GAZETTE Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of Rosebank (local and international)

I begin by acknowledging the tremendous amount of work by staff who assisted our Year 12 students to ensure they were well prepared, comfortable, informed and supported during the first week of the HSC Trial exams. I also commend our young men and woman who have committed themselves to study and prepare diligently which is the biggest sign of appreciation to those who love them. Finally and most importantly I express our collective gratitude to Year 12 families who are offering support, challenge, patience and care for their loved ones during these times of heightened effort and alertness. Following another week of exams the students will return to school to be welcomed and provided meaningful feedback from their teachers and care team as the stepping-stone for the next phase of preparation for the HSC. We are committed to creating an environment of authentic support, affirmation and direction to assist with further developing resilience and stamina. It is a wonderful team effort and runs core to the Mission of the College ‘in establishing a school in the Lord’s service’.

The weeks of Term 3 are always bursting with activities and learning. This week is no different.

The College staff and visiting students and host families were hosted to a brunch on Saturday morning by the Don Tai Community Association at Rhodes to welcome and acknowledge the growing partnership with this Chinese community here and in China. The IBSSSEP also arranged a journey up to Palm Beach on Friday to show off our beautiful coastline and beaches and to give our international visitors a little more history of Sydney, including a trek up to the lighthouse and a private tour of the historic cottage and lighthouse provided by knowledgeable, passionate volunteers. The week ended with our annual ski trip. Students and staff enjoyed three wonderful days on the snow and I am sure we will hear of their bruises and bumps on Monday.

This coming Saturday evening the Rosebank P&F will host their major fundraiser for the year. Each year we appreciate the effort and commitment of this dedicated and generous group of parents who organise a wonderfully fun evening of trivia and dance and raise much needed funds to supplement furniture and specialist equipment for your children. Your support of this function is much appreciated. I look forward to catching up with those that are attending following my recent return from leave.

On Sunday, the CAPA faculty will contribute to the entertainment program from 10 -11 am at Ferragosto Italian Cultural Festival 2018 at Five Dock. This important community event is always a great family day and you can support our students and staff.I want to express our thank you to the Pastoral Team who have established and managed the popular lunch time clubs. I am so thrilled that these fun opportunities exist to create meeting spaces for students with similar interests. In these times of saturated virtual social media, the College is

making a serious effort to offer students a traditional alternative and traditional approach to human social contact. It takes an enormous amount of effort to sustain this program and we are deeply indebted to the young student leaders, staff and Ms Clarke the instigator of this program.

At the heart of Good Samaritan Benedictine life is the call to “listen with the ear of the heart”. This beautiful statement is rich in meaning, purpose and outcome. It is often illustrated with the comment that we have two ears and one mouth so we were designed to listen twice as much as to speak. However, this invitation is a call to a much deeper understanding as captured by the phrase discernment or wise listening. It requires us to have both an open heart and open mind and to be present to the moment with the respect it deserves. Listening has become an increasingly difficult process as we address a wider set of tasks and an increasingly noisy world. It is important that adults give witness to this virtue and demand a similar approach from their children.

To help develop a habit of listening the following suggestions based on advice from Dan Rockwell may be useful:

• Show profound respect by being attentive, facing the person and removing distractions including devices.

• Understand the person’s concerns, and if you don’t know what they are, ask them.

• Apply the Golden Rule: How would you like others to listen to you?

• Identify what the person needs to hear rather than what you need to say. It is not about you!

• Generally attempt to be brief. Plan what you want to say.

• As difficult as it may be, avoid making judgements nor reference to possible motives.

• Be explorative in your approach. Ask more ‘what’ questions and fewer ‘how’ questions.

• Invite reflection: “What do you think is important”, “What lessons are there for you?” “What might you do differently if the circumstances are to reoccur.?”

A culture of deep listening to the one another will develop the life-long skill of deep listening to oneself. This could be one of the great-est gifts we share with each other.

From the Assistant PrincipalRecently I read an article published for parents from Youth Safe regarding ‘Helping Teenagers Celebrate Safely’. It reinforced that as children move into the teenage years that they tend to want to go out and attend parties. While this is a normal part of growing up and the want for more responsibility there are some risks involved. There are some helpful areas listed below that hopefully help your teenager manage these risks through discussion and planning.

• Check where your teenager is going and talk to them about ways to manage possible risks in at the destination/location of the celebration

• The transport to an event is often planned but getting home is sometimes forgotten or brushed over when discussing about the party. There tends to be more questions about who will be attending.

• Going out, friends are safer arriving and leaving together – they can help each other if something goes wrong. Have contact numbers for your friend’s parents as a back up when going out.

• If their plans fall through, or if they feel unsafe or unsure, let your teenager know that it is OK to contact you for help.

• Talk about alcohol and drugs together. Unfortunately these sub-stances may be present at the party they attend. Give them strategies and discuss the issues associated with alcohol and drugs with your child.

• There is much more useful information on the Youth Safe web-site.

I include part of a letter that is being sent out to the student body this week. This letter is addressed to the students and will be a focus for them this week and beyond.

“Being a part of a community means that you have connections, that you belong and that you have an instant support network. Our community includes students, staff, parents and alumni. It is important that all members work together to look after each other and assist where needed. Being a ‘voice’ for not only ourselves and others, takes great courage and it is our responsibility to speak up for those members in our community that might be struggling and in need of assistance. Should you feel that there is someone you need to assist, or if you need to ask for assistance, please speak directly to your House Coordinator.

As part of a community, there are certain expectations of inclusion. As a member of the student body, you are entrusted to uphold the College’s, your House and your own good name, both inside and outside of the College. As such, the way you present yourself, act and speak, represents not only who you are, but what Rosebank is, to the wider community. Therefore, the simple expectations surrounding uniform, grooming and appearance are non-negotiable, as outlined in the College Uniform Code on page 21 of the College Diary. These standards are very clear and easy to follow. We trust that each day you carry yourself with pride and self-confidence, which in turn allows the College to feel proud of all of its members.

Year 7 Character Day - 04 September 2018

It’s on again! As part of Literacy and Numeracy week at Rosebank, the SRSC invites all students in Year 7, (and any staff) to come to school dressed in a character of their choice. And yes it relates to books! What a fun way to spend the first Tuesday of Spring and celebrate this special week.RELEASE YOUR INNER CHARACTER!!!!

From Enrolments A couple of courtesy reminders

Application deadline for current and ex-student (Alumni) families intending to enrol for Year 7 2021, is end of Term 4 this year - Wednesday 12 December 2018.

Current parents intending to change schools whether at the end of a term, or for 2019 must provide a month’s notice to the Registrar.

Any enquiries can be directed to 9713-3100 or [email protected]

The College uniform is designed and sold in the manner it is to be worn. No alterations to the uniform are acceptable or tolerated without permission from the College. For example, the College sport trackpants are not sold with elastic at the leg cuffs.

We also remind you that the Sports Uniform is only to be worn on a Thursday, or on other special occasions, which is communicated by the College to the student body. Once you have arrived on the school property in the morning, students are not permitted to leave the school grounds, without permission from College staff. Students who do not follow this regulation, jeopardise their safety and the College’s duty of care.

We trust that you will all take responsibility to ensure that you are representing yourselves and Rosebank with pride every day, adhering to the clear standards and expectations, which the College has set.”

I look forward to the coming weeks.Paul Hardwick Assistant Principal

Character Day – Save the Date (Year 7 only)As part of Literacy and Numeracy Week at Rosebank, the SRSC invites all students in Year 7 to come to school dressed as their favourite book character on Tuesday 4 September.

There will be a most imaginative costume competition which will be judged during homeroom and book gift vouchers to be won for best female and male students of EACH House! The best overall female and male students will also win house points! More information will come, but in the meantime have a think about which character you would like to be and come and see us for more information. The costume doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive and an imagination goes far!

Come and have a chat to Miss Lawrence or me if you have any questions or need some inspiration. Miss Lawrence is creating a book display in the SRSC which will give students some ideas for props and costumes.

Here is some inspiration for you from last year:

Exchange Students recount their memories of their time in Sydney

We are Pablo, Pau, Josepmaria & Jaume and we come from Escolania de Montserrat, a school located in Catalonia.Escolania de Montserrat is a music boarding school placed in the Montserrat Mountain next to the Santa Maria de Montserrat abbey, where we sing twice a day.

In our school, we do a double academic curriculum: in the morning we have normal subjects and in the afternoon we do music:24 hours a week. Everyone plays two instruments; the piano and one from the orchestra. It is a boarding school, but you can go home Friday afternoon and return Sunday morning.

We have lots of concerts around Catalonia and sometimes, around the world. We have travelled sharing our music and culture to places like the USA, Russia, China, Poland and most countries in Europe.

Our country is Catalonia, one of the ancient nations of the world. It is situated on the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. We have our language, we talk Catalan. Nevertheless, we learn Castilian & English. We have visited many places in Sydney: The Blue Mountains, Bondi Beach, Darling Harbour and The Opera House, we truly love Sydney and it has been exciting to live with an Australian family. We have shared our cultures and food, the school… in conclusion, sharing our lives here in Australia.

We are glad we got to show you a little bit of our music in the last school assembly. Seeing how life is in another Benedictine school in another part of the world, very far from home, is really interesting. We lived 5 years in a Benedictine school in Montserrat.

We are really glad to have the opportunity to discover a bit of Australia and to attend Rosebank College. We have met lots of wonderful people and it has been an unforgettable experience.

We want to thank all the families who have hosted us, we have felt loved just like back home. Thank you!We would also like to say thank you too to all the people in the school, teachers, students, staff and especially to Ms Barron, she has helped us every time we have needed someone to guide us, Thank you!

It has been a pleasure to share all these good moments and new experiences, we will have them in our heart for the rest of our lives, Thank you and see you again Australia!!!Pablo, Pau, Josepmaria & Jaume
