Gazette OCTOBER 11, 2019 Announcements Many thanks to all the Japanese students and exchange students from Japan who volunteered at last week's Japan Festival at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Without your help, the festival could not have been as successful as it was. The students worked at the children's craft & calligraphy booth, registration, and translated for a calligrapher who performed large-scale calligraphy with music. Special thanks to Sunlit Cafe leaders and UM Japanese dance group. They learned, performed, and instructed the Tokyo Olympic Ondo dance at the festival. You all did a great job and everyone was impressed. – Dr. Yuki Matsuda

Faculty Accomplishments Dr. Ivan Ortega-Santos has received a HARC Angel Award from the Highland Area Renewal Corporation, Inc. (HARC), Memphis. The goal of this award is to recognize individuals who are making a difference in our community. In this case, the award recognizes the work of both graduate and undergraduate students who, as part of Dr Ortega Santos’ project Comunidad901, a service learning initiative, have supported local Hispanic-serving organizations (e.g., Shelby

County Schools, the Community Legal Center, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens or, more recently, the Consulate of Guatemala) by helping break down language barriers.

Dr. Denis D. Grélé presented on Saturday October 5th “The libertine Utopia of Félicia ou mes fredaine: New Values for a Better World,” at the Western Society for French History conference in Bozeman MT.

Dr. Fátima Nogueira has edited Itinerarios de lectura/A Journey in Readership: Homenaje a Cathy L. Jrade with Christina Karageorgou-Bastea and Leila M. Lehnen (Editorial Academia del Hispanismo, 2019). Dr. Nogueira’s chapter “Escenarios de erotización en Delmira Agustina y Marosa di Giorgio” appears in the book. Dr. Diana Ruggiero presented “Integrating cultural competence as World Languages for Specific Purposes into the classroom: The day of the dead, daring to make mistakes, and significant learning: A World Café Workshop” on October 4th, 2019 at the Center for Latin American Studies, Vanderbilt University. Dr. Will Thompson has been nominated to serve on the University’s General Education Committee.
