“Cest une jolie vie” or “It’s a beautiful life” – this was the theme of the November 2006 PLMGSS Cambridge Dinner. It was a night of true beauty as the graduating students of 2006 came in their finest apparel to celebrate and give thanks to God for their journey in PLMGSS.

Highlights of the evening included a praise and worship session, the Miss Cambridge talent and beauty pageant, a prefects’ item for our former Vice-Principal, Miss Yoong, and the blessed draw. It was indeed a night of colour and vibrance orchestrated by our capable Secondary Four/Five and Three representatives of 2006.

THE PL CAMBRIDGE DINNER

Enjoying the sights at one of the wonders of the world, Angkor Wat

The objectives of the trip were to : - serve the community in Cambodia - experience a cross-cultural exchange - be partners in the Girls’ Brigade extension programme - develop the spirit of care and concern for the less fortunate - develop event management and organisational skills

We started our trip in Cambodia with the intention to bless the people there. However, we felt that we left the country more richly blessed by the people we have met and all the things that we had seen. Our Cambodian hosts and friends were hospitable, gentle, and contented even though they had so little. As for me personally, I have learnt to appreciate my life better, understanding that I should appreciate the things that I have, and not take them for granted!

From the 12 to 19 December 2006, a team of 10 members from the Girls’ Brigade 4th Company, comprising 3 teachers and 7 students, went on a service learning trip to Cambodia.

BLESSING THE NEIGHBOURHOOD 2006 / 2007

On 16 February 2007, about 250 PL-Lites spent one afternoon packing the mandarin oranges and biscuits into a specially-designed PL red paper bag to bless our neighbours and community during the Chinese New Year festive period.

These PL-Lites distributed the gifts to our neighbours from 10 HDB blocks surrounding PLMGS(S), Ah Soo Walk and Ah Soo Gardens and Staff from PLMGS(P).

The pupils learnt an invaluable lesson of serving and contributing to the society.

On 19 October 2006, in preparation for our move back to our Promised Land in Lorong Ah Soo, after 2 years of being in PL Kadesh at Serangoon North Ave 1, PL-Lites moved out together to bless the residents at Serangoon North and Lichfield Road. It was the school’s way of saying thank you to all the residents for their patience and kindness during our short stint in the neighbourhood. It was also our way of informing them of our return to our Promised Land at 296 Lorong Ah Soo. Blessing the neighbourhood has been a tradition of PL, in keeping with the school values of caring for others and contributing to the community.

Prayer for Ms Rebekah Tan and Ms Mabel Goh

Our school leaders, Board of Management and chaplains

It is the tradition of the school to begin a brand new year and a brand new school term with the PL Family Dedication Service (formerly known as Staff Dedication). This year, the PL Family Dedication Service was held on 5 January 2007 in the PLMGS (S) school hall.

PL Primary School joined us for this service as we pledged ourselves anew as a family (School Leaders, Teachers, Support Staff, Alumni, Parents and Chaplains) in our service to the Lord – to magnify His Name in all that we do and in the lives that we crossed our paths with.

The staff from both Primary and Secondary schools also put together a special song item during the service. Our Chaplain, Rev Tay Kay Leong, also led us in a special prayer for both Ms Rebekah Tan and Ms Mabel Goh, the 2 VPs of the Secondary School.

PL FAMILY DEDICATION SERVICE

1ST DAY OF SCHOOL

To mark the beginning of a new chapter in the history of PL, pupils, staff, parents, Alumni and members of Paya Lebar Methodist Church made a momentous journey from the holding school in Serangoon North Avenue 1 to the newly renovated site in Lorong Ah Soo on 3 January 2007. Clad in the new PL - Lite T-shirt, we walked over 4 kilometres back to our Promised Land. The Lord blessed us with fine weather and watched over every step we took.

There was an immense sense of joy and pride as we stepped through the gates of the school. At around 10.30am, the resounding voices of the pupils could be heard as they sang the school song and national anthem at the parade square.

The entire school population assembled in the hall for a time of praise and worship led by Ms Mabel Goh, Mrs Emily Jacob, Ms Adeline Loh and Mrs Sharon Tng. There was a time spent in quiet contemplation as we reminisced PL of the past in a photo montage presentation. Mrs Lee, our principal, spoke about the future of PL and the exciting events for 2008 before we ended the day by singing the theme song ‘Magnify His Name’ (composed by our teacher, Ms Adeline Loh).

We know that God has truly blessed PLMGS with a beautiful school. The only fitting response is that we continue to magnify Him in all that we do in 2007 and the years to come.

A time of praise and worship to give thanks to our ever faithful God

A final prayer before we bade good-bye to the school in Serangoon North.

Taking the momentous walk back to Lorong Ah Soo

Claiming our Promised Land at Lorong Ah Soo

Our Lorong Ah Soo campus was ready for our homecoming in 2007! We were filled with great excitement and anticipation. But we knew that we will not go anywhere without God. On 29 December 2006, about 100 of us in PL family gathered together to invite God’s presence into PL @ Lorong Ah Soo.

Through worship, prayer walk at all corners of school compound and sharing of God’s word by Rev Tay Kay Leong, we invited God to dwell in our school. Our principal, Mrs Lee shared on God’s faithfulness and His providence for PL all these years. The night session ended with the sharing of God’s promises that various groups received. And we knew that we are now ready to begin our new chapter at Lorong Ah Soo.

CCA FAIR

Life will never be the same again….join a UYO today

Can you recognise us? We are from the ELDDS

Join the PL ChoirOrganising Committee of the CCA Fair

The theme for this year’s fair is “The Star in You” as the school hopes that each of the Sec 1 pupils would be able to find the star in themselves as they participate and excel in the CCA of their choice.

The programme started with talks and performances in the hall, followed by a tour of a diverse array of booths set up by the different CCA groups. As parents and the Sec 1 pupils interacted with pupils from various CCAs, they experienced the fiery enthusiasm of the various sports groups, the crisp commands of the contingent leaders from the uniformed groups, the sweet euphony of the music groups with their timeless classics and the exuberant displays by the various clubs and societies.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CONCERT

On 16 February 2007, PL celebrated our first Chinese New Year Concert at our new premises at Lorong Ah Soo. We rejoiced to-gether, watching the various items like ballet, cross talk and ethnic dances put up by our talented students. Our girls also participated in the Inter - Class Gigantic Chinese New Year Card competition that day. This year, as a mark to celebrate our countless blessings from God, each girl was given a specially designed PL red paper bag containing two mandarin oranges.

CHINESE NEW YEAR LUNCH FOR THE ELDERLYThe air was filled with excitement as more than 100 guests from the Aljunied GRC, St. Luke’s ElderCare, Yong - En Care Centre and the Society for the Aged Sick came to our school for the Lunar New Year Celebrations. Our guests were served an 8 - course banquet and were treated to an interesting array of performances while feasting. PL-Lites from different levels worked well together, providing excellent service and brought smiles to our elderly friends. It was truly an enjoyable event for all involved.

The Sec 1 Orientation 2007 got off to an exciting start – walking from the holding school in Serangoon North back to Lorong Ah Soo. The next 3 days were just as exciting. The prefects organised many games and activities to help the ‘newbies’ get to know one another better. Each of the girls opened up through the action-packed and fun-filled programme.

A special programme was conducted for non-PL primary girls so as to familiarise them with the PL history and culture. Parents were also part of the Orientation when they attended the CCA Fair, where various CCA groups showcased themselves and promoted their respective CCAs. The climax of the Orientation was the Talentime,“WOW”. Each Sec 1 class came up with a cheer, skit and/or dance. Although many of them were shy about performing in front of everyone, they did well. Every class was a winner in one way or another.

Certainly, the Orientation has helped the Sec 1s get acquainted to life in PL – a school of infinite possibilities!

PREFECTS' INSTALLATION

The members of the class committee praying for God’s guidance and wisdom as they serve their class for the year.

INSTALLATION OF THE CLASS MONITORS / COMMITTEE

Theme verse for 2007 - “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Luke 12:34

The Prefects’ Installation was held on 7 February 2007. It was a memorable day for each of the prefects as they dedicated themselves to serve the school and most importantly, God. The prefects pledged to be upright, able and worthy of service and aim to grow like ‘Seeds of Fervour’, coinciding with their theme for 2007. After the service, they

brought the guests around the school, sharing with them the culture and values of the school. It was an enriching experience as the prefects had a chance to interact and learn from guests from other schools.

We are proud that old girls are carrying the torch, brightening the far-flung corners of God’s world. We feature here 3 former members of PL’s 4th Company Girls’ Brigade.

1. Lynn Cham (Class of 1997) – Lay Professional Staff – Youth Ministry at Trinity Methodist Church. Lynn is helping in the 55th Company Girls’ Brigade attached to Serangoon Garden Secondary School. She made mission trips to Cambodia. Later this year Lynn will be leaving for Switzerland to take up a special course in watch-making. She already holds a BSc degree in Computing from London University (External). We wish her all the best and may she also bring the torch and shine among the Alps.

3. Magdalene Lim (Class of 1978) returned to Singapore in late 2006 after she and her husband, Toe Set completed their theology studies in US. They serve in Campus Crusade and prior to going to the States they served in South-East Asia. Magdalene has just enrolled her daughter in Paya Lebar MGS.

There are many other PL-Lites in the mission field. Let us remember them in our prayers. PL Alumni has been warmly welcomed in the school’s activities. During the Prayer Walk in December 2006, Alumni members joined in blessing the redeveloped PL Secondary School premises in Lorong Ah Soo. Then when PL Secondary made its exodus from the holding school in Serangoon North, some Alumni members from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s turned up at Lorong Ah Soo to welcome the PL Flag and Exodus Party. At the Chinese New Year gathering on 16 February 2007 for seniors from Yong-En Care Centre, Society for the Aged Sick and St Luke’s ElderCare, the Alumni Committee was also invited. We thank the school for remembering and involving the Alumni.

At the most recent event, the PL Athletic Meet for both the Primary and Secondary schools, held on 12 April 2007 at the Hougang Stadium, our Alumni President, Ms Doreen Goh (Class of 1984) was the Guest-of-Honour. We look forward to such bonding.

"We are one in the bond of loveWe will join our spiritWith the Spirit of GodWe are one in the bond of love."
