try Club in Wisconsin. Early in his career, he gained three years of experience at

public and semi-private facilities in Minnesota and Florida, toggling between

Minnesota in the summer months and Florida in the winter.

Scholarships during his completion of the PGA’s Golf Professional Training Program.

versity in Milwaukee. He and his wife, Veronica, have one son, Payne Alexandyr with another child due in

January 2013.

In addition to golf, Ben’s interests include bass fishing, economics, finance and attempting to procure the

perfect chicken wing sauce.

He is running for Secretary for two reasons. In his words, first; “I hope to build upon our current efforts of

enhancing the image of PGA Professionals within our Section.” Second, “I believe with my significant indus-

try experience, when combined with my strong formal educational background, I am in a position to assist our

Section with our endeavors. I look forward to the opportunity to speak about these ideas in greater detail at our

2012 Fall Meeting.”

GROWTH OF THE GAME

On behalf of the Gateway PGA Foundation and PGA REACH, I would like to thank every Pro-fessional who participated in the National Car Rental PGA REACH Charity Pro Am on Octo-ber 8th at Boone Valley. The inaugural fundraiser raised awareness and funds for PGA REACH and was a great success.

On October 10th, the Gateway Staff was invited to participate in the Nestlé Purina Health and Wellness Fair. In just two short hours, over 1,000 people attended the fair and were exposed to the Gateway PGA and its Professionals, programs, and community events. Opportunities like these are valuable in continuing to promote our brand and profession. Moreover, we welcome any suggestions for opportunities like this in the future.

As a follow-up to the Education survey that went out the end of October, I want to thank all of you who took the time to complete the questionnaire and submit your responses. This information is extremely helpful in planning this winter’s Educational opportunities. Golf 2.0 continues to be an important topic and valua-ble resource in helping Professionals grow their business. Much of these educational opportunities will focus on various strategies of Golf 2.0 and implementation assistance. Please stay tuned for the schedule to be released soon.

Fingers crossed for a cold off season! I look forward to seeing everyone at the Awards Dinner, Fall Meeting, and Fall Sale!

RULES CORNER

Ryder Cup “Time of Starting”

I had a few anxious moments on Sunday morning at the Ryder Cup. I was the referee for the Rory

McIlrory vs. Keegan Bradley match. As you all know Rory barely made his tee time.

Their tee time was 11:25. At 10:55 AM there was a report on the rules channel that McIlroy was not on the property. I was leaving the clubhouse head-ing across the practice putting area at that time. I made my way to the first tee where chief referee David Price was located. He asked if I was aware of the situation. We got another report at 11:08 from a Ryder Cup Europe official on the tee who said McIlroy was still on the interstate. Knowing the traffic situation, that elevated the concern. Fortunately, that report was not accurate. A few minutes later past PGA of

Jesse Barge, PGA Master Professional

America Rules of Golf Committee Chairman, Mark Wilson, called on the radio to let us know Rory had just pulled in to the parking lot at Medi-nah. Mark was doing analysis for NBC and they had a camera on the lot. Fortunately, McIlroy arrived on the tee at 11:19 AM with no time to warm up. He was remarkably composed considering the situation. Many friends and members have asked what the ruling would have been if he arrived at the tee late. Rule 6-3 covers Time of Starting. If he arrived at or anytime prior to 11:25:00 he would be on time. If he arrived between 11:25:01 and 11:35:00 I would have informed he was late to the tee and the penalty was loss of the first hole and the match would have proceeded to the second tee. If he ar-rived at 11:35:01 or later the penalty would have been disqualification and Keegan Bradley would have won the match. See Decision 6-3a/2.5 which explains the meaning of "Time of Starting.

TOURNAMENT UPDATES

T he leaves are falling and the tempera-tures are dropping which means the end

of another Gateway PGA tournament schedule and the beginning of the offseason for most us! The sea-son once again came to an end at the Cleveland Golf Lake Team Event. The field was a little smaller than year's past, but those who played had three great days of golf with pristine course conditions and un-believable weather!! After three full days of compe-tition, the teams of Rob Sedorcek and his younger brother Jeff tied with Bob Gaus and Steve Lotz. A special thanks to the Gateway Section staff, Kevin Hefner from Cleveland Golf, Tory Hayes and the staffs at Porto Cima, Old Kinderhook and Osage National for an outstanding event. As we all know by now, Bellerive Country Club will host the best players in the world over fifty years of age next May for the 2013 Senior PGA Champion-ship presented by KitchenAid! Two members of the Gateway Section, Bob Gaus and JC Anderson will represent us after qualifying last month in Virginia at the Senior PNC. Congratulations to both Bob and JC on their outstanding play, I look forward to seeing them compete with Couples, Vijay and Watson for the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy in their own backyard. Well done gentlemen!! The last two years as Gateway PGA Tournament Chairman has been a fun & rewarding experience. I always enjoy competing against and socializing with the members of our section. Even though my game has wavered the last few years, I look forward to each and every Monday and know a lot of time and energy goes into each event we put our logo

behind. I want to send out a big thank you to all of our host facil-ities for opening your doors to us this year. Also, thank you to our dedicated staff who put in tireless hours to making our program successful. Steve Finn, Josh Riley, Susan Bender, Bob Shogren & Gene Keiter all do their part to make our events professional every time we tee it up. On a personal note, I am extremely honored to have been chosen by my peers as the 2012 Gate-way PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year. It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by my colleagues and friends and I look forward to join-ing the rest of our award recipients at the annual awards dinner on November 4th. If you have any feedback on our 2012 tournament program, please don't hesitate to contact me or Ste-ve Finn. Please be on the lookout for the BlueGolf survey going out later this Fall. We value the answers and opinions in planning for future events. See you all at the Fall Meeting and have a great offseason! Brett Moomey, PGA Gateway PGA Tournament Chairman

When we talk about strategies for improving golf performance, the focus is often on exercise, nutri-tion and stress management. However, we can’t ignore the power of the mind. Working together, your mind and body are a powerful team for en-hancing your game. It’s a rather simple, but important strategy: After setting reasonable cardio, strength and flexibility goals, visualize what results when you achieve these goals – a stronger golf swing, for example. In her book titled, Winning by Losing, Jillian Michaels writes, “Having and keeping a vision of the future affects your behavior and actions now.” She also notes that, “It is not about wishing for something to happen, it is about using your mind’s eye to literally see the thing you wish to accom-plish.” Ali Vicent used this technique to accomplish her goals. Vicent was the first female contestant to win on The Biggest Loser television show. Along with visualizing her body losing weight, she visualized stepping on the scale the final night and having confetti falling on her head as she was deemed the winner. In his book, Golf My Way, Jack Nicklaus wrote: “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. It’s like a color movie. First I ‘see’ the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes and I ‘see’ the ball going there: its path, trajectory and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is sort of a fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the images into reality.”

In the book Psycho-Cybernetics, author Dr. Max-well Maltz wrote this interesting assessment: “Experimental and clinical psychologists have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the human nervous system cannot tell the difference between an ‘actual’ experience and an experience imagined vividly and in detail.” When you visualize proper training—and see yourself accomplishing goals—you have a greater opportunity to improve your golf performance. To be successful in this technique, make sure you stay positive and start with realistic goals. If you desire coaching to learn how to visualize and practice your goals, contact Barb Michael at 314-984-0592.

Lake Team Event Recap Perfect Weather Highlights 2012 Lake Team Event

Most players spend a lot of time packing for the annual trek to the Lake of the Ozarks for the Lake Team Event as it is any-one's guess what the weather may hold. This year was the ex-ception, with temperatures over 80 each day, most of the field was sent scrambling for sunscreen and shorts for the year end-ing team event.

Longtime PGA Partner, Cleveland Golf, was well represented by Kevin Hefner and John Mason, both pre-sent for the event. After 54 holes, 2 teams were at the top of the leaderboard, Jeff & Rob Sedorcek and Ste-ve Lotz & Bob Gaus, both finished the event at 18-under par. The Sedorcek brothers have played in the event for years and were extrememly happy with their 2012 performance. Next year should be even better and Rob will enter the Senior Division next year for the event and be able to move up a set of tees. Lotz & Gaus have won this event in the past, but stumbled a bit in the Scramble format, were still able to grab a piece of the overall title. Walt Siemsglusz & Dave Levine had a great week and finished alone in 3rd place, 1 shot back at 17-under. Three teams split 4th place at 16-under were Jeff Escott & Jeff Whitfield, defend-ing winners Rob Wilkin & John Richman, and former champs Brian Fogt & JC Anderson.

The Annual Lake Team Event presented by Cleveland Golf features PGA Professionals & Amateurs from the Gateway, Midwest, South-Central, & Iowa Sections of the PGA of America. The 2-person teams are

comprised of 2 Pros or 1 Pro and 1 Amateur, playing 3 different courses with 3 different formats. This years event lineup was comprised of 4-Ball at The Club at Porto Cima, Scramble at Old Kinderhook, and the final round was Chapman Alternate Shot at Osage National Golf Resort. All three facilities

Players Championship Recap Betz & Lotz Win Players Championship Titles

Adam Betz of Meadowbrook CC, capped a very successful 2012 with a victory at The Players Championship at Old Warson CC. Betz took the year ending victory over some of the areas

best players on a damp and cool day. The invitational event features the top 20 players in the Regular Division and top 5 from the Assis-tants Division. Adam had rounds of 71 and 69, 2-under par, to earn him a commanding 5-stroke victo-

ry. Finishing in the runner-up spot was first round leader, Kevin Triefen-bach, of Tapawingo GC. Rounding out the top 5, all tied for 3rd, was Scott Brauer, JC Anderson, & Bob Gaus.

The Senior Division ended up much closer as it took a playoff to determine the champion. Steve Lotz of Tower Tee and Brian Fogt of Bellerive were tied at 72 and headed out to the first hole for a sudden death playoff. Lotz prevailed, giving him his second victory of 2012. Steve's other victory also was determined in a playoff at Sunset CC in July. Walt Siemsglusz and Bob Gaus tied for 3rd while Jeff Whitfield and Scott Bess tied for 5th.

The 2013 PGA CareerLinks Profile Survey

The PGA of America developed the award-winning CareerLinks system to help golf industry employers and quali-fied PGA professionals connect for employment opportunities. The CareerLinks Profile is the method used to quantify the skillsets, background, experience, etc., of our PGA professionals and allows the system to search and identify matching candidates for jobs in the golf industry.

In 2009 when we made the decision to do the Compensation Survey on a yearly basis we stopped sending out The PGA CareerLinks Profile as a survey. It is a document that PGA professionals have always had the ability to up-date at any time so we didn’t feel the need to keep making them start from scratch. However in the past 4 years the industry has experienced change and the Survey has been enhanced with new questions based on the priorities of today’s golf industry and the needs of employers, including player development and higher level management positions.

PGA professionals were sent an email with a link provided to complete their new PGA CareerLinks Profile. This must be filled out to remain active in CareerLinks after the December 31st deadline. If you have questions please contact your PGA Employment Consultant or call 1-800-314-2713.
