As part of GE’s commitment to each of the past three olympic and Paralympic Games, we have provided a legacy gift to the local community. In London, this has taken the form of $8 million of healthcare equipment to a new neonatal unit at Homerton University Hospital to address the local challenge of high infant mortality rates for years to come.

GE has also refitted London’s iconic Tower Bridge with an energy-efficient lighting system that will save on running costs and allow for celebratory light shows.

GE's contribution to the London 2012 Games

Velodrome

The 6,000 capacity Velodrome will host cycling events. GE Power Controls has provided low-voltage switchgear for power distribution within the stadium, as well as Uninterruptable Power supplies (UPs) to protect the power for use during competition.

Olympic Stadium

GE Lighting has supplied 14,000 lamps for the 80,000 seat stadium. Uninterruptible Power supplies (UPs) and large, containerized switchgear which support the ceremonies and track and field events. In addition to the stadium GE’s temporary switchgear solution is being supplied to 17 olympic venues.

Olympic Village

during the olympic and Paralympic Games, a total of 23,000 athletes and officials will reside in the olympic Village. GE digital Energy is supplying smart meters to the residents with information about their energy use to help them control consumption and lower their carbon footprint. GE Power Controls are supplying some of the power distribution equipment to the residential apartments helping to power the Games. GE Water & Process Technologies are providing monitoring systems for storm run-off water at the Village.

Riverbank Arena

GE Lighting is supplying the architectural lighting scheme for the olympic Hockey Centre which will see the venue lit in LoCoG colours each night.

Energy Centre

The Energy Centre will provide power, heating and cooling systems for the Games and for the communities that will develop after the Games. GE Jenbacher co-generation technology is being used to power the Games. The 10 MW project is a cornerstone of London 2012’s goals to increase the use of alternative energy, water conservation and recycling strategies.

Aquatics Centre

The Zaha Hadid designed Aquatics Centre will host a number of the most popular events during the Games. GE digital Energy’s Uninterruptible Power supplies (UPs) are installed in the complex. The technology provides critical power protection for a number of applications.

Smart Meters

GE smart Meters and accompanying touch screen interactive display units will be installed in the athlete accommodation for the Games. The smart Meters will provide the Athletes' Village residents with the tools to make informed decisions about their energy use and control consumption to help lower their carbon footprint. The smart Meters will also provide important data for future Games as it will give a detailed understanding of electricity usage. The project will play an important role in understanding how the devices work in high-density, concrete and steel buildings ahead of a national roll-out of smart meters supported by the government.

Electric Vehicle charging

GE Energy services has supplied 120 durastation Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging stations across London. Charging points are installed at Westfield stratford shopping Centre, the olympic Park’s Main Press Centre, Hyde Park, Excel Centre and stratford International station. durastation enables electric vehicles to be used as part of London’s transportation infrastructure during the Games and beyond, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing noise pollution.

Power Protection

GE digital Energy’s Uninterruptable Power supplies (UPs) would allow the Games to continue in the event of power failure, and support the emergency lighting system. If there were a power-outage, UPs would serve as back-up to ensure a seamless, clean source of power. GE’s UPs is installed in the olympic stadium, Water Polo venue, Velodrome, Basketball and Handball Arenas and the Aquatics Centre, where it remains in legacy. nearly 100 GE digital Energy employees are responsible for delivering, monitoring and servicing this technology for the Games.

Design my break

As part of LoCoG’s Get set programme, GE introduced design my Break, a competition for school children to customize a “Gold Medal” mid-day break. This was aimed at boosting emotional well-being, as well as encouraging healthy eating, physical activity and celebrating the values of the olympic and Paralympic Games. The winning schools received trips to watch events at London 2012.

Aspiring Minds

The Aspiring Minds initiative, in partnership with the dame kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, used a trained group of olympic athletes and GE volunteers to help young people raise their aspirations in life. The programme offered activities around attitudes for success, teamwork and communication, target setting and goals, problem solving, risk taking, learning from mistakes and creative thinking.

International Inspiration

Working in countries all over the world, the International Inspiration programme, run by London organising Committee for the olympic and Paralympic Games (LoCoG), aims to use sport as a positive force to enrich the lives of over 12 million young people. The GE Foundation has made a $1 million donation to this programme, making a real difference to young people’s lives around the world.

HealthAhead Go for the Gold

Every year, employees take time out of their day to celebrate GE’s culture of health and make a commitment to their personal wellbeing. This year, we rallied employees through an olympic-themed challenge called “Go for the Gold” where we asked employees globally to help us reach a million kilometers through our shared fitness efforts over 10-days. Employees from 50 countries participated and logged 50,000 workouts totaling almost 1.2 million kilometers. In true olympic spirit , hundreds of employees posted comments supporting each other throughout the process.

Olympians Among Us

GE is immensely proud of its approximately 30 olympians – both current and former - who also happen to be GE employees. Their competitive spirit and commitment to teamwork are just a few of the qualities that they bring to work every day and contribute to GE’s success. More than half of these olympians recently joined GE as a result of our support of the International olympic Committee’s Athlete Career Program which aims to ensure athletes have a strong future following their sports careers.

Energy saving technologies

GE, in partnership with EdF, the Mayor of London, and the City of London Corporation, has recently refitted London’s iconic Tower Bridge with a state-of-the-art energy-efficient lighting system. London will enjoy benefits from the deal long after the Games, as the new lighting system will be in place for 25 years. Each night of the Games, GE and its partners are presenting light shows for the world to see.

40,000 pedestrians and motorists pass over Tower Bridge everyday,

and 3,500 walk under it .

opened 30 June 1894 by the future king Edward VII. When it was built , Tower Bridge was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever completed.

The framework was clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone to protect the underlying steelwork and provide a more pleasing appearance.

The bascules take about a minute to raise to their max angle of 86 degrees. raised over 18,000 times a year when first built , raised 100 times a year now.
