A local not-for-profit company and their volun-teers are aiming to bring an empty shop space back to life and help rejuve-nate the high street, as they launch their afford-able Furniture Scheme and cafe on Newgate Street in Bishop Auckland.“More Time” will be moving in to the old In-Shops unit at the end of October, pro-viding affordable furniture to the community. The new business will also aim to achieve commu-nity involvement through upcycling seminars and workshops, giving people the chance to save money by updating furniture at low cost and learning new skills.

‘Upcycling’ scheme to open in Newgate Street

More Time is a wholly owned trading subsidi-ary of DISC, whose main objective is to create employment pathways for people who may struggle to access mainstream em-ployment.They offer a range of services, from commercial and new-build cleans, to facilities management and empty homes projects. It also oversees the DISC Fur-niture Scheme in Newton Aycliffe as well as the More Time cafe and catering services.Business Manager, Julie Nisbet, said, “Bringing our furniture scheme to Bishop Auckland is the perfect op-portunity for us to support the community, and help

people think about upcy-cling furniture rather than struggle to purchase new items. We’re currently appealing for donations of furniture, and hope that people in the area can help us to get the project off the ground.”If you would like to donate good quality, saleable fur-niture to the project, More Time will collect for free. To arrange collection of items, or to request a volunteering application form, contact Pat Smith (Furniture Coordinator) on 01325 731294 or email [email protected]. More information can be found on their website, at www.moretimeonline.com/furniture-scheme.

Air Cadets complete ‘little and large’ to mark 50 years

On Saturday 4th October seven cadets from 2505 (Bishop Auckland) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets scaled to the summit of the 1085 metre high Mount Snowdon in Snowdonia National Park, the highest peak in both England and Wales. The aim was to reach the summit to mark 50 years since the squadron was first formed.Despite heavy rain at the start and after a massive

effort to reach the summit, the cadets held the squadron flag on the top and then took the time to take in the wonderful views as the clouds rolled in and out across the peak.On Sunday 5th October, the cadet and staff team also trekked to the 610 metre high summit of Tal-Y-Fan, officially, the smallest mountain in the national park.Sixteen-year-old Cadet Samuel Cooper from Frost-

erley said, “Getting to the top of Snowdon was hard work but really awesome. We had a great weekend”.Flt Lt Ian Pepper said, “The cadets should be really proud that they reached the summit, and what a great way to mark 50 years of the squadron”.2505 (Bishop Auckland) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets meet on a Monday and Thursday from 7pm in the Reserve Forces Centre, St Andrew’s Road, Bishop Auckland. For more information call 01388 608668 or email [email protected].

The Butterwick Hospice hosted their very first Sportsman’s Dinner event at Hardwick Hall Hotel recently. Organised in conjunction with Sporteous Speakers and Events UK, the night had a star-studded line-up of former WBC heavy-weight champion Frank Bruno and one of football’s original hard men, Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock.Comedian and compere Jed Stone entertained the crowd with jokes and

games before Bruno took to the stage following a standing ovation. Frank recalled stories ranging from his upbringing to his trio of title fights with ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.Bruno was a tough act to follow, but from the moment Razor Ruddock took to the stage he had the crowd in hysterics. Ruddock entertained the audience with personal stories from the changing rooms of Liverpool and West Ham, with the likes of

With a raffle and auction during the night, total fundraising reached an amazing £20,000, which will be split between But-terwick House and But-terwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland.A spokesperson for But-terwick Hospice said, “We would like to thank Frank, Razor, and Jed, Sporteous UK, Hardwick Hall and eve-rybody who attended and gave so generously on the night.”

Bishop Auckland singer and actor Steven Berry is taking on a total change of char-acter at the end of October for his next role.Steven will be starring in Hysterium in Durham Musical Theatre Company’s production of the hilari-ous musical comedy, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”. His recent roles for DMTC have been very serious characters; Tobias, the half starved waif in “Sweeney Todd” and Charles Darnay, the romantic leading man in “A Tale of Two Cities”.His latest role of Hysterium is a total contrast. He is a grovelling slave who is manic in his behaviour and ends up having to cross-dress as a courtesan before the plot is resolved. Steven said, “It has been a huge challenge to develop the timing needed to keep a farce, such as this, on the boil all the time. It all has

to appear as though things are happening randomly at break neck speed, but you have to be in total control at all times. I am learning to take advice from my song in the show – to keep calm!” To help him get into char-acter, he and the cast of the show decamped to the Arbeia Roman Fort recon-struction in South Shields, where they sampled what life was really like in a Commanding Officer’s House.“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” plays at the GALA Theatre, Durham, from Wednesday 29th October to Saturday 1st November with evening performances at 7.15pm and a Saturday matinée at 2.15pm. Twenty Aycliffe Angels, ac-companied by members of their families and compan-ions, attended a special Tea Party at St John’s School and Sixth Form College recently, in recog-nition of their outstanding contribution to the Second World War working at Royal Ordnance Factory Aycliffe. The Lord Lieutenant of Co. Durham, Mrs Sue Snowdon, presented the Angels with

Certificates of Apprecia-tion. Bishop Auckland St Mary’s Juniors FC have been chosen as winners of the County Durham Junior Sports Club of the Year for 2014, at a glittering awards ceremony held at Ramside Hall on Friday 10th October. Katy Mclean MBE, captain of the World Cup winning women’s rugby team, presented the award to one of the club’s youngest players, Cobie Woods, who has gone through life threatening leukaemia operations to come back to play for St Mary’s Under 8s.The club began in 1986 when it was founded by Tommy Kelly, who is now president of the club and can often be found watching the teams play. Now with Steve Coulthard

(chairman) and Catherine Pearson (club secretary), along with hard working of-ficials Will Blacklock, Kevin Waterworth, Gaven Berry and Andy Fletcher, as well as over 50 hard working volunteer managers, coaches, secretaries and clubhouse managers, the club has been brought into a position to be awarded the best Junior Sports Club of the Year in all of the county. With 20 teams and over 300 players, boys and girls, the club plays games every weekend in both the TJFA and Russel Foster leagues with the help of lots of business sponsors, Bishop Auckland College, St John’s R C and Bishop Barrington Schools. It is now one of the largest junior sports clubs in the

county.A recent visit to the club from the Rt Rev. Bishop of Durham, Paul Butler, also resulted in him getting on board as a patron of the club. “We hope to award a signed certificate from the Bishop of Durham to each member of our club to commemorate this fan-tastic achievement,” said a spokesperson. The club is currently raising funds to take three of the Under 16 boys teams and a girls team to compete in the Barcelona Junior Cup next July.“Any support will be greatly appreciated,” con-tinued the spokesperson. For more information, or to find out how you can support the club, visit www.basmj.net.

This year sees the club having two teams taking part in the Table Tennis England’s National Junior League. The A team, hoping to go one better than last season’s 4th place, started out with an 8-1 win over the Bishop “B” team with Erin Harrison scoring a fine win over Carl Draper. The B Team then took on Ormsby “C” with a 7-2 win, with Sam Hume picking up 3 wins and 2 for Erin and Matt Oldfield, with the A team picking a 6-3 win over

St Mary’s Under 16 Aces made it five wins out of five games with a good 3-0 win away at Tibs in their most recent match, with goals from Bret Davison (2) and Michael Gilbert. The Under 16 Kings game had to be cancelled after Marton resigned from the league. The Under 15s had a good 1-1 draw away at Greatham with Elliott Macnab scoring. The Under 14s had a very good 10-0 win over Ryhope to move into the next round of the county cup.The Under 13 Aces had a great 6-0 win over Nunthor-pe to keep them at the top of the league, with goals from Man-of-the-Match Adam Dovason (2), Liam Robson (2), Harry Lynch and Aaron Willoughby. The Under 13 Kings had a great away win, also at Wolviston, by 3-1 with Man-of-the-Match Matthew Moffat and goals from James Bundock, Andrew Burrows and Wissem

Blitz A from Lincolnshire. Rob Renton won all three of his singles, a double from Zak Hutchinson and a single from Tom Whit-taker. Last matches of the day saw the B team take on last year’s winners North-field, falling to a 7-2 loss with Joe Hume scoring two fine wins over much higher ranked players. The A team finished with a 9-0 whitewash over Ormsbey “B” with Zak, Carl and Rob all winning maximums to finish the day top of the table. Josh Brown also got his first ever goal for St Mary’s

with a neat finish. Dylan Dobson ran his socks off and harried for the entire game, but Joseph Ellison edged him out of Man-of-the-Match with a defensive display that showed com-posure and a determination to both win and keep pos-session of the football. The Under 9 squad are hoping to split into two teams, Aces and Kings, to accomodate more players that want to join the club and gain more experience with more playing time. The Under 8 Aces played away at Seaton Carew in a very close game with James Dent Man-of-the-Match and Charlie Berry scoring (2). Bishop Auckland Minis had a busy weekend of rugby with teams from Under 7s, Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 11s all in action at various tournaments across the region.A new look Under 7s team had matches against Durham, Darling-ton Mowden Park and Houghton. They won two matches and drew one. Bishop played exceptionally well with great attacking play and defensive team work. The Under 8s took part in a festival at Durham RUFC with Westoe, Durham and Darlington Mowden Park. In their first games of the season they won two and lost one. The team defended with determina-tion and worked hard for each other. The Under 9s travelled to Houghton for their first games of the season with two wins and a draw against Gateshead, Durham and Sunderland. The new players gelled fantastically and the team

carried on from where they finished last season. All the boys put in some great tackles, closed down their opposite numbers quickly and were well or-ganised in defence. Com-munication was excellent and some of the covering tackles in defence were awesome. Player-of-the-Match was awarded to Jake Sharp for an excellent performance both in defence and attack over all three games. The Under 11 squad kicked off their season at Hebburn in a festival against Westoe ‘A’ & ‘B’, Gateshead and Sunderland. Despite being a couple of players down through injury they won three and lost one and played some very attractive attacking rugby, which drew compli-ments from the opposition coaches. “They were aggressive and tenacious in defence and all of the boys should be proud of the effort they put into a good perfor-mance,” said their coach.
