NEW DELHI, (IANS) Girls love to dress up and look their best but in the hot and humid season the skin loses its shine and needs toning and refreshment. To counter the harmful effects of the heat and humidity on the skin, one should use watermelon juice or used tea bags on the eyes like eye pads, says beauty and hair expert Shahnaz Husain who has shared tips to look fabulous on the any festival or special occasion: * Use watermelon juice: Watermelon juice is a good skin toner and relieves dryness too. It cools, refreshes and softens the skin. Apply on the face and wash off with plain water after 20 minutes of application. * Fruit mask for all skin types: Fruits like banana, apple, papaya and orange can be mixed together and applied on the face. Keep it on your face for 20-30 minutes. Then wash off with water. It cools the skin, cleanses dead cells and removes tan. * Cooling mask: Mix cucumber juice with two teaspoons powdered milk and one egg white into a smooth paste. Apply on face and neck and rinse off with water after half an hour. * Mask for oily skin: Mix one tablespoon Multani Mitti with rose water into a paste and apply on the face. Wash off when dry. After applying face mask, take two of the cotton wool pads soaked in rose water and use them as eye pads. Squeeze out the rose water and then apply on closed lids. Lie down and relax, while you have the mask and eye pads on. * Used tea bags can also do the trick. Soak them in a little warm water, squeeze out the water and apply on the eyes like eye pads. * To soften rough, bushy or frizzy hair: Mix some water with creamy hair conditioner and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the hair. Then comb the hair, so that it spreads through the hair. * Raksha Bandhan is usually celebrated during the day. Daytime make-up has to be light and carefully done. If you have a clear skin, leave out foundation. * Eye make-up: For eye make-up stick to eye pencils during the day. Or line your eyelids with brown or gray eye shadow. This gives a softer effect. Then, apply only one or two coats of mascara, which helps to make the eyes look darker and brighter, but prevents the "heavily made-up" look. * Lipstick: For lipstick, avoid very dark colours, like dark maroon. Go for light pastel colours, pink, mauve, light browns, copper or bronze. The colours should not be too intense. Or, use only lip gloss. First outline the lips with a lip pencil, same shade as your lipstick. Fill in colour with a lipstick brush. Obviously outlined lips are out of fashion. * Try new hairstyles: like putting up your hair with fancy hair clips or ribbons. Wearing flowers in the hair can be quite alluring. Long hair is very much the trend, with cascading waves or curly and bouncy hair. Go for the softer look, with curls or natural waves, in the lower half of the hair. Beware! Incense smoke may be as bad as cigarette smokeBEIJING, (IANS) Burning incense at home may put your health atgreat risk including cancer as the pleasant smell from incense smokecontains cer tain par ticles that are more toxic than those found incigarettes, warns a new study.Incense burning is a traditional and common practice in many fami-lies and in most temples in India and other par ts of Asia. It is not onlyused for religious purposes, but also because of its pleasant smell.During the burning process, par ticle matter is released into the air."Clearly, there needs to be greater awareness and management of thehealth risks associated with burning incense in indoor environments,"said lead researcher Rong Zhou from South China University of Tech-nology in Guangzhou. The researchers assessed the health hazardsassociated with using incense smoke in the home and compared theresults for the first time with mainstream studies of cigarette smoke.

They tested incense scented with agarwood and sandalwood, whichare among the most common ingredients used to make this product.Tests on animals showed that incense smoke contains chemical prop-er ties that could potentially change genetic material such as DNA,and therefore cause mutations. It was also more cytotoxic and genotoxic than the cigarette used in thestudy. This means that incense smoke is potentially more toxic to acell, and especially to its genetic contents, the researchers noted.Mutagenics, genotoxins and cytotoxins have all been linked to thedevelopment of cancers. Taken together, the incense smoke samplescontained 64 compounds. While some of these are irritants or areonly slightly harmful (hypotoxic), ingredients in two of the samplesare known to be highly toxic. The study was published in Springer'sjournal Environmental Chemistry Letters.

AMERICAN POWERLIFTER MARK HENRY DURING A PROGRAMME IN NEW DELHI (IANS).

LONDON, (IANS) Eating high-levels of cer tain proteins found inmeat and plant-based foods can lower blood pressure and ar te-rial stiffness leading to better hear t health, a study has found.Eating foods rich in amino acids - building blocks of proteins -could be as good for your hear t as stopping smoking or physicalexercise - researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA)found."Increasing intake from protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, dairy produce, beans, lentils, broccoli and spinach could be animpor tant and readily achievable way to reduce people's risk ofcardiovascular disease," explained lead researcher Dr AmyJennings from UEA's Norwich Medical School. This research shows a protective effect of several amino acidson cardiovascular health. The magnitude of the association is similar to those previouslyrepor ted for lifestyle risk factors including salt intake, physicalactivity, alcohol consumption and smoking.Researchers investigated the effect of seven amino acids oncardiovascular health among almost 2,000 healthy women. Theyfound strong evidence that those who consumed the highestamounts of amino acids had lower measures of blood pressureand ar terial stiffness. The food source was impor tant. A higher intake of amino acidsfrom plant-based sources was associated with lower blood pres-sure and a higher intake from animal sources associated withlower levels of ar terial stiffness. "Beneficial daily amounts equateto a 100 gram salmon fillet or a 500 ml glass of skimmed milk,"Jennings added in a paper appeared in the Journal of Nutrition. The finding that eating cer tain meat and plant proteins are linkedto healthier blood pressure is an exciting finding. "We need tounderstand the mechanism to see if it is direct or via our gutmicrobes," said professor Tim Spector from the depar tment ofTwin Research at King's College London.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Most women working in male-dominating occu-pations are prone to high levels of stress that can trigger poor healthin them, a study has found. Negative workplace social climates en-countered by women in male-dominated occupations may be linkedto later negative health outcomes for these women, the researchersfrom Indiana University noticed."We find that women are more likely to experience exposure to highlevels of interpersonal, workplace stressors," said Bianca Manago, doctoral student in sociology. Chronic exposure to social stressors isknown to cause vulnerability to disease and mor tality throughdysregulation of the human body's stress response.Manago and Cate Taylor, assistant professor of sociology and genderstudies, by analysed the levels of stress hormone called cortisol inwomen in occupations that were made up of 85 per cent or more men.Cor tisol levels naturally fluctuates through the day but people with

high levels of interpersonal stress exposure have different patterns offluctuation than people exposed to more average levels of stress.

Omega-3 supplements offerno benefit for brain healthNEW YORK, (IANS) Debunking earlier research that adiet high in omega-3 fatty acids can protect brain health,a large clinical trial in the US has found that omega-3supplements will not slow cognitive decline in olderpeople. The team from the US National Institutes ofHealth (NIH) followed 4,000 patients over a five-yearperiod to reach this conclusion."Contrary to popular belief, we did not see any benefit ofomega-3 supplements for stopping cognitive decline," saidEmily Chew, deputy director of the Division of Epidemiol-ogy and Clinical Applications and deputy clinical directorat the National Eye Institute (NEI), par t of NIH.Omega-3 fatty acids are made by marine algae and areconcentrated in fish oils. These are believed to beresponsible for the health benefits associated withregularly eating fish such as salmon and tuna. Wherestudies have surveyed people on their dietary habits andhealth, they've found that regular consumption of fish isassociated with lower rates of age-related maculardegeneration (AMD), cardiovascular disease and possi-bly dementia. "We have seen data that eating foods withomega-3 may have a benefit for eye, brain and hear thealth," Dr Chew added. In par ticipants, 72 year old onaverage and suffering from early or intermediate AMD, DrChew and her team investigated the possible cognitivebenefits of omega-3 supplements.

LONDON, (IANS) Shedding emotional tears, an ability only humansare bestowed with, can improve mood over time, new research sug-gests. "Yes, a good cry indeed might go a long way to make you feelbetter," said study lead author Asmir Gracanin from University ofTilburg in the Netherlands. Very little is known about the function ofcrying. While some researchers see it as a cry for support, comfor tor help, others believe the main role of crying is to relieve emotions. For this study, researchers videotaped a group of 60 par ticipantswhile watching the emotionally charged films La vita e bella andHachi: A Dog's Tale. Both the films are known to be tearjerkers. Im-mediately afterwards, the 28 par ticipants who cried and the 32 whodid not shed a tear were asked how they felt. They also had to ratetheir moods 20 and 90 minutes later. As expected, the mood of thenon-criers was unchanged and unaffected immediately after seeingthe films. The mood of the criers, on the other hand, was distinctivelylow and even took a dip. Within 20 minutes, however, their mood hadreturned to the level reported before the screening. Finally, after 90minutes, the criers repor ted even a better mood than was the casebefore the films star ted. "After the initial deterioration of mood follow-

ing crying, it takes some time for the mood not only to recover butalso to be lifted above the levels at which it had been before theemotional event," Gracanin explained. The study was published in theSpringer's journal Motivation and Emotion.

PASSION FOR JOB CAN BE CULTIVATED

WRESTLER SANGRAM SINGH DURING THE LAUNCH OF WOH PADHEGI. WOH BADHEGI, A CAMPAIGN FOR GIRL'S EDUCATION TO BEAIRED ON STAR PLUS (IANS).

NEW YORK, (IANS) If you are not happy with what you are doing for aliving, do not be quick to give up as researchers say passion too canbe cultivated and you may well enjoy the very job you earlier dis-liked. The findings offer assurance to those who have not - or have yet- to find what they are passionate about: If you can not discover yourpassion, you can learn to develop it."We can choose to change our beliefs or strategies to cultivate pas-sion gradually or seek compatibility from the outset, and be just aseffective in the long run at achieving this coveted experience," saidthe study's lead author Patricia Chen, doctoral psychology student atUniversity of Michigan in the US.The dominant mentality is the belief that passion is attained throughfinding a fit with the right line of work, or "following one's passion". Analternative mindset is that passion can be cultivated over time as onegains competence in a line of work. Researchers examined people'sexpectations, choices and outcomes associated with each of thesetwo mindsets - termed as the "fit theory" and "develop theory".They found that both mentalities are similarly effective at achieving

vocational well-being. People with the fit theory tend to select voca-tions that they enjoy from the outset - an indication of compatibilitythat is impor tant to them.

Natural surroundings helpmen get adequate sleepNEW YORK, (IANS) Living near a park or a sandy beach and anocean view can help people - especially men and those whoare above 65 - sleep better, new research has found. "This newstudy shows that exposure to a natural environment may helppeople get the sleep they need," said one of the researchersDiana Grigsby-Toussaint, professor at University of Illinois inthe US. The study surveyed 255,171 US adults, to learn whetherthere was an association between self-repor ted days of insuf-ficient sleep and access to green space. "Interestingly, acrossthe entire sample, individuals repor ting 21 to 29 days of insuf-ficient sleep consistently had lower odds of access to greenspace and natural amenities compared to those repor ting lessthan one week," she said. For men, the relationship betweensleep and exposure to green space was much stronger than forwomen. And males and females 65 and over found nature to bea potent sleep aid, she pointed out. Living near green land-scapes is associated with higher levels of physical activity andthat exercise in turn predicts beneficial sleep patterns, Grigsby-Toussaint explained.
