Gatecrash+Join+in+the+games+at+a+teenage+house+party,+part+of+an+immersive+theatre+ experience+ that+ uses+ silent+ disco+ technology+ to+ put+young+audiences+at+the+heart+of+the+action.++Written+and+directed+by+Toby+Ealden++Gatecrash!started!life!with!the!simple!aim!of!trying!to!create!an!innovative,!relevant!and!accessible!theatre!production!for!a!broad!range!of!young!people.!

Together!with!our!commissioners!at!Lincolnshire.One.Venues!and!Frequency.Festival.2013.we!wanted!to!create!work!that!was!ambitious,!took!creative!risks!and!made!young!audiences!want!to!come!back!to!those!venues!and!experience!

more.!We!consulted!a!range!of!young!people!about!their!experiences!of!attending!

theatre!and!set!out!to!create!a!show!that!broke!the!theatrical!rules!about!how!we!

should!have!to!behave!in!a!theatre!space.!Thus!the!idea!to!recreate!a!teenage!

house!party!was!born.!!

But!what!about!the!actual!content?!Back!in!July!2013!we!locked!ourselves!in!a!

rehearsal!room!to!begin!creating!the!show.!We!talked,!wrote!lists,!drew!spider!

diagrams,!improvised!(a!lot),!recorded!interviews!at!2am!with!revelers!on!

Lincoln’s!streets!–!and!eventually!discovered!the!raw!basis!of!the!5!characters!

you’ve!just!followed.!At!Zest!young!people!are!placed!at!the!centre!of!everything!

we!create!and!Gatecrash!was!no!different.!Just!like!a!creative!relay!race!we!took!

those!characters!shared!them!with!the!young!people!who!participated!in!our!

2013!Summer!Challenge!programme.!In!total!81!young!people!took!part!across!4!

of!Lincolnshire’s!arts!venues.!These!Young!People!were!invited!to!gatecrash!our!

creative!process!by!writing,!producing!and!performing!short!performances!in!

response!to!our!characters!in!just!4!days.!We!asked!them!to!create!work!that!said!

something!about!their!experience!of!the!world!–!and!they!more!then!delivered,!

often!with!laugh!out!loud!humour.!Their!worked!dealt!with:!friendship,!loyalty,!

bullying,!change,!family,!school,!love,!betrayal,!forgiveness,!consequences,!sibling!

rivalry,!parental!neglect,!coping!with!trauma,!insecurity!and!trust.!Many!of!the!

themes!you!will!have!just!seen!played!out!at!Sam’s!party.!

It's!been!great!to!see!how!the!work!created!with!young!people!during!Summer!

Challenge!has!influenced!the!production.!The!grit!and!drama!of!excessive!alcohol!

is!all!in!there!but!parceled!up!in!a!comic!(and!at!times!farcical)!wrapping!that's!

representative!of!the!young!people!who!breathed!life!into!this!show.!Through!

unrequited!love,!youthful!insecurity,!vomit!in!handbags!and!dancing!on!tables;!

Gatecrash!examines!the!biggest!and!most!life!changing!of!experiences!–!being!a!teenager.!

Introduction!

Gatecrash!takes!place!within!an!enclosed!10m!x!10m!set!built!to!look!and!feel!like!an!open!plan!living!room!/!dining!room.!The!set!features!a!front!door,!living!room!area!with!sofa!and!TV!etc,!a!dining!area,!a!window!that!looks!out!to!the!garden,!various!pieces!of!furniture!and!a!number!of!exits!to!other!parts!of!the!house.!One!exit!leads!to!a!private!downstairs!toilet!set.!

All!audience!members!will!wear!wireless!headphones!throughout!the!performance.!Audience!members!can!choose!the!conversations!they!want!to!listen!to!by!pressing!a!button!on!their!headset.!The!action!of!the!production!is!therefore!split!into!different!2!channels.!This!will!mean!that!whilst!every!member!of!the!audience!is!attending!the!same!event,!they’ll!all!have!a!completely!different!experience!and!hear!different!things!E!just!like!a!real!party.!Non!alcoholic!drinks!will!be!served!throughout!the!performance!but!will!be!referred!to!as!if!they!are!alcoholic.!

The!audience!is!lead!into!the!performance!space!in!small!groups!of!around!10!who!are!first!given!a!short!induction!from!a!member!of!production!staff.!They!receive!a!quick!introduction!to!their!wireless!headsets!and!some!are!told!how!to!get!the!best!out!of!the!experience.!After!their!induction!they!will!be!invited!to!knock!on!the!front!door!and!then!put!on!their!headphones!as!they!cross!the!threshold.!

This!script!is!written!to!indicate!how!the!action!is!split!between!the!2!different!channels.!

Some!content!will!be!fed!simultaneously!to!both!channels!and!experienced!by!all!audience!members!regardless!of!the!channel!they’ve!selected.!

In!addition!to!the!dialogue!that!is!shared!through!the!2!channels!there!is!also!some!content!that!takes!place!that!is!not!heard!through!the!headsets.!These!smaller!scenes!take!place!in!private!corners!of!the!performance!space!to!small!groups!of!audience!members!who!will!lift!up!their!headsets!to!hear!the!actor!who!is!speaking!to!them.!
