1978Formulation of advanced polymer technologies in Cleveland-based laboratories

Introduction of StressPly® membrane, the first high-performance modified bitumen roofing system manufactured in North America

i n n o v a t i o n t i m e l i n e 1980

When Garland introduced modified bitumen technologies to North America in the 1970s, the

market was looking for a higher-performing alternative to conventional built-up roofing (BUR)

systems. Today, as building owners and the architectural community increasingly embrace

sustainable building performance, modified bitumen technology is more relevant than ever.

Unparalleled strength and low-temperature flexibility help modified bitumen roofs achieve the

most critical sustainability characteristic of all — longevity. In addition, innovative advances

in manufacturing processes, application methods, and surfacings make modified bitumen

technology an attractive alternative to conventional roofing in eco-sensitive applications,

such as hospitals and schools.

The Garland family of modified bitumen roofing solutions encompasses a variety of

sophisticated polymer chemistries, innovative application technologies, unique scrim designs,

and exciting surfacing options that combine to create a new industry standard for life-cycle

return on investment in high-performance buildings. Your local Garland representative

is backed by the financial strength and resources of a leading researcher, developer, and

manufacturer of roofing technologies. As such, he can help you determine which system

solutions are most appropriate for your functional, aesthetic, and budgetary requirements.

As a member of the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC®), Garland offers a number of reflective surfacing options for applications where energy-cost reduction is a primary goal. To complement the environmentally friendly StressPly EUV system, we offer a factory-applied, bright white, highly reflective Sunburst® mineral surfacing, which is also compatible with many StressPly membranes. Our two ENERGY STAR® qualified solutions, Pyramic® white acrylic elastomeric coating and our White-Knight® / White-Stallion® multi-purpose urethane restoration coatings, can reduce energy requirements by as much as 60 percent. For a highly reflective aluminized surface, we offer Silver-Shield® premium fibered aluminum and Garla-Brite® non-fibered aluminum roof coatings.

For enduring reflectivity, white aggregate surfacing retains its resistance to UV degradation longer than bright white reflective membranes. Aggregate surfacing, which is variously available in shades of tan, white, and gray, provides the added benefits of a thick barrier coat, an extra layer of flood coat waterproofing, and resistance to fire and abrasion.

For the ultimate in environmentally conscious design, Garland’s GreenShield® vegetative surfacing, with a StressPly modified bitumen system as its waterproofing layer, will provide decades of environmentally responsible service.

This StressPly roof with aggregate surfacing has remained watertight since its installation in 1986, with only routine maintenance.

Since the first generation of StressPly modified bitumen roofing was

introduced, StressPly and its extended family have been used in new

construction and retrofit applications on a wide variety of commercial,

industrial, educational, governmental, retail, and healthcare applications

across the United States of America, Canada, South America, Europe,

and Asia. With a guaranteed service life of 20 years or more, Garland

modified bitumen solutions achieve a lower life-cycle cost than other

low-slope roofing systems by combining the highest quality materials

with a stringently monitored installation process that optimizes the

customer’s return on investment.

For applications where an even longer life cycle is desired, or where ponding is a serious concern, Garland also offers the Millennium® series of premium modified coal tar pitch membranes – the only membrane in its class available with a factory-applied mineral surfacing. Traditional aggregate and reflective coatings are also available. Millennium polyester/fiberglass-reinforced SBS-modified coal tar membrane is the industry’s only modified membrane expressly developed to take advantage of the natural waterproofing properties of coal tar pitch. As a polymer-modified coal tar pitch solution, Millennium membranes come with a factory-applied mineral surface that eliminates the need for heavy aggregate surfacing. During application, the membranes are heat-welded at the seams to optimize seam integrity. Alternatively, Millennium systems can be flood-coated and topped with aggregate, or covered with a reflective coating in the field.

Modified bitumen roofs combine multiple layers of waterproofing with

a membrane cap sheet for added protection. Garland modified bitumen

technology has been engineered … and reengineered … year after year …

to provide superior resistance to tearing, weathering, UV rays, wind,

thermal variations, chemicals, and punctures.

garland offers a full range of application options

Cold-process adhesives frequently out-perform the adherence properties of conventional hot-applied systems, and are ideal for applications where environmental, logistical, or odor and safety concerns make hot asphalt or torch-applied techniques impractical.

Self-adhering systems are applied by removing a release backing from the membrane before positioning it in place, thereby significantly reducing installation-related equipment and labor. They also eliminate the odors associated with solvents, the fumes associated with hot asphalt, and the open flames associated with torch systems.

Today’s hot asphalt and coal tar pitch adhesion solutions can be used in conjunction with fume-inhibiting technologies to minimize odor and safety hazards.

Torch application is also available for non-combustible structures, such as high-rises and other logistically difficult applications.

3. The base layer of every Garland multi-layer system consists of High Performance Roofing (HPR®) underlayments that meet or exceed ASTM standards. Our underlayments are constructed using various combinations of polyester and fiberglass to meet specific performance requirements, such as fire resistance.

4. A high-performance bonding adhesive ensures lasting interply adhesion, while a final adhesive flood coat bonds the aggregate to the membrane, as shown here.

5. Each membrane combines layers of fiberglass (with or without polyester reinforcement) and layers of a patented modified rubber asphalt or coal tar pitch specially formulated to meet precise specifications for tensile strength, low-temperature flexibility, UV-resistance, and other functional requirements.

6. The surfacing layer (aggregate shown here) is specified to meet the aesthetic and functional requirements of every application. No manufacturer offers a more comprehensive range of surfacing options.

Original research and development is the cornerstone of Garland asphalt-based modified bitumen technology. Our unique membranes combine premium raw materials, using patented manufacturing processes that are independently monitored for compliance with established ISO 9001:2008 quality control procedures. Select membranes incorporate recycled content, such as post-consumer recycled tires, boiler slag, and recycled glass, for enhanced sustainability.

Acquisition of the Millennium line of technologically advanced, polymer-modified, coal tar membranes for commercial applications

For schools, healthcare facilities, and other odor-sensitive applications, our Weatherking® cold-applied rubber-modified asphalt interply adhesive provides a bond that surpasses hot-asphalt adhesion. Our popular Black-Knight® family of high-performance polymer-modified adhesives (sold as Black-Stallion® in Canada) reduces most of the hazards associated with a coal tar application. These adhesives can be applied hot or cold, and can be used with modified coal tar systems or as a premium flood coat with asphalt systems. For applications prone to excessive wind uplift, the Insul-Lock® family includes modified urethane adhesives that meet or exceed wind uplift codes, and features both low-rise and fast-setting adhesives, and adhesives that bond with a variety of insulations and decks without the need for special application equipment, eliminating the damage associated with fastener penetrations.
