News ReleaseLinn County Sheriff Brian Gardner Announces

    Re-Election CampaignMarch 23, 2012

On today's date I submitted my nomination papers for the June 5, 2012, Democratic primaryelection and I am now officially announcing my candidacy for re-election to the office of LinnCounty Sheriff.I am 50 years old and I have been a lifelong resident of Linn County, currently residing in CedarRapids. My wife, Sharon, a corporate accounting and benefits manager, and I have been marriedfor nearly 27 years and we have a 24-year-old daughter, Nicole, a PhD graduate student.I wish to continue to serve as the Linn County Sheriff and feel that I am the best candidate forthe position based on my experience, training, and education. I have been a dedicated employeeof the Linn County Sheriffs Office for over 32 years, as I near the completion of my first term asSheriff. Prior to being elected Sheriff in 2008, I served as a Second Deputy - Major, functioningas the Patrol Division Commander. I have worked in the Communications, Civil, GeneralServices, Jail, and Patrol Divisions of the Sheriffs Office. I have previously served as theAssistant Jail Administrator in our 400+ bed facility, the second largest jail in the state of Iowa.I am a 1999 graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy and a 2010 graduate of theNational Sheriffs' Institute. I am also a state certified Emergency Medical Technician. I have anAssociate's Degree in Law Enforcement, a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal JusticeAdministration, and a Master's Degree in Public Administration in Criminal Justice. If re-elected Sheriff, I vow to continue the professionalism of the Linn County Sheriff s Office. With a FY 13 budget nearly of $18 million, this agency needs to be treated as a business; thebusiness of law enforcement. In these times of ever-tightening budgets, we need to continue towork hard to ensure that the Sheriffs Office is providing the best service possible to the citizensof Linn County, while still ensuring that we remain fiscally responsible.Since being elected Sheriff, I have improved public service and officer safety by:

Promoting a county-wide communications system that will allow emergency responders(law enforcement, fire, and EMS) in all of Linn County to seamlessly communicate witheach other (expected project completion in late 2012).

Implementing a process for the sharing and exchanging of computerized dispatch, records, and jail information with other Linn County law enforcement agencies (expectedproject completion in mid-20 12). Enhancing the technology available to Sheriffs Office employees including theinstallation of mobile data computers in patrol vehicles and the use of automated vehicle

locators for the dispatch center to allow for visual mapping of patrol vehicle locations(expected project completion in mid-20 12). Providing employees with the tools and knowledge necessary to allow them to effectively

and efficiently perform their job duties, including patrol rifles, Tasers, working towardthe goal of placing an automated external defibrillator in every patrol vehicle, andincreasing the training opportunities available to employees.

Working with legislators to fight for legislation that increases public safety and againstlegislation that decreases or jeopardizes it.Under my leadership, the Linn County Jail and the Linn County Sheriffs Office were two of thefirst county owned buildings to be reoccupied after the 2008 flood. This allowed the Jail revenueto return to the County's general fund as soon as possible, thus lessening residents' post-floodtax burden. Last fiscal year, the Jail brought in over $3.5 million in revenue. When funding for the Sheriffs Office paramedic-specialist rescue program, Rescue 57, was cutby the Board of Supervisors in FY 12, I fought hard to get the funding restored so that LinnCounty residents would continue to be provided with the most advanced level of emergencymedical care possible. This funding was temporarily restored in our FY12 budget andpermanently restored in our FY13 budget.Linn County residents need a Sheriff who is knowledgeable of the operations of the departmentand cognizant of the public safety issues facing the Sheriff s Office and its employees. If reelected, I will continue to ensure the Sheriffs Office provides the best service possible to thecitizens of Linn County, while still ensuring that we remain fiscally responsible.
