On 11 December 2005, vapour from thousands of gallons of petrol ignited causing an explosion

at the Buncefield Oil Storage Depot measuring 2.4 on the Richter Scale.

Purely as a result of our

GIS capability, which

enabled us to model using

zones of damage from the

epicentre of the loss, we

were able to give a reliable

estimate of our loss at 12

noon that day – within

three hours of being asked

the question at 9am on

Monday morning.

Recent trends have seen insurers focus on rating natural peril risk to an individual address.

This is no longer enough as they seek to refine this further to maintain competitive advantage.

The customer is demanding a service that is personalised for their individual needs in every

interaction and will respond negatively to inconvenience.

We have a better

understanding of where

damage is likely before and

immediately after an event.

Once the storm passes,

people often need help.

Predictive mapping gives us

an understanding of where

we need to be as soon as

possible.

Dealing with claims is an inevitable cost of doing business for every insurer but there are many

options available for maximising productivity through a connected workforce.

On the afternoon of Christmas

Day 2011, just as many people

were sitting down for their

family dinner, a large hail

storm swept through

Melbourne’s northern suburbs

eventually resulting in over a

hundred thousand claims

valued at more than $728M.

Targeting the right prospects leads to a much higher return on marketing investment. Location

analytics combines your policy data with demographic information to reveal opportunity.

Storing locations as addresses in the rows and columns of a database limits the value to the

organisation. A location platform stores locations as points ready to be mapped and analysed.

Giving developers the tools for adding mapping and geospatial analysis to your business

applications can bring geographic thinking to every part of your business.

The full benefits of GIS

technology come from a

coordinated approach where

geography is put at the heart

of your business.
