Project Summary

The Gatwick Diamond project is a new single emergency and dispatch and headquarters facility for the South East Coast ambulance service (SECAmb).

A design and build commercial project constructing new headquarters including emergency and dispatch facility for the South East Coast Ambulance Service, allowing the release of pockets of current accomadation occupied by SECAmb. In turn this will permit a fire station to be constructed to serve the Burgh Heath area with wider regeneration and reconfiguration opportunities. The project main works- includes the construction of a four-storey office development comprising of steel frame/curtain walling and rain screen cladding. This phase also includes and extensive element of external works and new car parking facilities.

Key Challenges

Willmott Dixon were required to provide early access for tenant fit out works, requiring a segregated site to ensure all health and safety policy was adhered to.

How these were delivered

Willmott Dixon in fact offered their site offices to the fit-out contractor and a good relationship was formed so that any issues could be quickly addressed.

Lessons Learnt:The Good

• Surrey County Council believe approach is a blue print for others to follow in using land assets toprovide long-term revenue streams that off-set cuts in funding sources.

• The project was completed on time and was defect free on handover, and achieved a customersatisfaction score of 96.25%.

• Willmott Dixon took on a technical apprentice who completed their first year of training whilst on theproject, and is now looking to join the Management Trainee Scheme

• The team formed a relationship with Brighton University based STEM Susex, a regional coordinatorof work experience, and the site hosted a work experience placement during their summer break, as well as holding various events for STEM.

• The Group Safety Inspection recieved the best combined score to date.

The Challenges• Very short preconstruction period to start on site date which required the procurement and early

engagement of our supply chain so that we could obtain robust design, procurement and costcertainty in order to meet the required programme.

• Willmott Dixon were unable to enage directly with the building end users during the early stagesof the project, and this created challenges during the construction phase when it becameapparent that their requirements did not align with our specifications. We were however able toprovide the information so that their design could be adapted to meet their requirements duringtheir own fit out.
