Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Many, many thanks to so many individuals who made our annual parish picnic so successful and joy-ful. I am especially grateful to Brandon and Katrina Guida for hosting us at their beautiful and fun campground, Lindsey Foss for her 1,001 phone calls and emails arranging everything to be just right, Tri-na Beattie for the floral arrangements, the Knights of Columbus for doing the grilling and the many others who chipped in along the way. Merci mille fois! The bouncy house was always occupied, the food delicious, the day was beautiful...all in all, it was a great and joyful day. I might add that a very spirited pick-up football game arose in the midst of the picnic and a well-fought game was played until the last play when a certain someone made a game winning pass to a certain receiver who made a game-winning catch. They wish to remain anonymous on account of their great humility. However, it was something like a Brady-Edelman play you would see on a Sunday…!!!

In other news, October is the month of the Most Ho-ly Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Yes, I am sure you have heard from this pulpit on numerous occa-sions the importance of this short but powerful prayer. But it never hurts to be reminded by the saints and religious how wonderful is this prayer—see below for some great quotes.

Also, this week on October 13 we remember the “Miracle of the Sun” which occurred in Fatima in 1917. An estimated 70,000 people were in attend-ance for this last of the ’Fatima apparitions’ and were graced to see this stupendous miracle—more details on the following page.

Let us continue to try to pray the rosary daily espe-cially for peace in the world, in our homes and in our families.

May God bless you and Our Lady keep you,

Fr. Schultz

"The Rosary is a prayer that always accompanies me; it is also the prayer of the ordinary people and the saints... it is a prayer from my heart." -Pope Francis "Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother." -St. Padre Pio "There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot solve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary." -Sister Lucia, of the seers of Fatima “When you say your Rosary, the angels rejoice, the Blessed Trinity delights in it, my Son finds joy in it too, and I myself am happier than you can possibly guess. After the Holy Sacri-fice of the Mass, there is nothing in the Church that I love as much as the Rosary.” - Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche

Page 4: Gate of Heaven Parish · Meanwhile, José Almeida Garrett, a young lawyer, reported that “The sun’s disc did not remain immo-bile. This was not the sparkling of a heavenly body

The blue faded slowly and then the light seemed to pass through yellow glass. … People wept and prayed with uncovered heads in the presence of the miracle they had awaited. The seconds seemed like hours, so vivid were they. This wasn’t the only unexpected response from a secular source. The journalist Avelino de Almeida had previously published a satirical article about Fatima in the anti-religious newspaper O Seculo, which had succeeded in drawing great attention to the apparitions. But when he witnessed the miracle first hand he adopted a very different tone and truthfully reported what he saw, even though he was violently criticised for this by fellow journal-ists. Meanwhile, José Almeida Garrett, a young lawyer, reported that “The sun’s disc did not remain immo-bile. This was not the sparkling of a heavenly body for it spun round on itself in a mad whirl. Then, suddenly, one heard a clamour, a cry of anguish breaking from all the people. The sun, whirling wildly, seemed to loosen itself from the firmament and advance threateningly upon the earth as if to crush us with its huge and fiery weight.” Eyewitnesses to the miracle said that the sun danced in the sky, the colour of the whole land-scape changed successively, and the sun seemed to come down towards them, so that many of the crowd thought it was the end of the world. It was also seen at a distance by various people, undercut-ting the idea that it was simply a collective halluci-nation. Something else that suggests that the mira-cle was genuine is that the people at the Cova felt the heat of the sun as it approached them. Their clothes and the ground – which had been soaked by the torrential rain – were dry at the end of the mira-cle.

The 6th Apparition of Fatima (Oct. 13, 1917): …[A]s for the children, they made their way to the Co-va amid the adulation and skepticism which had fol-lowed them since May. When they arrived they found critics who questioned their veracity and the punctuali-ty of the Lady, who had promised to arrive at noon. It was well passed noon by the official time of the coun-try. However, when the sun arrived at its zenith the La-dy appeared as she had said she would. "What do you want of me?" I want a chapel built here in my honor. I want you to continue saying the Rosary every day. The war will end soon, and the soldiers will return to their homes. "Yes. Yes." "Will you tell me your name?" I am the Lady of the Rosary. "I have many petitions from many people. Will you grant them?" Some I shall grant, and others I must deny. People must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins. They must not offend our Lord any more, for He is already too much offended! "And is that all you have to ask?" There is nothing more. As the Lady of the Rosary rises toward the east she turns the palms of her hands toward the dark sky. While the rain had stopped, dark clouds continued to obscure the sun, which suddenly bursts through them and is seen to be a soft spinning disk of silver. "Look at the sun!" From this point two distinct apparitions were seen, that of the phenomenon of the sun seen by the 70,000 or so spectators and that beheld by the children alone. Lucia describes the latter in her memoirs. After our Lady had disappeared into the immense dis-tance of the firmament, we beheld St. Joseph with the Child Jesus and Our Lady robed in white with a blue mantle, beside the sun. St. Joseph and the Child Jesus seemed to bless the world, for they traced the Sign of the Cross with their hands. When, a little later, this ap-parition disappeared, I saw Our Lord and Our lady; it seemed to me to that it was Our Lady of Sorrows (Dolors). Our Lord appeared to bless the world in the same manner as St. Joseph had done. This apparition also vanished, and I saw Our Lady once more, this time resembling Our Lady of Carmel. From the Catholic Herald, Oct. 12, 2017 …[W]hat happened was so incredible that even non-believers couldn’t deny it, as this report, which ap-peared in the secular Lisbon paper O Dia, indicates: The silver sun … was seen to whirl and turn in the cir-cle of broken clouds. A cry went up from every mouth and the people fell on their knees on the muddy ground. … The light turned a beautiful blue as if it had come through the stained-glass windows of a cathedral and spread itself over the people who knelt with out-stretched hands.
