Geoffrey Bell has been a passionate numismatist for more than fifty years. Geoff’s first passions were post-Confederation Maritime tokens and Canadian paper money. Over the years he has authored a number of important articles on Maritime trade tokens, penitentiary tokens, paper money, and New Brunswick Indian Chief medals. In 1987 he received the J. Douglas Ferguson Award for his many and varied contributions to Canadian numismatics. His most recent passion is Canadian medals of historical interest. Like most advanced collectors of his

generation, he also collected pre-Confederation tokens. The collection assembled here represents material acquired both from a previous generation and notables such as Doug Ferguson, along with recent acquisitions from the John J. Ford Jr. Canadian token sale at the ANA in August 2013.

The highlight of Geoff’s collection is undoubtedly the excessively rare Peter McAuslane farthing size token for St. John’s, Newfoundland, Breton 956, in EF condition, and probably the finest known in private hands. Almost its equal in terms of desirability is an elusive R.W. Owen Ropery token from the John Temple collection. Also from Temple comes a North West Company token in copper, which grades VF and is many times rarer than the two brass examples which are in the sale. The Temple collection is also the source of twenty or so more ordinary tokens in extraordinary grades. Other rarities in the sale include the Gloriam Regni 5 sols, a Magdalen Islands penny in proof, four Side Views in exceptional condition, a Hunterstown, the Lauzon Ferry token, Molson tokens, a Vexator, and Wellington battle halfpennies in silver. Not surprisingly, Geoff’s collection is strong on Maritime tokens, and in addition to the McAuslane includes a PEI Holey Dollar, as well as one of only twelve recorded PEI Dumps with a claim to legitimacy, a McDermott token, a McCarthy penny, Sheaf of Wheat, and an 1843 New Brunswick penny and halfpenny in proof. These latter two pieces were acquired from the Don Flick collection, which was sold by Frank Rose in 1975. Also from Flick comes an 1842 Bank of Montreal penny in proof and many other high grade acquisitions. Maritime pieces come from the old time collections of people such as the New Brunswicker J.D.B.F. MacKenzie, and the Islanders Wendell Rogers, Harley Ings, and Tom Rogers. There is an excellent run of Nova Scotia tokens in high grade, along with singular rarities such as the 1382 Nova Scotia Halfpenny in EF and the seldom offered Anchor & H token. The serious collector will be hard pressed not to find either a stunning rarity or one of the more familiar pre-Confederation tokens in outstanding condition to add to his or her cabinet.

When I was 12 years old, a neighbor invited my brother and me to watch TV at his home. Our neighbor had the first TV on our street. Between programs, he showed me his coin collection and I was hooked. He gave me 2 Whitman folders for Christmas which led me to the bank to hunt through roll after roll for coins to fill the holes. My first lesson in numismatics was that most new collectors need a mentor. The second lesson was certain holes in the folder were difficult to fill. Rarity was then introduced into my collecting.

Over the last 60 years my collecting interests evolved. In the mid-1960s, a good friend introduced me to tokens and medals. My interest in decimal collecting waned and pre-Confederation and post-Confederation tokens took centre stage. By the 1970s, I discovered organized numismatics and became Moncton Coin Club President and then President of the Atlantic Provinces Numismatic Association. I loved the friendships formed and the learning at conventions and shows. I joined the RCNA in 1965 and a wider world of numismatics was revealed. I was invited to become a Fellow of the Canadian Numismatic Research Society where I met some terrific people like Sheldon Carroll, Guy Potter, Doug Ferguson, Frank Harding, Don Stewart, Cec Tannahill, Mitch MacDonald and many others who became good friends. We corresponded regularly and shared information.

Organizationally, I served 2 terms as President of the RCNA, President of the Canadian Paper Money Society, President of the Canadian Numismatic Research Society, Chair of the JD Ferguson Historical Research Foundation, Coin World Canadian Trends Editor, Acquisitions Committee member of the Bank of Canada Numismatic Collection and as the expert on the Canadian Antique Roadshow. Once again, new friends were made generating exciting new experiences.

I started collecting chartered banknotes in the 1980s and particularly enjoyed the Maritime banks. My interest in medals continues to this day. In 1986, my wife Sylvia and I opened the Coin Cabinet in Moncton, NB even though I continued as a school principal. My son Brian purchased the store from me in the early ’90s and he is running a successful business to this day. I am afraid I was more a collector than a dealer. You don’t make money that way. I love to research and write and have done so extensively. To me acquiring a new specimen involves the chase, the purchase and the research and writing. It is easier to rationalize the price thinking that way.

I have been fortunate to have enjoyed the hobby for so long. I love numismatics as much today as I ever did. I do realize though that we are simply curators of objects. We take care of them for a period of time and then pass them along to someone else to curate. It is certainly true – one gets out of the hobby what one contributes to the hobby. It is my hope my collection finds its way into loving hands that care as much as I did for these tokens.

A few field marks, a couple of edge nicks, and cabinet friction on some of the high points, all from handling over the years. Engraved by Thomas Halliday, struck by Edward Thomason at Birmingham, and issued by Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin in support of his vainglorious mission to settle the Magdalens as his personal fiefdom. Proofs of this token are known and do surface from time to time. This example is ex Montreal Stamps & Coins auction, 1992, lot 243.

64. Lauzon Ferry Token. BR 560, a token for use on the Lauzon Ferry between Quebec’s Lower Town and Lévis between 1821 and 1828. A consortium led by the Scotts Presbyterian Sir John Caldwell, which included John Goudie, had the ferry built at Goudie’s shipyard in 1816-17 and put her into service in the fall of 1817. The tokens are either pewter or white metal, probably made after the fashion of contemporary communion tokens, and were in use without a countermark until 1825. See the article on the ferry and its tokens in the 2014 Transactions of the Canadian Numismatic Research Society. This example has suffered environmental damage, so that its surfaces are very rough, and some of the legend and the date may have been re-tooled. Nevertheless, there is no indication that it has been cast. Its weight is 6.73 grams or 103.9 grains. About Good.

74. R.W. Owen Ropery. BR 564, CH LC-18, copper. The rarity of this token is usually explained by Owen having sold out his Montreal rope-making business shortly after the token was issued in 1824. We sold one example in our July 2009 sale of the Rev. Dr. Bernard O’Connor collection as lot 965, graded ICCS Fine-12, for $15,000 and the same piece again as lot 930A in our October 3-4, 2013 sale where it realized $19,000. The two examples in the Stack’s Bowers sale of the John J. Ford, Jr., collection in August 2013, both of which were choice mint state, were hammered down at $45,000 and $37,500 USD. The present example is graded VF by PCGS with some scratches and digs, especially to the obverse through the ship, above the flag at the stern, and at the top foremast. A rare token to begin with and especially so in a presentable grade as here. Ex John Temple.

BR 567, the very rare Hunterstown token, probably issued by William Parker for use in his lumber company store in the village of Hunterstown located on the Rivière-du-Loup above the north shore of the St. Lawrence about halfway between Montreal and Quebec City. This token was much sought after by early collectors and appeared in most major collections. See the article in Jeffrey Hoare Auctions, September 22-23, 2012, lot 268. This example grades ICCS VF-30, but is neatly holed from the obverse at the G of GOODS.

127. 1382 Erroneous Date Counterfeit. BR 872, Courteau 280, CH NS-3B, the key piece among the Nova Scotia counterfeits and traditionally one of the classics in the Canadian token series. While its existence was known to collectors as early as 1875, by 1910 Courteau still only knew of two examples. There were only two in the sales of the massive W.W.C. Wilson Collection between 1925 and 1928. Over the years, many more examples have come to light, but it is still a rare token. Leonard Charles Wyon cut the dies for the Mayflower Penny and Halfpenny of 1856, two of our most aesthetically accomplished tokens. Ralph Heaton and Sons of Birmingham, who struck the tokens, engraved very shallow dies for both denominations because of the hardness of the bronze. As a result, both denominations show many minor strike variations, with missing, incomplete, or doubled numerals and letters. These variations need to be recorded and catalogued.

NOVA SCOTIA MERCHANT NOVA SCOTIA MERCHANT TOKENS TOKENS (BRETON 879-901)(BRETON 879-901)The pre-Confederation tokens issued by Nova Scotia merchants

all appeared between 1814 and 1816. These were the years from the end of the War of 1812 and represented boom economic times for the Province because of the blockade of U.S. ports. The majority of these tokens were issued by hardware merchants or general provisioners in Halifax who made fortunes outfitting new shipping and supplying British naval stores. In addition, they enjoyed a flourishing trade with the ports of the West Indies. The need for coppers “for the convenience of trade” and the existence of the tokens testifies to their commercial success during this period. Of the Broke tokens, Courteau (1910) said: “From an historical point of view this series, although small, should prove interesting to all Canadians and particularly so to Collectors. From the absence of any indication of value these might be looked upon as a medalet rather than a token, though doubtless they passed as currency with the others.

181. Very Rare Anchor & H Halfpenny. Courteau first listed this, as no. 35, among his “The Non-Local Tokens of Canada” in The Numismatist in 1924. Unknown to Breton, but first sold publicly in the 1888 sale of the Gerald Hart Collection, lot 1345. There were examples in the Charles Morris (1912), W.E. Hidden (1914), W.W.C. Wilson (1925, 1926, 1927), Courteau (1944), Richard Buckley (1981), Warren Baker (1987, two specimens), and John Wilkinson (1999) collections among others. The present example is Fine for the issue, struck slightly off-centre, and with more circulation wear to the obverse than the reverse as is usually the case. A rare and desirable token in the Nova Scotia series.

As far as Courteau was concerned in his “The Coins and Tokens of New Brunswick” (1922), his no. 25 among the 1843 pennies only came as a Proof and at the time he wrote he only knew of two examples. In other words, for anyone who collects these tokens by variety, Courteau 25 must be acquired as a Proof. 227. McDermott’s Advertising Token. BR 914, Francis McDermott’s advertising token from King Street, Saint John, brass, about EF, minor surface marks on the reverse, 5.28 grams or 81.5 grains, straight reverse, plain edge. Although McDermott was in business in Saint John for a number of years, Richard Bird, in his Coins of New Brunswick (1993: 43) suggests that McDermott issued his token in 1846, the only year in which he was located on King Street. A rare token and always desirable. The specimen in our sale of the George Thomson Collection, which also graded about EF, but with a couple of edge knocks, sold for $5,500.

considered together, inasmuch as coastal traffic between the two colonies was constant throughout the 19thC and many merchants owned businesses in both. Numismatically as well as commercially, the histories of the two islands are linked. When PEI became saturated with Ships, Colonies & Commerce, Success to the Fisheries, and the Self Government tokens of 1855 and 1857, they were shipped to Newfoundland. The quantities in circulation there hastened the adoption of a local decimal currency. The Fishery Rights piece for Newfoundland was struck by the same manufacturer as the aforementioned PEI tokens, Ralph Heaton & Sons of Birmingham.

246. McCarthy Penny. McCarthy Penny, CH PE-2, the letters P.E.I incuse on an otherwise blank planchet, copper. There is no justification for attributing this piece to Peter McCausland (also spelled MacAusland, or McAuslane), as has usually been the case. Everything, including its likely date of production about 1840, and the identical features with the unique DMC / P.E.I piece, point to Dennis McCarthy of Charlottetown as the issuer. McCarthy’s Charlottetown tinsmith shop was located at the north-west corner of Kent and Great George Streets (the latter street now called University Avenue). This example is rough, with some corrosion and some light verdigris, perhaps from having been buried. It grades VG for the issue and weighs 8.3 grams. 247. Holey Dollar. PEI Holey Dollar, CH PE-1A, Faulkner H.9. Rogers Dollar, 1807 Charles IV Mexico TH. This coin belonged to the PEI collector Wendell Rogers who died in 1993. It was impossible to classify among the different groups of known countermarks because a number of punch marks and gouges have been applied over top of the original countermark of nine or ten rays. One ray can be seen to have escaped the vandal’s punch. The centre hole to the coin is unusually smooth and even. Nevertheless, this appears to be a legitimate Holey Dollar which has been marred by vandalism.

248. PEI Holey Dollar Dump. PEI Dump, CH PE-1A2, Faulkner Gg.1. Fargeon Dump. This Dump is classified among Holey Dollars and Dumps with irregular countermarks. In this case, the mark consists of a circle of ten lines in the form of rectangles which has been applied to the obverse of the Dump. The irregularity of the countermark does not disqualify it as a legitimate piece. It is one of only 12 Dumps to have a claim to legitimacy and as such extremely rare. Very few Dumps have ever been offered for public sale and this is the first one to have been offered since 2003. This Dump was identified as belonging to the important Montreal collector Allan Fargeon in an article by Fred Bowman in The CN Journal for April 1960. It was sold in a Jeffrey Hoare auction, June 323-25, 1995, as lot 685. Except for the countermark opposite the identifiable contour formed by the King’s throat, and the faint remains of the coat of arms on the reverse, the coin has been worn smooth.

266. BR 956, CH NF-2, issued in St. John’s, Newfoundland, by a merchant of Prince Edward Island who had business interests in both places. Peter McAuslane (1772-1842) owned property in Charlottetown, a ship named the Hannah, and a farm at Rustico on what is today Robinson’s Island on the north shore of PEI. His token is excessively rare. The first example turned up in 1878 and was acquired by R.W. McLachlan, who reported on it in The Canadian Antiquarian and Numismatic Journal, VII, 2 (October 1878): 95. McLachlan was subsequently the first to catalogue the token in his Canadian Numismatics (1886) as no. 486. A second specimen did not turn up until 1893. A specimen in the 1925 W.W.C. Wilson Sale, said to be EF – not the present example – sold as lot 619 for the incredible sum of $135, which was some measure of its desirability. It is not certain how many examples exist today. Those few that have appeared in recent years have all been brought out of the ground by metal detectors on PEI and the tokens have suffered accordingly, with cracked planchets and severely corroded surfaces. The present example may be the finest known in private hands, the equal of the specimen in the Bank of Canada Collection. This is the specimen that was plated by Courteau in his “The Coins and Tokens of Newfoundland” in The Numismatist (February 1930), said by him to be in the Ludger Gravel Collection at that time. Howard Gibbs appears to have acquired it from the disposal of the Gravel collection in 1935 and in turn sold it as lot 912 at the 1952 ANA auction where it was purchased by John J. Ford, Jr. It was sold with Ford’s Canadian tokens by Stack’s Bowers in August 2013 as lot 21058 where it was described as Extremely Fine. Some insignificant surface dirt and a tiny carbon spot at LL of ALL on the reverse. Brass, beaded borders, (struck ever so slightly off-centre), straight reverse, plain edge, 19.6 mm, 2.75 grams or 42.5 grains. EF. $35,000-$40,000

The 24 imitation varieties of the Tiffin halfpennies in brass and copper, Courteau nos. 1 to 24, were issued many years after the date 1812 which appears on them. They should be considered together with the majority of the Bust & Harps in brass because newly minted examples of both series were found together in a hoard that was recovered from the St. Lawrence River some years ago. The so-called Tiffin pennies, however, are English tokens and have been part of Canadian collections since the nineteenth century, although there is no evidence that they circulated in colonial Canada.

358. BR 925, CH FT-10B, North West Company token in copper. Holed as usual. PCGS VF, with an indication that the surfaces have been tooled somewhat. As to be expected, there is some porosity, especially on the obverse. However, this is a very desirable example of a token that is much rarer in copper than in brass. It is noteworthy that the hole on the North West token is always applied from the reverse and always in exactly the same spot, through the top right half of the letter H and part of the border, and is always the same size. This precision suggests that the tokens were machine holed before they were distributed. The specimen in the Stack’s Bowers 2013 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. collection, lot 21027, was graded choice VF and brought a hammer price of $18,000. The EF-AU example in our sale of the George Thomson collection in May 2014 realized $26,000 hammer. The Cooper CollectionThe Cooper Collection OF COUNTERMARK TOKENS

Geoffrey Bell Auctions is pleased to offer the first portion of the Richard Cooper Collection, consisting of Part I of his Canadian countermarked collection. This offering will be followed up in October with the second part of his countermarked collection, which together form the largest Canadian collection in existence.

The collection was described in Marked Impressions, published in Montreal in 2006, and Mr Cooper acquired it in its entirety from Warren Baker. Another collection formed by Baker, not included in the book due to having been acquired subsequently was also sold to Richard Cooper. That collection consists of 433 pieces, a good portion of which were purchased from a serious collector of countermarks.

Many of the countermarks have never been offered before, and a number of the same ones, occurring on different undertypes are highlights of the collection as they are often evidence of the types of coins and tokens that circulated in an area at the period of the countermarker’s issue. The Devins & Bolton collection, in particular, is a remarkable assemblage and demonstrates the types of pieces still being encountered in Montreal between late 1862, when the firm commenced, and 1869.

Mr. Cooper, well-known Montreal collector has also consigned the balance of his outstanding Canadian collection which will be offered in four sales, and discussed more fully in the October sale.

Warren Baker in his monumental project on counterstamped coins titled “Marked Impressions”, gave a complete write-up on the firm Devins & Bolton. We have summarized it here with basic information. If you desire additional subject matter, refer to Warren’s book.

Devins studied medicine at McGill University but soon became interested in becoming a chemist and druggist. By 1861, he was in an established business in Montreal, Quebec. The Devins-Bolton partnership was formed in 1862 becoming the largest and most successful of its day.

Devins and Bolton were master merchandisers. They did massive amounts of advertising in local books and newspapers but the thing that enamored them to modern numismatists is the counter-stamping they did on coins. Baker lists close to 350 different tokens, foreign coins, United States decimal coins with the Devins and Bolton countermark. There are surely many more. This form of advertising peaked between 1863 and 1870.

Charlton notes that two distinctive stamps were utilized with Bolton occurring in both large and small print and ampersands that were large and small. All in all, this is a fascinating area of countermark collecting extremely popular with collectors today. This section contains Devins & Bolton countermarked tokens all with the following markings “DEVINS (curved) / & / BOLTON / MONTREAL (curved)”.

Auction Conduct: All our starting bids will be opened at approximately 10% above the second highest mail or computer bid. If there are no mail bids, auctioneer will start the bids at the reserve price, or half of the low estimate, or where possible, call for an opening bid. Advances are at the discretion of the auctioneer. In the event there are identical bids, earliest bid and floor bids will take priority. We reserve the right to withdraw any lot prior to the sale. Grading Standards and Description: The Cataloguers have taken every reasonable measure to ensure that all the lots are as described by Geoffrey Bell Auctions. Many of the lots are third party graded by PCGS, BCS, PMG, ICCS - We feel these are the most recognized grading companies in the industry.

Return Policies: Returns will be accepted by absentee bidders for lots that have been misattributed or incorrectly cata-logued. We guarantee that all items are genuine and we will refund anything that has been misrepresented by the catalogu-ers. Certified grading concerns are to be dealt with through the certified grading company, not Geoffrey Bell Auctions. No returns will be accepted on graded material. All floor sales are final, including those who choose to use our agent. Absolutely no returns will be accepted after 45 days as consignors are then paid in full.

Lot pick-up: Saturday, May 30th, 2015 on the Toronto Coin Expo bourse floor from 10am-4pm. All lots not picked up during the show will be shipped at the bidders expense. We charge actual shipping costs plus $5 per package for packing and processing the order. Insurance is $5 per thousand.

Payment Details: Cheques must clear before shipping; money orders and certified cheques will be verified and shipped within 48 hours of receipt. Credit Card and Paypal payments are accepted at a 3.0% premium to cover fees.
