Living Statue

If you’re looking for a show description for a living statue and this program was your only resource, then I have bad news...

CAST Daniel Anderson

How many years have you been with the Fringe Festival?

Over the years, I’ve been a technician and an assistant to various artists, as well as the Venue Technical Director, so I’d say about 10 years. It ’s been a while!

How has the Festival changed in those ten years?

The Festival is definitely more digitized. There used to be a thing we called “T.O.A.D. boards,” the acronym meaning tickets only at the door. It was cash only and was usually a mad rush. There are lots of familiar faces who used to be around who’ve travelled across the country and have come and gone. Other details have been added for convenience, but the energy is still the same – which is exciting.

Tell us about being the Venue Technical Director.

It ’s fun. You get to work with hundreds and hundreds of artists. For many, you’re the first point of contact once they arrive at the Festival. It ’s exciting.

Half the reason I love being a Technical Director is solving specific problems. And we get to solve hundreds of problems that help artists realize their best work.

What’s the most bizarre thing you’ve had to deal with?

Ongoing requests for live animals on stage. What happens if your pigeon doesn’t want to come down from the lighting grid? What happens then?

If you could give advice to new artists starting out on the Fringe circuit, what would it be?

You don’t need more than one sofa, maybe you don’t need one at all. Pack lightly. Simplify.

If a technician tells you to do something, there’s a reason for it – it will help your show. Technicians have this horrible reputation for being grumpy, hard to get along with people who live in the dark. But honestly, by the end of a summer when I was a technician, I would have seen between 300 and 400 shows. I’ve seen a lot. I can help you make your show better.

You have the reputation for being “The Fixer” around Fringe. What does that mean?

I ran away from theatre for six years and became a heavy-duty mechanic. When I came back into the fold of theatre, I had all of these skills I didn’t think would translate. But suddenly I was being called in to help fix electrical issues and refrigeration – especially beer fridges, we cannot have a beer fridge that doesn’t work!

There is always something – props fail and vehicles always seem to have an issue – so it turns out the skills have been an awesome asset.

What are you looking forward to at this Festival?

I love the artists. I always look forward to working with them. The volunteers are great, too. And working one on one with my staff. I really enjoy working with the people who make this Festival happen.

How will you live large at this year’s Fringe Festival?

One of my favourite things to do during the Festival is to sit back and watch the 100,000+ people that are on site at any given point in time. The stuff you see is fantastic. Once we’ve done our job as staff, it ’s amazing just to watch people embrace the Festival.
