Gearbox CSI: Forensic Analysis of Gear & Bearing Failures —
Useful Tools For Optimizing Gearbox DesignPresented by: AGMA, AGMA Foundation, Raymond Drago, P.E. & Joseph W. Lenski, Jr., Drive Systems Technology, Inc.
November 7-9, 2007 • Clearwater, Florida
Gearbox ailures are not always related to predictedB-10 bearing lie and gear service actor calculations.Forensic analyses o gear and bearing ailures show that
only a ew o these ailures are the result o true atigue (B-10or basic gear rating). Many ailures, although atigue in basicorigin, are the result o other contributing actors, oten o suchmagnitude that they overshadow the basic gear and bearingrating considerations. Tereore, careul evaluation o the resultso orensic analysis must be given in the design o gearboxes toachieve the best gear and bearing perormance possible. Forensicanalysis has become an important gearbox designer’s tool.
Te objective o this seminar is to provide a better understandingo various types o gears and bearings and educate the designer
with the limitation and capabilities o rolling element bearingsand the gears that they support, so that the designer can properly
apply the best gear - bearing combination to any gearbox, whether simple or complex. Bearings come in various types, sizesand congurations. Selecting the best bearing to optimize theoverall gearbox design may not be possible unless we know how to take advantage o each conguration and apply the results o orensic analysis o past ailures.
Understanding gearbox bearing ailures is critical in eliminatingthem in uture designs. Forensic analysis will determine theroot cause and then the designer must determine what has tobe done to eliminate this root cause in uture designs. Some o the cures are very basic, while others require extensive eorts toincorporate the corrective measures into gearbox design. Tis
approach is very important in optimizing the gearbox to achievethe best perormance o both gear and bearings.
Actual data based upon the presenter’s own gear design orthe application and rolling element bearing experience willbe presented. Te presentation is illustrated with numerousphotographs and many case study synopses are discussed toprovide real world examples o both ailures and preventativemeasures based on an understanding o the ailures.
In addition to being colleagues or more than 40 years, theseminar leaders have had the great privilege o working directly together as an integrated “bearing/gear team.” Tis experienceranges rom aircrat and space vehicles (including a wide variety o helicopters, xed wing aircrat and space vehicles includingthe Space Shuttle and Atlas Rocket) to automotive andconsumer products (such as mixers, electric tooth brushes, etc.),through heavy industrial equipment (steel and aluminum milldrive systems, mining applications, printing presses, etc.). Learnrom this experience to minimize your problems and maximize
your successes in uture gearbox bearing designs. It is our belie that a good gearbox designer is only as good as his or her “bag otricks!” Join us and ll your personal bag o tricks.
