    Fifth Grade Gateway Exhibition Requirements

    One of my goals for fifth grade students is that they know how to work in an

    organized, independent manner to create high quality, meaningful work.

    Your final exhibition will prove that you are able to do this.

    The following is a list of the 11 projects you must complete for your Third

    Trimester Gateway Exhibition and the newly instituted homework

    requirements.

    Requirement Description Timeline

    Interest Project Answer your driving question and

    then show us what youve learned. Becreative with your visual aid. This will

    have to be finished at home.

    Ongoing

    College Project Write letters to three colleges. Make a

    vocabulary book of college terms.

    Make a poster about one of thecolleges. Write a research report about

    the college. This will be worked on at

    school except for the poster, which

    will need to be finished at home.

    Now through early May

    Detroit Poetry Tour Project Present your Detroit Poetry Tour

    project, which will include poetry

    written about different places in

    Detroit as well as a collection of

    informational writing pieces aboutthese places.

    April-May

    This will be worked on

    mainly at school and will

    involve at least one field

    trip.

    Poetry Book Share the published poetry book thatyouve written during the course of

    this year.

    Ongoing

    Picture Book Students will write and illustrate apicture book that is patterned after one

    of the following real books: The ZWas Zapped, The Secret Knowledge

    of Grown Ups,Alphabet Riddles,

    Night Becomes Day, orIf Not for the

    Cat.Books will be made available atschool, but can also be checked out

    from the library.

    OR

    Students can write and illustrate a

    picture book that is a re-telling of a

    famous fairy tale or childrens story.

    May

    This will be introduced at

    school but will need to befinished at home.

    Author Study Choose a famous author from a list

    provided by your teacher. Complete

    and present an Author Study. This

    will involve reading at least three of

    this authors books and learning this

    persons biography and other facts

    about them.

    March

    This will be introduced andworked on SLIGHTLY at

    school. Much will be

    required at home.Students

    are responsible for finding

    their own books!

    Greek Mythology Project After reading several Greek Myths in

    class, complete two projects: an

    Ancient Greek newspaper involving

    at least five of these stories, and either

    a short video re-creation of one of

    the ancient stories OR a video guide to

    ten Greek Gods .

    AprilThis will be worked on

    mainly at school.

    Poetry Reading Present a reading (from memory) of a

    favorite poem that youve discovered

    this school year. Mr. Curran must

    approve your poem selections.

    May

    Geography Knowledge Know all 50 states. Be prepared tolocate and identify a random selection

    of 20 states when shown a map of the

    United States.

    OngoingStudents should begin on

    this ASAP

    Botany Project Present the results of a long-term

    experiment that you conduct at school

    involving two plants. Project report

    must contain photos, explanation,

    observations, a hypothesis, results,

    and conclusions.

    April-May

    This will be worked onmainly at school, but may

    need to be completed at

    home.

    Stock Market Project Students will learn about the stock

    market and create a fantasy stock

    portfolio. They will use percentagesand decimals as well as computation

    skills to track its progress. This will be

    worked on in school.

    Mid-March through May

    This will be worked on

    mainly at school, but may

    need to be completed at

    home.

    HOMEWORK REQUIREMENTS In order to pass this exhibition, you

    must have completed the following for

    the third trimester:

    At least 4 readingletters.

    80 percent of all StudyLinks turned in.

    80 percent of allProblems of the Weekturned in.
