Each player now chooses two matching Hawaiian playerpieces: Monk Seal, Koa Tree, Humpback Whale, or theHumuhumunukunukuapuaa. Each player puts one piece onthe Hoomaka (Start) space, which they will move along the

track during the game. Their matching piece will move fromcounty to county on the Hawaii map in the middle of theboard, representing the county in which the player is able toinvest in available businesses (bubble 4, Figure 2).

Players review their Resource Cards and the businessesavailable, and will choose a county to place their secondplayer piece immediately prior to THEIR first turn. Try to pick acounty where your resources match the businesses available,so that you can start at least one business on your first turn.

Everyone rolls both dice. Highest roller goes first and playproceeds to that players left.

Nominate someone to be the banker. Banker handles all financialexchanges between players and the bank.

Shuffle the Chance and Resource decks. Deal four Resource Cardsand one Chance Card to each player, then place the Resource,

Chance, and Permit Application decks on their places on the board. These will be draw piles throughout the game (bubble 1, Figure 1).

Give each player three Outrigger Cards and $500,000. Shuffle the Business cards and put eight of them out around the board,

as illustrated below (bubble 2, Figure 1). These represent thebusinesses available for investment. Throughout the game, there willalways be eight businesses available for investment.

Shuffle the Policies & Events (P&E) deck and place one card, facedown, on the board on each P&E space indicated on the track (bubble3, Figure 1). Each player may now read one P&E card of theirchoice. This sneak peek might help inform your game strategy!

    HUMAN RESOURCE FLEXIBILITY

a Green MBA is a wild card--it can beused as any other Resource. Forinstance, if you want to start the SolarInstaller business (Fig. 5), and dont havea Green Building Entrepreneur Card, theGreen MBA can serve that role.

you can also use any entrepreneurcard as a Green Collar Worker. So ifyou have a Green Building Entrepreneurand two other entrepreneur cards, youcan use those three cards to start theSolar Installer business (Fig. 5), even ifyou have no Green Collar Workers.

If you dont have the exact Resource Cardsneeded to start a particular business andcant get them in trade, its ok--you haveoptions:

    4

Figure 5. HOW TO INVEST IN A BUSINESS

    PERMIT APPLICATIONS AND APPROVED PERMITS

If a business requires an Approved Permit, a permit icon will appear in the blue fieldnext to the Resources needed (see RESOURCES in Figure 5). To apply for apermit, pay $10,000 during your turn and draw a Permit Application card. Then onyour next turn, roll one die. Roll a 1-5 and your permit is approved (flip it over to theApproved Permit side). Roll a 6 and your permit is delayed another round! Whenyou use an Approved Permit to invest in a business, simply return that card to thePermit deck on the board (and apply for another if you think youll need it!)

    STARTUP INVESTMENT

Noted by I, this is the initialinvestment you have to pay (intothe bank) to get this businessstarted. In this case, $50,000.

FINANCIAL DIVIDENDSNoted by D, this is the dividend

the business pays its owner (you)at the beginning of every turnAFTER the turn in which you startthe business.

BONUSES In the green field at the bottomof some of the businesses, youll note thatthere are bonuses available. The idea is thatsome businesses help each other. Forinstance, a Green Builder company (right),would likely send a lot of referrals to a SolarInstaller (above). So, if anyone starts a GreenBuilder, and you had a Solar Installer in play,

youd draw a bonus Resource Card, as notedat the bottom of the Solar business (above).

    ECO-CREDITSThese are the environmental and

health benefits of this business. ASolar Installer helps reduce Hawaiisdependence on foreign oil byproducing clean energy, so your eco-credit is offsetting two barrels of oilfor investing in this business. Otherbusinesses may give you credits foroffsetting waste or imported FOOD.

LOCATIONTo start this business, your player piece mustbe in Honolulu County.

RESOURCESFor this Solar Installer business, youd need to have the resources

pictured in the blue field on thebusiness: a Green BuildingEntrepreneur, two Green CollarWorkers, and an Approved Permit.See Human Resource Flexibility, right, for ways to start the businesswithout these exact resources.

In the board game, play concludes in theround when someone crosses the PAU linemarked on the board. (Pau is a Hawaiianword indicating being done). Play will then

continue only until the player who went last to begin the game takes theirfinal turn (everyone gets the same number of turns in the game thisway). If youre playing the card game, play concludes after the die hits 6,and each player has had 6 turns. Now its time to add up your scoresand see how you did! Using scrap paper, make a scorecard like Figure6 (artistically challenged? Just use words in place of icons :)

Eco-Credits. Count the eco-credit iconsyouve earned on your business cards. Forexample, the business at right counts for 3

barrels of oil. In the sample scorecard (Fig.6), Mo had Eco-credits of 4 dump trucks, 6barrels of oil, and 5 cans of FOOD.These scores go in the # column for Mo.

Money made. Count all of the investmentcosts of your businesses you have by theend of the game, and add that to theamount of cash you have left on hand togive you a total financial performance forthe game. Add $200K to your total if youown this business, for example. Add yourtotal score, in thousands, to the # columnfor money made.

    Totalrank

In the Rank column, rank the players in their performance in eachcategory. For example, Mo took first place in reducing waste (dumptrucks), Paul second, Kyla third, and Jenn last. Similarly, Jenn wonoil, Paul won FOOD, Paul and Kyla tied for first in creating jobs, and Jenn won money. All these figures are in blue.

Sum up the ranks (in blue below) for each player, and the best totalrank wins (total ranks in green, bottom row). So despite onlyfinishing 1st in one category, Kyla ended with the best total rank (10,vs. Pauls and Jenns 12 and Mos 14). In other words, Kyla had thegreatest overall triple bottom line benefit, and wins the game!

GBO HAWAII:e Card GameEverything you need to turn your board game into a card game...and back!HAWAII

IntroductionGBO Hawaii, the board game, can be madeinto a card game very easily. The card gameis simpler to learn, faster to play, requires lessspace, and is more portable. To adapt yourboard game into a card game, youll remove ahandful of cards from a few decks, and justleave out a few elements of the board game.

Figure 8. Cards to remove from other decks

Questions? Feedback? Want to heckle your rivals? Its all possible at www.GBOHawaii.com and www.Facebook.com/GBOHawaii

    2. Outrigger Card DeckNo need for these, as in thecard game, youre not movingfrom county to county like youdo in the board game.

Figure 7. Three things not used in the card game

Chance CardsThere are two Citizens Unite Chance Cards that move the Lobbyists, and theBoard Dinged! card that only relates to the board game. Remove these as well.

    (2)

    (4)

Policies & EventsThere are four Event cards that move the Lobbyists, and since there are no Lobbyistsin the card game version of GBO Hawaii, these cards are not used. Since we areremoving the four Event Cards that relate to Lobbyists and want to keep a good balancebetween Policies and Events, you can remove these three Policy Cards, too.

    3. Player PiecesNo need for player pieces, and the oil industrylobbyists also cant haunt you during the card game!
