The shootings in Chardon Schools hit so very close to home. Senseless loss of life is incomprehensible. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families, students and staff of the entire Chardon community.

Violence in any school causes us to think of our own situations. A school shooting could happen in our own schools. How would we respond? How will we protect our students, our colleagues, and ourselves?

Fortunately, today schools are required to have lockdown procedures. On a day when we are not actually confronted with violence, we practice with our students and colleagues to consider our options should we face violence in our own schools.

These procedures and practice drills are the result of advocacy by Our Education Association. After the Columbine shootings, OEA led the way by advocating for legislation and policies to keep students and school personnel safe. Once lockdown drills were required in schools, OEA’s Labor Relation Consultants (LRCs) provided support to the implementation of those policies.

How well these procedures are executed depends on each of us being properly prepared.

School violence is just one of many challenges we face as education professionals. Teacher evaluation procedures are changing. Legislators and ballot initiatives (Right-to-Work-for-Less and Voter Suppression) continue to impact our working conditions. Proper preparation is needed for every

challenge we face. It’s not enough for OEA to take action. WOEA, each local, and each member must be ready for whatever comes our way.

In addition to advocating for us in Columbus, OEA provides training for many of the situations we will face in our careers at its Summer Leadership Academy held August 6 - 8. OEA and WOEA provides scholarships for us to attend. To apply for a scholarship, visit the WOEA website, www.woea.org. Registration for the OEA Summer Leadership Academy opens May 1 on the OEA website, www.ohea.org.

It’s time to prepare for the next challenge. Yours in Education, Valerie Roldan WOEA President
