Newsletter

Words from the President Today I sat down and wrote thoughtfully about my mother turning 98, making quilts for her, and other serious reflections. Apparently it wasn't meant to be in our newsletter as my internet is down and I'm reduced to using my phone. I'm sure you're all getting your summer projects ready for these too hot to go outside days. It's always so motivational to see our Show & Tell quilts - you're all amazing. We'll be having "Lucky Logo" at our June meeting! Be sure to wear your Garland Quilt Guild logo pin, get a raffle ticket at the membership table when you come in and maybe win the prize. Don't have a pin? You can purchase one at the membership table as well. It's hot, it's summer, and it's Texas. Happy Quilting, Suzy Boyle, President

Programs News

The summer has a loaded bases line-up of lectures, activities and workshops. At the June 7th meeting, Deborah Brizendine shares her “Quilter’s Journey”. You can hit a home run by taking her paper piecing workshop on June 11, 2016. The project is a paper pieced placemat and the pattern is a Judy Niemeyer pattern. The class is filling up so stop by and sign up. Fee is $45.

On July 5th, we will have the opportunity to view and get inspired by the creative Hoffman Challenge winners. We will have a bed-turning / trunk show including blue ribbon quilts including “Gypsy Dancer” and “Garden Stars”. Quilts include international quilts, modern quilts, and all type of construction methods. It definitely is a show stopping collection. Come see if you can find the 2015 Challenge fabric (below) in each of the quilts in the trunk show!

Alice Wilhoit will be our August 2nd speaker and show us her “Light Hearted Trunk Show”. Her applique workshop follows on August 6th. http://alicewilhoit.com/

Rally Day?? TAQG??

What, you ask, is Rally Day? And what exactly is TAQG? The Texas Association of Quilt Guilds (TAQG) is a confederation of over 30 guilds in the North and East/Central Texas area. Made up of representatives from each guild, TAQG offers assistance of all kinds to the local guilds, and their big annual event is RALLY DAY, which is held the second Saturday of July. For more information visit the TAQG web page: http://taqg.org

COMMUNITY SERVICE/SPECIAL PROJECTS

Thanks to all the quilt guild members who helped make the trunk show a success at the senior center in April.

The Pleasant Valley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Garland appreciated our visit, and of course we had a great time. If one hour every other month brightens some senior’s day, it’s certainly worth the effort, besides we get to look at each other’s quilts. So save the date for the next volunteer opportunity. June 13th, Monday, at 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm, we will visit Senior Care Beltline, located at 106 North Belt-Line Road, Garland. Bring some quilts, have some fun, and brighten the day for others. Jeanne Blalock, Special Projects

New Banners for Our Host Church

In appreciation for the generosity and cordiality the First Presbyterian Church has shown our Guild, a committee has been formed to make new banners, following the liturgical year seasons, as suggested by the church pastor. Marsha Meeks has organized the committee, and volunteer banner-makers include Jeanne Blalock, Suzy Boyle, Evelyn Brown, Carla Byrom and Mary Jo Ferril. Dana Dunlap will serve the committee as church liaison and advisor. Right now, the committee members are deciding their season and designing their banners. All banners will be completed in 2016, and we will show the finished products to the Guild in Show and Tell!

Hospitality Wow it is hard to believe that half of 2016 is almost behind us. I want to thank Betty and Linda for stepping in the last few months and lending a hand in the kitchen. I very much appreciate the help. Want to send Birthday greetings to the June birthday members: Debbi Booth, Carla Byrom, Crystal Chapman, Dan Chenault, Lee Ann Christ, Fiona Egan, Valerie Hubbard, Jean Johnson, Sheila Kelly, Carolyn Kerr, Marsha Meeks, Gail Pearce, Robbin Peck, Laney Rios, Virginia Slater, Gay Spears. I know Shirley Michie can't be with us but want to wish her a Happy Birthday as well. We invite our Birthday Guild members to celebrate our tradition of those who are celebrating birthdays the month of our meeting to bring refreshments for our meeting. This could be appetizers, beverages, desserts, fruit and veggie, be creative as we all know quilters are. If you make something you would like to share the recipe for your creation bring that too and I will add it to next month’s Hospitality paragraph. Remember "Sewing one stitch at a time grows friendships". Diana Fisher, Hospitality Chairperson

Sack Lunch Ministry

The demand for the church’s sack lunches has grown tremendously, with the church now giving away about

35 lunches a week to the homeless or the hungry. The following is the list of items for the sack lunch ministry operated by our facility location host, First Presbyterian Church. Just pack the lunches in a small brown paper sack with non-perishable items, such as: canned tuna or chicken salad peanut butter and crackers cheese and crackers chips fruit cup cookies pudding

You may also include a drink (although not necessary) as well as a napkin and spoon. Items should not require a can opener. Bottled water is also much appreciated... You can find many of these items at a Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Wal-Mart, etc. The church also collects pancake mix and syrup. We also have a tip jar at the sign-in table, and if everyone were to throw in their loose change we could donate a great deal to the church each month. Thank you so much!
