Geography

Ingeneral,Garuthasacoolbuttropicalclimate,withanaveragetemperatureof24C(76F).Averageannualrainfallis2,590mm(102inches).Thisareaincludesvalleyterritorysurroundedbyvolcanoes(MountKaracak:1,838m,MountCikuray:2,821m,MountGuntur:2,249m,MountPapandayan:2,622m)onthenorthernside,withaverageheightsof700750mabovesealevel.Streamsofsolidifiedlavaarepresentontheirslopes.

GarutRegencyiscurrentlydividedinto42districts(kecamatan),listedbelowwiththeirareasandpopulationsatthe2010Census,[2]togetherwiththenumberofvillagesineach.However,in2013theNationalLegislativeCouncilapprovedaproposaltocreateanewRegencySouthGarutRegency(KabupatenGarutSelatan)toincludethe16southernmostdistrictsoftheexistingGarutRegency,withacombinedpopulationofabout600,000.[3]

History

OnMarch2,1811,theBaluburLimbanganRegencywasdefeatedbyGovernorGeneralHermanW.Daendels(oftheDutchColonialArmy),andRegentTumenggungWangsakusumahIIresigned.BaluburLimbanganRegencythencomprised6districts:Balubur,Malangbong,Wanaraja,Wanakerta,CibeureumandPapandak.

OnFebruary16,1813,anewLimbanganRegencywasfoundedbyLt.GovernorSirStamfordRaffleswhichbecameGarutRegency.R.A.A.AdiwijayawasthefirstRegentofGarutRegency.Hegovernedfrom1813until1821.HewaswellknownforhiscallofDalemCipeujeuh.

Localproduce

Landfertilityvariesgreatlybecauseofinfluencebymountains,riversandcoastallowlands.Asaresult,agriculturalbusinessesareprimarilyplantationbased,aswellassubsistencefarmingandanimalhusbandry,followedbyforestresources.
