In Australia during the 19th century, fortunes were made on the sheep’s back and Geelong’s history has been intertwined with the wool industry since its earliest days.
The establishment of stately homes, huge woolstores and soaring churches to support the flourishing industry and its beneficiaries have created an impressive city on Corio Bay.
The birthplace of Ford Australia, Geelong is home to the Ford Discovery Centre with interactive displays and a collection of antique and contemporary cars.
The Geelong Gallery is one of the best regional galleries in Australia and Geelong’s traditional Botanic Gardens has recently doubled in size and now features a 21st century twist designed with the Australian dry climate conditions in mind.
The National Wool Museum is housed in a restored 1872 woolstore building and tells the affectionate history of Australia’s wool industry and the human endeavour involved in its production and refinement.
At Buckley Falls near Fyansford, the tale of the encounter of two unfamiliar individuals is recalled. William Buckley was an escaped convict who was saved by the local Kooris in the early 1800s. He fished with the tribe at the falls and it was one of the first sites he showed to the new European settlers who arrived in the region in 1835.
The bollard walking trail along the Geelong foreshore allows visitors to discover over 100 sculptured bollards that tell the affectionate story of the city’s past and present, including dapper young ladies in neck-to-knee bathing costumes, 1930s lifesavers, a Geelong footballer, jaunty sailors, fishermen and a town band.
At Eastern Beach in Geelong is a grand relic of early 20th century social and recreational customs – a fully restored 1930s seabathing complex. It includes an enclosed seabath, children’s pool, change rooms, cafe and restaurant.

With a distinctive blend of major retailers and independent specialty shops, Geelong is a great place to indulge your shopping addiction. Extensive shopping complexes in the city centre are home to leading chains and department stores. In the laneways and precincts around Geelong, you will find fashion boutiques, funky accessories as well as a range of unique gifts and homewares.
The Geelong area is constantly evolving with a number of developments including The Edgewater complex that has substantially increased the food and wine on offer at the waterfront.
The Moorabool Valley, a sub region of Victoria’s renowned Geelong Wine Region is located to the north, nestled between Geelong and Ballarat. The Moorabool Valley represents one of Australia’s finest cool climate wine regions with a fast growing reputation for boutique wineries producing premium hand crafted wines.
Visit Moorabool Valley and sample the wide range of classic and alternative wines and discover how the talented winemakers turn tough climate into superior wines.
eastern BeachBuilt in the 1930’s, the art deco swimming enclosure at Eastern Beach is a favourite with locals for walking on a warm evening and is a must do while visiting Geelong. There is a swimming area with a large tower and diving boards and a separate children’s pool that is enclosed and paved. On the shore, there are large areas of lawn for picnics and a fantastic adventure playground for the children including plenty of spectator seats for the grown ups. Facilities include toilets and dressing rooms and the beach is patrolled by lifesavers during summer.
Pakington StreetPakington Street (or ‘Pako’ to locals) runs through Newtown and Geelong West and has a vibrant mix of fashion stores, giftware, specialty stores, gourmet groceries, coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and trendy bars making a cosmopolitan mix of shopping and eating out.
The WaterfrontStretching from Eastern Beach around to Rippleside, the area includes restaurants, cafes, playgrounds and open grassy areas for the kids to play. Other attractions include the carousel, miniature train ride and a skate park. With events throughout the year and the fabulous attractions and places to eat, the Geelong Waterfront is a must do!
Geelong Walking ToursTwo hour guided walking tours are available to key attractions, the arts precinct and the stunning Waterfront. The walk costs $12, includes morning or afternoon tea and departs from the National Wool Museum, corner of Brougham and Moorabool Streets. Bookings are essential – phone 5244 7102.

national Wool MuseumThe National Wool Museum is Australia’s only comprehensive museum of wool, showcasing wool’s enduring impact on Australia’s social and economic life. With a brief to explore the past, present and future of the Australian wool industry, the Museum acquires, documents, preserves, stores and exhibits objects and materials directly related to and which reflect significant developments in the Australian wool industry.
Appropriately located in a century old (1872) refurbished bluestone wool store, the Museum uses unique objects and innovative displays to tell the story of the Australian wool industry from early settlement to the present day.
The Museum has two permanent galleries. The first, “The Wool Harvest”, looks at sheep farming and wool production. Exploring the pastoral aspect of wool in Australia, visitors can follow the path of the fleece through shearing, classing, wool pressing and dispatch.
The second gallery, “From Fleece to Fabric”, looks at the processing of wool into fabric and offers an insight into the people and processes involved in the textile industry. Central to the Museum experience is the 1910 built Axminster Jacquard carpet loom with daily demonstrations by the Museum’s skilled carpet weavers show how the loom works.
The Museum also has an exciting annual calendar of temporary exhibitions and events. The Museum is fully wheel chair accessible and there are accessible parking spaces located directly in front of the Museum.

A short drive from Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula offers the best of coast and country. The undulating hills are ideal for growing the cool climate wines that the region is famous for, and the region is surrounded by stunning bay and ocean coastline.
Steeped in history, Queenscliff has an air of elegance and impressive Victorian era heritage. Queenscliff has family friendly beaches, great galleries, fabulous shopping, stunning grand hotels and a wonderful range of delicious cafes and restaurants.
To add to Queenscliff’s heritage atmosphere, vintage steam trains run to and from Drysdale on weekends and public holidays. Victoria’s defence heritage is on display at Fort Queenscliff. Built in 1885 to guard the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, the Fort is now open for tours on weekends and holidays.
Nearby Point Lonsdale has some delightful cafes and eateries along the main street. At the end of Point Lonsdale Rd, there is a lookout with panoramic views of the notorious ‘Rip’ – the narrow and treacherous body of water where the calm of Port Phillip Bay meets the wilder waters of Bass Strait.
The southern side of the Bellarine Peninsula faces Bass Strait, making for great surf at the beaches along this stretch of coast. Ocean Grove beach is ideal for a surf, a swim or a stroll. The foreshore areas in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads have great walking tracks, BBQ and picnic facilities. The Ocean Grove area is a retail hub with a great range of shops in the main street and nearby centres, as well as fantastic restaurants and cafes to suit every taste.

The Bellarine Taste TrailThe Bellarine Taste Trail comprises of a selection of food producers and farm-gates, provedores, countless cafes and restaurants, a microbrewery, cellar doors and accommodation. In a unique twist to the ‘gourmet trail’ idea, the trail also incorporates local seafood businesses, which has long been one of the region’s most notable strong points. From mussels and pub meals, to blueberries and bakeries, you are bound to find a taste to suit even the fussiest of eaters. The Official Bellarine Touring Map has been released and includes information on the Bellarine Taste Trail! You can pick up a Bellarine Taste Trail tear off map at any of the outlets on the trail or visit the website.
For more information, please visit: www.thebellarinetastetrail.com.au
Barwon Heads is on the mouth of the Barwon River and was the location for the ABC television series ‘Seachange’. Fans of the program will recognise some of the sites, including the bridge and Diver Dan’s shed (which is now a waterside restaurant) or could even stay in Laura’s House, which is part of the caravan park’s coastal accommodation. Barwon Heads is central to three excellent golf courses, some of the best beaches in Victoria and has fantastic eateries – it’s a great spot for a seachange of your own!
The charming bayside village of Portarlington boasts safe swimming beaches and views across Port Phillip Bay to the skyline of Melbourne. In the waters just offshore, most of Australia’s supply of mussels is grown and harvested.
On weekends, fresh mussels can be purchased direct from the boat at the Portarlington Pier. If you’d rather let someone else do the hard work, local restaurants specialise in mussels, which are best served with a glass of local wine. Portarlington is central to the best wineries the region has to offer.
The Bellarine Peninsula produces some of Australia’s best wine in some of the most stunning locations. Many of the vineyards have spectacular views across the vines to Port Phillip Bay. And whilst the views are breathtaking, they’d be pointless if the wine wasn’t so good! The winery operators in the region are passionate and dedicated, with much of the process completed by hand to ensure character and quality. So tour the region and taste for yourself – straight from the winemakers’ hands to yours.
