COURSE BREAKDOWN Topics will include:- The catering industry: Job roles- Health, safety & hygiene food preparation- Menu planning - Costing- Equipment- Communication environmental considerations

Content and Assessment:The course is divided into two parts:- 1 hour 15 minute exam worth 40%.- 2 practical tests worth 60%.

The practical examinations will take place during year 10 and year 11. For both practical assessments you will have to plan, carry out and evaluate your catering tasks.

INTRODUCTIONStudents who study this GCSE will gain insight into how childrendevelop, from pregnancy and birth through to early years. The course will also develop your knowledge about support for parents andchildren.

HOW CAN CHILD DEVELOPMENT HELP ME?This subject can help you to understand the biological andsociological changes before, during and after childbirth. You will also find out about caring for children including diet, hygiene and play. You will learn about the development of a child from 0-5 years and understand how play and toys support development. You will also gain insight into recognising childhood illness and the care of children who have special needs.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?This course is a useful introduction to careers in early yearspractice, midwifery, social work, health visiting and primary school teaching. The research and analysis skills taught on the course would be useful in any future career choice.

COURSE BREAKDOWN Students will study three units (60% Coursework, 40% Exam)

Unit One - Single tier exam (40%) Topics covered include:- Pregnancy- Parenthood- Care of a child- Child development services for children

Unit Two - Research project (20%)The research task is the smaller of the two controlledassessment units. It should be based on one of the following areas of the subject content:- Pregnancy- Parenthood- Diet- Health and care of the child- Support for the parent and child

Unit Three - Investigate the development of a child that you know (40%)This will involve observations of a single child, know to you,under 3 years old.

INTRODUCTIONGood nutrition and healthy lifestyles are essential to positive well-being. If you like cooking and want to learn about how nutrition and lifestyle choices can impact on the health of individuals, athletes and various populations, then this course will be suitable for you. Every week you will take part in a double practical lesson where you willconsider the science behind the food we eat.

INTRODUCTIONThis course allows you to design and make products with creativity and originality, using a variety of graphical and modelling materials such as card, paper, foam board, some plastics and Styrofoam. You will use a variety of techniques ranging from traditional drawing methods toextensive use of ICT equipment and software, including CAD/CAM. You will design and produce high quality graphical projects for marketing and advertising purposes. These could include promotional merchandise for music, sports, fashion and jewellery, cafes, restaurants andpromotion products for cinema/films.

HOW WILL GRAPHIC PRODUCTS HELP ME?Graphics is suitable for students with an interest in design and ICT. Other interests might include media, architecture, modelling/prototyping or graphical illustration.

The skills gained in graphics will increase your problem solving skills and you will learn how to develop solutions to practical challenges. You will gain skills and knowledge about everyday graphicalproducts and their materials and understand how they function. You will also have a wider knowledge about CAD/CAM and how to use it to produce high quality products in a variety of graphical media.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?A GCSE in graphics can lead to careers in graphic design, product design, interior design, desktop publishing, architecture andadvertising. A Level Product Design follows on from this course.

INTRODUCTIONDuring this course you will acquire knowledge and understanding ofdesigning and manufacturing in order to solve practical problems. Toaccompany this knowledge you will learn and develop new skills that will allow you to design and make a real 3D product that satisfies adesign brief. Products may be made from a wide range of materials in wood, metal or plastic and result in a final marketable, quality product.

HOW WILL RESISTANT MATERIALS HELP ME?The skills developed in resistant materials such as problem solving, decision making and communication are valued by colleges,industry and commerce. This course develops industrial andcommercial awareness as well as social responsibility.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?GCSE Resistant Materials can lead to careers in industrial design, manufacturing, graphic design, interior design, fine art, marketing, product design and development, engineering, mechanical, civil, automotive, aeronautical, architecture and furniture design. If you are considering a career in one of the above or A Level ProductDesign, then resistant materials is an excellent course for you.

COURSE BREAKDOWN There are two elements to the course:- Unit 1: A written examination 40%- Unit 2: A Coursework Design & Make Project 60%(controlled assessment)

Years 9 & 10 - You will learn about the three main materials: wood, metal and plastic. You will learn design andpresentation skills in order to communicate your ideaseffectively. You will learn CAD/CAM skills through using a range of specialist D&T ICT software and hardware. You will design and make three small products from wood, metal and plastic during Year 9 and a larger GCSE project at the start of year 10. Project choices can change each year to suit thenature of the students but have included: lamps/mood lights, laser-cut puzzle and storage containers, a themed bedside clock, motorised bugs, and a small media storage device to hold iPods / MP3s.

During Year 10 you will start your controlled assessment, the‘Design & Make’ project.

Year 11 - You will continue with your controlled assessment. In March you will be given an examination preparation sheet, which informs you of the design focus of the final exam. A typical example is: “Design a small storage device forjewellery in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh”

INTRODUCTIONThis course allows you to design and make electronic and mechanical products with creativity and originality, using components andtechniques associated with electronic circuits and mechanisms. You will use a variety of techniques ranging from soldering and PCB production methods to extensive use of ICT equipment and software including CAD/CAM. You will design and produce high quality electronic products that could include handheld games, timers, amplifiers, lighting solutions and mechanical toys.

HOW WILL SYSTEMS AND CONTROL HELP ME?Systems and Control is suitable for students with an interest inelectronics, design, programming and ICT. Other interests mightinclude maths, physics, logic systems, product design andmechanics. The skills gained will increase your problem solvingabilities and you will learn how to develop solutions to practicalchallenges. You will gain skills and knowledge about electronic products and their components. You will also have a widerknowledge about CAD/CAM and how to use it to produce highquality products in a variety of materials.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?A GCSE in systems and control can lead A Level Product Design at Haslingden Sixth Form. It can also lead to careers in a huge variety of sought after engineering vocations: electrician, productdesigner, lighting or sound technician and many more. A LevelProduct Design follows on from this course.
