The aim of the course is for students to develop an understanding of the holistic nature of art and design. AS and A2 should be seen as a natural progression from GCSE.

This AS and Advanced GCE specification requires students to develop practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of relevant materials, processes, ideas, genres and styles. Skills will be developed through observation, research, recording and analysis. Students will be encouraged to use their knowledge and understanding of the work of others to develop and extend thinking and inform their own work. Ideas will be generated and explored through enquiry that involves experimenting with a wide range of materials and techniques in an independent way.

This course will be very demanding and students will require great self-motivation and a passion for creativity. There is an expectation that students will take up the opportunity to extend their skills, knowledge and experiences through self-initiated gallery visits and extended hours activities such as the Level 1 10 week courses in Life Drawing and Photography at Tresham College in Kettering. These courses would be free of charge, although materials would incur some cost to yourself.

Length of Course One year or two yearsExamination Board AQAAssessment AS Objective Test and Data Response Papers

A2 Data Response and Essay Papers

Economics is a social science which studies how people decide to allocate their resources to different uses at both a “micro” and “macro” level. Micro-economics is the study of how the prices and output in different individual markets are determined. Macro-economics is the study of broad aggregates and averages such as inflation, employment, government spending and the balance of payments.

Why should you consider A Level Economics?Economics is a valued academic subject which requires a logical approach to issues and problems. It is acceptable for college/university entrance and is relevant to everyday life.

Economics at A Level will allow students to develop the ability to make rational and consistent judgements using their skills of literacy, numeracy and data handling within an economic context. Excellent preparation for students wishing to pursue careers in business, finance, insurance, accountancy etc or to continue with the subject in Higher Education.

Classroom work will include a wide variety of activities designed to allow students to show their full capability. An interest in the subject and a willingness to cover a great deal of new material in a short space of time is very important.

Physics Rules the World! The new and updated Advancing Physics Course is very different from the conventional type of Physics A Level course. The syllabus is up to date and deals in a novel way with the fundamental ideas that students of physics should understand and be able to use. The emphasis is on understanding what is going on in a situation and not on remembering formulae to solve routine problems.

The course relates to the ‘real’ world. The examination itself presents contexts where physics is used; engineering, communications, space, energy supply for example. The successful candidate will be able to interpret these situations with the knowledge they have acquired through the course. They will be able to simplify complex situations - in short they will be able to “see the wood for the trees!”

The new course is complemented with a CD Rom which is issued to all students so that they have the opportunity at home to widen their generalPhysics knowledge.

OPPORTUNITIESThere are many opportunities open to successful A Level students. Physics A Level is a must for a career in Science or the varied world of Engineering as well as many aspects of Medicine.

All in all this is an exciting and worthwhile course. Even if you do not choose to enter the wonderful world of science based careers, you willfinish this course with a better understanding and interpretation of the world around you.

AS/A2 PsychologyEntry Requirements

5 GCSE grades C or above, including Maths and English. This subject requires motivation, interest and regular background reading.

Length of Course AS one year, A2 two yearsExamination Board OCR

Year 12 Content:We will look at 15 famous psychological ‘Core Studies’ drawn from the biological, cognitive, social, developmental and individual differences approaches. You will also complete 4 investigative activities completed as a class or in small groups.

Year 12 Assessment:At the end of Year 12 you will have 2 exams. One on the 15 ‘Core Studies’ and their associated issues, methods and approaches. This has a mixture of short and longer structured questions. The other exam will be based on the knowledge and understanding gained from the 4 investigative activities and also tests your knowledge and understanding of psychological research methods in general.

Year 13 Content:We will focus on two specific areas of psychology: Forensic psychology and Health and Clinical psychology. The Health and Clinical unit looks at issues such as healthy living; stress; and mental disorders. The Forensic unit considers explanations for criminal behaviour; offender profiling; the psychology of the courtroom; and offender punishments and treatments. You will also design, conduct and write up your own experiment

Year 13 Assessment:Health and Clinical psychology and Forensic psychology will each be assessed by means of a 1½ hour exam in June. A second exam will be based on your knowledge and understanding of research methods, approaches, perspectives, issues and debates in psychology which you will develop through the study of the two units and by carrying out your own research.

So why do it? Read on to see what the students think.

Psychology is a really interesting subject and gives you an insight into the workings of peoples’ minds. Whether you know what you want to study after the sixth form or not, it is a really useful subject to take, as well as being really enjoyable. The work is not easy but it’s not difficult either and the things you learn can help you out in other subjects and also at exam times.

It’s not too much science, so you don’t get bogged down in facts all the time.

This subject will not only teach you a lot about other people but about yourself, especially how to cope under exam pressure.

Although the Core Studies may seem like a lot at first, you spend a lot of time on each and by the time the exam comes you are more than prepared. Once that’s out of the way the coursework gives you the chance to express your views on psychology and develop the areas you enjoyed the most. Year 13 is a little harder but that’s inevitable.

I enjoyed the “Hans” case study because we spent a lot of time studying it in groups; doing storyboards, role-playing and presentations
