YEAR INREVIEW

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Mr. Jeff Di BenedictisGCSC Foundation President

I am proud to present the 2015-2016 Gulf Coast State College Foundation

Annual Report. Since 1967, through the support of our generous community, the

Foundation has provided $13.4 million in scholarships, and nearly $8.4 million

in program support to Gulf Coast State College. The Foundation is currently

managing more than forty special purpose program funds and three program

endowments. As of June 30, 2016, the Foundation’s assets were over $29

million, and have already benefitted more than 750 GCSC students. Last year,

the Foundation awarded more than $818,000 in scholarships and over $311,000

in program support.

We have many generous benefactors who assist the Foundation in reducing

the financial gaps, and bring academic and lifelong success to the students.

For four years, HealthSouth Emerald Coast Rehabilitation Hospital has been

a loyal benefactor for the Foundation’s Florida Blue Grant. The HealthSouth/

Florida Blue grant provided approximately $100,000 in direct support to GCSC

students majoring in health science programs in 2016. The Alfred I. duPont

Foundation has more than 185 endowed scholarships and has established six

more endowed scholarship opportunities for the Gulf and Franklin Mentoring

Program. This program will allows students in Gulf and Franklin counties to

transition successfully from middle to high school, and to ultimately enhance

their college readiness. We have matched duPont’s contribution, giving the

program a total of twelve endowed scholarships to deserving students.

Due to the changes with the Department of Defense’s tuition assistance

program for active duty members, military students are facing financial

challenges. They are now prohibited from receiving payment for any fees or

additional costs associated with a course. The Military/Veteran student, on

average, makes up about 10% of GCSC’s enrollment. The Foundation, along

with the leadership of Mr. William C. Cramer, Jr., will begin a fundraising initiative

that will provide financial support for those that have financial gaps not covered

by the Department of Defense tuition assistance. The Military and Veteran

Emergency Fund will also address emergency financial needs for active military,

veterans, or dependents who are

utilizing their parent’s GI Bill. We

would like to thank Mr. Cramer

for generously supporting this

eff ort. The support we have

received from the community has

been amazing. We are grateful

to Gulf Power for inviting us to

participate in their Clay Shoot for

American Heroes fundraiser. Gulf

Power’s event helped to fund the

Gulf Power Military and Veteran Emergency Fund. Additionally, we would like to

thank everyone who participated in the 2016 Golf Tournament at Shark’s Tooth;

we had 120 golfers, and 46 tee signs on the course. The event raised $50,000 and

will provide scholarships for first generation military and veteran students.

I have enjoyed my tenure as president of the Gulf Coast State College

Foundation and It has been an honor to serve you. I hope our accomplishments

over the past 12 months have made a positive impact on the students and the

community we serve. The GCSC Foundation’s Board of Directors are committed

to the mission of the Foundation and are to be commended. I want to thank

the Foundation’s staff and the College’s faculty and staff , for their diligence and

dedication. They are what helps to make this College a strong presence in our

community. Thank you, also, to Dr. John Holdnak, and the District Board of

Trustees for their leadership and vision. Our success would not have happened

without you, our alumni, donors, volunteers and students. Each of you are

essential to the mission of giving deserving students access to quality education.

What does yourgenerositymean to me?

Receiving a scholarship from the Gulf Coast State College

Foundation is providing me with the opportunity to attend

college and pursue an education in the medical field.

I’ll be able to achieve my dream of caring for others!

GCSC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dr. John Holdnak, GCSC President

What if one idea could change the world? A 2000 movie starring Kevin Spacey, and a very young Haley Joel Osment, provided the spark that lead to a movement. Sixteen years later the movie “Pay It Forward” has generated more than 18 million Google entries including 3.3 million videos and 800,000 books. Individuals and groups worldwide continue to be inspired to make a real di erence in the lives of others without any anticipation of a payback.

The concepts of “pay it forward,” “unselfish generosity,” and “philanthropy” are not new to the Gulf Coast family. In fact, this Foundation was established almost 50 years ago with this very purpose in mind. In this annual report you will see quotes by students that describe what your generosity, in the form of a scholarship, means to them. Make note of those names as I am sure you will see them again. Those same students, and 50 years of similarly situated students before them who have benefited from the benevolence of community benefactors, will continue to “pay it forward!”

The premise, as shared by Osment’s character, is that if one person makes a significant and tangible di erence in the lives of three people they don’t know – and that those three people each make a di erence in the lives of three additional people, and so on and so on – that the exponential impact that results could truly change the world. Your donations of time and

resources have played out this very scenario countless times in the communities we serve. Many current Foundation donors and directors are themselves Gulf Coast graduates and were recipients of Foundation scholarships. Most community leaders and elected o icials in this region followed the same path as well, and continue to actively support this College, our students and a multitude of other endeavors, activities and programs that make a real di erence in the lives of others.

Osment’s character said that what is done for others can’t be easy – it has to be hard, something recipients couldn’t do for themselves. In that same spirit I am so

proud of the students and sta that make Gulf Coast State College what it is. This year, as a follow-up to last year’s Habitat for Humanity project and building on our annual role as a United Way Pacesetter organization, College employees began the “Commodores Care” volunteer program. Organizing the e orts and interests of our employees and students, as well as serving as a central point for community organizations and groups to request help, our team of enthusiastic volunteers have already logged thousands of hours of community service and support. What a wonderful way to follow the lead of the Foundation in continuing to pay it forward.

The greatestjoyfor me?

“I have had the privilege of serving as a director of the

Gulf Coast State College Foundation for thirty years and have

seen many thousands of students benefit from a foundation

scholarship or grant. Often, that support made the difference

between success or failure for an individual or family. A

contribution to our foundation is a potent means to better

lives and enhance our community.”

What does yourgenerositymean to me?

Without this scholarship, I wouldn’t be able to attend college

because I’d have to choose between getting an education or taking

care of my family. The financial help I’ve received is allowing me to

provide for my family while gaining knowledge and skills that will

create a lasting impact at home and in the community.
