GEMS Cambridge International School NAIROBI
GCIS-Nairobi has high expectations for all its learners. In
the Early Years and Primary Schools we pride ourselves
on knowing each child as an individual in order to help
them make progress.
The development of the whole child is at the heart of
GCIS-N’s Secondary Education programme. Learning
in the Secondary School is about developing personal,
emotional and social skills as well as being an intellectual
and academic process. We aim to help children find their
voice – their own unique, personal significance. We
encourage them to think about what their contribution
will be in the world – how they will try to make a
difference as responsible and engaged members of the
School community as well as citizens of the world. We
nurture learning through child-centred approaches,
technology and a variety of learning styles. We also
endeavour to develop within our children thinking skills
and strong personal characteristics. In the Secondary
School we strive to deliver creative and interactive
programmes of study that are further enhanced and
enriched by a comprehensive programme of extra-
curricular activities which add breadth and depth to our
students’ learning.
As members of our community and as a result of their
time with us young people learn how to:
• Value their own culture while showing respect for that
of others
• Work as individuals and as part of a team
• Make and act upon informed choices concerning moral,
ethical and aesthetic issues
• Develop lively, positive and enquiring minds
• Strive for excellence at all times
• Take pride in their achievements and the success
of others
• Lead a balanced and thoughtful life
• Value the richness of Kenyan culture
• Be exposed and learn to network with international
cultures
Of course, as well as this we ably support our students in
gaining the qualifications that will enable them to follow
whatever path they wish in life, be it higher education
or employment. We offer a wide range of courses in
a variety of subjects and will strive to accommodate
whatever combination of subjects our students wish
to study at either IGCSE or A level. We will work with
them on their application to university wherever they
choose to go and make sure they are fully prepared for
student life.
In summary, our school is a magical place that will
transform your children into tomorrow’s young adults
with all the life skills and qualifications they will need to
be successful in life!
We look forward to welcoming you to our GCIS-Nairobi
family!

A Committed Teaching Team
All our teaching staff are well-qualified, bringing with
them relevant experience from around the world. They
are carefully selected to complement the school ethos
and be part of the innovative, energetic team dedicated
to achieving the best from all children. Through their
skills, they are able to create a stimulating learning
environment for all pupils who develop confidence,
skills and enjoyment within nurturing surroundings.
Our ongoing programme of professional development
ensures that the strategies, methods and resources used
reflect the standards of best practice from around the
world. Training that is undertaken is monitored to ensure
that it is supporting the high standards of teaching and
learning within the school.
All members of the teaching team are fully committed to
supporting children as they work towards their personal
targets through providing high quality education.
World-Centred Perspective
We embrace a world-centred perspective, promoting
programmes that provide opportunities for students to
develop their full potential in all respects. The GEMS four
Core values are part of the planned curriculum and form
the foundation for our educational programmes right
from Foundation stage.
Leadership Opportunities
Underpinning our strong academic programme is our
belief in a holistic education. One of our prime values is
the development of leadership.
As part of our teaching philosophy, we expect teachers
at the school to:
• Actively engage students in their own learning
• Systematically develop students learning skills so that
they become increasingly independent
• Have high expectations of what children can achieve
• Use assessment for learning techniques to help children
to reflect on what they know and to set targets for
the future
• Have high expectations of what children can achieve
• Use stimulating activities in well-paced lessons
• Create a purposeful atmosphere that promotes good
learning
• Encourage children to participate in Extracurricular
Programmes
Teaching Assistants
Teaching assistants are available throughout the school
and provide support within the classrooms. They work
under the directions of the class teacher to ensure that
the curriculum is accessible for all pupils. From FS1
through to Year 6, full time Teaching Assistants work
with each class. This helps to ensure that all children in
these year groups have excellent opportunities to access
each activity which is on offer and to achieve their full
potential. From Year 7 to Year 13 teaching assistants are
timetabled to work across the specialized classes.
Partnership with Parents
GEMS Cambridge International School recognises that it
is only through parents and teachers working together in
close partnership that pupils will make progress.
Through a regular communications system – the
Communicator, written reports, SMS, email and a
programme of consultation evenings – parents are
regularly updated on the progress of their children and on
activities in the school. Parents are welcome to discuss
their children’s individual progress with the concerned
teacher or Principal at a convenient time.
Parent Forums including a monthly Parent Coffee
Morning with the Principal, Parental Engagement
Sessions and PTA meetings are conducted on a regular
basis. These meetings provide an opportunity to all our
parents to voice any concerns, suggestions or ideas they
might have.
The Learning Programme
The curriculum taught at GEMS Cambridge International
School is that of The National Curriculum for England
and is divided into Key stages.
The National Curriculum provides a broad, structured
framework which outlines the expected levels of
achievement during a child’s educational journey. As
part of the structure there is a programme of student
assessments and evaluations to ensure that pupils are
working towards levels of attainment appropriate to
their age and capability.
Within all areas of school life, attention is paid to the
development of aspects linked to the GEMS core Values.
For example: Leadership skills are a part of the daily life
at GEMS Cambridge International School. House captains
and their vice captains are part of this but children are
also taught how to take a lead in their learning, to show
initiative and be responsible, whilst at all times showing
consideration for others.

World Citizenship in a way that promotes open and tolerant
young minds. GEMS Cambridge International School
actively teaches pupils not to discriminate against others
and supports them in becoming global citizens.
Foundation stage and Key stage 1
FS1 to Year 2
The Early Years programme for children aged three to five
is called the Foundation stage. It is designed to prepare
children to begin the National Curriculum for England,
which begins around the age of five in Key stage 1 and
continues through Key stage 5.
The child’s progress is closely monitored and assessed
against appropriate age performance standards. Every
encouragement and help is provided for children to
attain their full potential.
Focused on whole-child development, proper attention
is given to the social development, skills, knowledge and
understanding that children need to interact efficiently
in a complex and changing world. Children in Foundation
stage and Key stage 1 are introduced to Foundations in
Reading, Writing, Science, Mathematics and Information
and Communications Technology through a system
of practical applications, supported by a positive and
stimulating learning environment.
Children learn best when they actively participate in the
learning process. Learning through structured play and a
regular programme of visits forms an integral part of the
Foundation stage and Key stage 1 curriculum.
Supported by a well-resourced library and computer
facilities, students in Foundation stage and Key stage
1 are encouraged to explore and develop their natural
abilities and talents.
By the end of Year 2, all students will have developed
social skills and a love of learning, as well as be able
The Curriculum
to read and write, and use simple mathematics at a
level appropriate for their age or beyond. They would
have gained a significantly improved understanding of
our world through knowledge of elementary History,
Geography and Science. The overall educational
experience is enriched with exposure to Personal,
Social and Health Education (PHSE). Students will also
develop their creative talents in Art and Music alongside
their physical development through Dance, Games and
Gymnastic activities.
Primary School: Key stage 2
Year 3 to Year 6
Students in this programme follow Key stage 2 of the
National Curriculum for England, which continues
to build on the foundations that are established in
Foundation stage and Key stage 1.
Ongoing assessment ensures that each student’s
progress and development are continuous and meet
predetermined standards. We encourage students to
think independently, use their initiative and participate in
a meaningful and active manner in the learning process.
At the end of Key stage 2, students study for University
of Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations in English, Maths
and Science.
The core academic curriculum includes instruction
in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and
Information and Communications Technology. Students
are introduced in Year 3 to Foreign Languages such
as French. Kiswahili is taught to all students and
caters for native and non-native speakers. The overall
education experience is enhanced and supplemented
with instructions in Art, Music, Physical Education,
and Citizenship/Personal, Social and Health Education
(PHSE).
A selection of extracurricular activities broadens
the opportunities for students to enhance their
natural abilities and to challenge themselves through
development of new interest areas. Extracurricular
activities may include Drama, Choir, Computers, Art and
Design, a variety of sports activities and a number of
school clubs.
Throughout the educational experience at GEMS
Cambridge International School, students are involved in
learning the practical use and application of Information
and Communication Technology (ICT).
Development of leadership qualities and skills is put
into practical application in Key stage 2 providing
each student the opportunity to share class and school
responsibilities that nurture organisational skills, co-
operation, accountability and team spirit.
By the end of Year 6 all students will have experienced
a well-rounded education and have developed a strong
character, articulate expression and confidence and be
well-prepared for their secondary education.
Middle School: Key stage 3
Year 7 to Year 9
Year 7 to 9, known as Key stage 3, follows the National
Curriculum for England. Students study English,
Mathematics, History, Geography, Science, Information
Communication Technology, Art, Design Technology,
Drama, Music, Modern languages, Physical Education
and Personal, Social and Health Education. We also
teach Kiswahili to all of our students.
The National Curriculum focuses on knowledge, skills
and understanding so our students learn to apply the
knowledge that they learn in different situations. This is
an important skill for life and helps to prepare them for
the world of work.
Students are given levels of attainment that vary from
level 3 to level 8 in Key stage 3 and are based on criteria
in each subject. At the end of each year there is an exam
to assess their progress and at the end of the Key stage
they will sit a Cambridge Checkpoint assessment that
will give a final level.
Senior School: Key stage 4 and 5
Year 10 to Year 13
In Key stage 4 (Years 10 to 11), the IGCSE and BTEC
Level 2 curriculum is introduced. A range of subjects,
catering for a variety of academic needs and interests,
are offered. These include the compulsory subjects of
English, Mathematics and Information Communication
Technology, as well as a number of optional subjects
such as French, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History,
Geography, Art and Design, Music and BTEC Level 2
Business Studies. Some of these subjects have coursework
that is continuously assessed as well as terminal exams
held in May and June of Year 11. BTEC courses consist
purely of coursework and there is no terminal exam.
IGCSEs are assessed using grades A* - G with A* - C being
considered a good pass, BTECs are given the levels pass,
merit or distinction which are the equivalent to a good
IGCSE pass.
During the final two years of school (Year 12 and 13),
students sit for the AS and A level. An Edexcel BTEC
Level 3 vocational course has also been introduced.
Again, a wide range of subjects are offered which assist
in preparing students for higher education or a multitude
of career opportunities. Key leadership qualities are very
important in these senior years. Students in these classes
will be challenged to accept and develop responsibilities
as leaders and citizens of the world.

GEMS Cambridge International School, Nairobi offers a
safe and secure weekly or full-term basis boarding facility
for boys and girls from Year 3 (6 years of age) upwards.
The Boarding Hostel at GEMS Cambridge International
School, Nairobi is a home away from home, where a
safe, secure and nurturing environment provides clear
behavioural guidelines and the necessary structure to
students of all ages.
The GCIS –Nairobi boarding programme offers a unique
co-educational experience that accommodates male and
female students in one complex. This creates a family
style environment where responsibility for the student
is assumed by caring “house parents” and a dedicated
team of resident staff.
Naturally there are areas exclusively for the females and
the males but there are also common areas where all
students can mix in a friendly, pleasant and supportive
manner. This helps to make boarding life as similar as
possible to the home and family environment. Living as
a community is fun and students enjoy a full life with a
range of activities after school hours.
Students learn to take care of their own personal space
as well as contributing to the overall care of the house
and equipment provided. Students are also expected to
be tolerant towards others, helping and assisting where
necessary, having fun but being bold to speak out when
values are compromised.
At GEMS we aim to provide security, stimulation,
friendship and independence in an environment away
from home. We endeavour to nurture the students
through the great boarding experience and help them
achieve their potential and interact with fellow students
from all over the globe.
We have space for 80 boarders in the Boarding Hostel
with separate floors for girls and boys. Students from
age 7 years to 18 years are accepted and both full-term
boarding and weekly boarding are available.
Four to six students share a room (dependent on age)
and each has a lockable wardrobe, night stand, and
bedside light. All bedding linen and towels are provided
by the school.
Boarding
In boarding, we aim at providing a holistic education for
children away from home and so we must meet the needs
of each individual student in their care to enable them
flourish and develop. We have a Mentorship programme
that enables each student to connect with a mentor to
support their individual learning and development.
The mentors are residential staff whose role is to mentor
to inspire, challenge, and motivate. This programme
is aimed at promoting students’ personal and social
development by fostering positive attitudes. The mentors
monitor the students’ overall progress, academic,
personal and social.
Facilities
The Boarding Hostel has its own student common
rooms with satellite TV and many other recreational
facilities. Study rooms on each floor are fitted out with
individual desks as well as project areas. Homework or
prep sessions are given priority and are scheduled every
evening from Monday to Friday. Students are supervised
during homework time, as well as during all activities
and outings.
The swimming pool, indoor sports arena, running track,
ICT labs and other facilities are available for use by the
boarders out of school hours, under supervision. During
the weekends there is a full timetable, which includes
outdoor games and sports, indoor games, creative
sessions, movie nights, cinema and theatre visits, outings
to the Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre and more.
On Sundays, dedicated transport and supervision are
provided for the students who wish to attend church
services.
Mentorship
Catering
A fully-fitted kitchen and dining hall are situated in the
school block. All food is prepared fresh on site each
day and the menus are designed specifically to provide
a healthy and balanced nutritious diet. Students are
regularly consulted on the menu and their suggestions
are carefully evaluated and considered.
Meal times are fixed in the schedule and all students eat
together along with the boarding staff.
Laundry
The Boarding Hostel has its own laundry and provides
laundry services to all students at no charge. All students’
clothing must be clearly labelled to avoid items being
lost. A weekly schedule allows for separate laundry days
for boys and girls Monday to Saturday.
Security
Security is a priority at GEMS Cambridge International
School, Nairobi. There are security guards on duty night
and day, both at the gate and patrolling the grounds.
Three guards are posted at the Boarding Hostel at all
times. Electric fencing, high boundary walls, security
lighting, CCTV and alarm systems connected to Ultimate
Security have also been installed.
Boarding students are forbidden from leaving the
property unless it is for a planned school activity or
hostel outing. Full-term boarders may have exeat
weekends out of boarding subject to a written request
from their parents received by the Boarding Manager by
the Thursday 12pm prior to the requested weekend out.
All boarders must provide a signed and approved ‘Host
Form’ to be allowed exeat priviledges.
Health and Well-being
A qualified and highly-experienced School Nurse resides
on the school campus and is always on duty to assist
boarders with medical problems. The School Nurse also
contributes to the menu selection for all school catering
and ensures the boarding students receive the correct
nutrition and daily exercise to ensure a well-balanced
healthy regime is followed by all students.

My Boarding Experience in GEMSBy Crystal Kamuhangi, Year 7
People might say boarding is frightening, but for me it
is an experience I think every child must have. GEMS
boarding house is fun, sure sometimes the teachers are
strict but it is only to put us into good shape.
We eat a variety of food, we have outdoor activities to
keep us fit and on Saturdays we have movie nights to
end the week for us.
Everyone welcomes you in and you feel at home. I have
learnt to be respectful, disciplined and organised; I have
also learnt to be much more structured in GEMS. The
boarding house staff take great care of us like we are
their own. All the boarders treat each other like family.
At the end of the day GEMS Boarding House feels like a
real home away from home.
GEMS Education- a long term commitement to quality education
Why the ‘GEMS’ name?
Our name and the GEMS Education logo symbolise our
belief that every child is a GEM…precious and unique,
ready to shine and achieve his or her hopes and dreams.
We value and cherish our children in school just as they
are at home by providing individual care and attention.
We reinforce that each child:
• has special talents
• has limitless potential
• is unique - there is no other child exactly the same in
the entire world.
We value parents’ trust in allowing us to provide the
education and care that will enable their children to
grow, learn and be ready for a bright future.
Why a ‘GEMS Education’?
For over 50 years, GEMS Education has approached its
educational offering from a unique perspective.
We believe that a quality education is about Ad Vitam
Paramus - ‘preparing for life’. The GEMS approach to
learning is one which focuses not only on academic
excellence but also in helping students develop their
character, creativity, values, personal leadership and the
spirit of enterprise necessary for them to achieve their
full potential as global citizens and leaders of the future.
We believe that a high quality education, with an
international outlook, is critical in an increasingly
competitive global environment. ‘Globalisation’ maybe
the catch-phrace of today but we have acknowledged
its impact for decades, and prepared our students
accordingly.
GEMS Education’s multi-faceted approach to learning
prepares students for the rigours of higher learning and
equips them with the skills and versatility they require
for professional employment.
GEMS values-driven education is expressed through our
four core values which are woven into every curricula
offered by GEMS Schools and are at the core of our DNA.
They are not symbolic, we live and breathe them. We
encourage independent learning, empowering students
to take on responsibility. Through our values our
students become confident, tolerant, resilient people of
integrity, capable of both leadership and compassion.
Through our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives,
GEMS students also develop a social conscience. They
are taught the values and responsibilities needed to
become Through our CSR initiatives, GEMS students also
develop a social conscience. They are taught the values
and responsibilities needed to become active members
of the community, something which the modern world
is desperate for.
GEMS Core Values
Academics
Over the last four years alone, GEMS students have been accepted into 590 universities in 41 countries. Graduating GEMS students have been accepted by some of the most prestigious universities and colleges around the world. GEMS students have gone to 12 out of the top 15 universities in the world and 36 of the top 50 universities in the U.S. Over the past six years alone, GEMS students have won over 700 international, regional and local awards for academics, sports and the arts. Furthermore, all our schools significantly exceed all national and international benchmarks in student outcomes.
Philanthropy – Schools with a conscience
Through GEMS four core values GEMS schools are heavily focused on philanthropy. They are schools with a conscience. Each has their own charitable activities that fall under the Varkey GEMS Foundation. Students are taught the real meaning of compassion.
For every student enrolled at a GEMS School one hundred underprivileged children will be impacted. The foundation’s aim is to support 10 million children globally. We are humbled and honoured to have former U.S President Bill Clinton as the honorary Chair of the Varkey GEMS Foundation.
We are proud to say that over the past 50 years, GEMS students, teaching staff and corporate staff have raised
over US$ 40 million for charities around the world.
GEMS International Schools
The sheer diversity of nationalities in GEMS International schools provides students with a unique international understanding through interaction and by studying and experiencing other cultures and belief systems. This global cross cultural experience is extended further through a special initiative where GEMS students are linked via video-conferences to students in non-GEMS schools around the globe.
GEMS provides education to students in Europe, Africa, North America, Asia and the Middle East. Many GEMS parents are aspirational, career minded professionals so the GEMS network of schools provides parents with the opportunity to transfer their children from one GEMS school to another as their circumstances change.
Through our global network of award winning schools GEMS Education is providing a high quality holistic education to over 110,000 students from 151 countries. GEMS employs over 11,000 education professionals, specialists and staff from 80 countries.
Education Expertise
GEMS has selected a team of world renowned educators to ensure it delivers global best practice in the field of education. These include leaders who have excelled in education reform, curriculum development and teaching and learning practices. They are unequalled in international experience and include individuals who have established schools all over the world.
All GEMS teachers have access to the GEMS Professional
Development Programme which is one of the largest,
most comprehensive in-house programmes of its type
in the world. Over 150 senior academics are trained in
international accreditation, inspection methodologies
and school self evaluation.
Advisors
GEMS Education is supported by a network of eminent
international advisors which include world leaders and
experts who are “game-changers” and influencers on the
global stage. GEMS Education has strategic partnerships
with the Clinton Global Initiative, the Tony Blair Faith
Foundation, the World Economic Forum and Microsoft.
Parent Engagement
GEMS is also leading the world by becoming the first
educational organisation of its type to introduce a parent
engagement strategy into all its schools. International
research is clear: the biggest single reason a child does
well in their education is when their parents take a real,
active and consistent interest in what they are learning
in school at home. Research suggests that a parent who
is actively and consistently engaged with their child
can add the equivalent of two to three years of extra
education to that student over a school career. When
parents are engaged children get better grades, have
fewer discipline problems and are more likely to be
successful in their lives.
