Addressing enterprise-wide challengesBuilt on a common technology platform and leveraging industry standards, Centricity Solutions for Enterprise Imaging offer a modular, yet integrated, solution suite approach to unify imaging data.

But it’s not enough to just look at solutions for radiology. True enterprise imaging has to cross departments. That’s why Centricity Solutions for Enterprise Imaging delivers a full suite of solutions to address the unique needs of multiple care pathways, including: Acute Imaging, Ambulatory Imaging, Women’s Health Imaging, Oncology Imaging, Centricity Cardio Enterprise1 for cardiology, and the Omnyx® Precision Solution™ for digital pathology — delivered by Omnyx, a GE Healthcare and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) joint venture.2

The four key components of Enterprise ImagingWhether an organization is a small regional or community hospital or a large IDN, to reap the rewards of enterprise imaging, we believe there are four critical pieces. An organization may decide to tackle them all at once or may choose to start with only one of the components; the four include:

91.4% of CIOs said patient experience and cost containment are their most important imaging priorities.3

1 GE Healthcare and ITG Market Research | April 2015.2 Radiologists’ Burden of Inefficiency Using Conventional Imaging Workstations, Dr. Bruce Hillman and Dr. Bhavik Pandya, Journal of the American College of Radiology. November 2013.

Display 2D, 3D and 4D images from multiple specialties on a common viewer with analyticsCustomers list improving efficiency and care delivery as two of the most important outcomes that an IT system must deliver for imaging departments.1 Studies also show that in the multi-system environment deployed in many institutions today, radiologists can spend up to 19% of each day going between different systems and workstations to obtain all the information needed to finalize a case.2

Once orders are received and images are acquired, radiologists and cardiologists use visualization tools to read the images, review current clinical data and compare them to prior exams and prior patient history in order to deliver a diagnosis and recommend treatment options. After exams are read, clinicians use visualization tools to review the exam and the report, either through the EMR, physician portal or through direct access to the imaging systems. By consolidating multiple systems into a single workstation, incorporating workload management tools and delivering access to images from multiple care areas, clients can save real time, helping to improve report turnaround time, increase the number of studies that can be read in a day and improve access to care providers throughout the enterprise and the community.

Unify patient data stored in disparate systems for enterprise-wide accessStandards based vendor-neutral archiving strategy is critical to consolidating silos of patient data and delivering a unified patient record at point of care. By 2019 healthcare providers will spend up to $3.7B1 in deploying vendor neutral archiving and image exchange solutions. Why such an investment? Because deployment of a vendor neutral archiving solution can help reduce infrastructure costs by up to 30%2 and duplicate imaging and tests by up to 32%3 while simultaneously image-enabling EMRs and supporting collaborative care delivery objectives.

GE Healthcare IT’s archiving solutions provide a standards based vendor neutral archiving and viewing solution for simplified content management and distribution across the collaborative care network. With easy access to patient history, distributed care teams can now stay informed throughout the diagnosis and treatment planning process. At the same time, interoperability standards helps enhance clinicians’ productivity by allowing access to a longitudinal patient record through their choice of EMRs, physician portals or RIS systems. While consolidation of disparate archive systems helps alleviate the burden of costly maintenance and upgrades, it also helps reduce the total cost of managing data, while supporting efficient utilization of IT resources and personnel.

GE Healthcare IT SolutionsUnlocking the Value of Healthcare IT

Delivering actionable insights that create valueWhat does value mean in today’s healthcare environment? At GE Healthcare IT, we define it as improved patient outcomes… delivered at the same or lower cost. To realize true value, you need both – optimizing productivity at the same time you’re eliminating waste from the system.

And this is where IT plays a pivotal role in healthcare. In the US, 30% to 40% of all healthcare spend = waste1. That’s $1.3 trillion each year!1 IT systems and software can play a key role. If 25% of the waste was eliminated with the use of IT, that would be a $300 billion annual improvement.1

There are significant gaps and missing capabilities that are preventing healthcare systems from realizing full returns on their IT investments.

These gaps are in the areas of:

    • Enhancing diagnostic speed & confidence

    • Connecting care pathways efficiently

    • Enabling management of chronic disease

    • Improving health system profitability

    • Optimizing the workforce These areas are the premise for GE Healthcare IT’s holistic portfolio of integrated care solutions, a portfolio that encompasses software, services and partners.

Focusing on both opportunties facilitates the right diagnosis the first time, the right clinician available at the right time, patient’s health data travels with them along the care pathway, and ultimately billing and collecting accurately for all the services you deliver.

Centricity Universal Viewer with Intelligent Tools

    Adaptive streaming engine

The adaptive streaming engine achieves rapid image display by adjusting for network conditions, device compute power, and image compression to provide the most efficient way to deliver images. It responds rapidly to user actions to prioritize images most likely to be displayed next by the user, and uses progressive image quality if needed to optimize the user experience. It provides a number of capabilities that include the following:

    • Responds rapidly to user actions to prioritize images most likely to be displayed nextby the user

    • Uses progressive image quality to display lossy image and convert it to lossless, ifneeded, to optimize the user experience

    • Applies progressive image display to both still and cine images to enhance productivity

    • Transmits patient and study information using SSL encryption

    RADIOLOGY

    BACK TO RADIOLOGY

Smart Reading ProtocolsA standard feature of Centricity Universal Viewer, Smart Reading Protocols (SRP) represents a different way for radiologists to create hanging protocols and improve image setup efficiency.

In contrast to traditional hanging protocol functions available with PACS software, SRP does not require the user to set up hanging protocol rules that anticipate a multitude of scenarios, exam types and procedure information. During the normal review process, radiologists hang images based on their preferences and simply “teach” the system using a one-click learning feature. The next time the radiologist opens an exam of a similar type, SRP automatically applies the previous learnings to “hang” the image to the specified preference.

Using a set of machine-learning algorithms, SRP makes inferences and hanging recommendations based on preferences that it learns from the users. The data associated with an exam that is evaluated by the SRP engine is extensive and includes up to 40 data elements, more than traditional hanging protocol configurators. It includes the DICOM header, HL7 information, physical monitor configurations and user data. SRP uses ontologies to make sense of this information. Its ontologies are available in Brazilian Portuguese, English for the U.S. and U.K., Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

Smart Reading Protocols have the ability to learn user preferences for MIP/MPR and embedded advanced applications.

    RADIOLOGY

Centricity Universal Viewer with Advanced VisualizationUnlike disparate PACS and 3D systems, Centricity Universal Viewer helps to increase efficiency by simplifying information access with a single image repository across 2D and 3D studies, enabling holistic oncology and other specialty workflows, with easy access to prior exams.

Advanced tools in a single solution Centricity Universal Viewer provides an enhanced user experience for advanced visualization. It offers a single source of applications and toolset for multiple modalities and care areas, with native applications for MIP/MPR and PET-CT and enhanced solutions for vessel analysis, automated bone removal, integrated registration, oncology tools, lung and colon analysis, CT perfusion and others.

The embedded advanced applications decrease the need to log in to multiple applications and retrieve images for comparison from stand-alone “mini PACS” systems, allowing radiologists and clinicians to read exams more efficiently. This also helps increase IT productivity by reducing requests for DICOM resends and image moves between systems.

The embedded applications are combined with the system’s hanging protocols and the smart reading protocols to help reduce manual per-exam setup and support rapid reading. Preprocessed images are displayed on the monitor according to the radiologist’s preset specifications.

Centricity Universal Viewer offers a 3D Advantage package that is the starting point for the advanced applications. This package provides multi-modality tools used in the radiologist’s daily work that enable:

    • 3D visualization and processing capabilities for reading and comparing CT, MR, 3D X-ray, PET, PET/MR, and PET/CT datasets

    • Improved vessel visualization by removing obstructive bony detail

    • The capability to align and fuse two volumetric acquisitions from either the same or different acquisition modalities

It also offers a flexible business model that allows organizations to pay for this service based on their ongoing consumption. Simultaneously, it simplifies IT maintenance by reducing on-site infrastructure and offloading software updates, back-up operations and disaster recovery from internal staff, helping drive down capital expenses.

Centricity Clinical Archive with Media ManagerEvery picture tells a story. And when it comes to your patients, capturing and documenting visible light images at every step of the workflow helps provide vital details of their care journey. Media Manager enables speedy acquisition and documentation of pictures directly from mobile devices, reducing the documentation time per patient case, helping avoid missed patient data and enhancing staff productivity.

Media Manager offers intuitive patient barcode or MRN identification and initiates a guided workflow to document case attributes. Images in their native formats are automatically uploaded to the XDS repository which simplifies access to patient records, across the enterprise.

Today, wound care departments are challenged with speedy and detailed documentation of critical cases such as pressure ulcers. Manual entries and broken workflows can result in missed or erroneous information, which can further impact reimbursements and quality measures; not to mention the potential impact on clinical outcomes when complete patient record is not available at point of care. Media Manager’s intuitive workflow is designed to solve these challenges keeping your quality objectives top of mind – allowing you to document critical wound case attributes from the convenience of your mobile devices.

Media Manager was jointly developed with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)1.

    • Full support of PET Standard Uptake Value (SUV)

Additional specialized applications available are listed to the right.

It’s not enough to just have great software. Healthcare organizations today need comprehensive services to help ensure that they optimize their software investment. When you choose a Centricity Enterprise Imaging solution, you get access to a team of consultants and a portfolio of services that help you achieve optimum system performance and staff productivity.

At the start of your engagement, our team of consultants will help assess your imaging needs and review current state workflows, including images processed, physicians on site, exam and reporting turnaround times. Our consultants will help design an optimal workflow and configure your image management, archiving and visualization applications to meet your unique organizational requirements.

Our education consultants then help drive change across your enterprise and enhance utilization through training on new features and

functionality of your imaging solution. We have developed more than 80 radiology imaging informatics courses, tailored to specific roles, such as PACS System Administrator and Report Writer. We offer many of these courses as continuing education credits to help radiology technologists retain their registry status.

After your new enterprise imaging software deployment is up and running, GE Healthcare support services help you maintain your system performance through ongoing assessments, 24/7 technical support, and remote monitoring – which has helped some customers reduce the cost of outages by an average of $250K per year.1

Together, we find value across your software enterprise, develop insights to act on, and help you sustain success.
