The Official Languages Programs (Explore and Odyssey) www.myodyssey.ca / www.myexplore.ca The Odyssey Language Assistant Program is a paid, professional work experience that involves travelling in another province or territories in Canada to work with students for nine months. Language assistants work in a Canadian school in a community where they share their language and culture, helping students develop their fluency in either English or French. Odyssey is an opportunity to dive deep into another language and culture while sharing your own; travel and explore Canada; earn an income and get bilingual professional experience. Candidates with a passion for languages, working with children/youth, and helping others learn while having fun are ideal applicants. Candidates can come from any academic background. The Explore program is a five-week French-immersion bursary program that is offered during the spring or summer for people with any skill level in French. Explore participants are awarded a $2,200 bursary that covers tuition fees for the course, instructional materials, meals, and accommodation. Approximately 2,000 bursaries are given in Ontario every year. You will discover another region of Canada while learning French! One program that will be highlighted furing the Get Experience Fair is the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP). HELP is a delirium and functional decline prevention program. Patients aged 70 and older that are in the hospital have an increase in confusion, delirium and functional decline. Through the HELP program, specially trained volunteers visit patients, engage them in conversation to assist with orientation, engage the patients in leisure activities to increase congitive functioning and lead the patients in range of motion exercises to promote physical strengthening. Tutoring involves clarifying and teaching subject matter, as well as assessing the student’s knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis. Thousands of seniors benefit from our long-term care, senior housing, medical and rehabilitation services and community-based programs every day.
