The Buck Stops Here!

On October 8th the Cruz family opened Majuvi, (pronounced ma-you-vee) at 960 W. Grand Avenue Suite F in Grover Beach. It is their first “Brick and Mortar” business after 19 years of providing catering and dec-orations for parties, quicneanera’s, and other functions all over the Cen-tral Coast.

The visionary for the busi-ness is Ignacio “Nacho” Cruz. He is the Chef at Pe-te’s Seaside Café at Port San Luis. His artistic eye is not only for food arrangements, but also for flowers, home, and party decorations.

Running the shop is his wife

Maria and their son Marco. Maria was working at Denny’s several years ago during the tragic shoot-ing. Since then she has never

For over 12 years Richard Rob-erts has been writing the column Business Person of the Month in the Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce Newsletter. “I have interviewed well over 100 com-munity business people and leaders in the Five Cities area and the pleasure has been all mine. What a wonderful experi-ence it has been to be able to learn from folks where they were born and raised, how they came to be in this area, how they start-ed their enterprise and what sorts of goods and services they

offer the community” say’s Rob-erts.

He has been involved in nu-merous Grover Beach community organizations such as the Cham-ber, Rotary, the Library, the Ex-ploration Station and has been a former Planning Commissioner. He has decided to resign from the job of writing the Business Person of the Month column for this newsletter. He is a very hard act to follow. work with her son. Maria graduat-ed from college in Mexico where she and Nacho owned a restau-rant and hotel. They came to

California 20 years ago when Marco was 6 years old.

A strong work ethic was instilled in Marco and his two brothers from a young age. He recalls at age 6 his father bringing in 40 pound bags of onions and having his sons learn to chop all of them fast and without shed-

father taught us, in fact it made us much stronger.”

Marco went to school locally, graduating from Arroyo Grande High School. He moved to South-ern California to work for the Chipotle restaurants. His work ethic and ability to “Chop” made him very valuable and he moved up through their corporation. His passion has also been dancing. He has danced professionally doing salsa, ballroom, and all styles. He feels dance is an op-portunity for him to utilize his creativity.

Following the shooting at Den-ny’s Marco decided to come back home to be a support for his mother following the tragic inci-dent. He immediately started working as an instructor at Del-lo’s Dance and Performing Arts studio. He loves dance and work-ing with the children. Seeing them mature and develop is very rewarding. He takes special pride in working with one of the stu-dents, 2010 AGHS graduate

Maria and Marco work at the flower shop seven days a week. They want to get the word out and let everyone know that they are not only open, but will do whatever it takes to make their customers happy. They want to provide the “Complete Package” of great product, enthusiastic customer service, and of course the work ethic to do whatever it takes to provide for their custom-ers. “I will deliver wherever I need to go, if someone wants flowers during closed hours, the phone goes to my cell and I will meet them at the shop to provide whatever they want,” say’s Marco.

Their flowers and arrange-ments have been called “unique” for their designs and creativity. “We are set apart by our unique-ness,” Marco adds. The sign on the front of the business states, “Flowers, Decorations, and More.” Marco say’s, “The ‘And

membership over 15% in the past 3 months and continue to drive our benefits to businesses in our community.

The annual retreat of our board of directors was a huge success, we had past-Chairman Glenn Martin facilitate the retreat with Peter Cancela of the Pismo Beach Chamber and Charles Anders of Strategic initiatives (http://www.strategicinit.com) as keynote speakers. The outcome of the retreat was great 2011 planning and understanding the needs of our members.

9th ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DRIVE Last year our “8th Annual

Christmas Drive” was once again successful even in these stress-ful times. In 3-months we collect-ed enough money and gifts to provide Christmas presents to the children of approximately 125 families in need. Some of our gifts included bicycles, wag-ons, dolls, stuffed toys, crayons, coloring books, trucks, cars, baby toys and even a few items for the older children. We cannot be success-ful without your help!

Our only request to those wishing to participate in receiv-ing gifts from the Christmas gift givea-way was that they did not bring their children. This would allow their children to the have the surprise only Christmas Eve or Christmas morning can provide. Our elves Larry & Marianne Conner, William & Lucas Appleton just to name a few, were again wonderful as they volunteered to wrap gifts for anyone needing assistance or just provide paper, ribbon, name-tags, tape and gifts. Though our gifts were not expensive the look

on all the parent’s faces and the “Thank You” notes that followed showed the gifts were greatly appreciated. Some stated they would not have had a Christmas had it not been for our generous supporters.

This year American Property Services, along with our good friends and vendors started working towards providing gifts for as many families who may

come through our doors. Though we have been purchasing as many items as possible whenev-er a sale comes along we still need your dona-tions to make our “ 9 t h A n n u a l

Christmas Drive” an even bigger success than our last. As you know our economy has made it very difficult on many families and we want desperately to in-sure there is a little happiness in their lives at what should be a season of joy. Gifts will be dis-tributed on Tuesday, December 21st between 1:30pm - 4:30pm and you’re welcome to partici-pate. We will provide any addi-

tional gifts to the home-less shelter and/or CASA should there be any lefto-ver.

We are asking for your dona-tions in the form of dollars or gifts. We welcome any and all donations you may be willing to provide. Please bring your un-wrapped gift or donation to: American Property Services, 775 W. Grand Ave., Suite I, Grover Beach, CA 93433. Make your checks or money orders payable to APS/ Christmas Fund. You could also take your money dona-tion to Rabobank Pismo Beach (ask for Emily or Carla). Remem-ber, 100 % of the moneys will be used to purchase gifts and Christmas trees for those who need a little help.

One of Santa’s Greatest help-ers is Larry Conner who will be more than happy to pick-up any gifts for your convenience. Please call 805-474-9220 and if neces-sary please leave a message.

Thank you for your continued support and we wish each and everyone one of you a very Merry Christmas! ■

The City Council and Planning Commission of the City of Grover Beach will conduct a Public Hearing on Mon-day, December 6, 2010 immediately following the regu-lar City Council meeting held at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 154 South Eighth Street, Grover Beach, CA to consider the adoption of the West Grand Avenue Master Plan.

The Master Plan would establish design guidelines for future development of public and private projects along the entire West Grand Avenue corridor from the beach to 260 feet east of Oak Park Boulevard and generally bounded by Ramona Avenue to the north and Rockaway Avenue to the south. The Plan would imple-ment the goals of the City’s General Plan to revitalize the corridor into a vibrant, economically sound, and pedestrian-oriented corridor. The Master Plan is availa-ble for viewing at the City’s website www.grover.org.

The City Council and Planning Commission will re-ceive a presentation on the recommendations for the West Grand Avenue Master Plan followed by a Public Hearing to receive public comments on the draft Plan. At the conclusion of the Public Hearing, the Planning Commission will convene to a meeting to consider rec-ommending approval of the Plan to the City Council. If the Planning Commission takes action on this item, the City Council will then consider adoption of the draft Plan. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the Community Develop-ment Department by telephone at (805) 473-4520 or by email to [email protected]. ■
