Deceased Name: MOTORCYCLIST DIES AFTER HITTING DOWNED POWER LINES AFTER A TRUCK ACCIDENTALLY KNOCKED DOWN POWER LINES SATURDAY, JAMES PRESTON BUCHHEIT WAS KILLED ON HIS MOTORCYCLE AFTER CRASHING INTO THEM.

A motorcyclist was killed Saturday evening when he hit power lines dangling above U.S. 1 that had been downed by a tree-trimming truck, according to an eyewitness Tuesday who initially reported the accident to authorities. "The lines were lying maybe 3 or 4 feet in the air over the road" moments before the accident happened, local car salesman Gerald O'Brien recalled. O'Brien was closing up a car lot at All Wholesale All The Time on U.S. 1 at the time of the crash, he said. James Preston Buchheit, 20, of Port St. Lucie, appeared to be hit in the chest or above by the wires that had fallen near Tumblin Kling Road at about 5 p.m., O'Brien said. Buchheit was wearing a helmet with a full-face shield at the time of the crash, according to an initial report by the Florida Highway Patrol, which continues to investigate the accident. Alcohol was not a factor in the incident, the report states. A memorial service for Buchheit will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Roger L. Byrd Funeral Home in Port St. Lucie. A driver from a tree-cutting service, identified by the FHP as Michael William Hulme, 20, of Fort Pierce, was working on the grounds of a nearby Nissan dealership during the day. The dealership had been closed Saturday, while the company was holding an off-site sale, said Chris Wellings, owner of Wellings Nissan. According to the FHP report, shortly before the accident, Hulme's extended truck boom snagged the lines while he turned onto Tumblin Kling Road from U.S. 1. Hulme had reportedly lowered the bucket on his 1977 GMC bucket truck, when the boom became stuck in the up position. "It was about 5 o'clock and I was taking the balloons down from the lot, because we have balloons up every Saturday," O'Brien said. "I heard a great big noise and noticed the truck in the road and saw that it was stopped." He said he soon realized the loud noise was the sound of a utility pole across the street breaking after the truck's boom hit wires, he said. There was a second "popping" noise when the boom of the truck struck a second set of power lines that hung over Tumblin Kling Road, he added. Wellings said he routinely uses MB Lawn Service and Janitorial, of Fort Pierce, to take care of the property's landscaping. Jeronimo Mejia, owner of MB Lawn Service, said he contracted out to Treasure Coast Tree Services for the Saturday job. "The trees had grown so much now, so we needed to use a bucket truck," Mejia said. "I actually went down there to check and see if they were finished, but I had trouble getting through. That's when I found out there had been an accident." He said he spoke briefly with a supervisor from Treasure Coast Tree Services who was at the scene, and said he learned the crew was "shook up" by the accident. Treasure Coast Tree Services did not return calls Tuesday. Between 2,000 and 3,000 utility customers - as far south as the Savannas State Preserve - experienced a temporary loss of power from Saturday's accident, according to Mac Hamilton, Fort Pierce Utilities Authority spokesman. Florida Power & Light Co. reported 13 customers lost power, according to an FPL spokeswoman. Staff writer Jason Geary contributed to this report. [email protected]

Deceased Name: NORMA BUCHHEIT ART TEACHER AND ANIMAL LOVER

Norma Buchheit always prided herself on being a special sort of teacher at Kenwood Elementary in Kendall. When a white cat ''adopted'' the school, Buchheit seized on the opportunity to teach children about caring for animals. Buchheit, who died last month at age 78, tried to leave a legacy of caring. For 20 years, she taught art at Kenwood Elementary after arriving in Dade County in 1960. She had previously taught at West Seneca Central High School in New York, where she grew up. She also had been a commercial artist who owned and operated The Paint Box shop in Buffalo, N.Y., with her husband, Richard Buchheit. ''She was a very unique person,'' her niece Regina Ninan said. ''She was very intellectual, very giving and caring. She liked to work with art.'' She also liked working with children. ''She liked to teach,'' her niece said. Spooky, Kenwood's white cat, used to belong to the school janitor. When the janitor left, Spooky stayed -- sometimes sleeping in a basket next to a teacher's desk. Buchheit took it upon herself to raise money for ''The Spooky Social Fund'' -- a tin can on her desk that usually generated 75 cents to $5 a week. It paid for Spooky's food and vet bills. ''She had children donating cans of food,'' her niece said. ''She wanted the kids to get involved.'' Throughout the years, students helped take care of Spooky. When the cat died, it was buried on school grounds and the children had a memorial ceremony. Buchheit retired from teaching in 1981. After her husband died, she returned in 1989 to her native New York state to be closer to her family. In addition to her niece, she is survived by her sister June Dustow and niece Kim Michel. Services were held in New York.

Seattle Times, The (WA) - May 21, 1995

Deceased Name: NICHOLAS BUCHHEIT GENTLY TENDED HIS FUCHSIAS AND FRIENDS IN NEED

Nicholas Buchheit would have loved the idea of his "life celebration" set for 1 p.m. June 4 in Kent Senior Center: Neighbors bearing home-grown bouquets, Southern barbecue and co-workers recalling his bailouts of buddies throughout the year From fuchsias to fragile psyches, Mr. Buchheit nurtured them well. The lanky Arkansas native, a Boeing aeromachinist for 38 years until retiring in 1994, once grew 100 varieties of fuchsia at his home. "Imperial Crown" and "Cardinal" were favorites for their huge, double-ruffled flowers. He founded Green River Fuchsia Society and displayed his best work at its shows. Mr. Buchheit also was a Democratic Party precinct committeeman when he died of cancer May 13 at age 63. "He was an outspoken man for the underdog," said his wife of 13 years, Bernice Buchheit of Kent. "That's what the Democrats are, and that was his nature." Her husband was active in the Alliance for the Mentally Ill for many years. His stepson, Douglas Marsland, who died in 1992, was mentally ill. Several times he welcomed mentally ill people to live in the Buchheit home while they were awaiting treatment or transition to another care facility. "He did a lot of advocating on their behalf," his wife said, "and educated people at his job about mental illness. He'd take in stacks of folders on schizophrenia and paranoia." Mr. Buchheit also helped Boeing colleagues who got laid off; he kept an eye out for job openings they might fill, then did what he could to help them get back to work. Born to dairy farmers who later ran a sawmill, he joined the Air Force in the Korean War and trained as a machinist. He hired on at Boeing, which sent him around the United States in the heyday of its Minuteman (missile) program. Mr. Buchheit also was giving in death: His brain, like that of his stepson, went to Harvard Medical School's brain bank for research. Other survivors include his children Rick, Bothell; Marc, La Habra, Calif.; and Carrie Lee, Carnation - all from a previous marriage; stepdaughter Alice March, Seattle; sisters Nadia Friend, Carolyn Buck, Diane Hall and brother Ned - all of Hot Springs, Ark.; and five grandchildren. Remembrances may be made to Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Washington State, 4305 Lacey Blvd., Suite 11, Lacey, WA, 98503, or to Group Health Hospice, 3901 S. Fife St., Tacoma, WA, 98409

Deceased Name: SUE BUCHHEIT HENNESSY HOME HEALTH CARE NURSE

Sue Buchheit Hennessy, a registered nurse in home health care for nearly two decades, died Saturday after a long struggle with ovarian cancer. She was 67. A native of Savannah, Ga., Hennessy moved to Miami in 1953. She and her husband John fell in love with Miami the year before on their honeymoon. Hennessy began her nursing career in the late 1960s after earning an associate degree in nursing at Miami-Dade Community College. Frustrated with the limited knowledge of an associate degree, she decided to get her bachelor's degree in nursing. In the late '70s, she enrolled at Florida International University, the same year that the eldest of her six children went to college. She worked at Home Health Services of Metro-Dade and was the director of patient care service for six years. To challenge herself in her spare time, she would write articles for different nursing magazines. "She was the perfect nurse, very caring," said her husband John Hennessy. "She would always get appreciation cards and letters from former patients." After she retired, Hennessy and her husband enjoyed traveling the world. In addition to her husband, she is survived by children Johnny, Timmy and Peggy Hennessy, Sally Tomlinson and Martha Padilla; sisters Mozelle Miller and Terry Ryan; brothers Phillip and Frankie Buchheit; and seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 10 tonight at Bennett and Sons Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass begins at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in North Miami, followed by burial at Southern Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gilda Radner Familial Ovarian Cancer Institute, Elm & Carlton Streets, Buffalo, N.Y.

San Jose Mercury News (CA) - June 3, 1991

Deceased Name: LLOYD BUCHSER SR., EDUCATOR

When Lloyd Buchser was a boy, he and his brothers and sisters marched into the old Willow Glen Grammar School to the beat of a large triangular gong. Lloyd Buchser and seven of his siblings continued to march to school for much of their lives -- as teachers and administrators at campuses throughout the Santa Clara Valley. They were members of the well-known "teaching Buchser family" of 10 children who grew up on a family farm at Minnesota and Bird avenues. Mr. Buchser died Wednesday at 82 after a long bout with Parkinson's disease, but the family teaching tradition lives on. Although only three of Mr. Buchser's siblings -- all sisters -- are now alive, his wife of almost 30 years, Josephine Szulik Buchser, is a home economics teacher at Steinbeck Middle School in San Jose. Daughter Grace Bates is a teacher in Sunnyvale. Son Lloyd Jr. teaches in Evergreen and son Patrick is working toward a teaching credential. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives are still teachers throughout the county. Mr. Buchser's brother Emil, who died in 1969, was a retired superintendent of the Santa Clara Unified School District and a high school in that district was named for him. That campus is now Santa Clara High School. Another brother, Herman, who died in 1988, was former president of San Jose City College and the first superintendent of the San Jose Junior College District. Mr. Buchser, the second youngest child, had three brothers and six sisters. They were the children of Swiss-German immigrant parents who instilled a strong sense of responsibility and respect for education, said his sister, Emma Holthouse of San Jose. ''When we were dismissed from school we had to report home. We had our duties to do," Holthouse said. When he was very young, Mr. Buchser tended the cows, horses, rabbits and chickens on the ranch, and when he got a little older he drove the tractor, his sister recalled. ''We even had our own baseball team, made up of just the boys and girls in the family. We didn't have to look long for amusement." Mr. Buchser began his teaching career in San Leandro, where he taught shop classes, math and geometry. Later, he spent seven or eight years as principal of Roosevelt Junior High. He then was named director of the Regional Vocational Center in San Jose, which used to offer vocational classes to students from throughout the county. He held that post until his retirement in 1976. ''He loved children," his widow recalled. "He was a very strict disciplinarian, but he had a kind heart. He would take money out of his pocket to buy kids something if they needed it." Mr. Buchser was a Rotary Club member. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a talented woodworker who built furniture for the family, his widow said. He and one of his sons once built an 18-foot mahogany fishing boat. Another great joy used to be trips to the Buchser family compound at Lake Tahoe, where they celebrated birthdays and enjoyed each others' company every summer, his widow said. Lloyd Buchser Sr. (box)Born: April 24, 1909, San Jose, Calif. (box)Survived by: Wife, Josephine Szulik Buchser of San Jose; sons Lloyd Jr., Richard and Patrick, all of San Jose; daughter, Grace Bates of San Jose; sisters Emma Holthouse of San Jose, Angelina Steiner of Galt and Dorothy Christiansen of Los Altos; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Staten Island Advance (NY) - November 7, 2006

Deceased Name: JOSEPH BUCKHEIT, 89

Date of Death: 10/23/2006 Firefighter, Navy radarman played handball Former Staten Islander Joseph John Buckheit, Sr., 89, a retired firefighter who served in the U.S. Navy, died Oct. 23 while tending his garden at home in The Colony, Texas. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Buckheit was a graduate of James Madison High School. Brooklyn was also where he wooed and wed Violet Ziemanek. Early in their marriage, they moved to Castleton Corners to rear their two sons, Joseph Jr. and Paul. They moved to Brighton Heights in 1956. Mr. Buckheit was a proud military veteran, having served in the Navy during World War II as a radarman, third class, from 1944 to 1946. He was stationed in Hawaii. Descended from a long line of civil servants, Mr. Buckheit began his career with the New York City Fire Department at the age of 21. He rose through the ranks to the position of battalion chief by age 40. "He always had a regulation book nearby and studied every spare minute," remembered longtime friend and fellow firefighter Chris Caccese. Continuing in the tradition of serving with New York's Bravest were Mr. Buckheit's son, Paul, who retired from Ladder Co. 78, New Brighton, and Mr. Buckheit's grandson, Richard, who is a lieutenant with Engine Co. 249, Brooklyn. After 27 years, Mr. Buckheit retired in 1965. He loved the horses and enjoyed spending leisure time at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens with his brothers and sisters. Mr. Buckheit was a fierce competitor on the handball court and could often be seen playing pick-up games in various Island parks. Dedicated to his family and known for his generous spirit, Mr. Buckheit will be remembered fondly by his granddaughters, with whom he had shared his two-family home on Castleton Avenue. "Pop made personal sacrifices for our benefit," recalled granddaughter Rita Buckheit. Reflecting on the life of his grandfather, Joe Buckheit added, "He was a brave and strong man who lived a simple life." After the death of his wife, Violet, in 1984, Mr. Buckheit relocated in 1985 to Texas, where he remarried. He enjoyed the warm weather and was content tinkering in his toolshed and working in his garden. Mr. Buckheit was healthy and active until his sudden death, just three weeks before his 90th birthday. In addition to his granddaughter and grandson, he is survived by his wife, Charlene Paul; two sons, Joseph Jr. and Paul; two brothers, John and Charles; two sisters, Charlotte Cahill and Madeline Connolly; eight grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Burial took place Oct. 27 in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Texas. Funeral arrangements were handled by Dalton & Sons Funeral Home, Lewisville, Texas.
