We are back!!!! Some of you may be wondering
about the sudden disappearance of
the newsletters from school just as
we in the school are eager to share
what we have been up to. Rest
assured, the action never ceased in
GICL, as tradition.
A quick glimpse of what we have
been doing over the past few weeks.
Literary Week, an exciting
introduction since the last year, saw
the senior school joining in the fun.
‘READ ING FOR JOY’ was the mantra.
Children as young as our pre-
schoolers joined in to make this event
an exciting one. Every aspect of the
curriculum was woven around
‘reading’ as an integral part of the
learning engagement. Book Buffet,
Read Aloud, Character Parade, DEAR,
letters to authors, twist the tale,
stories from far and wide, Book
Buddies, Spin a Yarn, ……….. the list
seems to go on. Thanks again to the
parents and grandparents who joined
in for the Share a Story sessions. The
Book Fair also saw students excitedly
sharing their personal likes and
introducing their buddies to new
worlds. The Literature Quiz marked
the end of this week, which again is
the Garodia tradition to mark our
Founder’s Day.
Insight into the world of sea An insight into the world of sea
continued… What is there at the
bottom of the sea? Audio visual
presentations, music and movement,
enhanced the children of T1 get to
know about a few more sea creatures
and the sea bed. How they admired
the underwater life… The little minds
of T1 came out with adjectives like
amazing, nice, wonderful, superb,
pretty etc.
Is sea water salty? A science
experience enjoyed by the children
helped them to understand it better.
Listen, Search and Hop
away... Yes, the class of T2 had fun playing
the game of Hopscotch. This game
although was with a difference.
Instead of numbers, we had sight
words in each box. In a team of 2-
one child chose a word from the box
and challenged the other to look for
it and hop without losing balance.
Indeed a lot of fun learning!
Ahoy there me hearties! Beware...
The pirates were seen strutting
around adorned in their pirate attire
completing the look with eye
patches, bandanas, boots, swords
and even guns! The innocent looking
faces were transformed into
ferocious looking pirates. That’s not
all – they enjoyed adventurous games
like going under and over the tables,
chairs in search of treasure, finding
the opposites in teams and framing
sentences and moving closer to the
treasure chest with every correct
answer. Thursday was indeed a

Terrifying one! We appreciate the
efforts and creativity put in by the
parents to make it a fun filled day.
The activities don’t end here- children
had hands on experience using a ruler
to make horizontal and vertical lines
thus making a rectangular photo
frames. Illustrations of the teachers
and children in the frame completed
the picture giving it a well finished
look.
Crawl fast, hop in, roll out, dance and
run were few action based words
that T2 enjoyed playing. They read
these words and acted it out with
great enthusiasm and teamwork.
Our little inquires of T1 enjoyed their
field trip to Lion’s Garden where they
got to explore different trees, bushes,
creepers , water plants and so on….It
was great to see the children use
their senses where they got to feel,
see, touch and hear the different
sounds by observing their
surroundings.

Festivities are just around
the corner!!! Janmashtami celebrations marked
the major event in the first week of
August. Our tiny tots were dressed
up in colourful attires of “Krishna”
and”Radha”. Not only this young
ones also took part in a traditional
activity- ‘Matki Phod’ in order to give
tribute to Natkhat Kanha.
Franzi’s 8th Birthday The German learners celebrated
Franzi’s Birthday during their German
class. All the students made Birthday
cards and decorated them with
different pictures and colours. In
addition to it they also learnt a few
German words like; numbers 4-10,
some birthday vocabulary, they also
rehearsed a Song: ‘Zum Geburtstag
viel Glück’ (Happy Birthday to you).
The celebration of Franzi’s Birthday
included songs and dance. The
students had a chocolate cake and of
course Felix and Franzi accompanying
them. Everyone enjoyed the cake and
thus, made Franzi's day!
The experience was magnificent! The
children had come up with their own
ideas of celebrating the Birthday and
the class was full of enthusiasm! The
students learnt German in a playful
and party manner.
Religion As part of Social Studies, Grade 1 is
studying the topic of Religion. The
class was divided into 5 groups, and
each group made presentations on
the different Religions prevalent in

India. The topics were on a) Jainism
b) Sikhism c) Islam d) Christianity e)
Hinduism f) Zoroastrianism. All the
topics were further explained to give
more clarity.
Designing the Stone Age
way! As kids of grade 2 are getting
themselves acquainted with the
Stone Age man’s world during their
Social studies lectures they couldn’t
wait to create their very own stages
for making wheels, carts and rafts
during workstations throughout the
week.
They had to draw, label and show the
wheel, carts, sledge or rafts being
developed from raw materials in the
first step to the final Stone Age
vehicle in the fourth step. This
activity helped boost their spirits and
brought out their creativity. Also it
made them think of different
materials that were available to the
early humans and the techniques
they could use to design a mode of
transport during those times.
Reader’s Theatre Students of Grade 4 are actively
participating in the Reader’s theatre.
The plays have built in strategies to
help students improve their Reading
skills. To get a dramatic approach to
The Reader’s Theatre, Students read
a story from their prescribed Oxford
English Text Book and decided to
make their own Play script .This
clearly shows the interest they have
developed and are curious to do a
good representation. This will give a
scope to every student to emphasize
and create interactive improvisational
performance with their creation.
Creating a website Students of grade 5 have learnt to
create a free website on weebly.com
Weebly is a site which gives millions
of people a surprisingly easy and
affordable way to create a site that is
as unique as they are. With a Weebly
site, students can create a website
showcase their achievements, and be
an authority on personal and
professional interests. Students have
created a website on their favourite
vacation place and have created
webpages having information about
the place, hotels, places to visit and
the contact address. Students were
very excited to have their own
website and were very creative to put
their own ideas to create a
professional kind of website.
They have published their website
and can also share their website link.
Elocution Competition Students of Grade 5 participated in
an inter house Elocution Competition.
All the four houses have the following
winners
1. Aisha Lowe
2. Niyati Shah
3. Sanjna Sridhar
Consolation Prizes
Tejas Tagra
Shreyas Katkoor
Being eloquent and articulate helps
putting ones point across and
commanding an audience's attention,
to become more persuasive and
ultimately improves communication
skills. Our mission is to help children
speak with clear diction and to teach
them the rules of rhetoric. The
students presented different stories
to the audience and spoke with clear
diction and with confidence.
Even in this age of emails, text
messaging and social networking, the
spoken word is still the most effective
way of communicating and to
succeed in the world today, children
and adults need to be able to
communicate with confidence. The
elocution competition fulfilled the
main objective of Language Art
Program.
Hindi Handwriting
Competition Students of our school celebrated
Hindi Diwas on 24th September’2015.
The celebration began with the
morning assembly conducted in Hindi
and during the day, a Hindi
handwriting competition was held in
the primary section .The purpose
behind this was to encourage them to
improve their handwriting and
neatness in writing Hindi and also to

enhance their love towards the
language.
With the same zest and enthusiasm
on 24th September’ 2015, we held a
competition on Hindi story
telling/recitation in the auditorium.
Hindi story telling and
recitation competition Elocution in an any language helps
students to exhibits their speaking
skills with confidence .Every student’s
gets an opportunity to present a story
/ poem in Hindi with all the finer
aspects of the language in the
premolar round. The selection
committee decided the short list
based on the criteria.
On the competition day the
student presented their story/poem
on stage with firmness in front of our
distinguished judges and primary
students. It was indeed a difficult and
challenging task for the judges to
choose the winners .Their words of
appreciation were very encouraging
and motivating and well received by
the audience.
Mani Bhavan: A great place
to begin with the Gandhian
Philosophy. We have studied about India’s
independence ….now it’s time we
actually see it come alive at Mani
Bhavan, which was not only the
residence of Mahatma Gandhi but
also the venue for landmark protest
movements.
GICL is pleased to announce a field
trip for kids to Mani Bhavan to pay
homage to the greatest leader–
Mahatama Gandhiji – “Bapuji”.
The Charkha (spinning wheel), the
SALT MARCH, Satyagraha, and much
more…Mani Bhavan is a “Must-See”!
A visit to this museum truly brings
alive in front of your eyes the
freedom struggle of India and the life
of Gandhi.
The three golden rules of the
Gandhian Philosophy that our little
gems carried with them were.
• Do not see bad.
• Do not use swear words, be rude or
tell lies
We must be truthful like Gandhiji
said.
• Do not listen to foul language and
walk away
When any of our friends use bad
words, we must not follow them.
A Healthy Mind Day! On the first of October, 2015 GICL
celebrated the first of its kind ‘A
Healthy mind day!’ The World Mental
Health day is observed worldwide on
every 10th of October, but at GICL we
decided to celebrate a few days
before as the students have their
term exams. The motive behind
celebrating this day was to spread the
significance of mental health.
GICL began the day with sensitizing
and prioritizing mental health status.
Later the IB students spoke about
stigmas attached to seeking help and
motivated students to give
preference to the same.
The primary school was all excited to
talk about different thoughts for
mental health given to them by our
very own thinking skills teacher Trupti
ma’am. Grade 1 pondered over
“Think Good. Do good!” and came up
with a personalized interactive book.
Some of the thoughts given to the
different primary grades were, “Like a
healthy body, have a healthy mind”,
“Respect what others feel”, “Words
are the mirror to your thoughts.
Hence speak beautifully”, “Share your
joy and it doubles. Share your sorrow
and it halves”, “Nobody is perfect.
Hence, let’s support each other to get
better” and “Emotions are more than
just Emoticons”.
On the ‘D Day, the representatives
from each class participated in
classroom role plays, dramatization.
There was also audio visual teaching,
teacher directed discussions and
creative writing themes, reinforcing
the thoughts assigned to each class.
Our secondary kids participated
through art based expression and
debates on the sensitive topics of
mental health status.
The day ended with a rejuvenating
workshop for the teachers of GICL.
“Coping with Stress” was the theme
of the workshop and it was
conducted by Ms. Anusha Neelkant.
“Our primary kids did a phenomenal
job and exceeded the level of our

expectations” says Ms. Anusha
Neelkant, our school counsellor, who
is responsible for initiating the event.
She adds, “So give thanks to our GICL
kids for spreading this message to
you: To win our pessimistic thoughts
we need a high dosage of optimism.”
Secondary
Flash from the past In 1914 India was part of the British
Empire. Two Infantry divisions
(Lahore Division and Meerut Division)
and two Cavalry divisions were
involved in the worst fighting in 1914-
1915. When the Great War came to a
head, 7 lakh Indian soldiers enlisted
themselves to fight an indecipherable
war against an unknown enemy.
They proved to the world that they
were brave, loyal, and capable
soldiers, till date, the Indian troops
are spoken of reverently in the
villages across the Western Front.
And yet, history books find little
mention of this aspect of the War.
The Indian contributions, over £100
million and more than 70,000 dead,
have been largely forgotten.
This week in French class students of
Grade 6 studied about the
involvement of Indian soldiers in
World War 1. They referred to
photographs of Indian soldiers taken
during the war; described the photos
in French, wrote about values
portrayed through the pictures; They
also read some texts on various
topics related to the daily life, the
experience of the soldiers during the
war in France, including
correspondence (letters or postcards
extracts), the monuments in France
and in India that commemorate the
Indian soldiers who died during the
western battles.
After analysing the article, and
expressing their feelings, the students
of grade 6 were filled with pride to
know about the contribution that our
Indian soldiers have made in French
history.
Literary week in French
class As part of the Literary Week
activities, the students of Grade 9 &
10 were introduced to a small slice of
French Literature also. While Grade 9
researched and acquainted
themselves with the life and works of
Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo,
Grade 10 glimpsed through the
history of French Literature, from the
medieval ‘Chansons de Gestes’ of the
‘Moyen Age’, through the
‘Renaissance’ and ‘Les siècles des
Lumières’, to the 20th century writers
and poets. The students of Grade 9
studied a poem by Victor Hugo -
‘Demain, dès l’aube’ and tried to
analyze and understand the
compelling images created by the
words. The seniors analyzed this
poem as well as another one by
Jacques Prévert – ‘Le message’ and
had fun watching its different
interpretations on YouTube.
Library in a suitcase! German students were in for a
surprise this literary week. They were
introduced to a unique mobile library.
A suitcase full of short stories, course
books, work books, audio and video
CD's and games arrived at GICL.
This mobile library will be at GICL for
about a month and students can
borrow the material and, thus,
indulge in some good reading.
Students are loving this concept and
have already selected their first set to
take home.
This will go a long way in developing
the student's reading habits and of
course improve their German.
A unique library concept indeed
brought to us by Max Müller Bhavan!
Did you know? Germany ranks no. 5
in the annual publication of books.
Young Delegates Indian International Model United
Nations (IIMUN) is one of India's
leading brands in education
conference management. It provides
the youth a platform to voice their
opinions by forwarding their drafted
resolutions to the United Nations.
Students from all over the globe
gather to discuss issues faced
worldwide under various
committees. Each student represents
an assigned country.
One of IIMUN’s chapters was held
from 20 August 2015 to 23 August
2015 at the beautiful location of
Aamby Valley, Lonavala. Six of our
students from Grade 8 participated in
the same. Siddharth Krishnamurthy,
Aayush Parekh, Khushang Zaveri,
Kriish Hate, Rohan Budhrani and Yash
Joshi were part of UNEP, BMC, Lok
Sabha, DISEC and WHO respectively.
These students got an exposure to
various foreign policies and the
format and skills required in a formal
debate. Students enthusiastically
participated in all debate sessions. In
spite of being first time MUNers and
younger to other participants, our
students spoke well and were also
involved in writing resolutions.

There was a special committee
viewing session wherein the Chairs of
all the committees posed as
delegates of various countries and
debated against each other. This was
a very fruitful exercise as it helped
students’ understanding of the code
of conduct in a MUN debate.
Students also had the opportunity of
listening to some very prominent
speakers such as Ronnie Screwvala,
Aitzaz Ahsan, Dr. Subhash Chandra,
Martin Nesirky, Bill Yotive, Amish
Tripathi, Kiran Bedi, Mani Shankar
Aiyar, Anu Aga and Vidya Balan on
topics relevant to them such as
‘Meaning to success’, ‘Following
passion vs practicality’, ‘Relations
between India and Pakistan’,
‘Differences between the debate
format at the UN and the MUN’, etc.
At the end of each day a recreational
activity was planned for the children
such as Leslie Lewis concert, DJ night,
A comedy gig by AIB and East India
company and Prom night. All in all it
was a wonderful experience for the
students. It was a great exercise in
confidence building and helped them
stretch the envelope.
Scholarship to Germany! Three of our German students
'Preeyansh Bhatia', 'Ishan Kumar' and
'Karan Manikani' of class 8 were the
lucky ones to receive the PASCH
scholarship of the German
government this year. GICL is part of
the elite group PASCH meaning
'Partners for the Future', which is an
initiative by the German government
and has 1,500 schools world-wide.
The scholarship consisted of
participation in a youth camp in
Germany for three weeks. Main
highlight of the youth camp was the
German language A2 course that the
students attended and passed the
German A2 level exam with flying
colours. Moreover, there were also
various projects, excursions and
leisure activities in store for them.
Through their three week long stay
the students also got a glimpse of
Germany, its culture and made
friends with other students from 18
different countries of the world. The
camp instilled some good habits in
the students like responsibility,
initiative, open-mindedness and they
all opened up and adapted quickly to
the new exposure. A unique
experience that our students will
cherish for a life-time!

Eco friendly Ganesha In a world which is filled with
adulterated products and harmful
chemicals, Grade 6B students decided
to make an Eco friendly safe Ganesha
with recycled newspaper/Natural
Clay (Multani Mitti) and safe non-
toxic colors in their Art class.
The process of making paper mache
which is the base ingredient for
making the idol is lengthy and
laborious one. The students of Grade
6 B enthusiastically made the clay
and they also had some processing of
the clay which had to be done at
home and it was possible only with
the kind cooperation of their parents.
The end products were beautiful,

French Indian Idol!!! The Indian Association of Teachers of
French has decided to conduct Idole
Indienne 2015, un concours de
chansons (French Indian Idol 2015) in
November. For this the First Round of
eliminations was held at Udyachal
High School, Vikhroli on 30th
September 2015.The participants
were given a list of 30 French songs
almost 2-3 weeks before the
competition and they had to come
prepared with any one song, to be
sung without any backing
track/music. The contestants were to
be judged on voice, pronunciation,
timing and overall impact. Out of the
4 schools that participated in the
competition with around 40 students,
11 students were selected for the
next round. We had 4 participants
from our school – Malishka Mehta of
Grade 7, Simran Kamat of Grade 8,
and Tiara Pawan and Ethan D’souza
of Grade 10. The students performed
well, with Ethan and Tiara being
selected for the Semi Final round to
be held on October 23rd 2015.
Wishing them all the best in their
endeavours! Felicitations et Bonne
Chance.
Equations Treasure Hunt The students of Grade 8A had a fun
time revising their knowledge of
solving equations with a treasure
hunt activity. Cards containing the
questions were stuck on the walls
around the classroom. Students
choose a card to start with and
answer the question on the bottom
of that card. To find the next question
they had to hunt for the card with
their answer at the top. They
continued in this way until they got
back to the card they started with.
The activity was thoroughly enjoyed
and the kids loved the challenge of
solving the equations at a fast pace
but with accuracy.
Study at Subway The Business studies students of Gr.
9, 10 and IB enjoyed studying the
concept of “Franchise” by visiting a
Subway restaurant at Powai. The
students had prepared questions in
advance to know about this concept.
They learnt about different aspects of
a Franchise like profit sharing, royalty
payments and quality checks made by
the Franchisor. They also came to
know about the training provided by
the franchisor and how they manage
to keep the quality standards same
across the Subway restaurants and
also what alterations are made to suit
the local preferences and tastes. The
students found it very interesting to
know the details of how does a
franchise actually work.
Mock interviews for
Business Studies students On the days 11th and 14th
September, as a part of a Business
Studies project, the students of Grade
9 had made resumes and given
interviews for the job position they’d
all applied for: Business Studies
teacher.
The aim of the project was for the
students to know how to make a
professional resume, as well as to be
given the experience of what an
interview would be like. On 14th
September, the students were
prepared to give the interview
individually, dressed in formals which
are the clothes firms expect their
employees to be dressed in. By
wearing the formal clothes and
waiting out for their name to be
called for the interview, students
were certain it would be a business

like experience. The wait in the
subject room really was intense, as all
students prepped for their interview,
which they did by going through their
resumes time and again. It felt
absolutely real for them, with the
interviewer’s panel, consisting of Ms.
Elza Eldo (IB Coordinator) and Ms.
Monika Koradia (IGCSE Coordinator
and Business Studies teacher) asking
them questions based on their
previously made resume.
Fellow student Shivank Ganesh said
“The experience was quite nerve
wracking and real. The interview and
the questions asked gave us an
absolutely real feel of how an
interview goes and the questions we
could be asked. And more over the
entire project gave us an insight into
the HR department’s method/basis of
recruiting employees. After this
project we are now very confident
that we’d use all this help we got
now, in the future. And this would
surely give us an edge as we will
better prepared in then. ”
Also student Yashi Mehta said, “The
experience has helped build up my
confidence, and even if its public
speaking or a future interview, I’d be
more confident and optimistic on
how I would proceed. Even during a
future interview I’m sure to
remember this project and take in all
the tips given to me and my
classmates and my teacher.”
The purpose of this practice session
was to give students an appreciation
of what to expect in a typical
interview and an opportunity to
refine their interviewing skills.
And on Saturday 26th September we
summed up the unit of Human
Resource with Mr. Rajiv Nambiar,
Vice President Human Resource at Go
Air coming as a guest speaker to our
school to give information to the
students about the history of Human
resource department and details
about the recruitment and selection
procedure in an organization. This
was quite an interesting session for
the students.

GICL MUN 2015 MUNing is a very essential part of a
student’s journey towards their
responsibilities in the real world. It
allows discussion of real life issues
happening around us and the
possible and sensible solutions that
countries can come up with together.
This is the first time we at Garodia
International introduced our Model
United Nations.
MUN is an extra-curricular activity in
which students typically role-play
delegates to the United Nations and
simulate UN committees. We
encourage the participants to
experience a culturally inspiring and
heated debate through adequate
research and formulate political
positions based on the given topics
and actual policies of the countries
they would represent. Delegates
participated in simulations of United
Nations sessions, debating,
negotiating, caucusing, drafting, and
voting on resolutions that addressed
world problems.
It involves substantial researching,
public speaking, debating, and writing
skills, as well as critical thinking,
teamwork, and leadership abilities.
The Head of School Dr. John Jenckes
addressed the students to be
responsible and recognize others
opinions and be risk takers and
participate actively in the sessions for
their committees. Mr. Hardik Jain, Sr.
Vice President at IIMUN graced the
occasion with his presence.
The students proceeded to the
classrooms for the committees –
Human resource, Arctic Council and
the UNEP. Delegates participated in
simulations of United Nations
sessions, debating, negotiating,
caucusing, drafting, and voting on
resolutions that addressed world
problems. The chairs and the vice
chairs of the committees were highly
impressed with the active
participation of the students at GICL,
the useful contributions made by the
student delegates for their
committees and the kind of research
which they had done for the country
which they were representing.
The session ended with the closing
ceremony showing the highlights of
the sessions in action and the prize
distribution for the Best delegate,

High commendation and Special
mention from each committee.
Authors in the making.... Grade 6 students are very
enthusiastic to launch their first book
in French. To begin with, the students
started brain storming on topics.
After choosing a particular topic, they
began working on the story and
background of the characters.
Students framed exciting and
wonderful sentences in the form of
dialogues between the characters
and did some great, colourful
illustrations.
They have kept small kids in mind
while making the books. The students
have picked titles like the invisible
hero (Le hero invisible), Famous Five
(les fameux cinq), the life of Pie (la vie
de Pie). Their enthusiasm and
knowledge about French is worth
applauding.
The students have put great efforts in
finishing half of the entire book.
Some more work to be done and the
book will be coming soon....
GICL girls the state level
