World Communion Sunday
Beginning in the 1930s, the first Sunday of October has become a time when Christians in every culture
break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm Christ as the Head of the Church. On that day,
we remember that we are part of the whole body of believers. Whether shared in a grand cathedral,
outside on a hilltop, in a meetinghouse, or in a storefront, Christians celebrate the communion liturgy in
as many ways as there are congregations. World Communion Sunday can be both a profound worship
experience and a time for remembering the wider community of faith.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION .......... written by Jameel Maher Khadir, Near East School of Theology student,
................................................................................................. Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
Gracious Lord, creator of this universe, in your generosity you have given us a world of abundance and diversity, yet we live guided by greed and selfishness. We confess that we have defaced your creation and poisoned our environment through our consumerist behavior and for personal gain. In Christ, you made us brothers and sisters and intended for us to be united, yet we have built walls to separate us from those who are different from us. We ignore the poor and the weak and honor the rich and powerful. In all this we have not lived according to your will. In your mercy, forgive us our sins.
Moment of silence for silent confession
KYRIE ..................................................................................................................................................................... 551
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy upon us.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS........ written by Shant Agoushian, New East School of Theology student,
.............................................................................. Union of Aermenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East.
“God accepted us simply because of our faith in Christ,” through whom our sins were forgiven.
May God help us to continue to “preach peace to those who are near and far.” Amen.
**RESPONSE TO FORGIVENESS ............................................................................................................ 624 v. 5

Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure, that in thy strength we evermore endure.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Music Notes by Rebecca te Velde
Prelude: J. S. Bach’s (1685-1750) fughetta for manuals alone (no pedals) is based on the first phrase of a German hymn bearing this title. The musical subject (theme) features insistent repeated notes that “hammer home” this text and create a tangible sense of the immutable laws of God. But the cheerfulness of the quick dance rhythm and brightness of G major also express the joy of an abundant life lived in accordance with God’s will. Postlude: This is a brand new, energetic organ setting of the African-American spiritual “I’m Gonna Eat at the Welcome Table”, #770 in Glory to God. Matthew Corl is organist and associate director of music at First United Methodist Church in Lakeland, Florida. It is played today with the permission of the composer. Permission to reprint, podcast, and/or stream the music in this service obtained from ONE LICENSE with license #A-707358. All rights reserved.
