NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

Dear Globe Guilders, It is our great pleasure to thank each of you for the countless hours of service you have given to the Globe and the Guilders in 2015, the 60th Anniversary of your extraordinary support of the Globe. The staff, board, patrons, program participants, MFAs and everyone else who is touched by the Globe benefits tremendously from your generosity and dedication, for which we are truly grateful. Barry and his wife, Hilit, had a wonderful time at your festive Awards Night, and he proudly ac-cepted your $117,000 gift on behalf of the Globe. Thank you! The Globe’s 80th Anniversary year has been one full of successes. From The Twenty-seventh Man and The Comedy of Errors to the box office record-breaking Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, audiences have expressed their appreciation for the work on our stages. Our Globe for All program, which we began last year to bring professional Shakespeare free of charge to underserved communities throughout the county, will visit even more locations in this, its second year. Additionally, our Humanities programs are thriving with our In Conversation and Subject Matters series, as well as Insights Seminars and the return of the New Voices Festival, our complimentary play reading series, which will begin Janu-ary 15. We know that Craig would have been very proud of the Globe in his 100th year, and we hope that you are too. As we remember all of the good in 2015, we also reflect on the loss of Margi, a wonderful leader and a beautiful person. She was a bright light and a joy to know, and everyone at the Globe will miss her. We send the warmest of wishes to you and your families for a Happy New Year, and we will see you in January as we kick off another 80 years.

Sincerely Yours, Barry Edelstein Michael G. Murphy Artistic Director Managing Director

On Thursday, November 5, Neiman Marcus hosted a breakfast to launch its 2015 “Love to Give” Shop

Collection. Many Globe friends and supporters attended the morning event, of which the Globe is proud

to have been the beneficiary. After Neiman Marcus Vice President and General Manager Tom Melody

and Globe Major Gifts Officer and Theatre Liaison to the Globe Guilders Rachel Plummer welcomed the

guests, Globe Associate Producer Eric Louie spoke about the Globe’s upcoming productions and com-

munity programs. Everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast…and then went on to shop!

COMPANY CALLS - MEET AND GREETS Just when we thought we were fin-

ished for the year, we were asked

to hold a meet and greet for the

Globe For All cast, of which many

are former Globe MFA students,

who are staging Much Ado About

Nothing, and the representatives of

the various community partners

where this traveling show will be

performed. As always, our wonder-

ful Globe Guilders rose to the occa-

sion and hosted everyone on Octo-

ber 15 with our usual delicious fare.

Pictures on following page.

For the first time, we were asked to

do something special for the begin-

ning of rehearsals for Dr. Seuss'

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Our great Guilders brought dozens

and dozens of cookies on October

20 for the entire cast. The kids loved

it! And, there was no shortage of

adult cast members lined up at the

cookie buffet. We all had a wonder-

ful time and hope this can become a

new tradition for future “Grinch”

productions. Thanks, everyone, for

your help in making these fun

events come to life!!

We have two meet and greets com-

ing up: January 12 for Metromaniacs

and January 19 for The Last Match.

Please contact me if you would like

to participate.

1 2 3 Why should you attend CAVORT 2016 in Louisville March 18 - 20? Louis-

ville itself is a gem of a city and it’s a well-kept secret that it’s, “more than

the Kentucky Derby”. Actors Theatre will be hosting us and within walk-

ing distance is “Museum Row” with the Louisville Slugger factory and mu-

seum, Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, the Kentucky Museum of Art

and Craft, the Muhammed Ali Center, the Louisville Science Center &

IMAX featuring “The Kentucky Show”, and more. Participants will be able

to pre-register for a pre-conference tour on Friday and visit the Kentucky

Derby Museum and Jim Beam Distillery.

Actors Theatre is located in a national Historic Landmark and has been

providing Louisville with award-winning theatre in its three-theatre com-

plex for over fifty years. It has held the Ten-Minute Play contest since 1989

and conducts an annual New Voices Young Playwrights Contest and Festi-

val featuring full productions of short plays written by area students. Plus,

the Humana Festival of New American Plays, which originated in 1976 is an

internationally renowned festival that celebrates the contemporary Ameri-

can playwright. There is more to say about that in upcoming Gazettes,

since we will be there for CAVORT during this festival.

In fact there will be more to say about the entire conference, so stay tuned,

or for information now, go to www.CAVORTInc.com. The conference

promises us a chance to network with volunteers from theatres across the

United States and Canada. Plan to join us and let us know if you are. My

email address is: [email protected].

Craig Noel was funny, whimsical, dashing, sharp tongued, direct, incredibly kind, and totally loyal to the Old Globe Theatre, now known as The Old Globe. He adored macadamia nuts, popcorn, mar-tinis, Mexican culture, and the circus. Noel was a smooth dancer, causing every female guest to se-cretly, and not so secretly, hope he'd invite her to dance. He astonished actors with his habit of get-ting up on stage and acting out their roles for them, demonstrating, not simply telling, exactly what he wanted. This was verboten among most perform-ers and directors. But, Noel let his enthusiasm

guide him and the actors willingly followed. That's ironic because he gave up acting as a young man due to his extreme nervousness when in front of an audience. Noel began his theatrical life as an actor, but he made his mark as a direc-tor. In addition to directing more than 215 plays, he produced an additional 270 productions at the Old Globe Theatre. He made his debut as an actor at the Globe Theatre in 1937. The San Diego Community Theatre was char-tered to operate the Globe Theatre which had been constructed for the 1935 Exposition. Though the group was forced to move to Dartlee Hall on Sixth Avenue during the Second World War, where theatre activity contin-ued in a somewhat makeshift manner, it returned to the Globe building in 1947. Once the Navy returned the Globe to the Community Theatre, the Board of Directors immediately set about persuading Noel, who was then a dialogue director at 20th Century Fox, to come back to San Diego and be-come its permanent Artistic Director. Delza Martin pleaded with Noel to return, breaking down in tears. He returned and never again left the Globe. Noel had directed the screen tests of actresses Shelley Winters and Mari-lyn Monroe at 20th Century Fox and had a bright future in Hollywood. But, San Diego's Globe Theatre became the focus of his entire life. He continued directing until he was nearly ninety. A recipient of two Honorary Doctorate degrees, Craig Noel was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2007 at the White House by George W. Bush. Frail and ill, he still retained his impish spirit and insatiable curiosity about everything. He referred to Balboa Park as "my playground" and The Old Globe as his permanent home.
