From the Principal VOLUME NO. 18 – JUNE 19 2017 GAZETTE Dear Parents, We certainly were blessed on Friday. With the prediction for rain running at 90% for the week it was comforting to know that it fell to 20% in the end and in fact did not occur before all got away safely at the end of the day. What made Friday unique? The College walking into St Mary’s Cathedral? The extraordinary music, singing, dancing and liturgy? The words of welcome and encouragement from Bishop Terry Brady? Our significant guests and friends of Rosebank joining us? The inspiring words of Fr Paul Durkin’s homily? The commissioning of the 2017/2018 leaders? Perhaps the inspiring words of the new College Captains? Or was it the spectacular 150 th photo in front of the Cathedral? Was it the gathering in the Domain for lunch? Perhaps it was the walk through the Botanical Gardens or the boarding of the ferries and the leisurely journey past Bennelong Point and Circular Quay (the landing site of the original white settlers) under the Bridge, up Sydney Harbour and past Goat Island, onto Parramatta River then to Cabarita. Or perhaps all of these and more. The cooperation and pride of all the students. The words of encouragement, congratulations and commendation of the public as we moved en mass past the city. The care and organisation of all the staff. The detailed planning and thoroughness by so many. All in all a great day so fitting for one of the oldest catholic schools in Australia to celebrate its direct links with Bishop Bede Polding and the Catholic Church in the early life of the colony of Sydney. A fitting day to highlight the contribution of Rosebank and the early educators who governed and worked so hard to establish a school in the Lord’s Service and in service to the local community. A day fitting to celebrate the contribution Rosebank has made to the Arts in Australia and overseas as well as contributions to education, sciences and business. I hope that the collection of photos included here signal the fun and enjoyment we all had on this unique day. I thank the students for their patience, cooperation, talent and leadership on this day. I thank all staff for their extraordinary level of preparation and active supervision to ensure we all travelled safely and returned home in one piece. We are so grateful for the many families who were able to find time in their busy schedule to attend and be part of this unique and special event. It was certainly packed! We congratulate the families whose children have been appointed to leadership positions. I am sorry for our delay in returning home on Friday and any inconvenience to parents that they may have experienced and I am most grateful for your patience and understanding in this matter. It’s not always that we move and cater for nearly 1400 people around Sydney. We now return to the routine of school life, as we come to the end of Semester One 2017. It has been a semester full of great achievement, wonderful gatherings, extraordinary leadership, creativity and innovation galore and a high level of skill.

GAZETTE Dear Parents,

We certainly were blessed on Friday.

Or was it the spectacular 150th photo in front of the Cathedral?

We celebrate the achievements of our Theatresports team who on Sunday competed against the top eight NSW school teams. While they were not successful they have worked hard preparing for the completion and to reach this level in the first year of our involvement in the competition is an extraordinary achievement. We congratulate Ms Clark and her innovated team of Molly Hayes, Matthew D’Agostino, Emily Bukureshliev, James Beaumont and Enzo Casmiri and thank parents for their ongoing support and encouragement. A most entertaining afternoon exhibiting wonderful skills.

There is so much to be grateful for and yet so much more that we need and can do. The College grows constantly in its confidence and pride. Not an ego centred inwardly looking pride but one of humble service to each other, to our God and to the Community. The College is also proud to be part of and draws much wisdom and inspiration from its Good Samaritan Benedictine family. We thank God for all the gifts we have received.

We are also mindful that not all families, staff or students are in a good space at the moment. Illness and anxiety and grief and confusion is the experience of a number of our community. So we pause and pray for their wellbeing, so that they are restored to good and wholesome health and that they feel supported as is needed.

This is the last newsletter for the Semester. We pray for the safe journeying and activities of the all over the coming break. We will celebrate the work of our Dance Ensembles on Tuesday, we have students travelling on immersions, we have all staff engaged in significant PD for a week, we have students attending work experience, we have families and staff travelling overseas and interstate, we have staff running HSC study programs, we will be welcoming our International Benedictine Short Stay Exchange students during the break, we will continue to improve the College facilities, we will be preparing for the Gala Dinner and we will be preparing for the Blessing and Opening of the Downside. Life is so busy and yet so rewarding. Thank you for your support and encouragement.

Dates for the Diary

Tuesday 20 June HSC Dance Showcase

Friday 23 June Last Day of Term 2

Monday 17 July First Day of Term 3

Saturday 29 July Sesquicentenary Gala Dinner

Dear Families,Please be reminded that if you wish to withdraw your child from the College, notification in writing, advising the student’s withdrawal must be given to the Principal. A full term or 10 weeks notice (whichever is the shortest) is required, otherwise a full term’s fees will be charged. This applies to students leaving mid-term.

From The Assistant PrincipalLast Friday the community celebrated 150 years of Good Samaritan education at Rosebank College. We had a fantastic celebration through the liturgy at St Mary’s Cathedral. It truly was a great time to be part of the Rosebank Community. Plenty more is written in Mr Galea’s section of the newsletter.

Awareness and SafetyAs we travel to and from school, we are mindful of our surroundings and the safety of all members of our community. Here are a few tips to remember as we commute between home and school.

• Stay alert, and keep iPods turned off, so you can hear what’s going on around you.

• Make sure that you never walk away from parents or friends without telling them first.

• Avoid talking to people you do not know especially when parents are not around.

• If you think someone is following you, cross the road or go to a place with lots of people around, like a bus stop or shop.

• When travelling by bus, try to use bus stops on busy roads.

• Keep mobile phones and other valuables out of sight.

• Don’t be afraid to speak up if you feel you might be in danger.

Teaching and LearningWe are learning every day and growing individually, and as a community. I would encourage our students to speak out if they see things happening in our school which are not consistent with our values. It is not good enough to be the silent observer. Each of us needs to take responsibility for making our school a place where every member feels welcomed and accepted. Once we accept the responsibility for changing ourselves, we will begin to see changes in our community and ultimately in our world.

Picking up and dropping off students before and after schoolI would like to remind parents that double parking anywhere is against the law but more particularly very dangerous within a school zone. It is important that parents and visitors to the College follow the road rules regardless of how inconvenient this could be at times. As you would be aware our site is extremely busy. Parents are asked not to drop off, or pick up, their children in the car park from 7.30 am to 3.40 pm. The gate will be closed at various times so we can maintain the safety of our students. Everyone’s cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.Mr Paul Hardwick

Dear Parents,

Please check that your child has re-turned all their textbooks and novels to the Book Room. Most students have been very cooperative, however there are still quite a few outstanding items to be returned. Students will not be is-sued with further resources until these matters are resolved.

On behalf of the Book Room, we wish all our families a wonderful holiday break.

McLaughlin House NewsDragon Boating Champions

Three McLaughlin students have been selected to represent Australia at the 13th World Nations Dragon Boat Championships.

Iain Sullivan (McLaughlin SS1), Ben Lincoln (McLaughlin SS1) and Vanessa Giardina (McLaughlin MS3) will be heading to Divonne-les-Bain, France this July to represent our nation in this dynamic sporting event.

Between them, these students have been actively involved in Dragon Boating for a number of years, having represented teams such as the Sydney Zodiacs and the NSW Junior Dragon Boating Team.

Dragon Boat racing is endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission as an elite sport. There are a number of Rosebank students who are currently participating in Dragon Boating at a representative level; many of them having had their introduction to this sport via Rosebank’s Co-curricular program. A special acknowledgment should be made of Mr Anthony Taylor. His vision and planning have been instrumental in introducing many of our elite Dragon Boaters to the sport.

Our three representatives, Iain, Ben and Vanessa, have undertaken a gru-elling training regime to reach this level of competition and we are proud of their achievements.

McLaughlin House wishes our star athletes all the best for the upcoming championships!

Next Top Models

Vanessa (McLaughlin MS1) & Alana (McLaughlin MS2) Grasso were selected from over 450 hopeful applicants to take part in the recent Sydney Kidz Fashion Week Launch & Media Showcase.

Kidz Fashion Week showcases the latest in kids’ fashion in a way that sup-ports diversity and encourages children of all backgrounds to take the stage and walk.

We congratulate these sisters on their success. They have only been mod-elling for a few years now and we hope to see them more of them on the catwalk in the future!

Science NewsOn Wednesday 7 June, 24 students, from Year 12 and 11 Chemistry, made their way to the Seymour Centre to hear Dr Karl Kruszelnicki explore the world of conspiracy theories, gravitational waves and how chocolate and coffee prove the existence of God. He took us on a real mind stretch and introduced many new concepts all presented in good humour such as why scientific research has found a link between walking through a doorway and forgetting why you walked in the room and how the world is ruled by an alien lizard species. Dr Karl then left us with a few life tips: always tilt your head to the right when going in for a kiss among others. Overall it was a great experience, it was great fun and a truly entertaining night. I would say that it was also wonderful learning experience, but really it was just a people with a passion for Science, having a great time.David ChampScience Curriculum Captain

First day of Community Service at the Cottage, I didn’t know what to expect. Three gruelling hours of hard core gardening or standing around unsure of what exactly to do; this obviously wasn’t the case. Upon arrival, we were told about what the Cancer Survivorship Centre was, its safety regulations, and intriguing events that it organized.

The Cancer Survivorship Cottage is a place where cancer patients come as part of their therapy. It is removed from the hospital, and the disheartening energy from its clinical environment. It gives patients a happy place where they can sit outside in the sun with a nice cup of tea and listen to the birds sing or join art therapy, music therapy, yoga & other classes. Healing of the mind is just as important as healing of the body. Physical and creative activity in such a supported environment helps with all aspects of recovery.

The Centre is holding two fundraisers this year, one is ‘Uplifting’ (Sun Oct 22) which will include entertainments & a range of market stalls (just in time for Christmas shopping!). These markets are a good place to spend a girls’ day out, (but guys can come too) there will be fabulous activities and shopping at the handmade trinkets and clothing stalls. The other event is a classical concert with choirs and the Strathfield

Symphony Orchestra (also known as the ‘Other SSO’). This year it is on the 15th of September, and from what we hear it would be a big mistake to miss it. We’ll tell you more about these later.

After our orientation at this cute, little cottage (I got excited by the Paperbark tree); Ella Batchelor, Angelica Pertsoulis, Jake Pertsoulis, Jacinta Morrissey, Gabriel Buckland-Willis, Lydia Spiteri, Anna Lo Presti and I (Courtney Goodman) got straight into weeding the garden beds. Two of Year 10’s were there too, Kasey Spratt & Daniel Navan. The hours flew by in the blink of an eye and before any of us knew, it was time for a Tea Break. We were treated to a delicious Orange and Chocolate cake baked by Karen and chatted about different arty products we could make; issues to do with the government and the environment; and about our cats. Then we were back out in the garden trying to beat the clock, and dispose of as much weeds and dead plants as possible before it was time to head back home.

I am so excited to go back to the Cancer Survivorship Cottage to garden when it’s sunny and do craft when it rains. Thank you Ms Sinclair for organising this for us, I can’t wait to go back. Courtney Goodman Year 9
