From the Principal’s Desk

GCE Chronicles, the newsletter group of the college, has been doing a great job in representing the college to the outside world in the proper manner and also in functioning as a bridge between the college and the society. The team has improved itself technically and professionally over the many releases. The recent innovative efforts by GCE Chronicles such as conducting interviews with faculty members, videotaping them and posting them online; posting interviews with Alumni of the college who have had significant achievements etc., stand testimony to the team’s improvement. The positive reviews from people outside are encouraging and I wish the newsletter team success in this Annual Edition ’13.

GCE Chronicles, the newsletter team of the college was initiated in the year 2010. Its first release

was the Annual Edition for the Year 2010 which was released on 1, January, 2011. Since then, the

newsletter team has brought out 12 newsletters which include four annual editions, three monthly

editions, one student edition, one project edition and two Gecofest special editions. The Annual Edition ’13

is the 13th release by GCE Chronicles. With every release, the team has improved in the various aspects

involved in the making of a newsletter such as designing, editing and publishing of a newsletter. With the

monthly editions started earlier this year, the team has showed its dedication in representing the college in

the right way to the society. GCE Chronicles will continue to bring out newsletters, upholding the rich

heritage of this 48-year old institution. We also take this opportunity to remember the previous Principals

and the present Principal for their support and encouragement to the newsletter team.

Workshop on Green Building

The Department of Civil Engineering

celebrated the ‚World Environment Day‛, on 5

June, 2013. Dr. N. Ganesan, Professor of Civil

Engineering, NIT, Calicut started the function by

planting a sapling in the host department. The

Principal, Dr. R. S. D. Wahida Banu presided over

the function. ‚Cement production emits huge

amounts of carbon-di-oxide into the atmosphere.

To mitigate this, replacement of cement with an

alternate material can be adopted, which is the

need of the hour in urban areas. The ideal usage

and disposal of industrial wastes safely without

affecting the environment has to be given

importance in the society. Usage of artificial sand

for construction has to be encouraged so that the

soil erosion in river basins can be controlled.

Students should actively take part in improving

sustainability,‛ said Dr. N. Ganesan. Associate

Professors of Civil Engineering Dr. D. Shoba

Rajkumar and Dr. V. Rajkumar, Assistant Professor

G. Arunkumar and other faculty members of Civil

Department were present on this occasion.

World Environment Day

The Society of Civil Engineers

was inaugurated by Dr. Manu

Santhanam, Professor, Building

Technology and Construct ion

Management division, IIT Madras on the

27, September, 2013. The Principal

Dr. R. S. D. Wahida Banu, Head of the

Department of Civil Engineering

Dr. S. Sukumar, and faculty members

were present. The Principal delivered the

Patron Address followed by the

Presidential Address by Dr. S. Sukumar.

The chief guest, a recipient of

many prestigious awards and honours in

the field of Concrete Technology,

conducted a seminar on, ‚Attaining

sustainability in concrete construction‚.

He emphasized the need for

incorporating newer technologies in the

production and performance of concrete

and its various advantages such as

decreasing the carbon output, increasing

the sustainability and durability etc. The

latter part of the function included

modelling and paper presentation

competitions for the students.

On the 24, August, 2013, IIT,

Bombay conducted an online workshop

in association with the Indian Society of

Technical Education (ISTE) on ‚Green

Building Awareness‛, under the National

Mission of Education across various

remote centers in the country. All third

year students of Department of Civil

Engineering attended this workshop in

the Seminar hall of the Department of

ECE for the college is also one of the

remote centers. Heads of various

departments and faculty members were

also present.

The workshop gave a broad

overview about sustainable buildings to

Engineering and Architecture students.

Participants were also able to interact

with the relevant lecturers through an

An AICTE-sponsored staff development programme on

‚Behavior and Applications of Ferrocement and Fibre-Reinforced

composites‛ was conducted at Department of Civil Engineering

from the 3 to 14, June, 2013. The Chief Guest, Prof. P. Paramasivam,

Professorial fellow, National University of Singapore (NUS), said that

ferrocement and fiber reinforced composites will be suitable for

buildings constructed in earthquake and tsunami prone areas as

they possess more ductility and impact resistance, in his address.

Ferrocement can also be used to construct liquid storage tanks,

secondary roofing slabs, bullet proof walls and doors, boats and

also in improving the elevation of the buildings, he added.

The Principal, Dr. R. S. D. Wahida Banu, presided over the

function. Prof. G.Vimala Rosaline, Professor of Civil Engineering

(PG), offered felicitations. Dr. D. Shoba Rajkumar, Associate

Professor of Civil Engineering, Coordinator of the programme,

detailed the course plan. Around 50 civil engineering faculty

members from various colleges participated.

110 third-year students of the Department of Civil

Engineering (CE) visited the Stanley Reservoir, Mettur on an

Educational Visit on the 6, September, 2013. The Water Treatment

plant in Mettur was the main place of interest. Students got

first-hand knowledge about the various processes involved in the

treatment of water. The Infiltration gallery of the Stanley reservoir

was also visited. Students studied the structural design of the dam

and the water flow through it. The visit helped them to understand

the applications of civil engineering in real life and also showed

them how this branch of science is profoundly used to create

structural wonders.

M.E. Structural Engineering and B.E. Final year who are undertaking

their projects in the field of in Ferrocement, attended the function.

Dr. D. Shoba Rajkumar delivered a lecture on the Ferrocement

construction marvels like floating ferrocement structures and the

other uses of ferrocement. Students were also explained about the

advantages of being a student member of the Ferrocement society.

The second session comprised the actual construction of a

‚Prefabricated Ferrocement arch garden bridge‛ Students actively

participated in the construction activity and gained hands-on

experience.

On 24, September, 2013 the Department of Civil

Engineering obtained a credit from TEQIP for their excellent

contribution towards the field of surveying. A DGPS (Differential

Global Positioning System) worth of Rs. 30 lakhs, was purchased.

The department mainly aspires to develop the surveying skill of

each and every student by updating and implementing the present

technology in their syllabus. To impart this, each member of staff

and the student community were shown a demo on the different

modes of operation of the DGPS and its applications. It is to be

mentioned that our institution is the first to purchase this expensive

surveying instrument in Tamil Nadu, for the educational purpose.

The field of Information Technology undergoes day to

day changes. Apart from theoretical knowledge, in the field of

business processes and IT outsourcing, having a practical

exposure is mandatory. Hence 67 students from the third year of

CSE undertook an industrial visit to Bangalore. The three-day

schedule comprised visits to the following companies:

ACS Xerox private Ltd. , Bangalore

Tech Mahindra, , Bangalore

MPower Global solutions, Bangalore

Every company chosen is a corporate giant and the

students gained immense experience through the visit. Hence the

industrial visit helped the students to know their company

culture to some extent, their style of work, the projects under

work and the technologies that are being extensively used in

these companies. Also the personnel briefed on how the students

can increase their level of ‘employability’.
