From the Parish Priest “Any Dream”

The Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical includes the song “Any

Dream will Do” and there are many references in the musical to Joseph’s

dreams. The musical is based on and built around the biblical stories of

Joseph in the book of Genesis. In July the musical will be performed by

children at the Endowed School in King’s Cliffe.

When it comes to the dreams of Joseph, a question we are left with is, what

can we do with a dream? Dreams in the bible are usually very significant. In

the story of Joseph we read how he annoys his brothers with the details of a

dream in which symbolically, as both bundles of wheat and as the stars in the

sky, they are described as bowing down to him. Later, when in prison, he

interprets the dreams of a baker and wine carrier; to one is given a message

of release and to the other of being killed.

As he matures the interpreting of dreams by Joseph becomes a sign of his

wisdom and, in correctly interpreting Pharaoh’s dream about seven fat and

skinny cows as meaning times of plenty and then times of famine, he rises to

a position of power. He is the adviser who prepares the country fully for the

famine. Tim Rice’s lyric “The first recorded rationing in history was a hit”.

Towards the end of the biblical story, Joseph and his brothers are reunited

and the description in the Genesis narrative of their reconciliation is striking

and moving. He and they have learned a great deal about life, about coming

through difficult times, and about accepting one another in a loving way

without resentment. Taking a dream seriously can and does make a

difference. It was something the civil rights leader Martin Luther King

understood and is remembered when in 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial in

Washington, he delivered that famous speech. Philip Davies

Christian Aid Week 2018 Thank you to everyone who responded to the street collection last month for

Christian Aid Week. We raised £1,376.67 through envelope donations of which

£722.93 was Gift Aided. This will allow a further £180.73 to be reclaimed bringing

the overall total from street collections to £1,557.40.

On Sunday 6th May a Bring and Share Lunch was held at King’s Cliffe church

where £229.50 was raised to help the people of Haiti build hurricane resistant

homes. A big thank you to all of the collectors and to everyone who helped and

supported Christian Aid Week 2018. Jo Jones

Coffee Morning Last month’s Coffee Morning was held at the home of Judy Floyd where we were

able to sit in her very pretty and colourful garden. Coffee and homemade cakes

were enjoyed and £113 was raised for Church Funds. Thank you to everyone who

came and supported the event and a special thank you to Judy for making us feel

so welcome.

This month’s Coffee Morning will be held on 11th July at 14 Park Street. As we do

not meet in August it would be lovely to see you all there. Janet Howard

King’s Cliffe Women’s Fellowship At our meeting last month, we learned about Christian Aid projects in Haiti

following the devastation by the earthquake in 2010 and Hurricane Matthew in

2016. We also marked with sadness the passing of Angela Hetherington and

reflected upon her contribution, not only to our group and to the Women’s World

Day of Prayer Services, but also to the Church Coffee Mornings and other events.

Our annual outing to Gates’ Garden Centre, Oakham will take place on 5th July, in

place of our usual meeting. We shall be leaving from outside the church at

1.15pm prompt. As we have no meeting in August our next meeting will be held

on Thursday 6th September at 2.00pm in the CHAOS room, King’s Cliffe Church,

when members will be invited to ‘Show and Tell’ to the group. Christine Ball

Leprosy Mission We collect used stamps for the Leprosy Mission at Orton Goldhay, Peterborough.

Many thanks to Chris Thistlethwaite who has saved stamps for many years and

given them to this cause - over 3,000! Henry will deliver them safely.

Please continue to put your stamps in the box at the back of the Church. They are

Village Hall Teas go weekly from Sunday 15th July On Sunday 15th July, as part of the Celebrating King’s Cliffe Community

programme, the Village Hall Teas Team will be very pleased to welcome you as

usual in the hall upstairs from 2.00pm until ‘last orders’ at 4.30pm. It will be the

start of our weekly season of teas for the summer through to Sunday 16th

September. For the summer, cream and jam with homemade scones join our

selection of homemade cakes and cheese scones, not forgetting the favourite of

toasted tea-bread! Village Hall Teas are a real community event! They are a

chance to meet friends old and new for a chat over tea and cake, with homemade

preserves on sale and our Book Corner to browse for a good read.

Originally established as King’s Cliffe Memorial Hall at the end of the First World

War in November 1918, this year the Village Hall celebrates its 100th anniversary

as a community facility for the village. On 15th July, whilst Teas are being served

upstairs, we’ll have an ‘Open Doors’ afternoon from 2.00–4.30pm downstairs in

the Underground space with pictures on show which help tell the ongoing story of

the Village Hall. Do come and have a look around. You’ll be most welcome.

King’s Cliffe Heritage Events in July: Come and see our ‘Who was here in 1911?’ stand at the Duck Race

(1st July), or book onto our Living History Walks on 14th July, at 3.00pm and

7.00pm. (Email admin@kingscliffeheritage.org or phone 470350).

The Heritage Centre at 27 Bridge Street will be open on Sunday 22nd July

between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. Come and see our ever-growing collection of

village artefacts on display from the village schools, businesses, the timber trade

and the railway, as well as our unique collection of Cliffe turned woodware made

over a hundred years ago. Find out more about ‘Who was here in 1911?’ by

searching our digital archive of pictures and other material – maybe you’ll find a

picture of your house and who lived there then! Our regular opening times

through until October are on the 4th Sunday of each month and August Bank

Holiday Monday and entry is free. Look for our hanging sign on Bridge Street that

tells you we are open. Disabled access is via a ramp at the rear.

King’s Cliffe Heritage Meeting will take place on Wednesday 18th July at KC

Active starting at 7.30pm. Our topic for the evening is “Brewing in King’s Cliffe,

past and present” Meet in the KC Active club-house to hear about brewing in the

past and see a rare display of historic brewing-related artefacts from King’s Cliffe

and the surrounding area; then move on to visit the nearby King’s Cliffe Brewery

at Unit 10, Kingsmead to see brewing in action today. Admission: £1 (members),

King’s Cliffe Gardeners’ Association We have arranged a morning visit to Ferrar House on Wednesday 18th July

starting at 11.00am which includes a light lunch of soup & rolls, fruit and tea or

coffee at a charge of £7.50. Ferrar House is a small Retreat Centre set in the

beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside, located in the village of Little Gidding. On

arrival we will have an introductory talk on the history of the house followed by

lunch and then you may wander around the gardens at your leisure. Transport is

by your own car: please let June know if you would like a lift or you are happy to

take passengers. Open to members and non-members. If you haven’t put your

King’s Cliffe Produce Show will be held on Sunday 12th August. It’s a fun event for

all the family with classes for children and adults. Schedules and Entry Forms will

shortly be available from local outlets. This year the Produce Show is in

conjunction with the King’s Cliffe Community Celebration taking place from 13th

June to 12th August. As part of that we are featuring a new category in the

Photography Section: Up to Half an Hour from King’s Cliffe. This can be by any

method: Walk, Run, Bike, Horse, Mobility Scooter, Car or any other way you can

think of. Make sure you have a camera on you, whenever you go out for fun -

there are so many fabulous places to visit 30 minutes away. There are some

really good prizes to be won, so watch out for publicity on this!

Gardening tips for July: trim your herbs: the more you use them, the more they

will bush out. The scented foliage makes a pretty addition to bunched cut flowers

as well. Raspberries, cucumbers, courgettes need extra water to swell the fruit;

lettuce, spinach too to stop them bolting. Succulents are good alongside bedding

plants as they retain their moisture well. Stop your tomatoes after 4 or 5 trusses

to make sure all fruits develop and ripen optimally. Lettuce can be hard to

germinate when it’s hot and dry: sow in the evening (germination apparently

takes place a few hours after sowing) and you should get some good seedlings.

Plant saffron crocus now in a sunny well drained spot for autumn flowers.

King’s Cliffe Parish Council Celebrating King’s Cliffe: You may have seen the logo

and wondered what it’s all about. Celebrating King’s

Cliffe is a series of events to promote and enjoy the

many diverse and interesting activities and clubs in

our village, to socialise, to get involved. It is supported

by the Parish Council via funding from the National Lottery, and kicked off with

King’s Cliffe Players production of Lark Rise, closing on 15th August with the

Annual Craft and Produce Show. In between we have Underground’s Duck Race,

a Litter Pick, a Concert in the church, a ‘taster’ Sports and Activities day at King’s

Cliffe Active, a Wildlife Walk, a fascinating, ongoing project from King’s Cliffe

Heritage called ‘Who Was Here in 1911?’, a special, commemorative Village Hall

Teas, a Barbecue-on-the-Green at Oak Lane, the school Summer Fayre, and more.

Keep your eyes and ears open for the logo and further details.

Grass Cutting: Northants County Council is responsible for cutting the majority of

the village grassed areas, but budget restrictions mean that they will only do so a

maximum of three times this year. The Parish Council will be responsible for

keeping matters under control in the meantime, and have employed KCA to carry

out the work. We are as keen as you to see the village looking good, but it is a

challenge because this is a new venture. Please bear with us, continue to pass on

any concerns to the Clerk, and if anybody feels they would like to help in keeping

their local areas neater, as some thoughtful residents already do (thank you) your

contribution will be very much welcomed and appreciated.

Maltings Green: The grass at Maltings Green has been allowed to grow quite

long some of the time this year (see above), and it seems to have resulted in

increased dog-fouling. We are very fortunate to have this beautiful area, which is

well-used by individuals and groups alike. Underground regularly hold outside

activities on the green in the summer; it’s terrific that they can get outside and

enjoy the fabulous surroundings with different activities. The Produce Show is

held there, another village event enjoyed by many. It’s also a lovely place to sit

and relax at almost any time. Dog mess can be a huge spoiler. Clearing up after

your dog would make an enormous difference, so that unsuspecting individuals

(especially children) are not treading in dog mess (yuk!). There are two suitable

bins nearby – the designated dog bin at the bottom of Maltings Lane and the litter

bin on the edge of the green. Thank you to those who already use them.

Housing Needs Survey: In the coming weeks every household in King’s Cliffe will

receive by post a Housing Needs Survey. Midlands Rural Housing are conducting

the survey independently on behalf of the East Northamptonshire Council with

the full support of the Parish Council.

The survey is totally confidential: any information or comments made may be

included in the analysis but your identity will not be revealed and readers of any

report will not be able to identify you.

The purpose of the survey is to assess levels of local housing needs, this is not just

about how many houses but the type of housing, truly reflecting people’s

requirements, i.e. affordable housing for people on lower incomes or wishing to

move out of their parent’s homes, housing for people wishing to down-size,

suitable housing for families, adapted housing for people with disabilities, housing

for older people with care needs to rent or to purchase.

The evidence gathered in this survey will be used to inform the Council’s Housing

Strategy and Planning Policy and ensure resources are being effectively targeted.

The survey will provide a credible evidence base which will identify the need for

rural housing across type, tenure and size. Our community of King’s Cliffe and its

rural surroundings is an important asset for us all and there is a general desire to

maintain it as a beautiful, rural village, whilst allowing for proportionate and

appropriate growth, enabling residents, if they so wish, to remain and maybe

return, to be part of its unique community from cradle to grave. This is your

opportunity to say what type of housing is required rather than developers

proposing what they wish to deliver. We would urge you to complete the survey

and return it in the pre-paid envelopes within the specified timescales.

Call Connect: As you may be aware, the Call Connect Service has been provided

by the County Council, which currently has financial problems. The District

Council says that it cannot fund the whole of the Call Connect service and it has

been proposed that Parish Councils should take over the funding of this service,

as we have no limit on the increase that we can put on our annual precept, which

determines the amount that all households in King’s Cliffe pay. Whilst we believe

it is a valuable service, we believe that the District Council, which is in a healthy

financial position, could indeed fund this without the need to resort to asking

Parish Councils to do so. We also do not want to become responsible for a Bus

Service, which we would be if we collected your money and paid for the service.

The cost to the Parish Council would be around £5,000 per annum and woud add

£10 to the amount each household pays in tax to the Parish Council.

Finally, with the County in difficulty, we are also concerned that, if we accepted

the transfer of the funding of this service and the responsibility that goes with it,

we could then see the County looking to pass more services on to the parish and

to be funded by the parish. I am sure there will be many different views on this

but we will keep you advised of developments.

Transition King’s Cliffe

Transition King’s Cliffe for environment and community Community Orchard: Everyone is welcome to join us on the

first Saturday of each month 1.00pm till 3.00pm to help with

light weeding and mulching around the fruit trees. We always

have a kettle on the boil. Our wild flower swathes are coming

on nicely and will be mown off with scythes in July. We are

“one mower short of a full rota” Could you spare one hour per

month to help us mow the orchard? Our mower is pleasant to use and it’s quite a

satisfying job. Contact Kirk 07506 782 024.

Wildplaces: In June we did some maintenance on the path in the railway cutting

laying a boardwalk and excavating the drainage near to KCA. This will hopefully

make it all a bit drier next winter! Work also continues on the pond area at

Maltings Green to control the nettles and butterbur.

On July 8th ,as part of the village ‘Celebrating Community’

programme, we are running our popular summer Wildlife

Walk. Meeting at KCA at 10.30am, we will go round most

of our managed areas looking for wild flowers, butterflies

and other insects. Children and well behaved dogs

welcome, and there will be spotter sheets available for

those who want to tick them all off! Please let us know if

you are coming as numbers may be limited, and do wear

sensible footwear.

Minibus: As summer has finally arrived, bookings for the minibus are picking up

apace. If you’re organising a wedding, a trip to a concert or show, or just a day

out with friends, get your diary out and send an email to mikehenchy19@gmail.com

Volunteers Wanted @ FoodCycle FoodCycle is an organization that uses surplus food from supermarkets to provide

a hot meal for people who may be homeless, elderly, in need of a cooked meal or

lonely and seeking company. Each week volunteer drivers collect donations from

seven supermarkets around Peterborough and from Riverford Organics at

Sacrewell Farm and deliver them to Park Road Baptist Church. Here the food is

sorted and weighed and a menu is devised based on what has been donated. At

12.30pm the doors are opened and around 60 guests are served a nutritious three

course meal and volunteers join them over lunch to chat. At the end of the meal

guests are given bags of groceries to take away as well as boxes of hot food.

If you could spare a few hours a week FoodCycle could use your help with

St Nicholas Church, Bulwick Annual Horticultural Show 25th & 26th August: Just to remind you that the

schedules have been distributed to all eligible villages; if you have misplaced your

copy then please get in touch. There will be two registration sessions on Monday

20th August in St Nicholas Church: 10:30am to 12 noon and 6.00pm to 8.00pm. If

you intend to enter the Photography classes the photographic exhibits must

accompany your entry form as the team need to code and classify the exhibits

ready for judging. If you are away for the registration sessions but still wish to

exhibit then you can leave your entry form and any photographic exhibits with me

or other committee members (see schedule for details) and we can then ensure

your entry has been registered. Regrettably we cannot accept late entries. There

will be teas and stalls in the Village Centre on both afternoons and David Haines is

opening his lovely cottage garden which is well worth a visit. Raffle prizes and

tombola prizes will be gratefully received. All proceeds are for church funds.

St Nicholas Church and Churchyard: Help is needed all year round to ensure the

church and churchyard is well maintained. The church, which is Grade 1 listed,

needs regular cleaning, polishing and general tidying. Practical help would be

appreciated to maintain the church and churchyard; if you were able to give some

of your time to assist it would make a huge difference.

Dress A Girl Around the World Workshops: The monthly sessions will resume on

Monday 17th September with the annual update ‘Tea & Cake’ session starting at

2.30pm. Anyone who wishes to find out what this group of dedicated and

talented ladies do please join us for tea and cake and a chat. Up to May 2018 the

group has produced 877 dresses, 451 beanie hats/vests, 185 blankets, 153

cardigans and jumpers, 134 boys shorts/tops, 65 teddies, 48 mittens, 37 girls

shorts/tops, 7 quilts,71 bags and many other items all despatched to orphanages

in Uganda, Tanzania, Syria, and many others. Thank you to all those who help in

Laxton Village Hall Summer is now in full flow and I hope everyone is getting some time to enjoy our

beautiful countryside, sit in the sun and store up some warm memories for the

months to come. It’s certainly been busy here in Laxton but, as we breeze into

July, things are slowing down a little, and I am looking forward to pottering round

my garden, enjoying it’s beauty and finally getting some time to sit down to read

my book with a glass of wine in hand!

Village Hall News: We are exceptionally lucky in Laxton to have such a lovely

Village Hall and it is now over 5 years since we opened the building. July is a quiet

month for us this year but we have just spent £800 on certificated 5 year

electrical, fire alarm and emergency lighting checks and have had to have some

essential repairs carried out to bring the building up to standard as well. Running

a Village Hall is expensive and we are only able to keep our hire rates low because

your committee works very hard to manage the facilities and fund raise. We are

always grateful for your support and help where you can.

Coffee Morning: We will be holding our Coffee Morning on Saturday 14th July and

the village committee will be hosting. As always, if you would like to bake a cake

or bring along some produce they will be gratefully received. We will be holding a

Coffee Morning in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support on Saturday 29th September;

please look out for how to get involved and support us. We now have volunteers

for all our regular Coffee Mornings for the remainder of the year.

Book Club: The book for July is Offshore by Penelope Fitzgerald. It won the

Booker Prize in 1979 and recalls her time spent on boats on the Thames in

Battersea. The novel explores the life of people who do not belong on land or on

sea, but are somewhere in between. To join the Book Club, or for more

Communicare A General Patients’ Meeting was held last month when we welcomed guest

speakers Joe Bailey (Healthy & Active Lifestyles Officer, East Northants Council)

Simon Fairhall (King’s Cliffe Active Site) and Robert Phipps (Volunteer Walk

Leader) The theme of their presentation was healthy activity promoted by ENC,

one of these activities being ‘Walking for Health’, recently-introduced voluntary

led walks from various locations throughout the area. Each Tuesday evening and

Friday morning a walk now takes place from the ‘Black Horse’ in Nassington for

approximately an hour. Numbers attending are gradually increasing as notices

are published and by word of mouth from those who are enjoying the benefits

and social side of this weekly activity. Simon Fairhall also gave details of further

expansion planned at the KC Active Site with the addition of a gym, café and

meeting/consulting rooms. Gaining financial support is in hand and he hoped

work will commence in the next couple of years. Continued overleaf ..

Simon stressed the importance of making people aware of the facilities available;

the site was never intended to be solely for King’s Cliffe residents, but to include a

much wider catchment area. There were various questions from the floor and

suggestions of several groups around the locality which might benefit from a

similar presentation.

Dr Takhar informed the meeting that unfortunately, due to the financial problems

with Northamptonshire County Council, the proposed project at King’s Cliffe had

not made any significant progress over the last few weeks and this situation was

unlikely to change until the future of NCC had been resolved. However, he was

pleased to report that the practice was in close negotiation with both the CEO of

Peterborough Hospital and other high level NHS representatives with regard to

the site at Wansford surgery. Plans were well advanced for a 60 bed unit with a

staff of 40 providing post hospitalization after care. This would be short stay and

costs would be covered by the NHS.

On the recommendation of the officials, it was agreed to provide funds for a new

portable ECG machine. As this will be sited and used at the King’s Cliffe surgery

this will be part funded by a donation from the late Terry Smith who wished the

money to be used for the benefit of King’s Cliffe patients.

The next meeting will be the AGM on 12th September. The officials are

concerned about the continuing lack of interest shown by patients to put

themselves forward to take an active role in the running of the PPG . They would

like to make people aware that serving on the committee need only entail

attending a quarterly meeting, although involvement with additional activities

such as fund raising, organising special events would naturally be very welcomed.

In the light of recent closures of several other PPGs in the Peterborough area,

they hope to generate more interest to avoid the same fate for our own group.

The social group were away in Scarborough in May with unfortunately very

inclement weather. It is hoped that the next holiday to Devon in September will

coincide with an ‘Indian Summer’. There is also another day trip planned for next

Nature Notes for June and July Spring is the season for white flowers. The hedgerows have been awash with

hawthorn blossom and the verges covered in Ox eye Daisies with wild garlic

clothing the woodland floor. Have you noticed that as the light fades at the end

of the day their whiteness stand out so much more, bringing out their beauty?

Early one evening a Hobby flew above the house. This is an elegant falcon with

long pointed wings and a regular summer visitor to the area in small numbers. On

a visit to Lakenheath Fen recently between 50 and 60 of them hunted above the

trees and over the reedbed. They feed mainly on dragonflies which they catch

and devour, usually on the wing. As they do so they bend their head towards their

claws so that flight momentarily appears to stop. One bird favoured a tall dead

tree to launch his hunting sorties from and then returned to devour his catch.

This is the ideal place for them to regain weight after their migration before

dispersing around the region to their respective nest sites.

Holly Blue butterflies have been particularly numerous this year with several of

them in the garden at one time. As the name suggests they feed on holly trees.

They are the first of the blue butterflies to appear each year. This may be a

bumper year for Holly Blues, which experience peaks and troughs in their

population cyclically. These fluctuations are caused by a parasitic wasp which lays

an egg in the caterpillar. As the number of wasps increases there is a resultant

decline in butterfly numbers which in turn reduces the food supply for the wasps.

Then Holly Blues begin to increase again and the cycle repeats. So, enjoy them
