral or the imitation. Apart from this Microscope can help in detecting the actual structure of the Coral.When you go to a gemstone dealer to buy a gemstone, most of the time they say that the stone is natural and genuine, never believe them and get the stone tested from a reliable source or lab.The worrying factor is that now a days some gem labs have nexus with some corrupt jewelers and the labs give genuine certificates for fake stones to the jewelers. And then these jewelers sell fake "certified gems" in high rates to you.

Treatments on Coral: Unprocessed Coral is matte but treatment is done on it to give it a glossy finish and shine. Treatments are done to hide the cracks, to beautify the stone, to hide the impurities and inclusions within the stone. So, the buyers should be careful to identify these treatments. Red Corals are dyed in dark red color to give them that rich red feel. Astrologically such treated stones are not considered suitable.

Who Should Wear it: Those who have Aries, Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces in their Lagna (First House) can wear Red Coral.

Mantra to Energize Red Coral:Om Kam Kujaaye NamahaorOm Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaaye NamahaGeneral Benefits: Red Coral is Mars's stone. Mars rules over land, court cases, enemies, brothers, health etc. Wearing a Red Coral gives benefit in all these areas. It also brings harmony in marital relations. It helps in alleviating blood disorders, weakness, lack of appetite, stomach disorders etc. Ash of Red Coral is also used to cure many diseases like the ones mentioned above. But be warned, stones should not be worn without the suggestion of an expert astrologer. If the stone is inappropriate as per your horoscope then it may harm you, if worn.

Contradictory Stones as per Vedic Astrology: Diamond, Blue Sapphire, Emerald, Hessonite and Cat's Eye should not be worn along with Red Coral.

Substitute Stones: Red Agate and Red Onyx.

Do's and Dont's: 1) Red Coral is very soft so it should be handled with care otherwise it may easily get scratches. Red Coral gives maximum benefit when worn withMars Yantra.

2) Red Coral gives complete benefit only when it is worn after energizing.3) After wearing Red Coral, it should not be removed even for a minute. Red Coral absorbs the rays of the sun and keeps on conserving the energy from the rays within your body. If Red Coral is removed even for a minute, the conserved energy gets immediately lost. If for some reason it needs to be removed, a new auspicious muhurta needs to be found and Red Coral needs to be charged again with mantras and then worn.4) Red Coral should be avoided to come in contact with harmful chemicals otherwise the color of the coral may get fade.5) Wear only natural Red Coral. Imitation Corals do not have any benefit.6) A Red Coral which has crack or black dots in it, should not be worn. It may give negative and depressing thoughts to the wearer.

What is Blue Sapphire:

Blue sapphire is Saturn's gemstone. Sapphire belongs to Corundum Mineral species. Corundum is the second hardest substance on earth after Diamond. Sapphire comes in many colors like blue, pink, yellow etc. Blue color of Sapphire comes due to the charge transfer between Titanium and Iron. There are very few sapphires which show brilliant blue colors. If you do see such sapphire then you should be suspicious because it may either be a heated sapphire or a substitute of Blue Sapphire like Lapis Lazuli.

Origin:The three most famous regions for sapphire are Kashmir, Burma and Srilanka. Other significant locations known for mining Sapphires are Madagascar, Australia, China, Montana USA, Tanzania and Thailand.

Natural Vs Synthetic Blue sapphire: Natural Blue Sapphires are mined but Synthetic Sapphires are produced in lab. Synthetic Sapphires look almost the same as a natural Sapphire. Most fake Blue Sapphires are made of glass. Look at the stone, if it is too big and too colorful then it may be a fake stone made of glass. Check for scratches on the surface of the Blue Sapphire. If there are many scratches then it should invoke suspicion. Because Blue Sapphire is one of the hardest substances and there are very few materials which can scratch a Sapphire. But if it is a glass, there might be many scratches.These are some general checks which anyone can do but the measurement of optical properties of the stone gives the actual result about the originality of the stone.

How to Identify a Genuine Blue Sapphire: As I have mentioned for other stones, that their imitations exist in the market, the same is true for Blue Sapphire as well. To identify a genuine Blue Sapphire, its physical and optical properties like specific gravity, Moh's hardness, Refractive Index etc. are measured and compared against the properties of a genuine Blue Sapphire and a conclusion is drawn if it is a natural or a synthetic Blue Sapphire. All these parameters can be determined from tools like Refractometer (used to measure birefringence and refractive index), Polariscope, spectrometer etc.

When you go to a gemstone dealer to buy a gemstone, most of the time they say that the stone is natural and genuine, never believe them and get the stone tested from a reliable source or lab.The worrying factor is that now a days some gem labs have nexus with some corrupt jewelers and the labs give genuine certificates for fake stones to the jewelers. And then these jewelers sell fake "certified gems" for high price to you.

Treatments on Blue Sapphire: Mostly the following kinds of treatments are done on Blue Sapphire:

1)Fracture Filling: In this kind of treatment, the fractures within the stone are filled with oil, wax or plastic to hide the deficiency of stone.

2)Lead Glass Fillings: This filling is done in the Blue Sapphire to hide the cracks and to increase the weight of the stone.

3)Heat Treatment: Blue Sapphire is heated at high temperature usually at 1900 degrees. This is done mainly to hide the impurities of the stone and to darken the blue color of the stone. Most of the brilliant blue colored sapphires that you see are heat treated.

4)Irradiation: In this type of treatment colorless stones are treated to give them blue color.

5)Beryllium Treatment: The stone is heated with Beryllium to give it Blue color.

The buyers should be careful to identify these treatments. Astrologically such treated stones are not considered suitable.

1)Laser Drilling:Area near inclusions is drilled with laser and a strong acid is filled in the hole which dissolves the impurity and make it less visible. This can be detected with a 10X loupe. Please refer the following image.

2)Coating:Certain colors in Diamond get lesser value in market so these are coated with the colors that are in high demand.

3)Glass Filling: Glass or similar stuff is filled in the cavities or cracks which make the Diamond appear flawless.4)Irradiationfor Color Enhancement: In this type of treatment the color of Diamond is enhanced.
