June 23, 2020 Harvest is nearly upon us and Greeley County will soon be teeming with activity as local farmers and custom harvesters work to bring in what looks to be an outstanding crop for most in the area. RV and trailer hookups are in short supply and traffic is picking up around town as harvest prepares to kick into high gear. Though most have enjoyed Greeley County harvests for many years, I’d like to offer a few suggestions for those who may be new to this yearly mid-summer experience. Please be especially kind and helpful to strangers, to help point out-of-town guests and workers in the right direction if they look lost. Expect to see some unfamiliar faces, and greet them warmly, knowing that both local and out-of-area custom cutters are providing an important service to area farmers and the entire community. Traffic will noticeably increase, and I would urge everyone to use extreme caution (and to advise children of the same) when driving, walking, and biking around town. Have patience with the constant flow of vehicles, and prepare for increased late night traffic through town. When the weather is nice, it’s not unusual for farmers and custom crews to cut into the early hours of the morning. Trailer hookups are being claimed throughout town, and lodging will be extra difficult to find. Breakfast, lunch or dinner at local restaurants may take a few minutes longer. You may also see extended hours at local eating establishments. Check with individual businesses for times and locations. Best wishes to all area farmers, businesses, and others for a successful, safe, and bountiful harvest. Somewhere over the rainbow...
