Transit TehranYoung Iran and Its InspirationsEdited by Malu Halasa and Maziar Bahari
Like other international cities, Tehran isfilled with the religious, the irreligiousand the indifferent. However, for acapital much in the news, its secretsare well-guarded – parties where thekids let rip; falling in love withsomeone whose face is never seen;random breath-testing of pedestriansfor alcohol; religious acceptance oftranssexuals; needle exchanges inpublic parks; and martyrdomdemonstrations.
In Transit Tehran, city-insiders,
rappers, artists, writers and
photojournalists provide essays and
picture stories to bring the city to life.
Contributors include Newsha Tavakolian,
named Best Young Photographer of 2006
by National Geographic, Abbas Kowsari,
Javad Montazeri and Omid Salehi, who
have continued to document the social
transformation of their country in the
face of mass closures of newspapers and
magazines by the government.
Things are never what they seem in
the art of Sadegh Tirafkan, the new
feminist journalism of Asieh Amini, and
the romance Shi’a-style by new fiction
talent Alireza Mahmoodi-Iranmehr. Above
all, Transit Tehran celebrates the country’s
long tradition of artistic and cultural
resistance that has influenced young

“Maziar Bahari, one of the very finest Iranianjournalists still shining a light on hishomeland, has coedited with Malu Halasa, atruly insightful account of the real Iran – theIran we never hear above the hubbub ofrhetoric and allegation. This is the Iran somany of us who travel there know and bothadmire and think about. It is the Iran thatdefies politics and economics and remainssomehow simply Persian.”Jon Snow, Channel Four News
“Tehran is a city literally, photographically, musically, and sexually seething with tiny(and sometimes not so tiny) acts ofrebellion, in which swarms of mostlyanonymous young Iranians experiment withways to test the limits of freedom. The
evidence that they do so with such panache, creativity, and often courage, is to be foundin this wonderful book of brilliant essaysand evocative photographs. That they do somay be a cause of concern to thegovernment of Iran. It should be the sourceof great reassurance to all who believe inthe power of the human spirit.”Ted Koppel, Managing Editor, Discovery Channel
“Transit Tehran is one long, refreshing, sometimes funny and often disturbingsurprise. Too many portrayals of Iraniansociety are as superficial as a chador. Thisbook looks at the body and soul of a people– a young people – who have an ancientculture that is wonderfully cosmopolitan, a

“When I first went to Iran, I was mesmerisedby what lay beneath its Islamic black veil: abubbling spring of art, imagination, andyouthful interpretations of culture. Now,every reader can have the experience ofIran’s double identity and sense ofplayfulness… and think about Iran in a new
and more democratic way… this is the Iranwe outside the borders need to connect with and cherish.”Jacki Lyden, Host, National Public Radio, and author of Daughter of the Queen of Sheba
“In this remarkable book, a group of talented Iranians show us their capital cityfrom the inside out. We are shown anunexpectedly dynamic human landscape, a place full of verve and contradiction, and,one senses, great future portent, too. In their stories and their images, the authorsshare a sense of mournful love for Tehranwhich seems, much like the city itself, to besomething worth cherishing.”Jon Lee Anderson, author of The Fall of Baghdad
The Arab State and Neo-LiberalGlobalizationThe Restructuring of State Power in the Middle EastEdited by Laura Guazzone and Daniela Pioppi
This collection of essays by leadingacademics offers an alternativeapproach to the study of today’s Arab states by focusing on theirparticipation in neo-liberalglobalization rather than onauthoritarianism or Islam.
The effects of the restructuring of
traditional state power engendered by
globalization are analyzed separately,
through updated empirical research in
the political, economic and security
processes of each country considered.
Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and Saudi
Arabia are the case studies selected to
represent different paths towards a
shared model of “new” Arab state which,
far from representing an exceptional
case of resilience against global trends,
may be seen in many instances as
typifying their effects.
This book thus offers both an overall
conceptualization of change affecting
the Arab states, domestically and in their
relations with the international system,
and a series of in-depth case studies by
country and functional areas.
About the contributorsLaura Guazzone is Professor of the
Contemporary History of the Arab

Examining the prolonged Arab–Israeliconflict, Lebanese civil war and theperiodic upsurges of inter-state andinternal tensions in the Gulf region, this book looks at how civilians are atthe forefront of military conflicts andviolence in the Middle East.
The unsung heroes and real victims of
wars in the Middle East are the civilian
populations. Quickly forgotten, they have
all too frequently been forced to endure
the brutalities of war and its aftermath.
Behind political calculations, military
strategy and technological innovations,
it is the unarmed civilian population that
is expected to make the maximum
sacrifices.
Wars reflect the fears and
trepidations of ordinary men and women
about the ability of their leaders to lead
their nations during critical times and to
make sensible choices. Civilians suffer
even when clear-cut victories are
achieved in the battlefield and their
problems often begin when the guns fall
silent. Their attempts to reconstruct their
lives and livelihood are, however,
generally ignored, forgotten and
unspoken. This book attempts to redress
the balance, and reminds us that the
‘collateral damage’ of war actually has a
serious and enduring impact upon
Middle Eastern societies, and should not
be neglected.

Oil and GasPrivatizationin IranAn Assessment of the Political WillReza Molavi
Iran is the fourth biggest producer ofoil in the world, and its coastlinestretches the entire length of thePersian Gulf, one of the world’s moststrategic waterways in terms of energysecurity. The establishment of theIslamic Republic after the 1979Revolution paved the way for religiousclerics to gain ultimate political controlin Iran. A period mostly rememberedfor crackdowns on political dissenters, the only area in which differences ofopinion were tolerated was the role ofthe private and public sectors. Indeed, the role of the private sector was at thecentre of discussions between the twomain factions in the Islamic RepublicParty and later on between the twomain wings in the Majlis.
Two decades later, Iran appeared
to be entering another era of
transformation with the election of
reformist president Mohammad Khatami
in 1997. But the reformists failed to
deliver on their promises and in 2005
Khatami was replaced by the ultra
conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,
who promised the Iranian people an end
to economic hardship. Yet the structural
failure of Iran’s economy makes it very
difficult for any president, whether
conservative or reformist, to deliver on
such promises.
In this book, Reza Molavi explores the
potential for the privatization of some of
Iran’s national institutions, in particular
whether there is the political will to
privatize the Iranian oil and gas industry.
He begins by providing a theoretical
basis for the determination of
privatization policy. Subsequently, he
explores a set of international precedents
and then presents an historical overview
of Iran since World War II in order to
build a context for the determinants of
privatization policy in Iran. Finally, the
specific background, legal and
institutional framework, and policy-
maker perspectives are incorporated into
the overall analysis. Together, these three
approaches provide a cumulative
understanding of the determinants of
privatization policy in Iran.
About the author Dr Reza Molavi is the Executive Director
of the Centre for Iranian Studies at the
University of Durham. He is also the
Executive Editor of The Iranian Journalof National Interest, and a Senior
Research Associate at the Centre for
Strategic Research, Tehran. His current
research interests are security issues,
foreign policy, political economy and
environmental policy in Iran and in the
Middle East.

In this book, Hassan A. Barari criticallyassesses the status of Israeli Studies inthe Arab World.
He argues that a lack of significant
area studies skills in most Arab counties,
coupled with the persistence of the
Arab–Israel conflict, the injustice that
has befallen the Palestinians and the
hegemonic ideological discourses, have
greatly informed the epistemology and
ontology of Arab scholarship on Israel.
The author concludes that with a few
rare exceptions, Israeli Studies in the
Arab World remains weighed down by
one-sided projections, ideological spin,
prejudice and a necessity to expose
rather than to understand the other.
About the authorHassan A. Barari is a Professor of Middle
Eastern Politics at the University of
Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). He is a former
Senior Fellow at the United States
Institute of Peace (USIP) based in
Washington, DC. He was also a researcher
and lecturer at the University of Jordan.
From the late Ayatollah Khomeini’sfatwa against Salman Rushdie, to theextremism of the Taliban and the massmurder of the September 11th attacks, the image of Islam as a violent andanti-Western faith has featureddominantly in the global mass media.
In this book, Elzain Elgamri sets out
to refute such generalisations. Taking
into account the historically conditioned
Orientalist discourses, in light of the
polarized relationship between Islam and
the West, and deconstructing what has
actually been reported in the British
quality press, he argues that what has
actually been journalistically covered is
an incomplete fragment of a much more
complex situation. He argues that while
events have frequently been represented
by the media as an archetype of Islam, in
actual fact there is no single monolithic
Islam and, consequently, no single
monolithic Muslim community.
About the authorElzain Elgamri is a media researcher,
journalist and translator who works for
the ECSSR in Abu Dhabi.

It has been argued that the countriesof the Arabian Peninsula need toprovide a system of democraticrepresentation that fully takes into account their own history and culture.
This raises many questions. Can their
established tradition of rule provide the
basis for the evolution of an Arab form
of constitutional monarchy? Should the
West be seeking to encourage national
indigenous evolution rather than
working to impose Western systems?
What are the risks of change and what
has been achieved so far?
This book addresses these issues and
examines the drivers, progress and
challenges for future change in this
vitally strategic area of the world.
About the editorsProfessor Anoushiravan Ehteshami is
Professor of International Relations at
the University of Durham. Dr Steven
Wright is currently Assistant Professor in
International Affairs at Qatar University.
This timely collection of papers shedsnew light on the foreign policy ofIran under President Khatami andinto the period of PresidentAhmadinejad.
Iran’s foreign policy during this period
was based on four principles: the rejection
of foreign domination; the preservation of
Iran’s independence and territorial
integrity; the defence of Muslim rights;
and the maintenance of mutually peaceful
relations with all non-belligerent states.
This book examines the implications of
these principles, and provides analysis of
Iran’s diplomacy with regard to ongoing
developments such as the War on Terror,
the conflict in Iraq, American–Iranian
relations, British–Iranian Relations,
European–Iranian Relations and
Arab-Iranian Relations.

HajjReem Al Faisal, with an introduction by Seyyed Hossein Nasr
The Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca is ajourney of self-discovery and anexploration of man’s relationship withthe Creator. Mecca is located in an aridland where nothing grows, and few, if any, earthly distractions exist. The pilgrim is therefore left alone face to face with God.
Each stage of the Hajj should bring
the pilgrim closer to the objective of self
knowledge. However, attaining this
depends on each person’s natural ability
and desire to do so. For this reason, no
two Hajj journeys are ever alike, and
every Hajj pilgrim leaves the great
journey forever altered from the person
they were beforehand.
It is difficult to capture the Hajj in
text or visually since the Hajj is larger
than any possible description. No book or
photograph can ever give the Hajj its
due. Even those who perform the Hajj
can never fully comprehend it.
Nonetheless, in this book, Saudi princess
and photographer Reem Al Faisal
attempts to document the Hajj, which
every Muslim must undertake once in his
or her lifetime. But Princess Al Faisal,
herself a Muslim, does not confine
herself to recording religious expressions.
With her photographs she also tries to
reveal the divine in man and nature. For
her, photography itself is a means of
honouring God’s presence.
About the authorsReem Al Faisal is a granddaughter of the
Saudi king Feisal. Her photographs have
been exhibited in France, Egypt, China
and Korea, and she was the first artist
from a Gulf state to exhibit in Palestine.
She is one of only a few women to have
covered the Hajj extensively in her work.
Seyyed Hossein Nasr is the University
Professor of Islamic studies at George
Washington University, and has lectured
widely throughout the United States,
Western Europe and most of the Islamic
world. The author of more than thirty
books and over 300 articles, his works
concern not only various aspects of
Islamic studies but also comparative
philosophy and religion, philosophy of
art and the philosophical and religious
dimensions of the environmental crisis.

Through his use of conventional black-and-white film and a belief that a goodphotograph is the result of constantlywatching to predict the perfectmoment, Kazem Hakimi’s work harksstraight back to the photojournalism of Cartier-Bresson and those earlyMagnum photographers who were ableto capture moments that superficiallycontained nothing, but which whenprinted onto photographic paperbecame iconic images.
With the United States and Iran once
again squaring up to each other in the
Persian Gulf and the actions of firebrand
president Ahmadinejad never far from
the news, An Eye for Iran provides a
welcome opportunity to view images
that show the human side of a nation we
are being led to distrust. Here and there
someone spies the lens as the shutter
opens, but the drift of Iranian society is
caught in the postures of the everyday:
human faces in the streets, relaxing in
the parks, the glimpse of designer
clothes under a chador, pride in a
motorcycle, a young couple enjoying a
game of chess…
Throughout, Hakimi shows how well
he understands the techniques of
traditional photojournalism: he remains
both present but still invisible to the
people in the scenes his lens has
captured. The result is a captivating book
that will appeal to all those wishing to
gain an insight into life in this unique
and fascinating country.
About the authorsThe photographer, Kazem Hakimi, was
born in Shiraz in Iran, but moved to
the UK in 1974. Having trained initially
as a civil engineer, he then studied
photography in London. An Eye for Iranis based on a visit he made in 2004 to
the cities of Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashad.

The tumultuous past of the world’smost secretive nation is revealed in this unique photographic collection.
North Korea has been described as
“the land that never changes”. But its
early years witnessed unimaginable
turbulence, both in the devastation of
the Korean War and in the postwar
ferment in which military interventions
by the Chinese and the Americans both
played a part.
Comprising more than 100 rare
photos – most never before seen in print
– North Korea Caught in Timedocuments the country’s destruction and
painful rebirth. The accompanying text
analyzes the regime’s totalitarian ethos
and highlights their many official
distortions of history.

author of Pyongyang: The Hidden Historyof the North Korean Capital. He also
curated the 2002 exhibition DemocraticPeople’s Republic of Korea in Budapest.
His research focuses on North Korean
domestic history. He has visited North

Once known as the ‘Hermit Kingdom’,Korea was first prised open by Japan in1876; it opened to the West in 1883,and even today it remains a little-known country. Yet its distinct cultureand history could not be more colourfulor fascinating. This book provides thefirst-ever comprehensive history ofearly photography in Korea andidentifies many previously unattributedimages. Photographs from key privatecollections and museum archives inEurope, America and Russia arecollected in this volume, forming aunique anthology and giving insightinto the cultural heritage of Korea.

Poetry and Politicsin ContemporaryBedouin SocietyClive Holes & Said Salman Abu Athera
This book shows how colloquialBedouin poetry remains a vibrant artthat has manifold modern functions:commenting on world affairs (such asthe Arab-Israeli wars, the Gulf War, theAmerican invasion of Iraq); criticisingthe domestic policies of Arab states;highlighting poverty, discrimination, the corrupt practices of officialdom, and a compliant local media.
Each of the forty-one poems presented
within the book is transliterated and

The journal Shi‘r (1957–70) was anavant-garde poetic journal founded inBeirut which became a centre ofvarious types of poetic and culturalpractice. Over the course of time, theactivities of the group that were linkedto the journal were consolidated inwhat was called ‘the Shi‘r movement’.
Most writers who investigate and
evaluate the practices and contributions of
Shi‘r define the prose poem as central to
Shi‘r ’s aspiration for cultural change, yet
Arab critics who explore the works of the
Shi‘r group tend to treat the work of each
writer as an individual accomplishment,
and the journal as simply a meeting venue
and a medium for conducting individual
experiments and pursuing personal careers.
Basing its analysis on the major
writings about Shi‘r and the prose poem in
Arabic, English and French, this book seeks
to demonstrate that these conventional
methods of viewing the Shi‘r project still
breed misconceptions about the group and
their writings and still adversely affect
studies of the Arabic prose poem. Taking as
its basis recent groundbreaking writings on
modern cultural and literary studies in
general, and on studies of the prose poem
in particular, the book attempts to search
for a new perspective to redefine the place
of Shi‘r and the Arabic prose poem.

The Seven Veils of SethA Modern Arabic Novel from LibyaIbrahim Al-Koni, translated by William M. Hutchins
In the ancient Egyptian religion, Seth isthe evil god who out of jealousy slayshis brother Osiris, the good god ofagriculture, to seize the throne. Seth is,however, also the god of the desert andtherefore a benevolent champion ofdesert dwellers like the traditionallynomadic Kel Tamasheq, better knownas the Tuareg. In The Seven Veils ofSeth, the world-renowned, Libyan,Tuareg author Ibrahim al-Koni drawson the tension between these twoopposing visions of Seth to create anovel that also provides a vivid accountof daily life in a Tuareg oasis.
Isan, the novel’s protagonist, is either
Seth himself or a latter-day avatar. A
desert-wandering seer and proponent of
desert life, he settles for an extended stay
in a fertile oasis. If Jack Frost, the
personification of the arrival of winter,
were to visit a tropical rain forest, the
results might be similarly disastrous. Not
surprisingly, since this is a novel by Ibrahim
al-Koni, infanticide, uxoricide, serial
adultery, betrayal, metamorphosis, murder
by a proxy animal, ordinary murder, and a
life-threatening chase through the desert
all figure in the plot, although the novel
is also an existential reflection on the
purpose of human life.
Ibrahim al-Koni typically layers
allusions in his works as if he were an artist
adding a suggestion of depth to a painting
by applying extra washes. Tuareg folklore,
Egyptian mythology, Russian literature,
and medieval European thought elbow
each other for room on the page. One
might expect a novel called The Seven Veilsof Seth to be a heavy-handed allegory.
Instead, the reader is left wondering. The
truth is elusive, a mirage pulsing at the
horizon.
About the authorIbrahim al-Koni, winner of the 2005
Mohamed Zafzaf Award for the Arabic
Novel, is a Libyan Tuareg who writes in
Arabic. He studied comparative literature
at the Gorky Institute in Moscow, and was
a journalist in Moscow and Warsaw. He has
lived in Switzerland since 1993, and
authored over 50 novels, short stories,
poems and aphorisms, all inspired by the
desert. Some works have been translated
into 35 languages, including eight into
German and six into French.

Gazelle TracksA Modern Arabic Novel from EgyptMiral Al-Tahawy, translated by Anthony Calderbank
Arabic Fiction in Translation
This short but cleverly crafted novelrecounts the tale of Muhra, a youngwoman whose name means filly, bornof the descendants of the Bedouintribes who settled in Egypt’s DeltaProvince of El Sharqiyya during the18th and 19th centuries.
Past mingles with present and myth
and folklore blend with reality, as the
narrative voice records Muhra’s quest as
she seeks to discover the truth about her
mother through the old family
photographs that adorn the walls of her
grandfather’s house and other documents
hidden away in cupboards and drawers.
At once both narrator and narrated,
Muhra’s tale of self discovery is set against
the dwindling fortunes of her own people
as they struggle to preserve their identity
and culture amid the larger Egyptian
community that encroaches upon them. At
the same time her father’s wanderings and
ultimate demise reflect the waning star of
the Arab tribes who once controlled large
swathes of Egyptian territory and enjoyed
the patronage of kings and princes.
Unwilling to give up despite
premonitions of doom, Muhra’s search
leads her inexorably to the bitter truth
about her mother’s poignant life and the
tragic and untimely end of her and the
young foreigner she loved.
About the authorMiral al-Tahawy was born in the Nile Delta
province of El Sharqiyya, the daughter of a
tribe known as al-Hanadi. Al-Tahawy has
written several critically acclaimed works,
including The Tent and Blue Aubergine(both published in English by the American

Breaking KneesModern Arabic Short Stories from SyriaZakaria Tamer, translated by Ibrahim Muhawi
The first of Zakaria Tamer’s collectionsof stories to be published in English asa complete unit, Breaking Knees is adaring work of art that deals withtaboo subjects like religion andsexuality in a frank manner andexpresses an urgently felt need forchange.
The general theme of Breaking Kneesis repression: of the individual by the
institutions of state and religion and of
individuals by each other, particularly
women by men. Thus the question of
authority – political, social, sexual and
religious – forms the thematic core of the
book, with (female) sexuality receiving the
lion’s share of concern.
Political authority is manifest in
the emphasis in many stories on the
machinations of the police state – arbitrary
arrest and detention, interrogations,
corruption. Social authority expresses itself
in the patriarchal cultural order and
dominance of religious and cultural
institutions and conventions that constrain
individual freedom. Many stories stress
religious hypocrisy and the unfilled sexual
expectations of women. In bringing
together religion, politics and sexuality
(sometimes all three in the same story), the
author is telling us indirectly that these
forms of oppression are all connected.
About the authorSyrian author Zakaria Tamer is
acknowledged as one of the greatest
writers of the modern Arab world. His
writing covers a range of literary forms,
but his literary stature and influence rest
on the type of very short story included in
this work. His work has been translated
into many languages.

Polygamy and Law in ContemporarySaudi ArabiaMaha A. Z. Yamani
The topic of polygamy in Islamiccountries is generally perceived byoutsiders as something linked to haremsand Hollywood-style foreign intrigues. The practice is frequently viewedthrough sexual connotations and malepower versus female powerlessness.
Through a unique series of local
interviews with both men and women
involved in polygamy, both maritally and
professionally, this book invites the reader
into the homes and personal lives of the
people directly affected. The result is a
moving, candid examination of the frame
of mind, impulses, incentives, reasons and
circumstances that drive individuals
towards polygamy, as well as the social,
legal, economic and emotional
consequences that inevitably follow.
The book also examines the historical
origins of Islamic polygamy in Mecca and
Medina, as well as the legal situation in
Saudi Arabia today. Yamani argues that a
combination of gender differences created
through local laws and public policy
decisions, the revival of customary tribal
practices and the pressures created by the
sudden materialism of modern life have all
led towards a misapplication of the original
Islamic legal essence of the practice, and a
re-adaptation of the laws regulating it.
About the authorDr Maha A. Z. Yamani is an Honorary
Fellow at the University of Exeter and a
Saudi lawyer. She is a proud mother of
four and has direct personal experience of
polygamy in Saudi Arabia.

Unfolding IslamP.J. Stewart
Thoroughly revised in the light of theaftermath of the 9/11 attacks and thesubsequent climate of fear and hostilitytowards Muslims, this new edition ofthe acclaimed Unfolding Islam sets outto present Islam to non-Muslimreaders, and to describe for the generalreader – whether Muslim or not – howIslam has unfolded over the course oftime, and how it continues to do so.
Set in the context of the geography
and history of what may be called the
super-continent of Afro-Eurasia, the book
centres on the Koran and the life of the
Prophet Muhammad and his companions,
showing how later developments are
rooted there, right down to questions of
contemporary relevance such as the
difference between Sunni Muslims and
Shiites, Sufis and literalists, reformists and
‘fundamentalists’. Though the book is
written with the non-specialist in mind,
specialists will find new contributions to
such topics as the first writing down of
the Koran, jihad (holy war) and Islamic
attitudes to our environment.
Seen as a whole, the story of the
unfolding of Islam shows how it has
achieved its special balance of constancy
and flexibility. The controlling position of
the Prophet, the unique authority of the
Koran and the strength of the Muslim
family give the religion its enduring
central core.
About the authorThe author studied Arabic at the University
of Oxford and spent a year in Egypt before
working in Algeria for seven years. Until he
retired, he taught in the Honour School of
Human Sciences at Oxford, with a special
interest in the ecology of religion.

Islamic Studies
This book examines the development ofmedieval Islamic civilization which atits peak between the 8th and 16thcenturies made enormous andinnumerable contributions in the fieldsof science, philosophy and the arts. This is then contrasted with the post-Islamic civilization extant today, which is riven by conflicts andconfusion in its search for a true vision of Islam.
Throughout the course of the book,
Hussain critically examines Islam as a faith,
civilization and history. He considers the
vitally important questions of how Islam
the faith created its own civilization, and
why it has fallen from that pinnacle of
enlightenment into fundamentalism and
terrorism in the contemporary world.
The study addresses these questions by
identifying the keys concepts from the
Quran and the traditions of the Prophet
Muhammad which opened the doors to
Islamic civilization. Over the centuries
successive generations of Muslim rulers
and some theologians have distorted
these concepts for their own aims, and
the region has subsequently become
dominated by fundamentalism and
sectarianism.
Hussain concludes that since Islam still
exists as a major faith, to recreate Islam as
a civilization Muslims need to re-examine
Western and fundamentalist models
influencing their world, and rediscover the
original Islamic concepts which led to such
achievement in earlier centuries. Only in
this way can a new kind of Islamic
civilization be developed for the 21st
century.
About the authorAsaf Hussain has been a civil servant,

Islamic civilization and interculturalism.

The Unique Necklace,Volume IIAl-‘Iqd Al-FaridIbn ‘Abd Rabbih, translated by Issa J. Boullata
Al-‘Iqd al-Farid (The Unique Necklace) isone of the classics of Arabic literature.Compiled in several volumes by anAndalusian scholar and poet named Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih (246–328 A.H. /860–940 C.E.), it remains a mine ofinformation about various elements ofArab culture and letters during the fourcenturies before his death.
Essentially it is a book of adab, a term
understood in modern times to specifically
mean literature but in earlier times its
meaning included all that a well-informed
person had to know in order to pass as a
cultured and refined individual. This meaning
later evolved and included belles letters in
the form of elegant prose and verse, such as
poetry, pleasant anecdotes, proverbs,
historical accounts, general knowledge, wise
maxims, and even practical philosophy.
Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih’s imagination and
organization saved his encyclopedic
compendium from becoming a chaotic
jumble of materials by conceiving of it as a
necklace composed of twenty-five ‘books’,
each of which carried the name of a jewel.
Each of the twenty-five ‘books’ was
organized around a major theme and had
an introduction written by Ibn ‘Abd Rabbih,
followed by his relevant adab selections of
verse and prose on the theme of the ‘book’.
He drew on a vast repertoire of sources
including the Bible, the Qur’an and the
Hadith, and the works of al-Jahiz, ibn
Qutayba, al-Mubarrad, Abu ‘Ubayda ibn
al-Muthanna and several others, as well as
the diwans of many Arab poets, including
his own poetry.
Volume I of this translation of al-‘Iqd al-Farid (Garnet Publishing, 2006) contained
four of its twenty-five ‘books’. The present
volume, Volume II, contains two more.
About the translatorThe translator Issa J. Boullata is a literary
critic and scholar, who also writes fiction.
Formerly Professor of Arabic Literature at
McGill University, Montreal, Canada, he has
published several books, including Trendsand Issues in Contemporary Arab Thought(1990) and a novel in Arabic, Homecomingto Jerusalem (1998), in addition to
numerous studies of Arabic literature and
translations of Arabic poetry and novels.

Al-Qushayri’s Epistle on SufismAl-Risala al-qushayriyya fi ‘ilm al-tasawwufAbu ’l-Qasim al-Qushayri, translated by Alexander D. Knysh
Great Books of Islamic Civilization
Written in 437/1045, Al-Qushayri’sEpistle on Sufism has served as aprimary textbook for many generationsof Sufi novices down to the present. Itgives us an illuminating insight intothe everyday lives of Sufi devotees ofthe eighth to eleventh centuries C.E.and the moral and ethical dilemmasthey were facing in trying to strike adelicate balance between their asceticand mystical convictions and theexigencies of life in a society governedby rank, wealth, and military power.
In al-Qushayri’s narrative, the Sufi
‘friends of God’ (awaliya’ ) are depicted as
the true, if uncrowned, ‘kings’ of this world,
not those worldly rulers who appear to be
lording it over the common herd of
believers. Yet, even the most advanced Sufi
masters should not take salvation for
granted. Miracle-working, no matter how
spectacular, cannot guarantee the Sufi a
‘favorite outcome’ in the afterlife, for it
may be but a ruse on the part of God who
wants to test the moral integrity of his
servant.
In the Epistle, these and many other
Sufi motifs are illustrated by the anecdotes
and parables that show al-Qushayri’s
fellow Sufis in a wide variety of contexts:
suffering from hunger and thirst in the
desert, while performing pilgrimage to
Mecca, participating in ‘spiritual concerts’,
reciting the Qur’an, waging war against the
‘infidel’ enemy and their own desires,
earning their livelihood, meditating in a
retreat, praying, working miracles,
interacting with the ‘people of the market-
place’, their family members and peers,
dreaming, and dying.
About the translatorAlexander Knysh is Professor of Arabic and
Islamic Studies at the Department of Near
Eastern Studies, University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor. His research interests include
Islamic mysticism and Islamic theological
thought in historical perspective as well as
Islam and Islamic movements in local
contexts (especially Yemen and the
Northern Caucasus). He has numerous
publications on these subjects, including
four books.

An Essay by the UniquelyWise ‘Abel Fath Omar Bin Al-Khayyam onAlgebra and EquationsAlgebra wa Al-MuqabalaOmar Al-Khayyam, translated by Roshdi Khalil
‘Abel Fath Omar Bin Al-Khayyam was aPersian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, physician and poet, mostfamous for his Rubaiyat, one of theclassics of world literature. His workgreatly influenced the development ofmathematics, particularly analyticalgeometry, and was unsurpassed formany centuries. Although he isgenerally better known as a poet, his work as a philosopher, scientist and mathematician was a majorcontribution to the growth of humanknowledge.
Omar Al-Khayyam’s famous book on
algebra and equations is considered to be
perhaps his most important contribution to
mathematics. The book deals with the
solution of quadratic and cubic equations.
Al-Khayyam solved all possible cases of such
equations by using geometrical approaches,
sometimes involving conic sections,
parabolas and hyperbolas. Historians of
science, teachers of mathematics and
mathematicians themselves will find the
book both interesting and informative.
About the translatorRoshdi Khalil is Professor of Mathematics
at the University of Jordan in Amman. His
fields of specialism include functional
analysis, operator theory, and
approximation theory.

Might Over Right provides a criticalaccount of one of the most remarkablestories in the twentieth century’shistory of international relations – thehistory of how in the relatively shorttime of 30 years, Zionist leadersmanaged, with the help of Westernsupporters but mainly the British, towrestle a country away from itsinhabitants, and in the process toprofoundly affect the course ofinternational relations andfundamentally transform the history of the Middle East.
Extensively documented, relying mostly
on Zionist, British and Israeli sources, and
sweeping in scope, the book makes a
crucial contribution to the growing effort
to challenge the simplistic and reductive
accounts in media and scholarship in the
West – one of the principal causes of the
perpetuation of the conflict.
Might Over Right goes beyond the
Israeli new historians’ accounts that focus
on specific aspects of the
Zionist–Palestinian confrontation. It also
goes beyond the establishment of the
state of Israel in 1948 to critically analyze
the latest dimensions of the Arab–Israeli
conflict, and of the continued
Israeli–Palestinian confrontation.

The people of the Iraqi Marshlands areheirs to a culture that can be tracedback thousands of years, and prior tothe 1970s (i.e. before they weresystematically desiccated by Saddam),these marshes comprised the largestwetland ecosystem in the Middle East.
It is also a site considered by many
scholars as the inspiration for the biblical
Garden of Eden in the Bible and the Koran,
as well as the site where the Great Flood
occurred, and the birthplace of the
patriarch Abraham. The Iraqi Marshlands
are therefore an area of major significance
in the history of the three monotheistic
religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
The Iraqi Marshlands, Its People andCulture will be the definitive text for all
those wishing to develop an in-depth
understanding of a rich cultural legacy and
lifestyle that survives today only as a
fragmented cultural inheritance. The book
clearly and compassionately illustrates
how, until recent decades, the economy
and lives of the Ma’dan (Marsh Arabs) that
spans over five thousand years remained
similar to the ancient practices of their
Sumerian forbears, and how the current
marsh dwellers with their impressive reed
houses (mudhif ) and long canoes
(mashufs) are our only link with this rich
cultural past.
The book is also a moving testament to
these forgotten people, whose habitats,
villages and very lives were progressively
snuffed out by the Iraqi government
during the repressive reign of Saddam
Hussein. It highlights precisely how and
why Saddam methodically tried to destroy
these wetlands, and explores the enormous
international efforts now underway to
restore them. Finally, the book also
demonstrates the inevitable environmental
consequences of Saddam’s massive
destruction of the marshes: the extinction
of endangered species of birds, animals
and plants that were endemic to the
marshes and are found nowhere else.

History
In the Wake of the DhowThe Arabian Gulf and OmanDionisius A. Agius
History
The Arabian dhow is one of the mostevocative images of the Gulf, the RedSea and the Indian Ocean. The greatcargo dhows represented a flourishingtrade which stretched from theMediterranean up to China from thesixteenth to the eighteenth centuries.
When the pearling industry was at its
height in the 19th and early 20th centuries,
hundreds of pearling dhows were actively
employed, carrying thousands of seamen
diving for the finest pearls, a commodity
much sought by the Western powers. In
times of war, the dhows were magnificent
fighting vessels and associated with the
piracy so prevalent in these waters.
This book is a product of over two
hundred interviews with shipwrights and
seamen in the Arabian Gulf and Oman over
a period of nine years. It compares
information given firsthand with the
literature already written on the dhow and
on Arab seafaring in the past seventy years,
much of which was simply technical.
Documenting the dhow as an important
element in the prosperity of the area before
the discovery of oil, we find in this book the
geographical conditions and the historical-
linguistical background of each dhow-type,
the life-pattern in its role as cargo,
pearl-diving, pirate and slaving vessel and
also how the seafaring communities
interacted with the dhow world.
About the authorDionisius A. Agius is Professor of Arabic and
Islamic Material Culture at the University of
Exeter. His research is mainly on the
comparative and historical aspects of Arabic
language, society and culture, focusing
particularly on the semantics of material-
cultural terminology, with a special interest
in ship-types and ship-building techniques
in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.

History
First published in 1960, Kings andCamels is a straightforward account ofhow an American went to work in SaudiArabia and came home to America torealize how little the average Americanunderstood the people in the area.
Butler presents his material in the form
of an informal account of his personal
experiences in the Middle East, both while
he lived there, working for the Arabian
American Oil Company (ARAMCO), and as a
successful lecturer and writer who has
returned to the area often.
The book goes behind the scenes in the
Arab world, and into private audience with
the legendary Ibn Saud. It explains Islam,
the religion of the Arabs. It introduces the
reader to the desert Bedouin, and the Arab
of the cities. It focuses on human interest,
on the Americans who lived and worked in
Saudi Arabia. Above all, the book’s emphasis
is on the cultivation of understanding
between the American and Arab peoples.
About the authorGrant C. Butler worked in oil industry
public relations for ten years, both in the
Middle East and in the United States. He
also gave thousands of lectures on the
Arabs and the Middle East across America.

A Journey fromAleppo to JerusalemAt Easter, A.D. 1697Henry Maundrell
Folios Archive Library
On Friday 26 February, 1697, theReverend Henry Maundrell rode out ofthe city of Aleppo in present-day Syriato begin what would become an 83-dayEaster pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Hisjourney was to inspire the eventualpublication of this small book oflasting importance, A Journey FromAleppo to Jerusalem At Easter A.D. 1697,which remains today one of the classicsof early travel writing.
Intended initially to be simply a diary,
Maundrell received such interest from
those he showed it to that he eventually
decided to prepare it for publication.
Although numerous other books had been
published by other European travellers to
the region, Maundrell’s was unusual in that
it was packed with precise, factual
information about the antiquities of the
Middle East, rather than simply relating
personal adventures or tales of the ‘exotic
Orient’.
This present volume, reprinted from
the sixth edition (1740) which also
includes an account of the author’s trip
to Mesopotamia, now makes Maundrell’s
observations accessible to modern readers.
Travelling across Syria to Latakia, down the
Syrian and Lebanese coasts and inland to
Jerusalem and the Holy Land, and then
visiting such places as Damascus, Baalbek
and Tripoli on the return trip to Aleppo,
Maundrell’s meticulous descriptions of
castles, mosques, churches, fortresses and
other archaeological sites of note, are sure
to be of great interest to all those
fascinated by the history of this unique
part of the world.
About the authorHenry Maundrell was born in 1665 and
attended Exeter College, Oxford in 1682. In
1695, he was elected to the Chaplaincy at
the English Levant Company’s office in
Aleppo, Syria. Plagued by ill health for
much of his life, Maundrell died in 1701,
shortly before publication of the first
edition of A Journey From Aleppo toJerusalem At Easter A.D. 1697.

Topics covered by the author include
Arab attitudes to alcohol, coffee and qat;
family life including marriage and children;
warfare; religion; folklore and
superstitions; local politics; and attitudes
towards the British.
Yet no matter what the subject,
throughout each account shines the
author’s obvious affection for the
tribesmen and women with whom he lived
and worked for the best part of ten years.
The result makes for a fascinating insight
into what was, and still remains, a
little-known Arabian society.

Army who spent the majority of his time in
service in Yemen.
First published in 1923, Kings of Arabiaexamines the history of Yemen fromthe 17th century to the aftermath ofthe First World War.
The book begins with an overview of

The author next treats the British
ascent to the hinterland and their
subsequent retreat to Aden. The book
concludes with the decline of Turkish
influence, the events of the First World
War, and the rise to power of the
independent Arab Kings.
With the latter parts of the book laced
with Jacob’s own experiences of the events
as they unfolded, Kings of Arabia is sure to
prove invaluable to those seeking an
insight into the British perspective of this
key period of Yemen’s history.
