Sending Forth

Greeters for February 3: Beth Herndon, Debbie Bradley, and Pam Barrett

We thank the Praise Band for their ministry this morning.

From the Pastor: As we gather for Sunday worship this week, Pastor Bob has been on a mission trip with our Church VIM for nine days and “The Ship” hasn’t SUNK yet; and, as far as I can tell, we are still headed in the right direction! (These comments refer to my sermon at 8:45 & 11:00 last Sunday.) A word of thanks to Vickie Franks for preaching at the 9:00 service last week! This week we have called in the Big Guns! Our Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Bill Presnell will preach at the 9:00 and the 11:00 services today. Various lessons will be used in the three services and they all will point us to Jesus and challenge us as we continue on this journey we call life. As I reflect on the Lesson from Luke this week, I am amazed at the complexity of human nature as the folks of the city of Nazareth rejected Jesus when he claimed to be their long awaited messiah. At first, they praised him, just as people did from other parts of Galilee. They marveled that Joseph’s boy had become a prophet! But, then the tide turned. Were they disap-pointed that Jesus worked no great miracles before them that would bring fame to their city? At any rate, the people became enraged by his presence and threatened to do him harm! Jesus left his hometown, but not as a hero! As he continued to walk among us, Jesus proved to all who would listen and believe that he came to be our savior! Pastor Charles

+SHARING THE PEACE

OPENING VOLUNTARY “Someday” Alan Menken

Someday, when we are wiser, when the world’s older, when we have learned, I pray, someday we may yet live to live and let live. Someday, life will be fairer, need will be rarer, greed will not pay, Godspeed this bright millennium, on its way, let it come, someday.

Someday, our fight will be won then, we’ll stand in the sun then that bright afternoon. ‘Til then, on days when the sun is gone we’ll hang on, and God’s love will rule Change will come, one day, someday soon.

+HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 110 “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” UMH

+AFFIRMATION OF FAITH “The Apostles’ Creed” UMH 881

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our

Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. +GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

PRESENTING OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “The Gift of Love” Hal Hopson

(Please sign and pass the attendance pad.) Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all-inspire, And have not love, my words are vain, as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess, But not be given by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.
