11:00 “Operational Flexibility to Manage Wind and Solar Integration”

Increasing levels of wind and solar will require operational flexibility in power systems, currently provided bycentral generation such as gas and hydro. In the future, these will continue to be important, as well as new resources such as storage and demand response

EPRI has recently developed new methods and metrics to assess operational flexibility needs and flexibilityadequacy for power systems. Here, these methods and metrics will be described and results will be presented from numerous case studies being carried out across the US.

The importance of the gas network to the electricity system and ongoing work looking at how this will continue to evolve will be presented, including the potential impacts on gas plants of the transition to a new generation fleet

It is important as the power system moves to a new future state that the various value streams brought by both central and distributed energy resources are recognized – energy, capacity and ancillary services. EPRI’s framework for assessing the various components of the Integrated Grid will be described.

Aidan Tuohy, Operations & Planning, EPRI
