The Marine Data Concentrator TheMDCreceivesdigitalandanalogdatafromthesensors in theboat and converts them todigital mes-sages for theanalogdisplay instruments.Thismoduleislimitedtothedigitalinstrumentsanddoesnotsupportadditionalaccessories. The Marine Data Concentrator (MDC) is usuallymountedon the interiorsurfaceof thepodasclose tothe rear of the instrument panel as possible. Use 4-6fastenerstoattachtheMDCthroughthemountingholes.Selectthebestfastenerforthemountingenvironment.Self-tappingscrewsorsmallboltsmaybebest.

These are pressure hose con-nectors for one or two pitot lines marked “primary” and “sec-ondary.”

This is the input socket for the Packard 18-pin input connector.

This is the output socket for the Packard 5- pin output connector port. Display data exits here and passes through the Univer-sal Bridge Harness to the instruments.

Steppermotorsreplacetheaircoreforpointermove-ment.Thesteppermotorhas30timesmoretorquethantheaircore.Withthattorqueyoucanachieveaccuracyof1/3ofadegree.

To ensure the instruments have good power and ground, the MDC provides a regulated 7 vdc and ground. Itisveryimportantthatnothingelseisattachedtothe7voltsorthegroundfromtheMDC.

TheMDCwillreceiveallitsinformationfromthe18-pinconnector.Itisveryimportantthatthisconnectionisgoodforthesystemtoworkproperly. Take all measurements after the connector is re-moved.

Probing Pins in MDC and Instrument Connectors Itisveryeasytocausefailurestoanysystembynotusingpropermethodswhenprobingconnectors. Wheneverpossible,avoidstickingprobes,clips,andanythinglargerthantheterminalintoaconnectorsmat-ingside.Thiswilldamagetheterminalbyeitherstretch-ingitorforcingitoutoftheconnector. Back probing with a “T” pin will help eliminate anydamagetotheconnector.

As in all MDC and MMDC systems, swapping con-nectors with a working gauge is an easy process to eliminate failed wiring.

It is very easy to damage the terminals if testing is done on the front side of the connector. Damaging the terminal in this fash-ion will cause intermittent or failure of the MDC or instruments.

Using “T” pins in the back of the connector will help prevent any damage to the connector or terminals.

The Multi-Marine Data Concentrator TheMMDCgetsall its inputs fromtheenginesen-sors,paddlewheel,ignitionswitchandbattery.Alltheseinputs go into the 24 pin (INPUT) connector from theengine harness.Always make sure the MMDC has agoodgroundand12voltsbeforetroubleshooting.

The MMDC TheMMDCisacomputersystemthattakesthestan-dardsenderinputsandconvertsthemtoadigitalsignalusedbytheinstruments. It is very important that the computer has a goodgroundand12voltstorunproperly. MasterCraft LCD System TheMasterCraftLCDsystemhasaclock,hourme-ter,digitaltachometerandlaketemperaturestandard.Italsohasaplug-and-playsoftware,makingiteasytoaddoptions such as depth finder, air temperature or GPS, usingthesamedisplay. Also, theLCDdisplayhasseveralalarms.Thefol-lowingmessageswillbedisplayedifanalarmoccurs. VOLT=voltsbelow11.5. OIL=oilbelow4psiwhenrpmisbelow1000rpmoroilpressureisbelow10psiandabove1000rpm. TEMP = high temperature alarm from the engineECM. TRAN=transmissionalarmfromtheengineECM. AlladjustmentsaredonewiththesameLCDbutton.Youcantogglethroughthedisplayandmakechangestotheclock,shallowalarm,selectMet/Eng,activatetheselftest,andevenautocalibrateusingaGPSwhenin-stalled.

ThehourmeterisdisplayingboathoursandisstoredintheMMDC.ReplacingtheMMDCwillerasethehours.TheMMDCwillonlycountwhentheRPMisabove300.FromthisscreenyoucanalsochangetheLCDtometric.ThisisdonebyholdingdowntheLCDbuttonforthreeseconds. When prompted, use the LCD button to se-lectEnglishormetric.Afterselection,waitthreesecondsandthedisplaywillreturntonormaloperation.

TheclockcanbeadjustedbyholdingdowntheLCDbuttonwhentheclockisdisplayed.Afterthreesecondsthe colon will stop flashing. After it stops flashing, adjust hoursbypressingdownandadjustminutesbypressingup.Whencomplete,wait threesecondsand theclockwillreturntonormaloperation.

LaketemperatureisalsostandardontheLCDsys-tem. Lake temperature comes from the paddle wheelundertheboat.Ifthesensorbecomesopenorshortedtothebatterythetemperaturewillread32oForitwillnotbedisplayed. If thesensor isshorted toground, itwillread150oF.

MasterCraft Depth Option Operation TheMasterCraftmoduleisanoptionthatwillworkasaplug-and-playfeaturewiththeMasterCraftLCDsystem.JustplugtheconnectorintotheMasterCraftdashharnessandconnectthepowerfortheLowrancedepthunit. Aftertheconnectionshavebeenmade,thedepthin-formationwillbegintodisplayonthespeedLCD. Thedepthmodulewillreadupto400feetandhasashallowalarm. Theshallowalarmisadjustedbydoingthefollowing:1.DepthdisplayedontheLCD.2.HoldtheLCDbuttondownforthreesecondsoruntil

current set point is flashing.3. Adjust set point by pressing the LCD button up or

down.4.Whenadjustingiscomplete,donothingforthreesec-

ondsandthedisplaywillreturntonormaloperation.

Undernormalconditions,thedepthwillindicateupto400feet.Tochangethealarmsetpoint,presstheLCDModelbuttonwhenindepthmodeforthreesecondsoruntil the depth flash. At this point the shallow alarm set point is flashing. Use the LCD mode switch to change the setting up and down. When finished, wait three sec-ondsandthedisplaywillgobacktonormaloperation.

If “BAD” is displayed, the depth module has lostpoweron theredandblackwire locatedon thedepthmodule.Ifpowerispresentthemodulehasgonebad.

When“NRES”isdisplayed,itmeansthedepthmod-uledidnottransmitanydepthinformationtotheMMDC.Thiswillonlyhappenwhenadepthmodulefailsduringoperation.

MasterCraft LCD System Troubleshooting

ThenewLCDsystemallstartsattheMMDC.Ifallthesegmentsappearatstart-uporduringselftest,theLCDisprobablygood. ControllingtheLCDisdonewiththeLCDmomen-taryswitchlocatedonthedash.MomentarypressingupordownwilltoggleyouthroughtheLCD.Ifthetoggleupdoesnotwork,lookforthefollowingproblem: The wire to pin 14 on the 24-pin connector is open (momentary ground on this pin makes the LCD toggle forward). For toggle down failure the following may be theproblem: The wire to pin 17 on the 24-pin connector is open (momentary ground on this pin makes the LCD toggle backwards).

Undernormalconditions,theDepthwillindicateupto 400 feet. The LCD will flash the last known depth if the transducer fails to get a solid reading. It will also flash if thetransducerfailsorisnothookedup.

If“BAD”isdisplayedwhenoneofthefollowingprob-lemshaveoccurred.1. TheblackorredwirepoweringtheLowranceunitis

notattached.2. Thedepthmodulehasfailed.

When“NRES”isdisplayed,itmeansthedepthmod-uledidnottransmitanydepthinformationtotheMMDC.Thiscouldhappenunderthefollowingconditions:1. Powerordatatodepthhascomeofforfailed.2. Unitfailedduringoperation.

Water Temperature and Lake Temperature Charts

MeasurethesendersdisconnectedfromtheMMDCforresistanceandattachedwithpoweronforvoltage. Resistance can be checked by disconnecting the24-pin connector and measuring between the senderwireandground. Voltagecanbemeasuredbybackprobingthesen-sorwires.

Thehourmeter is automatically incrementedwhentheRPMisabove300RPM.Ifitdoesnotincrementorfailstosavethehoursthefollowingmaybethereasons:1. Thebatterywirelocatedonpin12ofthe24-pincon-

nector was removed before ignition was removed(pin11onthe24-pin).

2. NotreceivingRPMsignalfromtheengineonpin6ofthe24-pinconnector.

3. Groundonpin24ofthe24pinhascomeoff.

Aftertheclockissetitwillkeepcorrecttimeunlessallpowerisremoved.Itwillnotsavethecorrecttimeforthefollowingreasons:1.Thebatterywirelocatedonpin12ofthe24-pincon-

nector was removed before ignition was removed(pin11onthe24-pin).

2. Groundonpin24ofthe24pinhascomeoff.

Laketemperaturecomesfromthepaddlewheelun-der theboat.At room70oF thesensorwill readabout10000ohms.1. Ifthesensorwire(pin3onthe24-pinconnector)be-

comesopenorshortedtothebattery,thetemperaturewillread32oForitwillnotbedisplayedontheLCD.

2. Ifthesensorisshortedtogrounditwillread150oF.

MasterCraft Depth Option Troubleshooting BoththeDepth/GPSplugandplayoptionsarecon-nected through the10-pinconnector.Theconnectionsareasfollow:1. 7voltpowerpinE.2. GroundpinF.3. DigitalhighC.4. DigitallowH.

Thereisa6-pinconnectorthatconnectsthe10-pinMMDCconnectortotheDepth/GPSmodule.1. 7voltpowerpinC.2. GroundpinD.3. DigitalhighB.4. DigitallowE. AnyoneofthosepinsarenotcorrectormissingtheDepth/GPSwillnotshowonLCD. The other half of the Depth module is the LSM-3made by Lowrance. The Lowrance unit has its ownpowerandgroundwires.Withoutthosepowerwiresat-tached,theLCDwilldisplay“BAD.”

MasterCraft Cruise LCD TheMasterCraftCruiseLCDwasdesigned to takeadvantageofthethrottle-by-wiresystemofferedbytheengineupgrade.Thisisabasiccruisethatwillallowtheuser to select three different modes of control: RPM,speedormanual. In all cases when the engine has control until theLOCK icon is on solid.TheLOCK will flash when the enginedoesnothavecontrol.

AnotherfeatureisPULLmode.ThePULLmodeletstheuserhavecontrolofthethrottleuntiltheboatisuptospeed.Youmustbebelow7mphand1000RPMtousethisfeature.Aftertheenginehasreachedthespeed,itwilldisplayDECtolettheuserknowitisadjustingtothesetpoint.

AlwaysensuretheMMDChasagoodgroundand12voltsbeforetroubleshooting. The10-pinconnectorisconsideredtheoutputcon-nectorbecauseitdeliversallthepowerandinformationfor the instruments to be operated. Never attach any-thingotherthaninstrumentstotheoutputharness.

The MasterCraft Cruise LCD comes standard withtheengineupgradethatincludesthrottle-by-wire.

ThecruiseLCDhasabuilt-inclockthatwillbedisplayedwiththecruiseisoffandthekeyison.AfterthecruisehasbeenturnedonyouhavethreepossibleMODEStoselectfrom:speed,RPMormanual.SpeedandRPMsetpointscanbeadjustedwithoutturningonthecruise.ThisisdonebyselectingRPMorSpeedonthemodeswitchandthenpressingtheadjustswitchupordown.

TheRPMmodeworksbygivingtheengineECMarequestfortheRPMsetpoint.Theenginewillattemptto hold the RPM set point as long as the throttle hasbeenopenedpastthesetpoint.IfthethrottleisbelowormovedbelowthesetpointthecruisewillnotLOCK.Pulling back on the throttle and turning off the cruisesystemaretheonlywaystodisengagethecruise.

TheSpeed modeworksbygivingtheengineECMarequestforaspeed.Aslongasthethrottlehasbeenopened enough the engine will attempt to hold thatspeed.Thereisalowerlimitof10mphandanupperof50mph.AftertheenginehastakenoverthecontrolofthethrottleaLOCKwillappearsolidonthedisplay.

The Manual mode works like a car cruise. If theswitchisinmanualmodeandthecruiseisturnedonthecurrentRPMiswhattheenginetriestohold.Aswithallthemodesyoucanincreaseordecreasethatsetpointbypressingtheincrease-decreasebutton.

Cruise Control Operation in OFF Mode

System Start-up.WhentheignitionisturnedonthecruisecontrolsystemstartsinOFFmode.Whilethesys-temisinOFFmode,theLCDwillshowthecurrenttime.

RPM Set Point Adjustment. Inorder toadjust theRPM Set Point in OFF mode, first move the RPM/SPEED modeselectionswitchtotheRPMposition.Then,usingthe +/- switch select the desired Set Point. The RPMiconwillilluminateandtheLCDwilldisplaythecurrentSetPoint.Shortpressesofthe+/-switchwillincreaseordecreasetheSetPointby20RPM.HoldingtheswitchincreasesordecreasestheSetPointby100RPM.TheRPMSetPointislimitedtoaminimumof1200RPMandamaximumof5000RPM.

Speed Set Point Adjustment. In order to adjustthe Speed Set Point in OFF mode, first move the RPM/SPEEDmodeselectionswitch to theSPEEDposition.Then,usingthe+/-switchselectthedesiredSetPoint.TheSPEEDiconwillilluminateandtheLCDwilldisplaythecurrentSetPoint.Shortpressesofthe+/-switchwillincreaseordecreasetheSetPointby0.2MPH.HoldingtheswitchincreasesordecreasestheSetPointby1.0MPH.TheSpeedSetPoint is limited toaminimumof10.0MPHandamaximumof50MPH.

ToturnONtheCruiseControlSysteminRPMControlmode,makesurethat theRPM/SPEEDmodeselectionswitch is intheRPMpositionandthatthecurrentenginespeedisat least400RPM less than theSetPoint.ThenpressandholdtheON/OFFswitchintheONpositionforap-proximatelyonesecond.TheLCDshouldnowdisplaythe current engine speed, the RPM icon should be il-luminatedand theLOCK iconshouldbeblinking.ThesystemisnowinRPMControlmode.

Turning ON Speed Cruise Control Mode.ToturnontheCruiseControlSysteminSpeedControlmode,makesurethattheRPM/SPEEDmodeselectionswitchisintheSPEEDpositionandthatcurrentvesselspeedisatleast3.0MPHlessthantheSetPoint.ThenpressandholdtheON/OFFswitchintheONpositionforap-

Turning ON Manual Cruise Control Mode.ToturnontheCruiseControlSysteminManualControlmode,makesurethattheRPM/SPEEDmodeselectionswitchisintheMANUAL(center)positionandthatcurrenten-ginespeedisatleast1200RPM.ThenpressandholdtheON/OFFswitchintheONpositionforapproximatelyone second.TheLCDshould nowdisplay the currentengine speed and the LOCK icon should be blinking.ThesystemisnowinManualControlmode.

Cruise Control Operation in RPM Control Mode

Using Pull Up Mode.PullUpmodeallowsthedriverto control the throttle until the boat gets up to speed.Whentheboatisuptospeed,thecruisecontrolsystemwilltakeoveranddeceleratetheboattotheSetPoint.TousePullUpmode,slow theboatdownso that theenginespeedislessthan1000RPMandtheboatspeedislessthan7.0MPH.TheLCDwillindicatethatPullUpmodeisactivebydisplayingPULL.

Aftertheboatisuptospeed,theenginewilldeceler-atedowntotheSetPoint.TheLCDdisplaywillindicatethisbydisplayingDEC. Aftertheboathasdecelerated,thesystemreturnstonormalRPMControlmodeoperation.

Using Normal RPM Control Mode. Normal RPMControlmodestartswith the cruise control systemonbutnotengaged.This is indicatedbyablinkingLOCKicon. Inorder toengagethecruisesystem,acceleratetheboatuntiltheLOCKiconstayson.NowtheenginewillholdtheenginespeedtotheRPMSetPoint.

Disengaging the Cruise Control System. Therearetwowaystodisengagethesystem:PullingbackthethrottleandmovingtheON/OFFswitchtoOFF.• Pulling back the throttle will disengage the system

hasbeensentwiththisServiceAdvisoryandiscalledvdigsetup.txt.ItwillopeninNotepadonPCsequippedwithWindows.Ifitappearsinyoure-mailasaPlainTextAttachmentwiththeinformationalreadyshowinginthemessage,youcanblockandcopydirectlyfromthemessage.

2. The lines DEALER_LABEL_1 through DEALER_LABEL_8 aretheeditablelines(showninthevdig-setup.txt file with the factory information in italics) in whichthedealerinformationcanbesubstitutedinstead.Edit the data on these lines ONLY. Do NOT change any other information. Note that dealerships can input up to 21 characters per line on each of those lines 1-8 for display on the VDIG screen.

3. Save the vidgsetup.txt file to a USB flash/jump drive. Do NOT re-name the file. The file MUST be called vdigsetup.txt inorderfortheVDIGtorecognizeandaccept the information. Experience has shown thatVDIG likes a dedicated USB flash/jump drive. Dual engine vdigsetup.txt information on the same USBflash/jump drive will confuse the VDIG; it will search and try to download other files that may also be on the USB flash/jump drive.

4. Insert the flash/jump drive into the USB port in the armrestontheboat.

5. TurntheignitionkeyON.6. OntheVDIG,advancetotheSet-upscreen.7. Select“ResetVDIG.”8. On this screen, press Select again to re-set the

VDIG.9. WhiletheVDIGisre-setting,pressboththeUPand

DOWNbuttonssimultaneously.10.The VDIG should now display the “Boot loader”

screen.11.UsetheUPandDowntoselect“UploadVDIGSetup
